USA & Russia: Molson Coors halting exports to Russia
|
Molson Coors is halting exports to Russia, becoming the latest company to cut off sales in the country over its invasion of Ukraine, the Chicago Business reported on March 10.
The brewing giant, whose North American headquarters is based in Chicago, has ”limited sales and no physical assets in Russia,” CEO Gavin Hattersley said in a statement on March 9. Still, it is suspending exports of and licenses to produce any Molson Coors products in the country.
“Like so many of us around the world, I have watched with a heavy heart as the tragic events in Ukraine continue to threaten the lives of millions of innocent people,” Hattersley said in the statement. “The stories and images we have seen are unspeakable, and all of us at Molson Coors continue to stand together in support of Ukrainians and everyone affected by the humanitarian crisis this war has created.”
The Coors Light maker employs only a handful of people in Ukraine. Hattersley said Molson Coors is arranging for safe passage out of the country and providing accommodations and financial support to workers there, or workers who have friends and family there.
“Nothing is more important than the wellbeing of our people, and in the days

USA, VA: Three Notch’s Brewing Company acquires former Wild Wolf facility in Nellysford
|
Three Notch’s Brewing Company is growing again, CBS 19 News reported on March 10.
According to a release, it has acquired the former Wild Wolf facility in Nellysford, Nelson County.
The property includes 13 acres in an area known for beer and craft beverage tourism, which the company says will deepen its connection to its home state of Virginia.
The release says there will be investments made for renovations to the property, including a connection to public water treatment facilities.
This will provide the brewery with clean water coming from the Blue Ridge Mountains.
This facility will also be used to expand the brand with the official launch of the Three Notch’d Distilling Company.
Three Notch’d already operates five other venues across Virginia, including its production headquarters and brewpub in Charlottesville, brewpubs in Virginia Beach and Roanoke, and collab houses in Harrisonburg and Richmond.
The company hopes to open the new location by this fall and it will be looking to hire in the coming months.

USA, FL: Hoppy Brewing Co. aiming to open its doors in mid-April
|
Jacksonville’s newest craft brewery is aiming to open its doors in mid-April, replacing a closing brewery on Main Street after a brief hiatus, The Business Journals reported on March 10.
Historically Hoppy Brewing Co. will occupy the space that housed Main & Six Brewing Co., an award-winning brewery that officially shuts down after a last hurrah during this weekend’s St. Patrick’s Day Block Party in Springfield.
Owned by two couples — Ryan and Brianna McFarland and Aaron and Natalie Leedy — Historically Hoppy is the culmination of several years of dreaming, with the owners looking for buildings in and around downtown for almost a year.
When Main & Six announced in January that it was closing, the opportunity was clear. The Historically Hoppy owners all live in the Springfield neighborhood, with both Aaron Leedy and Ryan McFarland serving on the board of the Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council, a neighborhood advocacy group.
“We’re passionate about this neighborhood and passionate about the direction it’s heading,” Leedy said.
And the neighborhood has responded, McFarland said. “The amount of support that we’ve gotten from people in the neighborhood is insane,” he said.
The new brewery officially takes over the space March 14, with the owners in the process of

USA, OR: Fracture Brewing becomes Portland’s newest brewery
|
Vietnam native Ny Lee and her California born husband brewer Darren Provenzano took an unusual path to open Portland, Oregon’s newest brewery. Fracture Brewing assembles itself in the late lamented Burnside Brewing Co. production space with a soft launch of their initial lineup of beers this weekend at Loyal Legion beer hall. The brewery will open not one but two taprooms in Portland later this year, the New School Beer reported on March 9.
Darren and Ny met and married in Saigon while Darren while both were working at 7 Bridges Brewing. Ny was integral to Darren’s success as a brewer as she helped in recipe development, brewing calculations, and bridging the communication gap between cultures. She also became known for her incredible palate and honest feedback, her unbiased criticism keeping Darren humble and open to adjustments and improvements. Having grown up in the hospitality industry, Ny had become a beer drinker at an early age and was setup to be a keen critic of lager and pub culture. “Beer in Vietnam is the preferred social beverage. Before craft beer my personal taste was Tiger and Heineken but now I prefer craft Lagers,” says Ny.

Denmark & Russia: Carlsberg drops annual guidance, to stop selling its Carlsberg brand in Russia
|
Carlsberg stock traded 5% lower in Copenhagen on March 10 after the brewer dropped its annual guidance, owing to uncertainty in Russia, one of its largest markets, Bloomberg reported.
It said it will stop selling its flagship brand Carlsberg in the country while its Russian unit, Baltika Breweries, will be run as a separate business.
Russia and Ukraine accounted for around 13% of the Group’s revenue in 2021.
Carlsberg said the ongoing conflict between the two countries “will negatively impact the Group’s financial results for 2022” and warned there could be write-downs on assets while it undertakes a full review of its business in Russia.
The company said the markets outside Russia and Ukraine are currently witnessing a limited business impact but the indirect impact from rising commodity prices, including energy, will hurt the cost of goods and logistics.
Carlsberg has a huge presence in both Russia and Ukraine. With 8,300 employees, Baltika is one of the largest consumer goods companies in Russia and the market leader in beer with about 27% share, according to information available on the Carlsberg website.
Carlsberg joins rival Heineken and hundreds of other companies that have either quit or curtailed their operations in the Russian market. Heineken said

Russia: AB InBev to forfeit all financial benefit from JV in Russia
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV is the latest global brewer trying to withdraw from Russia after it asked a controlling partner that brews Budweiser to suspend sale and production in the country, Bloomberg reported on March 11.
The world’s largest brewer said in a statement it will forfeit “all financial benefit from the joint venture operations,” which it operates with Turkish brewer Anadolu Efes. Given Anadolu Efes controls the business, it’s unclear whether Budweiser beer will remain available in Russia.
European and U.S. companies are rushing to withdraw from the country or suspend operations after the invasion of Ukraine. Earlier this week, Heineken NV, Carlsberg A/S and Molson Coors Beverage Co. joined the growing ranks of global brands disappearing from Russia. Their moves have left Budweiser as one of the last major international beer brands in the market.
Anheuser-Busch said it’s providing financial assistance to 1,800 employees in Ukraine and their families, and that joint-venture employees in Russia and Ukraine will continue to be supported and paid.
Major brands in Russia made by Anheuser-Busch include Bud, Bud Alcohol Free, Spaten, Corona Extra, Velkopopovický Kozel and Hoegaarden.

Japan: Three of four major brewers log year-on-year falls in beer sales
|
Three of Japan’s four major brewers logged year-on-year falls in beer and quasi-beer sales in February, data from the companies have shown, the Jiji Press reported.
Sales of beer for restaurants and bars struggled as the number of novel coronavirus infection cases remained high. Tokyo and other prefectures have been under a state of COVID-19 pre-emergency.
“Due to the prolonged coronavirus pandemic, consumer behavior has changed,” such as refraining from holding drinking parties, a source familiar with the matter said.
Sales of so-called third-segment quasi-beer have been stagnant since a liquor tax hike for the product category in October 2020.
Meanwhile, sales of beer for households grew at some companies that introduced new products or renewed existing products, thanks to steady demand for drinking at home amid the pandemic.
By volume, sales fell 12% at Sapporo Breweries Ltd. and 11% at Kirin Brewery Co. while Suntory Beer Ltd. saw its sales drop slightly.
Asahi Breweries Ltd. enjoyed an 11% increase in sales by value.

The Netherlands & Russia: Heineken stops production and sale of its own brand beer in Russia
|
Heineken NV has stopped the production and sale of its own brand beer in Russia, joining a wave of companies to exit the country in response to the invasion of Ukraine, Bloomberg reported on March 9.
The move expands on previous steps by the Dutch brewer, which had already halted all new investments in Russia as well as exports of other brands. Production, advertising and sale of the Heineken brand there will immediately halt, the company said in a statement on March 9.
Shares rose as much as 4.3% in early trading.
Heineken joins a growing list of companies leaving the Russian market amid an intensifying backlash over President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine. Public pressure and boycotts of firms doing business in Russia has mounted in recent days as the war and humanitarian crisis have deepened.
“Heineken will no longer accept any net financial benefit derived from our Russian operations,” the company said. It added that it is now also assessing the strategic options for the future of the business in Russia where it has operated for two decades.
The company is also taking steps to ring-fence the Russian business from the wider group to “stop the flow of monies, royalties and

Nigeria: Guinness has no plans of leaving Nigeria - management
|
The management of Guinness Nigeria Plc has revealed that the company has no plans of leaving Nigeria, contrary to some inaccurate reports making rounds on some social media platforms, the Nairametrics reported on March 10.
This is coming at a time manufacturers are complaining of a tough operating environment amid the rising cost of goods and services and the energy crisis.
According to NAN, the clarification was made known by the Corporate Communications Manager, Guinness Nigeria Plc, Mrs Ayodele Alabi, during an interview on March 10 in Lagos.
While dismissing reports that Guinness wants to relocate its operations to Ghana, Alabi pointed out that its plant in Ghana had been in operation since 1960.
He said, “There is Guinness Ghana and it’s not that we are just trying to expand operations to Ghana or anything like that as it’s been there since forever, ten years after the Nigerian operations began.
“The information of our relocation is false and we cannot trace where the misinformation is coming from. We cannot just be moving our operations when we had established Ghana in 1960 while Nigeria office was established in 1950.’’
The Managing Director, Guinness Nigeria Plc, Mr Baker Magunda, in a statement, restated the company’s commitment to remaining

Australia: Two new barley varieties accredited as malting types
|
Two new barley varieties have passed the necessary evaluations and have successfully been accredited as malting types, the Farm Weekly reported on March 11.
Bottler and Kiwi were submitted by GrainSearch and Malteurop Australia respectively.
Both varieties were accredited as malting barley following the evaluation trials conducted in association with the Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC) assessment, under the Barley Australia malting barley evaluation process.
Bottler is a medium rainfall, mid-season maturity variety with high fermentability that is well suited to the export market.
It is suited to environments where RGT Planet and Westminster are grown.
Kiwi is a high rainfall variety and while it was submitted as a medium fermentability variety, its performance appears to be best suited to the high fermentability category and is therefore well suited to both domestic and export markets.
Kiwi is intended to be grown largely in Victoria in the same environments as Westminster and Fairview.
The Barley Australia malting barley evaluation and accreditation process is recognised as the required standard for the determination of malting barley for all new Australian malting barley varieties.
It will continue to assist market adoption of these newly-accredited varieties through its new program of post accreditation support, which is currently under development.
