Canada & USA: US and Canada scheduled to receive rare malting barley cargoes from Argentina and Australia
|
The US and Canada are scheduled to receive rare malting barley cargoes from Argentina and Australia, respectively, this month, as drought conditions in North America last summer have weighed on both countries' production of crop, the Argus Media reported on February 11.
A US-bound vessel carrying 43,750t of malting barley was scheduled to leave Necochea port in Argentina last week, line-up data show. The cargo is being exported by Argentinian firms Ocaco and Campoamor.
It represents the US' biggest single barley purchase from Argentina since at least 2012, customs data show. Argentina last exported malt barley to the US in 2016, when a small 198t cargo was shipped in January, while shipments of product to the US previously reached an annual high of 2,985t in 2014. It implies that this recent purchase would already put US imports of malting barley from Argentina to a new high this year.
And at least one more US-bound malting barley cargo is scheduled to leave Argentinian ports later this month, participants said.
Meanwhile, GrainCorp is scheduled to ship a 30,000 tonne malting barley cargo to Canada from Port Geelong in Australia on 24 February, according to latest line-up data. No malting barley cargo has previously been shipped in

USA, MD: Pariah Brewing Co. officially opens taproom and brewery in Hampden
|
California’s Pariah Brewing Co. has officially opened its taproom and brewery in the former home of Union Craft Brewing at 1700 Union Ave. in Hampden, the Baltimore Fishbowl reported on February 15.
The San Diego-based brewery was originally scheduled to open late last year, but ran into supply chain and COVID-related issues.
Pariah soft opened the Hampden location on Jan. 21 and held a grand opening this weekend to align with the brewery’s fifth anniversary.
While the brewery hails from California, Pariah’s founder, co-owner, and brewmaster, Brian Mitchell, grew up in Prince George’s County, and its distribution manager Steven Sabers is a Baltimore native.
The Hampden brewery will be open Wednesday-Friday from 4-10 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 12-10 p.m., according to their website.

USA, OH: Collision Bend Brewing Co. to open 25,000-square-foot-production facility, taproom in Euclid
|
Collision Bend Brewing Co. has plans to expand from its restaurant along the Cuyahoga River on the east bank of the Flats with a brewing facility and taproom in an industrial building in Euclid, Cleveland.com reported on February 15.
The brewery plans to lease 25,000 square feet of warehouse space at 1261 Babbitt Road, next to Amazon’s facility in the eastern suburb. Collision Bend brewer and part owner Luke Purcell said the lease with the building’s owner should be signed soon.
But Purcell has already placed orders for some pieces of large equipment needed to start brewing there, in a sign that it would be very hard to turn back, he said. The brewery’s owners hope to start production there by summer, with the taproom “up and running by late summer, early fall,” General Manager Michael Grano said.
Collision Bend opened in 2017 in the old Hausheer Building on Old River Road in Cleveland, the former home of the Watermark Restaurant. Purcell, who worked at Great Lakes Brewing Co. before making beer for Collision Bend, said the restaurant had a busy summer and that he knew he was headed toward ramping up production to sell more of its beer in stores.

USA, MN: Bucks Mill Brewing finds home in Detroit Lakes
|
Bucks Mill Brewing finalized their lease in the former Hometown Crafts and Fabrics space in the Washington Square Mall on Feb. 1, DL-Online reported on February 13.
The owners of the startup brewery said they plan to make their space in downtown Detroit Lakes a premiere destination for community members and beer tourists alike.
"I do think once this place is done, it will be stunning," said Chuck Fritz, one of the brewery founders. "It will be someplace where you walk in and just go 'wow.'"
The owners said they have a long way to go before any beer can be served in their new space, but they are also hopeful they will have the major renovations, licensing and permitting all complete at some point during the summer. They plan to post construction updates on their Facebook page throughout the remodel process.
Garage doors will replace the windows along Washington Avenue, the owners said, which will give the patrons an open air feel. They hope some supply chain issues due to the ongoing pandemic are fixed in coming months, because garage doors are becoming increasing scarce.
Overall, the new brewing location is about a 7,000-square-foot space that increases to 9,500 square feet with the addition

Canada, BC: Detonate Brewing put up for sale, to close if no buyer is found
|
Five years after launching as the first brewery in the town of Summerland on the west shore of BC’s Okanagan Lake, Detonate Brewing has been put on the market, and will close soon if no buyer is found, the Canadian Beer News reported on February 14.
In a note posted to the brewery’s Facebook page last week, owner Nathan Rosin says that “there has been a lot of highs and lows through operating this little brewery and I am extremely grateful for the support of the community but it has come time for me to step back and spend more time with my family.”
The post also notes that to mark the brewery’s 5th anniversary, the taproom offered $5 pints over this past weekend, and will be doing the same on Friday February 18th and Saturday February 19th from 3:00 PM until “at least” 7:00 PM.

USA, OR: Hair of the Dog to stop brewing after almost 30 years in the business
|
After almost 30 years brewing beer in Portland, Hair of the Dog will sell his last bottle of Doggie Claws this year. Founder Alan Sprints announced Hair of the Dog’s impending closure on Facebook on February 14, as he prepares to retire, the Eater Portland reported.
“I do have a few more beers to release and lots of beer to sell, so I’ll keep the tasting room open until sometime this summer,” Sprints says in a video announcement. “Beer has been very very good to me, I feel so fortunate to have been able to spend over half my life doing something I love so much.”
In the announcement video, Sprints did not name a specific closing date. Sprints emphasizes that he does not plan to sell the brewery, though he’s open to collaborating with other brewers in the future. The Oregonian first reported on the impending closure.
Sprints opened Hair of the Dog in 1993, a production brewery with no outward facing tasting room, in the Brooklyn neighborhood. Over time, the brewery developed a reputation for high-ABV, bottle conditioned beers — it was ahead of the curve when it came to the barrel-aged brewing renaissance, as well as the IPA heyday. In

USA, CA: Magnolia Brewing Company to shutter its Dogpatch location
|
Longtime San Francisco favorite Magnolia Brewing Company announced on February 14 that it will shutter its Dogpatch location. In a post on Instagram, the company cites the impacts of COVID-19 and a desire to focus on its flagship location in the Haight, which it has run since its launch in 1997, as reasons for the decision, the Eater San Francisco reported.
In an email to Eater SF on February 11, the business confirmed a tip that the Dogpatch location of their operation would be closing. The Eater SF tipster added that the landlord of the brewery’s 3rd Street space had raised the brewery’s rent, and, when the company looked to negotiate the price, the landlord let Magnolia know they already had a new tenant in mind: a plant-based salmon company. The brewery did not offer Eater SF any further comment or confirm that the nature of the building’s new tenant. The director of marketing for Plantish, a popular plant-based salmon alternative, told Eater SF they will not be the new tenants.
Magnolia Brewery has had a dynamic decade. In 2014, the Haight-Ashbury corner business expanded to the east side of the city after numerous delays and setbacks. The Dogpatch expansion featured a

UK: Anglia Maltings (Holdings) names a new CEO
|
A business leader with a passion for craft beer has been appointed to lead the company which owns a major Norfolk maltings, the Eastern Daily Press reported on February 14.
Stuart Sands is the new chief executive at Anglia Maltings (Holdings), a group which includes Crisp Malt, based at Great Ryburgh near Fakenham.
The company was previously led and developed by David Thompson, who died last July.
Mr Sands arrives from his previous role in the USA, where he spent more than five years with the rapidly-expanding Country Malt Group, first as director of finance, then general manager.
During his tenure, the group served an American craft brewing industry whose members numbered over 10,000 - which he said "fuelled my enthusiasm for craft beers".
He now looks forward to bringing that expertise to East Anglia - a farming heartland of malting barley grown for the brewing and distilling industries.
“I’ve joined a fantastic business with great people, and am really looking forward to working with them to see just how much more we can achieve for our customers,” he said.

Turkey: Alcohol tax hike drives life out of Turkey’s pubs and bars
|
In a waterfront Istanbul neighbourhood that once buzzed with cafe and pub life, there are now only empty tables after nearly 50 percent tax hikes on alcohol. The tax is one of the biggest blows to alcohol consumption by a government often accused by its opponents of eroding the pillars of modern Turkey, an overwhelmingly Muslim nation but an officially secular state, the Daily Times reported on February 13.
The blow was felt particularly hard in the Besiktas neighbourhood on the European side of the Bosphorus. Suleyman Gunes expressed frustration as he searched for customers during an evening rush hour this week outside the pub where he works.
“It’s not like it used to be. At this time of day, we were full, like 80 to 90 percent and now it’s around 30 to 40 percent,” the 32-year-old told AFP.
“Customers stand up and leave soon after they see the prices on the menu,” Gunes said.
Besiktas is one of the most popular and vibrant Istanbul quarters, with its universities, well-known football club, and young population, as well as many cafes and bars.
“How can you expect a man to give half of his daily money to a pint of beer?”
In January, the Turkish government
