Brewery news World: Two of world’s largest brewers warn of higher prices this year
Two of the world’s largest breweries have warned that higher production costs, which could be passed on to customers in 2022, The Local reported on February 17.

Both Heineken and Denmark’s own Carlsberg have suggested higher prices are on the horizon.

Carlsberg’s CEO Cees ‘t Hart recently told Danish newspaper Børsen that the brewery is currently in negotiations with customers, which would see Carlsberg receive higher payments for supplying its beer products.

Heineken signalled price increases on February 16, when the Dutch company published its annual results. Higher production costs would mean the price of beer will increase, Heineken said.

Statements from the two companies mean customers should prepare for more expensive beer in the near future, according to an analyst.

“We have already seen that things have already got more expensive in areas like dairy, which have also been hit by high raw material costs,” said Per Fogh, stockmarket analyst with Sydbank.

“We can also see that breweries have been hit by these high raw material costs. You can therefore expect beer to get more expensive in 2022,” he said.

Heineken said that it expects production costs to go up by around 15 percent, although this does not necessarily mean the price of a glass of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Boston Beer shares see quarterly loss of $0.09 per share versus the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.27
Boston Beer came out with a quarterly loss of $0.09 per share versus the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.27. This compares to earnings of $2.56 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items, Nasdaq reported on February 16.

This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of -102.75%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this brewer would post earnings of $4.04 per share when it actually produced earnings of $2.97, delivering a surprise of -26.49%.

Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates just once.

Boston Beer, which belongs to the Zacks Beverages - Alcohol industry, posted revenues of $348.09 million for the quarter ended December 2021, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 20.36%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $460.94 million. The company has topped consensus revenue estimates two times over the last four quarters.

The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.

Boston Beer shares have lost about 16.4% since the beginning of the year versus the S&P 500's decline of -6.2%.

While Boston Beer has underperformed the market so far this year, the question that comes ...More info on site

Brewery news Indonesia: Bali craft brewers boosting Indonesia’s beer market
Putu Wiranatha watched with growing unease as the coronavirus pandemic threatened to upend his plans to launch a beer company in 2020, the Nikkei Asia reported on February 17.

In March of that year, authorities in Bali asked people to stay at home, restaurant dining hours were reduced, and the lights went out on the island's vibrant nightlife. Within months, tourist arrivals would plummet to near zero.

"That was the moment when we realized this is a problem," he told Nikkei Asia.

The 26-year-old faced a tough choice: delay the launch - wasting months of planning and momentum - or carry on. He chose to proceed.

Nearly two years later, his brewery Kura Kura is the toast of the island and among a handful of small companies on the cusp of disrupting Indonesia's beer market.

Along with Bali-based breweries Islands Of Imagination and Island Brewing, Kura Kura is on the front line of a beer renaissance in Southeast Asia's largest economy, a market long dominated by a handful of big players turning out bland, mass-produced lagers.

Somewhat improbably, the three breweries have all launched during the pandemic, a once-in-a-lifetime economic shock that has added to challenges ranging from hard-to-obtain licenses, an inefficient Indonesian bureaucracy and Islamic-based ...More info on site

Brewery news The Netherlands: Catering industry is stocking up on beer amid relaxed anti-Covid rules
The Netherlands’ catering industry is stocking up on beer now that the corona measures are increasingly relaxed, including longer opening hours. Carnival can also be celebrated again, where the beer will of course flow freely in cafes and bars, the Netherlands News Live reported on February 16.

Incidentally, the prices of beer have been raised by the large brewers in the Netherlands because of the rising costs of raw materials, energy and transport. Beer prices will rise 3 to 5 percent this year, according to trade magazine Misset Horeca. The catering industry has already said that they will pass on these higher prices to the customer.

A spokeswoman for the Swinkels brewery, known from Bavaria and Palm, among others, certainly notices that it is busy with orders. “We are working with all our might to ensure that we can complete this logistics operation. It’s all hands on deck.” She states that there is a lot of stock going on for the carnival, which starts in a week and a half. “We are also especially happy for our catering customers that more and more is possible.”

At AB InBev, with brands such as Jupiler, Hoegaarden, Leffe and Hertog Jan, they also see an extra ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Pubgoers put on notice about sharp increases in beer prices
British pubgoers have been put on notice that they face sharp increases in the price of a pint as mounting inflationary pressures in the brewing industry combine with rising staff and utility costs and the looming end of coronavirus tax relief, the Financial Times reported on February 17.

Beer industry executives and analysts warned that drinkers had yet to feel the full impact of brewers’ rising costs, which Dolf van den Brink, Heineken’s chief executive, this week described as “off the charts”.

Prices of malting barley, the most important ingredient for lager, have more than doubled in the past year, while the industry also has to contend with the shipping logjams that are clogging other global supply chains.

The situation reflects the unrelenting broader inflationary pressures in the UK economy. Prices rose at an annual rate of 5.5 per cent in January, the fastest in 30 years, according to official statistics published on Wednesday, and the Bank of England has forecast that inflation will peak above 7 per cent in April.

Office for National Statistics figures show that input prices for UK makers of alcoholic drinks rose at an annual rate of 7.9 per cent in January, the fastest pace in a decade.

Given that ...More info on site

Barley news France: Nearly 94% of winter barley crop gets good/excellent rating in farm office’s latest report
Nearly all soft wheat crops in France, the European Union's biggest producer, were in good shape in the week to Feb. 14, farm office FranceAgriMer said on February 18 in its first cereal crop update of 2022.

An estimated 95% of soft wheat, France's main cereal crop, was in good or excellent condition, unchanged from a week earlier.

The latest rating was slightly below a 99% score in FranceAgriMer's previous report issued before winter but was above the 86% registered a year ago.

Wheat crops sown last autumn in western Europe have generally benefited from moderate winter weather and adequate moisture, according to analysts.

Growing conditions also remained favourable for French winter barley and durum wheat, with good/excellent ratings of 94% and 89% respectively, FranceAgriMer says.

Sowing of spring barley, the first major cereal crop to be drilled at the end of winter, was well under way with 27% of the expected area sown by Feb. 14, the office said.

That compared with 20% a week earlier and 16% a year ago.
