Canada & France: France’s Rouen port set to ship its first-ever barley cargo for Canada
|
Canada, one of the world’s top barley exporters, is importing a rare cargo from Europe after drought decimated its harvest last year, Bloomberg reported on January 18.
France’s Rouen port is set to load its first-ever barley cargo for Canada, on the bulk carrier Federal Spey, according to a spokesman for the port operator. The North American nation hasn’t imported significant volumes from the European Union since the 2015-16 season, trade data show.
Canada is typically largely self-sufficient in barley and ranked as the fifth-biggest exporter in the 2020-21 season, U.S. Department of Agriculture data show. But its output shrank by a third last year to the smallest since the 1960s as heat and dryness plagued its prairies. The drought has also shifted trade flows for other grains such as corn.
For barley, the poor harvest has added to a global supply crunch for the grain used in brewing and animal feed, with stockpiles set to reach an almost four-decade low, according to the USDA. Beer makers have also faced rising aluminum costs and labor and transport bottlenecks, spurring price hikes for the beverage.

USA, OH: Warped Wing Brewing Co. planning grand opening of its second location on February 4
|
A Dayton-based brewery is planning to open its first Mason location next month, Cincinnati.com reported on January 18.
Warped Wing Brewing Co. is planning a grand opening for the brewery and taproom Feb. 4 in the location formerly occupied by Basil's On Market.
Once open, the 13,000-square-foot brewpub and smokery will feature a taproom, small pilot brewing system, full-service dining experience, flexible event space and an outdoor biergarten coming this spring, according to a news release.
To celebrate the grand opening, Warped Wing is working with Sonder Brewing in Mason to offer a collaboration beer on tap, Ryesing Tides.
The food menu will have a large focus on smoked meat, and many menu items will feature Warped Wing beers as ingredients.
Beyond beer, Warped Wing will offer hard cider and a spirits men with a focus on specialty cocktails. It will also offer non-alcoholic mocktails and house-made sodas, including root beer.

USA, NJ: Tonewood Brewing set to open its doors on January 22
|
The long awaited second location of the beloved Tonewood Brewing is set to open in Barrington, NJ this Saturday, January 22nd. They will be open from Noon to 10pm, 42 Freeway reported on January 17.
This was made official by the brewery themselves on January 17, when they released the news with a short drone style tour of the facility.
The original Oaklyn NJ brewery will continue to be open and will likely focus on specialty beers.
Tonewood has a license in Barrington to support the production of 50,000 barrels a year which is eight times the volume of their original Oaklyn location.

USA, NC: Rick's Restaurant and Bar owner decides to open a brewery in Sneads Ferry

Rick's Restaurant and Bar opened almost 19 years ago by owner Rick Bumgardner, and now he and his daughter, Rebekah Pearson, have decided to open a brewery behind the restaurant in Sneads Ferry, JDNews.com reported on January 17.
Pearson has been the bar manager of Rick's for about seven years and is excited to take this next step with her dad.
"We're big beer drinkers in the family," said Pearson. "We have land back here behind Rick's, so naturally, that was the next step for us. We always knew we wanted to put something behind the restaurant, we just didn't know what it would be."
Pearson said her brother mentioned a brewery about 10 years ago, but it was just before the time. She then mentioned the idea to her dad and grandfather a couple of years ago, and they decided to take the plunge.
Topsail Brewing Company will be Onslow's first, with the closest being Salty Turtle in Surf City.

USA, VA: Brewery and winery with a historical twist, Southern Revere Cellars opens in Richmond region
|
A new brewery and winery with a historical twist has opened on the outskirts of the Richmond region, the Richmond BizSense reported on January 18.
Southern Revere Cellars opened last month at 1100 E. Jack Jouett Road in Louisa County.
It’s a family business, owned by married couples Dave and Paula Spencer and Jason and Sheridan Grime. Paula Spencer and Jason Grime are brother and sister.
Located on 70 acres about 45 miles west of downtown Richmond, Southern Revere offers both beer and wine — most of which will eventually be made with grapes and hops that are currently growing on the land.
The quartet bought the land in 2018 and got to work planting crops and building Southern Revere’s roughly 2,800-square-foot barn-style taproom and production facility.
To launch Southern Revere, the Spencers left white-collar jobs in downtown Richmond. Dave said he was a brokerage operations manager for SunTrust, while Paula said she worked in health care administration and IT.
“It was definitely a stressful environment I was in, but you get into the swing of things being there for 20-plus years,” Spencer said. “It was something I wanted to be able to get out of.”

USA, VA: Craft brewery with a canine twist may be coming to Virginia Beach by early summer
|
Pups and Pints, the proposed craft brewery with a canine twist, may be coming to the southside of London Bridge Road near General Booth Boulevard in Virginia Beach, the Yahoo News reported on January 15.
Owners Alexandria Lawson, Christina Sims, and Andrea Paphites have applied for a permit to operate a small craft brewery in the former Strawbridge Garden Center building. It would be renovated and include a restaurant and a dog kennel.
The doggie day care component would require a membership with no overnight boarding of animals. Dogs would be allowed at the brewery, Lawson said.
They hope to open by early summer.
“We’re really excited to bring this to the community,” said Lawson, a business analyst who was inspired to start Pups and Pints after enjoying wine with friends while their canines played at dog parks.
The planning commission unanimously recommended approval of the craft brewery Wednesday despite the concerns of several nearby residents. The City Council will vote on it soon.
“It poses a negative impact on the safety, aesthetics, suburban character and economic value of our stable neighborhood,” resident Lisa Erwin said.

USA, TX: Project Halo Brewing opening this summer in Fulshear
|
Steve and Melissa Mendez’s passion for their city is matched only by their passion for brewing beer. Now the couple have brought the two together in the form of Project Halo Brewing, a new brewery opening this summer in Fulshear, the Houston Chronicle reported on January 19.
The couple effuse almost as much pride over the Fulshear-Katy area as they do for the craft beers they’ll soon be offering.
Project Halo, located at 6520 F.M. 359 South, will offer lagers, pilsners, IPAs and a rotating tap of “experimental type” brews like Vietnamese coffees, sour Berliners or darker ales, Steve said.
The idea for Project Halo began when Steve was serving as a Special Forces Green Beret. His travels took him around the world, but the couple spent considerable time in the northwest.
“Craft beer has always kind of been a passion for us,” Steve said. “When I was in the military, that kind of took me around to several places, but one place where we spent a large majority of our time was in Washington State, and the craft beer scene was pretty mature there at the time.”

USA, NY: Ballston Spa family hopes to open brewery, wood-fired pizza shop soon
|
A Ballston Spa family said it was tired of looking at the rundown, two-story 6,000-square-foot building at 11-13 Washington St. Once a dress factory, it had been vacant for about 30 years.
Randy Elliott, his wife Kelly Delaney-Elliott and their son R.J. Elliott, 22, bought the building in May 2020 for $180,000.The project in mind: a farm brewery and wood-fired pizza business on the second floor. R.J. was given the task of shepherding it along, The Daily Gazette reported on January 15.
“We bought it because we’ve lived in the village forever and it was a vacant building and we wanted to revitalize it,” R.J. said. “We wanted to bring it back to life and start bringing businesses to Washington Street, and clean up the area.”
Recently, the proposal went before the village Planning Board.
“We expect, by the next meeting, we should have the building permit,” R.J. said, “and be full steam ahead.”
On the first floor about 1,500 square feet will be retail space, while the brewery’s taproom will occupy about 2,000 square feet. An additional 800 square feet will be flexible space, and the remaining space will be used for storage.

South Korea: Non-alcoholic beer market growing at blistering pace since outbreak of Covid

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, South Korea’s non-alcoholic beer market has been growing at a blistering pace thanks to an increase in the number of health-conscious consumers and the growth of the drinking-at-home culture, the Korea BizWire reported on January 18.
Hite Jinro Co., the country’s second-largest beverage company, had been selling between 6 and 7 million cans of its non-alcoholic beer ‘Hite Zero 0.00’ since it was released in 2012.
Annual sales, however, surpassed the 10 million can mark in 2020 and more than doubled last year.
The size of the nation’s non-alcoholic beer market stood at about 20 billion won (US$16.8 million), equivalent to less than 1 percent of the size of the nation’s overall beer market.
Nonetheless, non-alcoholic beer has a strong growth rate.
Sales of non-alcoholic beer at major convenience store chains such as GS25, CU and 7-Eleven grew by 814 percent, 460 percent and 501 percent, respectively, last year compared to a year before.
According to the Korea Customs Service, the nation’s imports of non-alcoholic beers amounted to US$7.58 million last year, a more than twofold increase from $2.93 million a year ago and a more than fivefold jump compared to the 2019 figure.

Lithuania & Taiwan: Lithuania’s oldest beer brewer exploring the Taiwanese market
|
Lithuania’s oldest beer brewer is exploring the Taiwanese market in the wake of a naming row over a newly opened Taiwanese representative office in Vilnius that led to a ban on products from the Baltic state in China, The Taipei Times reported on January 18.
During an interview earlier this month, Volfas Engelman chief executive officer Marius Horbacauskas said that his company had entered the Taiwan market in the middle of 2020, and while sales were poor for the first year, with only 8,000 litres sold, there was a boom last year, with beer exports to Taiwan increasing 23-fold.
Horbacauskas said he is thrilled that Taiwanese like his company’s products.
“For us, it is a very big motivation,” he said.
The skyrocketing sales might have something to do with a campaign launched by Taipei to support Lithuanian products, which have been boycotted in China.
Ties between Vilnius and Beijing soured after Lithuania in November last year allowed Taiwan to open an overseas representative office that included the word “Taiwanese” in its name.
Beijing has sought to impose a political cost on Lithuania for allowing the office to use the name.

South Africa: South African Breweries announce appointment of new CEO
|
The South African Breweries (SAB) has announced the appointment of Richard Rivett-Carnac as its new CEO. Rivett-Carnac says he is committed to working with Government, suppliers and all stakeholders to responsibly grow the beer category and SAB’s share of the category, IOL reported on January 19.
The new chief executive holds a Bachelor of Business Science degree from the University of Cape Town. He is also a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. He has 13 years of experience in various roles within the AB InBev group.
He joined SABMiller in the London office as part of the mergers and acquisitions team in 2009, and more recently was the VP for Finance, Legal & Corporate Affairs for AB InBev’s Africa Zone, successfully navigating the business through what could be considered the most challenging years since its inception.

Beer fans are seeking low and no alcohol beers made in the UK along with more flexible subscription services, according to craft beer retailer HonestBrew.
Speaking to The Drinks Business, HonestBrew CEO Michael Alcock said: “In January of the last few years, we’ve seen the popularity of our Low & No range grow. From a 10 times increase between 2019 and 2020 to close to double the amount of sales from this category in the January of 2021, it’s fair to say that more and more customers have been seeking out these beers each Dry January.”
Alcock revealed that “the advancements in brewing low and no alcohol beers means that a broad range of flavours can be created, just as with full-strength beers. Craft brewers have mastered a range of techniques, from perfecting water chemistry, to using grains that provide more body — like oats — and focusing on aroma hops at cold temperatures so that the hops don’t impart any unwanted bitterness. This means they can accurately recreate the flavours of full-strength beers.”
