Malt news UK: Anglia Maltings (Holdings) names a new CEO
A business leader with a passion for craft beer has been appointed to lead the company which owns a major Norfolk maltings, the Eastern Daily Press reported on February 14.

Stuart Sands is the new chief executive at Anglia Maltings (Holdings), a group which includes Crisp Malt, based at Great Ryburgh near Fakenham.

The company was previously led and developed by David Thompson, who died last July.

Mr Sands arrives from his previous role in the USA, where he spent more than five years with the rapidly-expanding Country Malt Group, first as director of finance, then general manager.

During his tenure, the group served an American craft brewing industry whose members numbered over 10,000 - which he said "fuelled my enthusiasm for craft beers".

He now looks forward to bringing that expertise to East Anglia - a farming heartland of malting barley grown for the brewing and distilling industries.

“I’ve joined a fantastic business with great people, and am really looking forward to working with them to see just how much more we can achieve for our customers,” he said. UK: Anglia Maltings (Holdings) names a new CEO

Brewery news Turkey: Alcohol tax hike drives life out of Turkey’s pubs and bars
In a waterfront Istanbul neighbourhood that once buzzed with cafe and pub life, there are now only empty tables after nearly 50 percent tax hikes on alcohol. The tax is one of the biggest blows to alcohol consumption by a government often accused by its opponents of eroding the pillars of modern Turkey, an overwhelmingly Muslim nation but an officially secular state, the Daily Times reported on February 13.

The blow was felt particularly hard in the Besiktas neighbourhood on the European side of the Bosphorus. Suleyman Gunes expressed frustration as he searched for customers during an evening rush hour this week outside the pub where he works.

“It’s not like it used to be. At this time of day, we were full, like 80 to 90 percent and now it’s around 30 to 40 percent,” the 32-year-old told AFP.

“Customers stand up and leave soon after they see the prices on the menu,” Gunes said.

Besiktas is one of the most popular and vibrant Istanbul quarters, with its universities, well-known football club, and young population, as well as many cafes and bars.

“How can you expect a man to give half of his daily money to a pint of beer?”

In January, the Turkish government ...More info on site

Barley news Canada & USA: US and Canada scheduled to receive rare malting barley cargoes from Argentina and Australia
The US and Canada are scheduled to receive rare malting barley cargoes from Argentina and Australia, respectively, this month, as drought conditions in North America last summer have weighed on both countries' production of crop, the Argus Media reported on February 11.

A US-bound vessel carrying 43,750t of malting barley was scheduled to leave Necochea port in Argentina last week, line-up data show. The cargo is being exported by Argentinian firms Ocaco and Campoamor.

It represents the US' biggest single barley purchase from Argentina since at least 2012, customs data show. Argentina last exported malt barley to the US in 2016, when a small 198t cargo was shipped in January, while shipments of product to the US previously reached an annual high of 2,985t in 2014. It implies that this recent purchase would already put US imports of malting barley from Argentina to a new high this year.

And at least one more US-bound malting barley cargo is scheduled to leave Argentinian ports later this month, participants said.

Meanwhile, GrainCorp is scheduled to ship a 30,000 tonne malting barley cargo to Canada from Port Geelong in Australia on 24 February, according to latest line-up data. No malting barley cargo has previously been shipped in ...More info on site
