Brewery news USA: Premixed cocktails steal share from beer and hard seltzer
Premixed cocktails were the fastest-growing spirits category in 2021, stealing share from beer and hard seltzer, CNBC reported on February 3.

Sales of premixed cocktails surged 42.3% to $1.6 billion compared with a year earlier, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. Ready-to-drink cocktails were second only to vodka in terms of volume consumption, beating American whiskey, tequila and mezcal and rum.

“We do think that it’s coming from beer and hard seltzer, though consumers, as they’re going out more, are also liking the convenience of spirits-based RTDs,” DISCUS Chief of Public Policy Christine LoCascio said at the trade group’s annual economic briefing on Thursday.

“I think it’s a combination of things, but with the off-premise sales remaining steady as well, I think people are still buying products to make cocktails at home,” she added.

Beer consumption has been on a downward spiral for years as consumers opt to drink less alcohol or choose to drink cocktails or hard seltzer instead. And after several years of skyrocketing sales for hard seltzer, the category is seeing the pace of growth stabilize.

Euromonitor International estimates that the U.S. hard seltzer sales category increased just 35.1% in 2021 after being up 64.1% in 2020 and ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: EARI Beverage Group acquiring Railway City Brewing
Diversified beverage and media company EARI Beverage Group has announced that it has signed a letter of intent to purchase Railway City Brewing of St. Thomas, Ontario, the Canadian Beer News reported on February 1.

This is the second Ontario craft brewery acquisition for EARI in as many months, following its January takeover of Bell City Brewing in Brantford.

“This strategic acquisition will enable the company to take advantage of synergies between Bell City Brewing Company and Railway City Brewing Company,” said EARI Group CEO Bernard Rubin in a statement. “These two acquisitions will accelerate our growth into the robust market of craft brewing. The EARI Beverage Group is now well on track with the development of a diversified, growing, and profitable beverage portfolio.”

Financial terms and other details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Brewery news USA, PA: Forbes Trail Brewing coming soon to Stoystown
Forbes Trail Brewing is coming soon to Stoystown. The new brewery is opening up just a quarter-mile from the entrance of the Flight 93 Memorial, at 6108 Lincoln Highway, and has an estimated opening in Spring 2022, Breweries in PA (BIPA) reported on February 1.

The owner and head brewer Mike Fahy is quite experienced, having formerly been a brewer at both Whitehorse Brewing and Olde Bedford Brewing. Mike has also been behind the “With You Always” beer at Whitehorse, which was made to honor his late wife and raise money for the fight against ovarian cancer. As of 2022, he has raised over $50,000 for the Magee Women’s Research Institute & Foundation. Below is our Q&A with Mike.

BIPA: What’s in the name Forbes Trail Brewing Company?

Mike: In the 1700s, Forbes Trail was built and used to connect the East and West sides of the state. We are located off of RT 30, which is considered the old Forbes Trail. We love the history of this, and want to highlight it! We will do a lot of local things, including a Fort series of beers.

Brewery news USA, IL: Hop Butcher owners buy brewing facility in south suburban Bedford Park, Chicago
Months after announcing they would buy Half Acre’s original brewery on Chicago’s North Side, Hop Butcher owners Jeremiah Zimmer and Jude LaRose have also bought an even larger production facility in south suburban Bedford Park, a 25,000-square-foot space previously home to 5 Rabbit Cerveceria, the Chicago Tribune reported on February 2.

As 5 Rabbit downsizes to a smaller space in Pilsen, Zimmer and LaRose said they are eyeing growth for a portfolio of beers that has built one of the city’s most ardent fan bases.

For most of the brand’s seven-year existence, Hop Butcher has made beer at Miskatonic Brewing in Darien and as a contract brand at 5 Rabbit. But Zimmer and LaRose said they always envisioned operating their own bricks-and-mortar location. Suddenly they have two.

The 5 Rabbit deal closed in October; the Half Acre deal closed in December.

Zimmer and LaRose announced plans to buy Half Acre’s Lincoln Avenue location in the North Center neighborhood in May, but had yet to announce buying the former 5 Rabbit facility.

The deals arose concurrently, in fall 2020, and were negotiated at a similar pace, Zimmer said. He said no new investors were taken on in the company, owned equally by Zimmer and LaRose, to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Loons Landing Brewery to become Savage's first brewery this spring
A trio of experienced homebrewers are gearing up to launch Savage's first brewery this spring, The Business Journal reported on February 3.

Loons Landing Brewery was originally slated to open in January at 12925 Eagle Creek Parkway, but it has hit snags in getting its brewing equipment from overseas. It's now expected to open before summer, with its founders currently targeting a May 7 opening.

Co-owner and CEO Amy Johnson and her husband, Scott, have been brewing at home for about a decade. Their friend, Paul Ough, joined the team a couple years later, and the three of them decided they wanted to open a brewery together some day. They started looking for real estate off and on but only really got serious about making it happen right before the pandemic hit.

The trio had their eye on the space that's now the home of Loons Landing for several months before they signed a lease in September. They waited until Savage officials amended the city's zoning ordinance to all for breweries before making it official.

"The support from the city of Savage and the community has been overwhelming," Johnson said. "We have people volunteering to come in and help us do grunt work. It's ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Whiskers Brewing intends to launch as Newville’s first brewery in March
A few years ago, Dean Yaukey received a brewing kit from his wife for Christmas. Next month, they intend to open Whiskers Brewing, Newville’s first brewery, The Sentinel reported on February 1.

Whiskers Brewing, at 9 S. High St. in Newville, is a pet-themed brewery that Yaukey hopes to open after March 1, although the official date is still to be determined.

Due to the small capacity compared to larger breweries, Yaukey said Whiskers Brewing might be referred to as a microbrewery or a nanobrewery.

According to Newville Borough Manager Fred Potzer, the opening of the brewery is a direct result of Newville’s new status as a wet municipality, which means the sale of alcohol is permitted in the borough.

Borough residents voted 151-51 during the May primary to allow alcohol to be sold, ending its run as a dry borough.

“Newville has been dry, a dry town since 1939 and in May (2021) they had a vote that they ended up going wet,” Yaukey said.

Potzer said Yaukey’s business will be the first in Newville to sell alcohol since May’s referendum.

“As soon as the referendum passed, Dean made his application to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board,” Potzer said. “He first came in, met with myself ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Away Days Brewing opening second location in Troutdale's former City Hall
By the end of the year, McMenamins Edgefield won’t be the only brewery that’s operating out of a restored historic building in Troutdale, the Willamette Week reported on February 1.

Portland-based Away Days is in the process of taking over the former city hall at 104 SE Kibling Ave. and converting it into a full-service restaurant with a production facility. The Troutdale City Council approved the sale of the property on Jan. 25, which The Portland Tribune was first to report.

The 1922 building has sat empty for approximately 10 years after structural problems forced staffers to relocate. The city looked into restoration operations, but a 2019 bond levy that would’ve funded that work failed to pass.

Fortunately, the beloved old site does not have a date with the wrecking ball. Away Days will now lead the refurbishment, and Troutdale has promised to assist with development and permit credits.

“Our hope is to be open by the end of the year to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the building,” Away Days co-owner Niki Diamond tells WW. “Our Southeast Portland taproom will stay as it is, and we hope to use our current, smaller system for special brews and collaborations.”

Away Days—a reference to the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Angelina Brewing Company to close permanently on February 5
Angelina Brewing Company in Lufkin will be permanently closing Saturday, February 5th, KTRE reported.

The establishment has been serving the Lufkin community for the past three years. Mark Hicks, Lufkin’s mayor and the owner of the restaurant, said the decision was a hard one to make, but the current economic conditions brought on by the pandemic emphasized their challenges.

“There’s a lot of shortages obviously right now with everyday products, food shortages, costs are increasing, and inflation is obviously a concern of ours. And it is hard to find good people,” Hicks said.

Hicks said they have considered closing since the fourth quarter of 2021, he wants to thank the community for their loyal business.

Brewery news USA, OH: Mucky Duck Brewing Co.’s owners shut down their brewery
Mucky Duck Brewing Co.’s owners have officially shut down their brewery, Cleveland.com reported on February 1.

“We were hoping to fade away quietly,” said Erica Antoniotti, who owned the brewery with her husband, Joe Wathey.

The brewery actually closed at the end of September, she said, but the sign came down recently because the lease was up Monday, Jan. 31.

Antoniotti and Wathey opened Nauti Vine Winery in 2013 and followed three years later with the brewpub across the street. The brewery initially covered 3,000 square feet and had an 80-person capacity at 4019 S. Main St. in the Portage Lakes area.

“It was really a business decision. It was going to be a three-year lease,” she said. “We just decided we don’t want to be in this business anymore. It’s kind of over-saturated in our town. People come, they get a sample or two, and they run off to the next brewery ‘cause they’re so many to see. The winery people seem to stay for a couple of hours and enjoy themselves.”

She stressed the closure wasn’t due to a Covid-specific cause but the brewery resulted in “too much work for the payoff.”

“The winery pretty much runs itself. The brewery is a lot of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Hidden Mother Brewery announces closure
It’s almost last call at Hidden Mother Brewery, KXLY reported on January 31.

A post on the brewery’s Facebook page said it was closing and this was its farewell week.

All pints, growler fills and crowlers are $1. The brews will keep flowing until there isn’t any left. It is BYOG (bring your own glass.) Make sure you stop by and pick up some of the last brews before it shuts its doors for good.

The post also thanked the Spokane community for everything.

“To our community: thank you so much for your continued support! It has been such a joy to serve and work alongside so many awesome people and we definitely would not have made it this far without you. Thank you. Spokane we love you!!”

Barley news South Africa: Malting barley production falls short of AB InBev’s mandate
South Africa’s malting barley production fell 95 000 tonnes short of Anheuser-Busch InBev’s (AB InBev) 360 000 tonne-mandate during the past season, due to farmers rather planting crops with lower risk, such as canola and wheat, the Farmer’s Weekly reported on February 1.

“Barley production is at an all-time low. We need a turn-around strategy to make it attractive to farmers again,” José de Kock, chairperson of Grain SA’s Barley Industry Committee, said during the organisation’s recent regional annual general meeting in Rietpoel, Western Cape.

He said drought conditions negatively affected yields in the Swartland and Southern Cape regions between 2017 and 2019, while COVID-19-related bans on the sale of liquor that started in 2020, resulted in a surplus that was 49% higher than the previous year.

AB InBev lowered its intake in response, from 475 000 tonnes to 365 000 tonnes, which farmers struggled to reach because of various challenges.

De Kock explained that Swartland farmers only produced 6 000 tonnes of their 22 000 tonne-mandate, because of a stand-off between AB InBev and silo companies over the storage of barley.

Farmers who took the risk of planting barley ended up having to transport their crops from the Swartland to the Southern Cape region.

Brewery news UK: Beer and meat producers cautiously welcome CO2 deal
Food and drink makers have cautiously welcomed a deal that will secure UK production of carbon dioxide, which is used in making meat, beer, baked goods and fizzy drinks, for at least three months, The Guardian reported on February 1.

Meat processors, brewers, bakers and soft drink producers all use CO2 in making and packaging their goods. It is also required for the humane slaughter of animals including pigs and chickens, and is used by hospitals and nuclear power plants.

A short government statement said the new industry-led deal would enable CF Fertiliser plant in Billingham, County Durham, to continue to operate.

The plant was scheduled for potential shutdown this week after a three-month emergency deal brokered by the government came to an end on Monday.

That deal was prompted by a crisis in CO2 supplies in late September as high energy prices combined with annual maintenance shutdowns to bring UK production to a near halt.

The government was forced to use taxpayer money to fund a three-week bailout for CF Industries, which accounts for 60% of the UK’s CO2 supplies, to stave off supply chain chaos before the first three-month deal was agreed. It said it would not put up further funds.

Barley news Ukraine: Barley exports in 2021/22 total 5.5 mln tonnes
Ukraine has exported 38.6 million tonnes of grain so far in the 2021/22 July-June season, up 31.6% from the same stage a season earlier, agriculture ministry data showed on February 2.

The total included 17 million tonnes of wheat, 5.5 million tonnes of barley and 15.6 million tonnes of corn, the data showed.

Agriculture Minister Roman Leshchenko has said the country harvested a record 84 million tonnes of grain in clean weight in 2021, up from 65 million tonnes in 2020.

The ministry has said the 2021/22 exports could include 24.5 million tonnes of wheat, 30.9 million of corn and 5.2 million of barley.

Ukraine's exports last season included 23.1 million tonnes of corn, 16.6 million of wheat and 4.2 million of barley.

Brewery news Australia: Pubs, clubs and brewers call for beer tax relief
The Australian Hotels Association (AHA), Clubs Australia (CA) and the Brewers Association (BA) are calling on the Federal Government to deliver draught beer tax relief, The Shout reported on January 31.

The associations say a 50 per cent draught beer tax reduction would lower tax bills by A$500 for an average pub, and more importantly would be a huge help to venues that have done the right thing by closing their doors when they have been asked to.

“Twice a year for 35 years pubs and drinkers have copped a tax hike on draught beer,” Queensland Hotels Association Chief Executive Bernie Hogan said.

“This year – after our members have done the right thing throughout the pandemic and at a time when jobs and businesses hang in the balance – we ask that pubs and drinkers get a break.

“Every beer poured in a glass through pubs and clubs creates local jobs, brings people together and enlivens communities.

“A tax cut of 50 per cent to the current excise rate would reduce the price of a schooner by about 35 cents turning the tap on some much-needed relief for beer drinkers and pubs.”

Draught beer tax will increase again tomorrow, with Australia already home to the ...More info on site
