Brewery news USA, NE: Five-0-Five Brewing Company becomes Fremont’s first brewery
After years of preparation and a move of location, Fremont's first brewery is open, the Lincoln Journal Star reported on January 28.

"It was overwhelmingly positive," co-owner Shawn Morrow said. "We've just kind of been embraced by everybody that's been waiting for this."

Five-0-Five Brewing Company at 349 N. Main St. serves beer and other drinks in downtown Fremont.

The brewery, owned and operated by Morrow and Tim Gesell, changed its original plan to open at the 505 Building, but kept the name within its title.

"Now, we're the 505 at 349," Morrow said. "That will probably be a T-shirt someday."

Morrow's journey to opening the brewery spans decades, beginning when he was hired by Empyrean Brewing Company in 1998.

"I worked my way up to being a brewer and then decided that this was something I wanted to do," he said.

Morrow began home brewing at the time, studying the trade by attending the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago and an extension of the University of California, Davis, in Madison, Wisconsin.

"It was always the dream to open up my own brewery," Morrow said. "I tried in 2008, and the market crashed and we lost all of our financing, so I was like, 'Let's regroup, figure ...More info on site

At the meeting, applicants Chelsey and Michael Ziolkowski were present and explained the details of the proposed project.

“We currently own a microbrewery in Bradley Beach. We have been open for about three-and-a-half years,” Michael said. “It has always been a passion of ours to open up a more farm-like, outdoor-like brewery outside of what we currently have in Bradley Beach. Our intent is to continue to run the brewery in Bradley Beach, and this becomes our second project and includes some additional things ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & France: Colorado’s Outer Range Brewing opening a brewery in France
Outer Range Brewing (ORB), Colorado’s award-winning craft brewery and apres hub, announced January 29 that they are taking their quality craft beer and mountain lifestyle concept to the heart of the French Alps, with a second location in the picturesque, quaint town of Sallanches, France, Brewbound reported.

Set to open in winter 2022, the Sallanches brewery will include a Nashville Hot Chicken restaurant, coffee roaster, a private event space for large parties or weddings, and a climbing wall with floor-to-ceiling views of Mont Blanc.

“When thinking about our next location, we knew we had to find a location as aspirational and awe-inspiring as our original location in Frisco,” explained ORB Co-Founder, Lee Cleghorn. “Our motto is ‘leave the life below,’ so we had to stay true to our values and go big with our next move. So why not go to the place where apres was invented?”

Over the last several years, Co-Founders Lee and Emily Cleghorn travelled to Europe on several occasions to partner with breweries through tap takeovers and collabs, experiences that allowed them to develop close friendships with the European beer community and continued to fuel their vision of expanding internationally. Like their Summit County homebase, Sallanches is surrounded ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Construction of Lake Superior Brewing Co. continues to progress
Construction of Lake Superior Brewing Co., under new ownership in the Lakeside-Lester Park neighborhood, continues to progress, a year and a half after owners Seth and Sarah Maxim purchased the company and its new space at 5324 E. Superior St., the Duluth News Tribune reported on January 28.

While they aren’t quite ready to open the brew pub, they have started accepting guests at their “brewtel” rental properties attached to and adjacent to the brewery.

The brewtel’s apartments, one studio and one two-bedroom, take up about 2,000 of the building’s 7,000 square feet. The space was the residence of the building’s previous owner when it was Xcel Xercise and Sun City Tanning. Sarah Maxim said the renovation to the apartments was a complete gut job, as was the interior of the brewery side of the building.

“We have a new roof, new windows — we have everything,” Sarah Maxim said of the building. “With that said, it’s been my husband and I pretty much doing this. We don’t have investors and it’s a labor-of-love project. It’s probably a $3 million project that we’re trying to do for about half.”

While Lake Superior Brewing is still at least four months away from a potential opening ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Diageo to open a Guinness brewery in London’s Covent Garden in autumn 2023
‘Guinness at Old Brewer’s Yard’ is set to open in London’s Covent Garden in autumn 2023, located on a historic brewing site. The development will create 150 jobs and be a destination for all to enjoy, Diageo announced on January 31.

Old Brewer's Yard first brewed beer back in 1722. 300 years later, Guinness is bringing the site back to life.

The investment to create ‘Guinness at Old Brewer’s Yard’ builds on the success of the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin and the opening of Johnnie Walker Princes Street in Edinburgh in 2021. It demonstrates the company’s confidence in London and the UK as a go-to destination for tourists and its commitment to the hospitality sector, which employs almost 2 million people in the UK. Guinness sales in Great Britain have grown by over 30% in the last six months and 1 in every 10 pints sold in London is now a Guinness.

The new 50,000 sq ft venue will create up to 150 jobs for the Capital and provide a community space within the Covent Garden area. The site will also become the Southern UK hub of our award-winning Learning for Life Bartending and Hospitality Programme, with an ambition for over 100 London ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Pilsner Urquell Brewery ends production of beer in plastic bottles
In line with recent efforts to become more eco-friendly, Czech beer giant Pilsner Urquell Brewery has announced that they have officially ended the production of beer in plastic PET bottles. The last plastic bottles produced by the company were filled in December, and are now being sold in stores, Expats.cz reported on January 30.

While the company's flagship beer Pilsner Urquell, one of the most famous brands in the Czech Republic, was not sold in plastic bottles, many of the company's other beers were. These included Gambrinus, Kozel, and other popular brands.

Pilsner Urquell Brewery began production of beer in plastic bottles in 2011, and had an initial capacity of around 18,000 bottles per hour. By 2015, around seven percent of the brewery's output was produced in plastic bottles.

In recent years, the company shifted away from plastic bottles, and that share fell to around 3-4 percent. By 2020, Pilsner Urquell stopped production of Gambrinus, Radegast, and Klasik in plastic bottles.

The final two brands to be produced in plastic bottles, Kozel and Primus, will no longer be bottled in plastic as of 2022.

"The last [plastic] bottle filled was a Primus on December 10, which finished the operation of the line," Pilsner Urquell spokesperson ...More info on site
