Brewery news Brazil: Heineken to invest in modernizing its São Paulo breweries
The Dutch beer giant Heineken announced a new investment in the state of São Paulo, as disclosed on the SP Government website, the Play Crazy Game reported on February 23.

The R$ 320 million resource is intended for modernizing some of the company’s breweries in the state – sources list the factories in Campos do Jordão, Araraquara, Itu, and Jacareí as those that will undergo modernization.

In addition, the investment will also serve for more sustainability actions and good environmental practices in breweries.

In addition, as highlighted by the state government, the company intends to create more jobs.

Brewery news Japan & Myanmar: Kirin says Myanmar brewery partner filed new liquidation petition
Japanese beverage company Kirin Holdings said on Monday, February 21 that its military-linked partner in a Myanmar brewery has filed a new petition to liquidate the joint venture.

Kirin has been in a dispute with local partner Myanma Economic Holdings Public Company Limited (MEHPCL) on how to dissolve their brewery venture following a military coup that ousted the democratically elected government last year.

Kirin said in a statement it just became aware that MEHPCL filed a petition on Jan 27 to a Yangon court seeking to liquidate the venture, a day after the same court dismissed a similar petition.

The Japanese brewery said it would respond to the new petition accordingly.

Kirin said last week it intended to sell its stakes in two businesses in Myanmar and withdraw from the country.

Brewery news UK: Diageo to carry out £1.7 bln share buyback
Diageo PLC said it is to carry out a share buyback worth £1.7 bln as the third part of a previously announced capital returns programme, ProActiveInvestors.co.uk reported on February 21.

The Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff and Guinness maker had already bought back shares totalling £2.25 bln on 31 January 2020 and 11 February 2022 as part of the £4.5 bln exercise, which is scheduled to finish by the end of its financial year to June 2023.

UBS will carry out the latest buyback with £1.4 bln of the shares to be acquired by June and the whole amount by 5 October 2022.

Diageo said it will decide whether to use share buybacks or special dividends for the remaining £650 mln of the returns programme depending on market conditions at the time.

Brewery news Thailand: Major manufacturers to raise liquor and beer prices
Thailand’s major manufacturers and distributors of liquor and beer have notified trade partners that they will raise prices of selected products from next week, said an informed source on February 22, The Nation reports.

From next month, the price of rice whisky will rise by Bt120 per case of small bottles – from Bt1,242 to Bt1,362 – and by Bt54 per case of large bottles, from Bt1,158 to Bt1,212, said the source. “The price of beer will also go up by Bt2-4 per can, or Bt48 per case of large bottles [from Bt805 to Bt853],” the source added.

However, the Excise Department said on February 22 that no manufacturers have notified the department of prices rises. The law requires that manufacturers give notice if they intend to raise the price by more than five per cent of the level suggested by the department.

The department insisted that the government had no policy to increase tax on alcoholic beverages, so any price hike must be due to other reasons.

Krungthep Turakij newspaper on February 22 surveyed alcohol retailers in Chiang Mai’s Saraphi district and found that though prices were still the same, most shops anticipate rises after March 1.

“Small retailers will be severely affected as ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Soju prices to rise, beer may follow suit
HiteJinro announced it will raise soju prices by 7.9 percent, and other alcohol makers are expected to follow as the price of ethanol goes up, The Korea JoongAng Daily reported on February 20. The factory price of HiteJinro’s Chamisul Original and Chamisul Fresh will rise an average 7.9 percent to 1,166 won (98 cents) for a 360 mililiter (12 fluid ounce) bottle starting Feb. 23. The price of Jinro Soju will also rise 7.9 percent. The company didn't state the factory price after the rise, but said it will be lower than for Chamisul. It is the first price hike for Jinro Soju since its release in 2019. For the two Chamisuls, it is the first rise in two years and nine months. HiteJinro blamed a rise in raw materials and logistics costs for the increase, and said that production costs rose more than 14 percent over the past three years. The Korea Ethanol Supplies Company raised prices of ethanol, a key ingredient in soju, for the first time since 2012. A 200-liter drum of ethanol now costs 391,527 won, up 7.8 percent from 351,203 won. Other alcohol makers are expected ...More info on site
