Barley news Canada: Government invests in market development and growth for Canadian malting barley
Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced on February 28 an investment of over C$960,000 for the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) to expand existing and develop new markets for Canadian barley and barley products, The Newswire reported.

Canadian barley, as a cereal crop, is important for crop rotations, furthering sustainability and has a lower environmental impact compared to other crops. Barley is also the main feed stock for the livestock industry in Western Canada. This investment demonstrates the Government of Canada's commitment to help strengthen, diversify and grow markets for Canada's malting barley, which in turn contributes to a stronger Canadian agricultural sector.

With this funding, through the AgriMarketing Program, CMBTC will undertake marketing and promotional initiatives in major export markets and prospective countries. It will also provide technical services to optimize the quality and performance of Canadian barley, as well as education and training to help customers gain acceptance of the unique qualities and special processing attributes of new malting barley varieties.

The AgriMarketing Program, under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, aims to increase and diversify exports to international markets and seize domestic market opportunities through industry-led promotional activities that differentiate Canadian products and producers, and leverage ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Olde Salem Brewing Company to open second location in downtown Roanoke
A brewery company will soon be bringing some “Salem flavor” to the Roanoke market, WSLS reported on February 27.

The Olde Salem Brewing Company took to Facebook on February 27 to announce that it will soon open a second location at 315 Market Street in downtown Roanoke. This is where Deschutes Brewery Tasting Room used to be located before it closed its doors permanently last month.

While the brewing company initially planned to open a second location in the Wasena area, the company said it was unable to do so given that the property needed more work done than they anticipated.

“It was a tough decision, but when the opportunity arose for 315 Market St, we knew we had to take it. Everyone at Olde Salem Brewing Company is thrilled to join downtown Roanoke, we can’t wait to see you soon!” the company said in a Facebook post.

An opening date has not been announced yet.

Brewery news USA, NY: Jones Beach Brewing Co. set to officially launch to the public on March 11
Jones Beach Brewing Co. (JBBC) is officially set to launch to the public on March 11, 2022, at The Helm Restaurant in Freeport, thanks to partnership with Lithology Brewing, LLC. JBBC will offer its flagship nautical-inspired brew, Jones Inlet IPA, Brewbound reported on February 25.

Christopher Mills, Long Island native, is thrilled to announce his start-up’s opening: a brewery that pays homage to Long Island’s working class, parks, beaches & marine life. By merging his two passions — great tasting beer and the betterment of LI communities — Mills was able to create the brewery he always envisioned. A brewery that Robert Moses would appreciate.

Packaging will be the first to include a tide chart, providing boaters information on high tides for planning safe passage ahead of time, as well as their iconic Limulus logo.

“Our logo is really special: a horseshoe crab. It’s a staple of Long Island beaches and is one of the four oldest animal species. Of course, our focus is amazing beer, it’s also important for us to remain committed to the preservation of these marine arthropods and their changing environment,” says Mills.

For four years, Jones Beach Brewing Co. has been working on their craft and brewery launch ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Break Rock Brewing coming this week to Quincy
Quincy will get its only brewery this week when Break Rock Brewing, a craft beer destination years in the making, opens to the public on March 3, The Patriot Ledger reported.

"It's exciting and I feel a lot of relief," co-owner James Southwood said. "It's been a long time coming, that's for sure." In its new Marina Bay space, Break Rock can seat just under 200 people, plus another 18 when its patio opens in May. On one side of the large room is the brewery and the bar, and on the other side is seating, Skee-ball, a basketball game, a 1980s arcade cabinet and dozens of board games.

"We want to build a community. I want this to be like an upscale neighborhood bar," Southwood said. "We want people to know they can come here to have a reliable good time. Our doors are open to anyone and everyone."

To start, Break Rock will serve six or seven beers on tap, including a kölsch, golden ale, pale ale, stout, English mild and several New England IPAs, which Southwood expects will be the most popular offerings. The brewery will have snack offerings like chips and cheese and cracker board. Customers can also ...More info on site

Barley news Europe: Barley crop 2022 development continues in mostly positive manner
Barley crop 2022 development continues in a mostly positive manner across Europe, with winter barley looking very positive (good moisture and above normal temperatures) and this includes autumn-sown spring varieties), RMI Analytics said in their latest report.

For spring barley sowing, France is off to an early start, but stalled at the moment due to weather. The UK is also off to an early start for spring barley sowing.

Early sowing normally translates to improved yield potential as crops avoid to a greater extent the higher summer heat.

RMI Analytics’ initial crop 2022 estimate shows a rebound in production to 61.1 mln tonnes.

Barley prices in France are distinctly split between crop 2021 and crop 2022. In Scandinavia and the UK, prices are stronger and breaking away from French prices.

Feed barley prices are up on the Black Sea news and uncertainty around the ability for this region to execute shipments amidst the military situation.

Brewery news Asia: Heineken highlights increased experimentation and ‘easy-drinking beers’ are fast -growing trends in Asia
Beer heavyweight Heineken has highlighted increased experimentation and what it calls ‘easy-drinking beers’ as fast-growing category trends within the alcoholic beverages sector in Asia, and expects these to expand even further in the coming year, Food Navigator Asia reported on March 1. According to Heineken APAC Marketing Transformation Director Sarah Maddock, ‘easy-drinking beers’ have garnered an increasing consumer base in Asia over the past several years, and the firms expects to increase this base in 2022.

“One of the fast growing areas [in beer] is easy-drinking beers, which are also typically lower in alcohol as these can accompany food well especially on occasions where consumers are looking for an easy choice,” Maddock told FoodNavigator-Asia.

“One of our easy drinking beers, Heineken Silver, has gained a lot of fans since we launched in markets like Vietnam, China and Taiwan over the past two years [based on its design as] a smooth and easy to drink beer with a crisp subtle finish.

“We are excited to introduce Heineken Silver to many more consumers across the region in 2022.”

She highlighted how such consumer behaviour is similarly driving the zero-alcohol beer market, a market where the firm’s Heineken 0.0 ...More info on site

Brewery news Italy: Heineken investing €73 million in modernizing its Assemini brewery
Heineken Italia is investing €73 million to modernise and expand its Assemini brewery, near Cagliari, where Ichnusa beer is produced, the European Supermarket Magazine reported on March 1.

The renovation will see the addition of a new refrigeration plant, carbon dioxide storage facilities, and cooling towers.

The project will contribute in improving environmental performance, with a reduction in the consumption of water, electricity and emissions.

The investment will boost the production and packaging capacity of the oldest brewery in Sardinia, the brewer noted. When fully operational (in 2024), the packaging capacity will increase by more than 60% compared to present numbers.

According to the company, its business plan will support the growth of beer production in Sardinia, with positive impact on the local and national production chain.

It is also part of a development agreement signed with Italy’s ministry of economic development, the National Agency for Inward Investment and Economic Development (Invitalia) and the Sardinia Region.

The expansion project will involve a contribution of approximately €14 million from the ministry of economic development and €200,000 from the Sardinia Region.

According to managing director Wietse Mutters, with this investment Heineken Italia aims to become a “driving force behind the recovery of beer and the agri-food economy”, after “the ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Australian barley producers expected to see higher returns due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could create a global shortfall in wheat and grain supply, meaning Australian grain producers could see even “higher returns,” according to ABARES’ Dr Jared Greenville, SkyNews.com.au reported on February 28.

The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences has estimated the country stands to make an extra A$12 billion this year from bumper crops, with the total value of those crops sitting at A$81 billion dollars.

However, conflict in Ukraine will only serve to bump up the prices for wheat and barley, as Russia and Ukraine account for about 20 to 30 per cent of the world’s wheat and barley exports.

“Russia’s also been limiting exports,” Dr Greenville told Sky News host Ross Greenwood.

“And so, as production globally starts to go back up into the next year, we’d expect some downward pressure on prices, but this is going to put upward pressure on prices.

This will mean “higher returns, higher incomes for Australian grain producers,” according to Dr Greenville, especially as there is a “real premium” for milling quality wheat at present.

“It would mean that our prices that we see, our export prices, remain pretty high.”

Brewery news Australia: Australians consume less beer but more often reach for craft products - study
Australia's typical craft beer drinker is a bearded bloke in his 30s happy to spend A$50 a week on his favourite brew - usually pale ale in a can - and likely to order it online, 7News reported on February 26.

At the same time nearly 80 per cent of men overall are fond of a craft drop compared to 21 per cent of women, and most have been in the habit of sampling microbrewery suds for at least 3-5 years.

The findings, contained in a comprehensive report by financial broker Savvy, also point to Australians consuming less beer in general but more often reaching for a craft product.

The industry in Australia has gone from strength to strength over the past two years, with 17.7 per cent growth in revenue, a 14.1 per cent sales share and brewers often producing up to 100,000 litres a year.

At the retail level, 39 per cent of craft beer drinkers spend A$30-50 per week and a third fork out up to A$100.

As for what hits the spot, the Savvy report cites a major survey by data gatherer Statista showing 88 per cent of craft drinkers prefer pale ale or extra pale ale followed by India pale ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries in talks to 'allay the government’s fears’ about home delivery of beer
United Breweries, the country’s largest beer company, is in talks with multiple states to 'allay the government’s fears’ about home delivery of beer, the company’s managing director Rishi Pardal said in an interview, adding that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict was adding to existing inflationary environment and companies were dealing with steep increase in prices of barley and supply disruptions, The Economic Times reported on March 1.

“We are in talks with various state governments to allow home delivery of beer and allay their fears on social concerns and tax leakages. We did see some headway in some states, but it’s like two steps forward, one step backwards,” he said.

With the onset of pandemic, many states invoked the Disaster Management Act to include the home delivery provision of alcoholic beverages in their excise acts. Both offline and online models of home delivery were enabled by a few states, but the model hasn’t taken off owing to multiple logistical and regulatory hurdles.

“We want consumers to buy beer in the same way they are buying other products. It’s a constant dialogue we are having with the states, and wherever we have had permission, we have shown that we are responsible,” Pardal said.

Barley news UK: Major maltster sees good potential for new spring barley variety in Scotland
Major malting group Simpsons Malt sees good potential for new spring barley variety Firefoxx to do well in Scotland, with one Perthshire grower set to put all his spring barley area into the malting variety, the Farmers Weekly reported on February 28.

Full approval for the variety will be considered by the maltsters in May.

The variety could make an inroad into the Scottish market to supply whisky distilleries where only three varieties – Laureate, Diablo and Sassy – are fully recommended.

Paul Huntley, cereal seeds director at Simpson Malt, has been following the variety’s progress through trials and grower evaluation since the spring of 2020, and says it looks well suited to Scotland.

“Beyond being a very visually attractive barley, Firefoxx has a strong agronomic package that stands up well to the Scottish weather.

“In the field, our growers found it was earlier to harvest than competitor varieties such as Tungsten, Laureate and Diablo – a valuable trait that becomes more attractive the further north you go,” he says.

Mr Huntley adds that farmers who grew Firefoxx last year were very pleased with its consistent on-farm performance, achieving very respectable yields.

They have all signed up to grow the variety again this year.

“Its overall grain quality ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Thai people increase spending on alcohol in Q4 2021
Thai people spent 78.542 billion baht on alcoholic beverages and cigarettes in the fourth quarter of 2021, higher than in the previous year, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said on February 28.

NESDC deputy secretary-general Jinanggoon Rojananan said that there. was a 0.1 percentage point increase over 2020.

The spending on alcoholic beverages in the fourth quarter of 2021 amounted to 49.51 billion baht, up 1.2 per cent quarter on quarter.

Meanwhile, the spending on cigarettes in the fourth quarter of 2021 totalled 29.032 billion baht, decreasing by 2 per cent from the previous quarter.

The increase in consumption of alcoholic beverages was attributed to easing of Covid restrictions, which allowed restaurants to sell alcoholic beverages from December 1 including the New Year Festival.

Overall, the consumption of these products in 2021 was down 1.8 per cent over the previous year because entertainment venues were closed and sales hours were restricted as part of Covid control measures.
