USA: Premixed cocktails steal share from beer and hard seltzer
|
Premixed cocktails were the fastest-growing spirits category in 2021, stealing share from beer and hard seltzer, CNBC reported on February 3.
Sales of premixed cocktails surged 42.3% to $1.6 billion compared with a year earlier, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. Ready-to-drink cocktails were second only to vodka in terms of volume consumption, beating American whiskey, tequila and mezcal and rum.
“We do think that it’s coming from beer and hard seltzer, though consumers, as they’re going out more, are also liking the convenience of spirits-based RTDs,” DISCUS Chief of Public Policy Christine LoCascio said at the trade group’s annual economic briefing on Thursday.
“I think it’s a combination of things, but with the off-premise sales remaining steady as well, I think people are still buying products to make cocktails at home,” she added.
Beer consumption has been on a downward spiral for years as consumers opt to drink less alcohol or choose to drink cocktails or hard seltzer instead. And after several years of skyrocketing sales for hard seltzer, the category is seeing the pace of growth stabilize.

UK: Beer and meat producers cautiously welcome CO2 deal
|
Food and drink makers have cautiously welcomed a deal that will secure UK production of carbon dioxide, which is used in making meat, beer, baked goods and fizzy drinks, for at least three months, The Guardian reported on February 1.
Meat processors, brewers, bakers and soft drink producers all use CO2 in making and packaging their goods. It is also required for the humane slaughter of animals including pigs and chickens, and is used by hospitals and nuclear power plants.
A short government statement said the new industry-led deal would enable CF Fertiliser plant in Billingham, County Durham, to continue to operate.
The plant was scheduled for potential shutdown this week after a three-month emergency deal brokered by the government came to an end on Monday.
That deal was prompted by a crisis in CO2 supplies in late September as high energy prices combined with annual maintenance shutdowns to bring UK production to a near halt.
The government was forced to use taxpayer money to fund a three-week bailout for CF Industries, which accounts for 60% of the UK’s CO2 supplies, to stave off supply chain chaos before the first three-month deal was agreed. It said it would not put up further funds.

Australia: Pubs, clubs and brewers call for beer tax relief

The Australian Hotels Association (AHA), Clubs Australia (CA) and the Brewers Association (BA) are calling on the Federal Government to deliver draught beer tax relief, The Shout reported on January 31.
The associations say a 50 per cent draught beer tax reduction would lower tax bills by A$500 for an average pub, and more importantly would be a huge help to venues that have done the right thing by closing their doors when they have been asked to.
“Twice a year for 35 years pubs and drinkers have copped a tax hike on draught beer,” Queensland Hotels Association Chief Executive Bernie Hogan said.
“This year – after our members have done the right thing throughout the pandemic and at a time when jobs and businesses hang in the balance – we ask that pubs and drinkers get a break.
“Every beer poured in a glass through pubs and clubs creates local jobs, brings people together and enlivens communities.
“A tax cut of 50 per cent to the current excise rate would reduce the price of a schooner by about 35 cents turning the tap on some much-needed relief for beer drinkers and pubs.”

South Africa: Malting barley production falls short of AB InBev’s mandate
|
South Africa’s malting barley production fell 95 000 tonnes short of Anheuser-Busch InBev’s (AB InBev) 360 000 tonne-mandate during the past season, due to farmers rather planting crops with lower risk, such as canola and wheat, the Farmer’s Weekly reported on February 1.
“Barley production is at an all-time low. We need a turn-around strategy to make it attractive to farmers again,” José de Kock, chairperson of Grain SA’s Barley Industry Committee, said during the organisation’s recent regional annual general meeting in Rietpoel, Western Cape.
He said drought conditions negatively affected yields in the Swartland and Southern Cape regions between 2017 and 2019, while COVID-19-related bans on the sale of liquor that started in 2020, resulted in a surplus that was 49% higher than the previous year.
AB InBev lowered its intake in response, from 475 000 tonnes to 365 000 tonnes, which farmers struggled to reach because of various challenges.
De Kock explained that Swartland farmers only produced 6 000 tonnes of their 22 000 tonne-mandate, because of a stand-off between AB InBev and silo companies over the storage of barley.
Farmers who took the risk of planting barley ended up having to transport their crops from the Swartland to the Southern Cape region.

Ukraine: Barley exports in 2021/22 total 5.5 mln tonnes
|
Ukraine has exported 38.6 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2021/22 July-June season, up 31.6% from the same stage a season earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on February 2.
The total included 17 million tonnes of wheat, 5.5 million tonnes of barley and 15.6 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.
Agriculture Minister Roman Leshchenko has said the country harvested a record 84 million tonnes of grain in clean weight in 2021, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020.
The ministry has said the 2021/22 exports could include 24.5 million tonnes of wheat, 30.9 million of corn and 5.2 million of barley.
Ukraine's exports last season included 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million of wheat and 4.2 million of barley.
