Brewery news South Korea: Oriental Brewery set to raise its prices
Oriental Brewery (OB) is set to raise the prices for its beer products by an average 7.7 percent on March 8, affected by the recent adjustment of the tax rate on alcohol following global inflation, The Korea Times reported on March 2.

It is the first time in six years for the brewery firm to increase its prices on its own since November 2016. Its beers such as Cass, Hanmac and OB Lager are subject to the price hike.

"We have tried to freeze the prices for the last six years, but it was inevitable due to the rising costs of raw and secondary materials after COVID-19 hit global supplies," an OB official said.

In January 2021, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance revised the tax law to fix the rate on beer and "makgeolli" products reflecting increased consumer prices. That resulted in an automatic price increase of 1.36 percent for all of OB's beers last year, reflecting the government's calculation of the annual inflation rate of 0.5 percent.

The international price of barley, the main ingredient of beer, soared by 33 percent in 2021 from 2019. The price of aluminum, which is a key material used to make cans, also jumped by 45 ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia & Ukraine: Diageo pauses exports to Russia and Ukraine
Spirits company Diageo, the maker of Smirnoff vodka and Guinness, has paused exports to Ukraine and Russia, the company said on March 3.

"Our priority is the safety of our people in Ukraine and the wider region," a spokesperson said.

Brewery news UK: Wetherspoons pubs drop Russian beer from their menus
UK pub company Wetherspoons has dropped Russian beer from its menus in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Metro UK reported on March 2.

Baltika Lager is brewed in St Petersburg, the birthplace of Vladimir Putin.

All bottles of the 5.4% beer – which cost £2.99 each – will be returned to distributor Carlsberg.

It is not known how much the move will cost the pub group.

In a statement, Wetherspoons said: ‘In light of the situation in Ukraine we just felt that we could not stock it anymore.

‘As of today all those beers won’t be available in any Wetherspoons pub and either have been or are in the process of being returned to the Carlsberg distributor.

‘We are not implying in any way that anyone involved with the brewery is directly involved with what’s going on, but we thought in light of the current situation our pubs don’t want to be serving Russian beers.’

Baltika Lager had been offered as part of the Wetherspoons World Beers selection as a way of introducing beers from across the globe to its customers.

One employee at Wetherspoons referenced boss Tim Martin, responding: ‘Big Tim doing bits to help the war effort, good lad.’

Another said: ‘That’s it, Putin ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Barley supply projected sharply downward for 2021-22
For 2021-22, Canadian barley supply is projected at 7.81 million tonnes, down sharply from 2020-21 and a record low level. This is primarily due to significant production issues during the 2021 growing season in Canada’s Prairie provinces, as well as record low carry-in stocks, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in their February report.

As a result of the tight supply, demand for both domestic feed consumption and exports will be sharply lower than last year. Carry-out stocks are projected at 0.3 mln tonnes, a record low level.

According to the stocks report published by Statistics Canada (STC), Canadian barley stocks at December 31, 2021 were pegged at 3.15 mln tonnes, 44% and 46% lower than last year and the previous five-year average, and the lowest in at least two decades.

This primarily reflected the changes in on-farm stocks on the Prairies, the main barley producing region. The significant drop in barley stocks was primarily caused by the production issues during the 2021 growing season on the Prairies. Commercial stocks also decreased significantly from last year, although were slightly higher than the previous five-year average. This implies a much slower shipping pace of barley over the coming months. Of the total stocks, approximately ...More info on site
