Brewery news USA, MA: Boston Beer shares fall as company slashes earnings guidance
Boston Beer Co. shares fell in the extended session on January 13 after the beer maker slashed its earnings guidance in light of higher-than-expected supply-chain costs and reduced wholesaler inventories, the MarketWatch reported.

Boston Beer shares fell 7% after hours, following a 0.8% gain in the regular session to close at $488.98.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said it now expects full-year bottom line results of a loss of $1 a share to net income of $1 a share, down from a previous forecast of $2 to $6 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet had forecast earnings of $5.69 a share.

“The estimated lower shipment growth is primarily a result of more aggressive wholesaler inventory reduction than expected, primarily affecting Truly,” the company said in the filing. Truly is the company’s hard seltzer brand. “Additionally, due to higher than expected supply chain costs, which include costs for additional damaged and expired inventory resulting from the lower shipment volumes, we estimate gross margins to be lower than expected.”

Brewery news USA: Monster Beverage strikes deal to buy CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective LLC
Monster Beverage Corp. has been mulling a move into booze for years. It finally took the plunge on January 13, becoming the latest big soft-drink company to try its hand at alcoholic beverages, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Monster, best known for its namesake energy drinks, said it had forged a deal to buy craft-beer and hard-seltzer company CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective LLC for $330 million.

The deal comes as soda makers and alcohol companies move onto one another’s turf in bids to spur growth.

Constellation Brands Inc. last week said it struck a deal with Coca-Cola Co. to launch canned cocktails under the Fresca soda brand. Last year, Coke introduced an alcoholic version of its Topo Chico seltzer in a partnership with Molson Coors Beverage Co. PepsiCo Inc., meanwhile, is set to roll out an alcoholic version of Mountain Dew in a venture with Samuel Adams brewer Boston Beer Co. And Anheuser-Busch InBev SA this month is introducing a line of Bud Light-branded hard soda in cola, cherry-cola, orange and lemon-lime flavors.

In 2019, Rodney Sacks, now chairman and co-CEO of Corona, Calif.-based Monster, told shareholders that the company had its sights on hard seltzers, malt beverages and spirits.

Brewery news USA, KY: Noble Funk Brewing Co. ready to launch in Louisville on January 14
The former Old Louisville Kroger has completed its transformation into a 27,000-square foot brewery, the LEO Weekly reported on January 12.

Noble Funk Brewing Co. is opening on Friday, January 14 at 922 S. Second St., starting with three new beers and oven-fired pizzas.

“We’re ready to go,” said Dominique Shrader, who started working on the concept in 2019 with her husband, Johnathan Shrader. The Kroger closed in 2017.

Noble Funk is starting off slow. With 24 taps, the Shraders are beginning with just a few lighter drinking ales: a golden ale, a saison and an apricot wheat beer for $5 a pint. An IPA and stout are in the works.

Its hours will be limited, too. This Friday and Saturday (January 14-15), the brewery will be open from 4 to 10 p.m.

From then on, it will be open Wednesday through Sunday evenings.

In addition to beer, Noble Funk will also serve kombucha on tap, from the Sharders’ other business, Kentucky Kombucha. Wine and basic cocktails are on the menu, too.

Noble Funk’s pizzas will be 10-inch pies, thin crust, but not Neapolitan style levels of thin. They’ll have your classics, like cheese and pepperoni, as well as a range ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Aspire Brewing hopes to open in Middletown by the end of the summer
In the late 1990s, Sonny Patel owned a gas station business. After he began selling beer at the gas station’s store, another business owner in the area, who had owned a beer store that had been in the area since 1964, approached him, the Westfair Communications reported on January 12.

“He contacted me and said, ‘I’m buying your business or you’re going to buy my business.’ And we made a deal. I ended up buying his business, and that was my first beer store or beer beverage business, in 1999.”

Back then, Patel didn’t even drink beer. But he eventually warmed up to it. A group of friends who frequented the Monticello bar The Nugget to share beer with each other would come to Patel’s store with the empty cans or bottles afterward and ask Patel to get the unique varieties of beer for the shop.

“At that point, one of the customers that was a friend, he comes in one day and says ‘Sonny, have you ever tried this beer?’ Patel said. “And I said, ‘No, I don’t drink.’ He says, ‘I want to buy this beer for you. I want you to try it.’ I tried it. I loved it. I ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Flying Boat Brewing sells its production facility to Tampa’s King State Brewing
St. Petersburg’s Flying Boat Brewing announced on January 10 it is selling its production facility at 1776 11th Ave. N. to Tampa’s King State Brewing, the St. Pete Catalyst reported.

The facility will now be known as Brutalist Brewing. While King State owns the site, Flying Boat will continue brewing from the location as a contract brewer, and five of its beers will remain on tap.

Flying Boat said the move offers the company the opportunity to pursue multiple satellite locations across the Tampa Bay region.

Brewery news USA, MI: Elk Brewing Company permanently closing its Comstock Park location
A sad day has come for many beer enthusiasts in the Grand Rapids area with Elk Brewing Company permanently closing its Comstock Park location, MLive.com reported on January 11.

The brewery, located at 400 Dodge Street, is enjoying its last week of operation with Sunday, January 16 announced as its last day, according to Elk Brewing’s Facebook post.

The joint near the Fifth Third Ballpark opened in 2016. The 5,000 square-foot space with rustic garage doors held about 100 people inside and 120 on the outdoor patio.

“This was a very hard decision, and we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your support over the years,” the Facebook post said.

Elk Brewing did not respond to requests for information about the reason for closing its second location before publication.

Officials said on Facebook that it is extending Mug Club pricing to its loyal Mug Clubbers throughout this week, as well as $1 off all full pours to the general public, the Facebook post said. There is also a $1 off all Crowlers/Howlers and $2 off Growlers all week.

Although one location is closing, the Grand Rapids taproom at 700 Wealthy Street remains open and will continue normal operations.

Brewery news USA, TN: Cool Springs Brewery closes down for good
Cool Springs Brewery, a brew pub and restaurant at 600 Frazier Drive, Ste. 135, Franklin, closed on Jan. 11, according to a Jan. 11 announcement on social media.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we let you know tonight is our last night,” the Facebook announcement said. “We have had an amazing run for the last 12 years. We love and cherish all of our patrons, and we wish everyone a full and happy life. Y'all were the best, and we will never forget that. Live well and love much.”

The restaurant and pub featured the microbrewery's own craft beers, and a food menu included burgers, sandwiches and pizzas as well as various entrees such as fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, and bangers and mash.

In late April 2020, the business shut down temporarily, citing an as-of-then unreceived share of financial support from the U.S. Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, and not enough takeout business to sustain their staff's wages.

Attempts on Jan. 12 to reach owners Chris and Jane Hartland, who opened the brewery in 2008, were unsuccessful.

Barley news Australia: New year brings elimination of tariffs on Australian barley to Mexico
The new year has triggered new tariff arrangements which have potential to expand export market opportunities for Australian grain, the Grain Central reported on January 12.

The most promising of the trade developments that took effect from January 1, 2022, is the complete elimination of tariffs on Australian barley to Mexico.

Australian barley exports to Mexico attracted tariffs of 15 per cent until December 31, 2021.

Under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), that dropped to zero on January 1, 2022.

“Tariffs on barley to Mexico will be eliminated completely, further enhancing our competitiveness,” Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australian David Littleproud said in a January 1 media release announcing new tariff reductions and market access improvements that took effect the same day.

Mexico became Australia’s largest market for malting barley exports in 2021.

This was largely the result of severe punitive duties applied on Australia’s exports to China following the anti-dumping and countervailing duties investigations, which completely halted the trade in Australian barley to China.

These developments resulted in Australia’s first shipment of barley to Mexico in 2021, valued at more than A$69 million, “a fantastic achievement,” Mr Littleproud said.

The access in 2021 was also aided by the drought in Canada which ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Czech lager brand Budweiser Budvar achieves record sales in the UK in 2021
Czech lager brand Budweiser Budvar has revealed that it achieved record sales in the UK last year after a market-beating 38% volume increase, the KamCity reported on January 13.

Total volumes, across both the off-trade and on-trade, for Budweiser Budvar were 80,000 hl, the equivalent of 16 million 500ml bottles of Budvar.

Jitka Vlčková, Managing Director of Budweiser Budvar UK, said: “For an ever-increasing number of craft beer drinkers, Budweiser Budvar is the first choice when it comes to full-flavoured, authentically lagered Czech beer. Our increased UK distribution means we’re reaching more consumers than ever.”

The record performance followed a 2020 brand refresh for Budvar, which put the focus on the state-owned Czech lager’s quality and heritage, as well as proclaiming its status as the flagship of ‘the Republic of Beer’.

The brand was a strong performer in the UK off-trade, with IRI data showing Budweiser Budvar was the third-fastest growing World Lager in supermarkets, and the number one stocked Czech beer brand in the convenience channel. On-trade sales also made a strong recovery once venues reopened in April 2021.

Rich Sanna, Multiple Grocer Channel Controller for Budweiser Budvar UK, commented: “We were well-positioned to meet the increase in off-trade demand in 2020 when the ...More info on site

Whisky news UK & India: UK and India negotiate removal of 150% whisky export tariff
The UK and Indian governments have launched negotiations for a free trade agreement at an event in New Delhi, with the removal of the 150% whisky export tariff being a key priority, the Scottish Business Insider reported on January 12.

International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan will meet with her counterpart, Indian minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, to formally start talks.

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and a trade deal has the potential to almost double UK exports to India, boosting the total trade by as much as £28 bln a year by 2035, while increase wages across the UK by up to £3 bln.

Investment from Indian companies already supports 95,000 jobs across the UK.

UK Government Minister for Scotland Malcolm Offord hinted late last year in a parliamentary committee meeting that a future trade deal with India would “transform the whisky industry”.

The first round of negotiations is expected to start next week.

During her visit to India, Trevelyan will also co-chair a meeting of the UK-India Joint Economic and Trade Committee to review how businesses in both countries are benefiting from existing market access commitments under the UK-India Enhanced Trade Partnership agreed last May by the Prime Minister Boris ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Malting barley exports down 26% in November
Australia exported 61,308 tonnes of malting barley, 598,205 tonnes of feed barley and 119,944 tonnes of sorghum in November, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The malting figure is down 26 per cent from the October total to reflect the normal rundown in old-crop availability, while the feed total is up 71pc for the month.

The sorghum total is down 60pc from October to reflect dwindling supplies from the 2021 harvest.

Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said November was a huge counter-seasonal month for total barley exports, with the largest numbers seen since May 2021.

“Malt barley continues to show consistency, with strong relative exports and South American destinations leading the way.

“Feed barley showed the larger Saudi numbers we have been waiting for, with their largest month since March, along with good demand to other Middle Eastern homes.”

“The biggest surprise came from The Philippines, which had its largest month of imports ever, and more than doubled its previous record.”

In November shipments, Mexico on 33,000 tonnes and Peru on 19,436 tonnes were the biggest markets by far, while on feed, Saudi Arabia was the destination for 317,955 tonnes, followed by The Philippines on 149,273 tonnes and Vietnam ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Spring malting barley Diablo showing good performance on-farm and through malting process
The spring malting barley variety Diablo could become the number one variety in Scotland in the next two to three years after an initial good performance on-farm and through the malting process, the Farmers’ Weekly reported on January 13 citing a leading UK maltster.

Eddie Douglas, commercial director at Bairds Malt, is impressed with the yield and quality of the variety, bred by Limagrain, after some initial doubts over its slightly later maturity when grown in Scotland. He says that he had seen good crops from the Borders up the Moray Firth coast.

He was initially wary of its slightly late maturity, but although it is something to watch he believes it should not be an issue, and the variety now makes up 50% of the volume at one of the maltster’s intake points in Aberdeenshire, and this spring will be in trials even further north on the Black Isle.

“I could see it being the number one variety in Scotland within the next two to three years, if performance is similar to the past three seasons,” he says.

The Scottish spring malting barley market is dominated by the variety Laureate, with Sassy in second place and Diablo third, while Bairds operates three ...More info on site
