USA, IA: Field Day Brewing Co. gets site plan approval by North Liberty City Council

A new restaurant and brewery is coming to a growing commercial area in North Liberty as early as spring 2023, The Gazette reported.
The North Liberty City Council at its evening meeting on Tuesday, January 25 unanimously approved a site plan for Field Day Brewing Co., the newest endeavor for restaurant owner Brian Flynn.
Flynn owns various restaurants in the Corridor, including 30hop, Joe's Place and Tin Roost.
Flynn told The Gazette he and his business partners were inspired to open a brewery after discussions about the bar and restaurant business.
“The prospect of creating a brand, brewing our own beer and already having the capabilities to sell the products in our bars and restaurants seemed to just make sense,” Flynn said.
The 20,910-square-foot restaurant and brewery will be on 3.9 acres of land at 925 and 945 Liberty Way, west of Liberty Centre Pond and near Tin Roost.
There also will be an outdoor patio area part of the restaurant near the pond.
Flynn said the hope is to create a community gathering place for North Liberty residents and surrounding communities.
“As North Liberty continues to grow, so does the demand and need for entertainment venues, restaurants, bars and gathering places,” Flynn said.

USA, PA: Pittsburgh Brewing Co.’s new site in East Deer expected to be brewing by summer
|
Citing steady progress at its new site in East Deer, Pittsburgh Brewing Co. general manager Todd Zwicker said on January 26 he expects brewing to be underway by the summer, NEXTpittsburgh reported.
The makers of Iron City Beer started work at the former Pittsburgh Glass Works last year. A tour of the facility on January 26 showed the brewhouse area is nearing completion as more equipment is set to arrive.
A total of 25 large brewing tanks will occupy the open main space.
The company’s original 1861 logo stretches across the floor with yellow lines representing the region’s three rivers on it. One of the river lines — the Allegheny River — leads to the circular logo of that reads Pittsburgh Brewing Co., Creighton Facility, Allegheny County, 2022.
“It is very far along in its development,” Zwicker said.
The building maintains the same structure as the Pittsburgh Glass Works, which closed in 2018. Cliff Forrest, owner of the Kittanning-based Rosebud Mining Co. who took over Pittsburgh Brewing Co. in 2018, bought the shuttered former windshield plant in 2019.
Zwicker would not disclose the amount of money being put into renovations but said it was a substantial investment.

USA, FL: Four families working on opening Amicus Brewing Ventures in downtown Tallahassee
|
Four families want to transform old graffiti-tagged waterworks into a neighborhood craft brewery in downtown Tallahassee, the Tallahassee Democrat reported on January 27.
It's an L-shaped eyesore now, a far cry from being the city's first water system in the 17th century when Tallahassee relied on wells and cisterns. Located at Gaines and Gadsden streets, the site hasn't pumped water since 1958.
The 1-acre patch with five buildings had been deserted for two decades until the city sold it to North American Properties in 2018. NAP, the Cincinnati-based developer that built the AC by Marriott Hotel and Millstream at Cascades Apartments, used the site for parking and storage to finish the nearby redevelopment at Cascades.
Yet, the site and its unique buildings were meant to be more than storage and parking. Soon, NAP is slated to sell it so it can once again serve Tallahassee.
This time, it may make history along the way as Amicus Brewing Ventures — an all female-owned brewing company — takes over and pours something new into something old. (Craft beer fans will also note the company's initials are "ABV," which also stands for alcohol by volume, used to measure the alcohol content of beer.)

USA, MT: Farm Power Malt planning to build a distillery
|
Farm Power Malt, owned and operated by the Pfeifle family, is planning to expand. While the community Power may seem like just a small town northwest of Great Falls, the family has been exploring the limits of flavor in craft beer and spirits by growing unique grains and turning them into unique malts, and they are now planning to build a distillery, KRTV reported on January 25.
The Pfeifle family has farmed in Power since 1915. For generations, the Pfeifle family has raised barley for industrial breweries, but for barley to be converted into malt, the Pfeifle family hand-built their own unique malting machine to create higher quality malt.
Ryan Pfeifle explained, "Drums in my opinion are the best way to make a very uniform product you can roll it and keep it mixed well. But because of the industry, because the need for scale, the large malt houses and stuff don't use drums anymore. On our scale, we can use a drum and a drum gives us the ability to experiment on smaller scales and make a very uniform high-quality product, and we can experiment on without worrying about wasting a lot of products."

USA, VA: Rockfish Brewing expanding in Charlottesville

Rockfish Brewing is expanding in Charlottesville, WVIR reported on January 26.
In addition to its location on Preston Avenue, the nanobrewery says it will be opening a second spot on the Downtown Mall.
“It will be a couple of firsts for the Downtown mall. There’s not a brewery down there, so that will be cool, and there’s no place where you can bring in outside food which is kind of a brewery thing,” owner Peter McIndes said.
The brewery plans to open this new spot no later than April 1.

USA, NH: Founders of Stoneface Brewing Company seeking approval to construct a new brewing facility

It’s a story they love to share: Beer enthusiasts Peter Beauregard and Erol Moe met and became fast friends as co-workers at a Portsmouth technology company more than two decades ago, Seacoastonline.com reported on January 27.
The two spent time outside of work homebrewing together, experimenting with their own concoctions, offering the beverages to close friends to rave reviews. They later won first prize at the Boston Homebrew Competition in 2013 for their India pale ale recipe.
That IPA became the signature beverage of the duo’s Stoneface Brewing Company, which they founded in late 2013 and began commercial brewing out of in the beginning of 2014, producing around 800 barrels of beer a year and incrementally expanding ever since to about 11,000 or 12,000 barrels today.
Now, Beauregard and Moe are looking ahead to a possible new chapter: a new Stoneface facility that could double their brewhouse capabilities.
The co-founders of Stoneface Brewing Company are seeking Newington's approval to construct a 23,400-square-foot brewing facility that would eventually become the popular brewery’s permanent home. It would feature a restaurant, too.

USA: AB InBev’s zero carbohydrate Bud Light NEXT to hit shelves February 7

Anheuser-Busch is rolling out its first-ever beer that contains zero carbohydrates as it looks to cater to a new, more body-conscious generation of beer drinkers, The New York Post reported on January 27.
Bud Light NEXT, slated to hit shelves Feb. 7, is aimed at Gen Zers who are looking for a drink that’s light and carb-free like hard seltzer but which also has the flavor of beer, the company said.
The new beer, first announced last summer, will get a push from an in-game Super Bowl commercial that will “demonstrate what’s possible when there’s zero in the way,” the company says.
Bud Light NEXT has 80 calories per 12-ounce serving and 4% alcohol — 30 fewer calories than Bud Light and 0.2% less alcohol by volume. But the biggest difference is in the carbs — Bud Light has 6.6 grams per serving, while Bud Light Next has none.
By comparison, a 12-ounce serving of Budweiser contains 145 calories and 11 grams of carbohydrates. Its alcohol-by-volume is 5%.

USA, OH: Akronym Brewing Co. to open pilot brewery in Medina by May or June

Akronym Brewing Co. has taken over the closed Rockne’s Pub in Medina, Cleveland.com reported on January 28.
Rockne’s, at 5121 Buehlers Dr. in Montville Township, off Ohio 18, closed in May 2019. The brewery is leasing the building, which is near a Buehler’s grocery store.
It’s going to be Akronym Public House and Pilot Brewery, said the brewery’s Shawn Adams. The Medina space will take advantage of Rockne’s large kitchen and become more of a gastropub.
“It’s always a lot of work right now, but we’re excited about it,” he said.
Joshua Blubaugh, one of the owners, said opening would be May or June in all likelihood, depending on supply-chain issues.
“This has been in the planning. The first location was three years in looking for a location. We pretty much started looking for a (second) location a year and half in. It’s been slow. With Covid, the opportunity got hard for a while. Coming out of Covid, things got a little bit easier,” said Blubaugh, who said the Rockne’s space covers 6,900 square feet inside plus about 1,000 on the patio.

USA, WA: Peddler Brewing to close down this spring

Peddler Brewing (1514 NW Leary Way, Seattle) will be closing this spring after nine years of selling beer in Ballard, My Ballard reported on January 26.
The owners, Dave and Haley Keller, announced on their website that they’ve decided to leave Seattle and move to Arizona. “Between living through this pandemic and having kids, our perspectives and priorities have changed and we’re ready for a little less stress in our lives and to focus our energy in a different direction,” they wrote.
Peddler opened in March 2013, back when the Ballard Brewery District was just taking shape. They wanted to start a business that would combine their love of beer and biking under one roof. In July 2014, Dave’s brother Mike joined their team, and they’ve been a staple brewery in the neighborhood ever since, hosting regular community events such as movie nights, comedy shows, dog parties, and cornhole competitions.
Dave and Haley celebrated some big events at Peddler over the years, from their wedding reception to baby showers and proposals for friends. They say their sons grew up in the brewery, from napping in playpens to now riding the forklift and riding their bikes around the beer garden.

USA, CT: Cottrell Brewing Company to close its doors for good

Charlie Buffum, owner and founder of the Cottrell Brewing Company, still remembers the day he produced his first keg of beer, The Westerly Sun reported on January 26.
A proud young brewer who was new to the game, Buffum and a staff member took the keg down the street from the Harris Graphics/Pawcatuck Business Park building on Mechanic Street to the nearby C.C. O’Brien’s Sports Café, the first of what would become countless deliveries to the local restaurant and pub.
That first keg was literally hand-delivered, with Buffum rolling the keg down the street, a far cry from the standard truck deliveries to the restaurant and many other locations today.
In the coming weeks, the Cottrell Brewing Co. will close its doors for good, bringing operations at the Mechanic Street brewery to an end after 25 years. It isn’t exactly riding off into the sunset, but Buffum said Wednesday he has no regrets and has enjoyed every moment.
“I had the opportunity to make something that people liked, something for the community,” Buffum said. “Second to that, I’ve enjoyed working with all my different employees and customers over the years. I’ve met a lot of good people over the past 25 years.”

UK: Another carbon dioxide shortage could see a hike in price of beer and fizzy drinks
|
Pub and restaurant bosses fear another carbon dioxide shortage could see a hike in the price of beer and fizzy drinks and are calling on the Government to find a long-term solution, iNews reported on January 27.
A supply chain crisis was averted in October last year when the Government stepped in to broker a deal between CO2 producers and the industry, but the agreement is due to expire at the end of January.
The deal was made between business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng and CF Industries, a US-based manufacturer of fertilizers with plants in the UK.
CF Industries makes 60 per cent of the UK’s commercial carbon dioxide as a by-product of producing ammonia for fertiliser. Its main plant is in Billingham, Teesside, and can produce 750 tonnes of CO2 per day.
At the time, CF Industries CEO Tony Will said: “We want to thank Mr Kwarteng and his entire staff for working tirelessly to bring about this agreement enabling restart of the plant and averting a potential CO2 supply disruption impacting many industries, including food and beverage availability to UK consumers.”
