The Netherlands & Russia: Heineken to stop exports to, halt all new investments in Russia
|
Heineken will stop its exports to Russia because of the war in Ukraine. All new investments in the country have also been halted, the brewer confirms after reporting by NRC and others.
Heineken makes the beers Zhigulevskoe and Okhota for the local market in Russia. With approximately 1,800 employees, the company claims to be the third largest brewer in the country. However, the Russian market represents less than two percent of Heineken's worldwide sales.
A statement from the brewer says nothing about restrictions on local production. Heineken does indicate that the brewing and beverage sector is not subject to sanctions.
"We are shocked and saddened to see the tragedy unfold in Ukraine. Our hearts go out to all those affected," the company said. Heineken will continue to monitor developments closely in the coming days and weeks.

UK: Heineken unveils new lower-alcohol, less-bitter Heineken Silver beer
|
Heineken has unveiled its “biggest ever” launch – a lower-alcohol, less-bitter spin-off called Heineken Silver, The Grocer reported on March 4.
The brewing giant’s new lager (4% abv) uses an “ice-cold brewing process” to create a significantly less bitter taste than the brand’s core lager and a “lighter drinking profile”.
Heineken is set to splash £20 mln on marketing the launch, and will mount a one million can sampling campaign to build awareness.
The launch is especially designed to appeal to gen Z and millennial shoppers. The beer category was “underindexing with 18 to 34-year-olds – that’s a historic trend”, Heineken category & commercial strategy director Alexander Wilson told The Grocer.
This age group was “looking for a beer that is a little bit less bitter”, he added – hence the new drink had “roughly half the bitterness of Heineken original” at 10 IBUs (International Bitterness Units).
It will launch on 21 March in 330ml bottles and 330ml ‘slimline’ cans, which Wilson said would “nicely differentiate it from the rest of the category” as well as the core beer.
It marks the second major Heineken launch in weeks: last month, the brewer unveiled Strongbow Ultra Dark Fruit, a lower-calorie cider similarly aimed at younger shoppers.

Australia: Malting barley exports quadruple in January this year
|
Australia exported 73,647 tonnes of malting barley, 549,451 tonnes of feed barley and 25,517 tonnes of sorghum in January, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
While the malting figure is almost four times the 18,559 tonnes shipped in December, the feed barley and sorghum shipments were down 41 per cent from 938,295 tonnes and 62pc from 73,781 tonnes respectively shipped in December.
Vietnam was the biggest destination for January-shipped malting at 33,381 tonnes, and was followed closely by Mexico on 33,000 tonnes.
On feed barley, Saudi Arabia on 229,105 tonnes and Jordan on 126,000 tonnes were the biggest destinations by far, with the UAE on 57,829 tonnes in third place.
China on 23,330 tonnes accounted for 91pc of Australian sorghum exported in January.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said January’s barley exports were around 330,000t lower than the December total, and well below last year’s January-to-May average export pace.
“On the feed side, Middle East was unchanged month on month, while Asian demand dropped like a stone, down 350,000 tonnes to almost nothing.
“This switch was in line with our expectations…and was driven by importers favouring the freshly minted and relatively cheap Australian feed wheat production ex New South
