Barley news North America: Tight malting barley situation remains problematic
The tight malting barley situation in Canada and the USA remains problematic, with crop 2022 harvest still over five months away, RMI Analytics reported earlier this month.

Now on top of the pre-existing situation the Black Sea disruption puts the next five months in a very precarious circumstances and increases the vital importance of Canada returning to normal barley production.

There is some positivity when looking at the early prospects for crop 2022, which the RMI analysts estimate at 10.2 mln tonnes - up from 6.8 mln tonnes in 2021. Imports of malting barley have been widely reported and more cargoes are expected in order to ensure 2022 malt supply.

There has been some moisture improvement over the past month which to a degree alleviates the dry conditions.

Competition from other crops makes it challenging for barley to retain planted area. The RMI Analytics’ crop 2022 estimate is based on a 4% decline in barley area (others at -7%). Farmer interest in contracting crop 2022 is very low at present.

Brewery news Canada, BC: Shaketown Brewing opens its doors in North Vancouver
The ever-growing brewery district in North Vancouver has welcomed its newest addition, with yesterday’s official opening of Shaketown Brewing, the Canadian Beer News reported on March 11.

Shaketown has been founded by long-time friends Ryan Scholz and Rohan Karnick, along with head brewer Dave Varga (previously at 33 Acres and Red Truck), and takes its name from the original name of the North Vancouver district of Lynn Valley. It’s further described as follows:

“Shaketown Brewing Co. honours the rich history of its past, stretching far beyond its own brewery walls. It takes pride in its name and values the town & community above all else. Shaketown is a celebration of North Vancouver, old and new. Real and, well, not so real. The alternative facts of the North Shore. Told by real people making real good beer. Shaketown is operating on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples: Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.”

While the Shaketown taproom and storefront is new, the name will be familiar to local beer drinkers due to the “Opening Act” series of beers that have been released over the past year via a contract brewing arrangement with Settlement Brewing.

Those four preview beers – Pre-Prohibition Lager (5% abv), Golden ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Pono Brewing to launch its own production facility and pub
After six years of contract brewing, Pono Brewing is finally getting its own production facility and pub, the Willamette Week reported on March 14.

The founders announced they would be opening the Pono Brewing Lab at 1728 NE 40th Ave., Portland, the former home of Columbia River Brewing. That business closed in 2019 after nine years of operations due to unspecified issues with the landlord. Before that, the building was Laurelwood’s original location.

Pono has inherited the 7-barrel copper-and-stainless steel system located in the basement of the Hollywood District brewery, which can be seen from the restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling windows. The business will use it to experiment with new hops, fruits and other ingredients while continuing to make most of its beer at Zoiglhaus Brewing in Lents. Pono also plans on starting a mixed-fermentation and barrel-aging program.

“We are thrilled to breathe new life into a historic part of Portland’s craft beer history,” says Erick Russ, Pono’s co-founder and sales manager, in a press release. “The Pono Brew Lab will be where we can finally flex our creativity.”

Beers in the works include single-hop IPAs, an extra-special bitter, a tomato basil gosa and a pandaan pastry stout.

Those familiar with the no-frills Columbia space can expect ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Franklin Brewing Co. signs lease for permanent location in Grafton
Franklin Brewing Co. signed a lease for a permanent location in Grafton, the village’s first brewery, Cleveland.com reported on March 11.

The brewery-brewpub will be located at 516 Main St., just north of downtown Grafton in a small retail-oriented strip plaza. Owner-brewer is Aaron Shickel.

The Lorain County space will include a production facility and is set to add three fermenters to its three-barrel system. It also will have a tap room.

Franklin (its name is derived from Benjamin Franklin) was established in 2013, but Shickel has been brewing on a limited basis in a pole-barn garage. The new space is in a former CrewsThru beverage store. The brewery will be located in the drive-through part of the location.

Target opening date is late May / early June.

Eight taps will pour beer, and Franklin also will offer wines and local guest beers. Darts, board games, sports on television and live acoustic music also will be available.

Investment opportunities are available via Honeycomb Credit. The brewery is aiming to use funds raised for renovations and new equipment.

Brewery news USA, MI: Third Life Brewing aiming at summer opening
Jamieson Hanna had a dream to open his own brewery. That dream may soon become a reality, the Manistee News Advocate reported on March 11.

Hanna, the former head brewer at North Channel Brewing Company is leasing a space at the Iron Works building at 254 River St. in Manistee. The brewery itself will be in the space that was previously occupied by Cafe 1907.

"About a month after I left my previous career employer, Ken Armour reached out to me and said 'hey, I've got a space ... do you want to come look at it?'" Hanna said.

He didn't think anything of it at the time — but after looking at the space he was sold, and signed the papers for the property.

Hanna said he is planning to open Third Life Brewing this summer.

He received some equipment for the brewery this week, which was purchased from Seven Saws Brewing Company in Massachusetts. The brewers drove from Holden, Massachusetts to deliver the equipment to Hanna.

Brewers Paul Mulroy and Troy Milliken helped Hanna lift some of the heavy equipment, along with Wes Smit and Dave Lindenau who work with Hanna. Milliken and Mulroy joked that they now have a permanent presence with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: ESP Brewing Co. hopes for a soft opening for St. Patrick’s Day
A chemist whose passion is turning hops into liquid gold, Larry Esper Jr. had big dreams in January 2020 of building a brewery, the Chronicle Telegram reported on March 12.

But the COVID-19 crisis was lurking just around the corner. Just like everyone else, Esper found his plans suddenly on hold.

“COVID really slowed us down. I thought everything was going to go real smooth and quick, and then everything was delayed,” he said. “We got locked down, and one delay led to another.”

After a long two years riddled with supply chain headaches, the Lorain native and business partner Jim Oesterman of Wellington were found on Thursday, March 10 sweeping floors and moving stools into place in front of the bar at ESP Brewing Co.

If all goes well, they’ll do a soft opening for St. Patrick’s Day, with doors thrown wide open by the end of March.

“It took way longer than we thought it would take,” Oesterman said. “But it’s been a lot of fun.”

Located at 8055 South Leavitt Road, next to the Lorain County Visitors Bureau in Amherst, the 4,000-square-foot brewhouse is designed to let customers see the beer-making process in action.

Esper uses a five-barrel system, capable of making batches of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Lost Saint Brewery delays opening in Blue Earth
Ever since a sign was painted on the south wall of the Three Sisters buildings in downtown Blue Earth, and another sign was hung up in the window of the north Sisters building, Mike Lahti has been getting questioned a lot, the Faribault County Register reported on March 13.

The signs announce the Sisters as the home of the new Lost Saint Brewery. The question Lahti keeps hearing is, “When is it going to open so I can get a beer?”

He said last week he wishes he had a good answer to that question.

“I had hoped to be open this month or next, but there have been a lot of delays, in construction, licensing and other things,” Lahti says. “Let’s just say I also want it open just as soon as it can be.”

Lahti says he has explored a few other options, but he really feels the north and middle buildings of the Three Sisters, right in the heart of downtown Blue Earth, are the perfect place for his new brewery.

Why a brewery in Blue Earth? Lahti says he would not have it anywhere else.

He moved to Blue Earth in 1975 with his family, and is a 1989 Blue Earth Area ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Heineken’s operations significantly affected by Covid-19
Alexander Koch, Heineken Vietnam's Managing Director, admitted that the Covid-19 pandemic has significantly affected the company's operations as well as its contribution to the state budget, The Leader reported on March 15.

Since 1991, Heineken Vietnam has been operating continuously in the Vietnam market and making significant contributions to the state budget (equivalent to nearly one per cent of GDP) and creating jobs both directly and indirectly for 212,000 employees.

However, the Covid-19 pandemic has significantly affected the company's operations as well as its contribution to the state budget, according to Alexander Koch, Heineken Vietnam Managing Director in a meeting with Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien.

In 2020, coupled with the natural disasters in central Vietnam, the company’s GDP contribution in Vietnam decreased slightly from $876 million in the previous year to $744.6 million, with 0.87 per cent GDP contributed and 183,000 jobs supported in the whole value chain.

The rising input cost of materials puts pressure on the company to optimize its operating costs and find ways to operate sustainably.

“Despite testing circumstances, we built on our ability to adapt and stay close to our customers and consumers, while keeping our eyes on investing for the future,” says Heineken Vietnam in ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Kirin to invest ¥100 billion in pharmaceuticals as shift away from brewing
Beer giant Kirin is set to invest ¥100 billion (£667 million) in pharmaceuticals over the next three years as part of the company’s shift away from brewing, led by the shrinking beer market in Japan, The Drinks Business reported on March 14.

Yoshinori Isozaki, chief executive, told the Financial Times in an interview: “If the beer segment would grow forever, it would’ve been better for us to focus on it, because making a challenge in a new business is very tough.”

Kirin Holdings Co. announced last month that it would be selling its stake in a beverage venture it formed with China Resources Holdings Co. for ¥115 billion (just shy of US$1 billion) as it shifts its focus to food, health and pharmaceuticals.

The Japanese brewer was set to gain around ¥39 billion from the sale of its 40% stake to Plateau Consumer Ltd., an investment fund based in the Cayman Islands, it was announced.

The company now hopes to use the technology of the beer-making process in its biotech ventures.

“We want to turn Kirin into a fermentation biotechnology company. We need to grow a new business while the beer segment is still healthy,” Isozaki told the FT.

Kirin unveiled a three-year business plan last ...More info on site

Brewery news Cambodia: Stone Head nearing its inaugural brew in Phnom Penh
A world award-winning craft beer name is nearing its inaugural brew in Phnom Penh after the recent relocation of its entire operation from Koh Kong province to the capital, opening up a brewery and taproom in the Sen Sok neighbourhood of Chhuk Meas with guided tours and special events to be held alongside its production, the Khmer Times reported on March 14.

The story of how this brewery has landed in the city from its first brewing in 2015 at the company’s previous location in Koh Kong takes us to its origins and Thailand’s unusual laws prohibiting the brewing of beer in small quantities — volumes typical for a craft beer producer. It’s also about the ‘stubborn’ drive and talent of the brand’s unconventional and artistic founders Dusadee Thummarat and Ladapa Nualin, better known as Ford and Nim, as well as their close-knit team, who gave Khmer Times a tour of the brewery.

The name Stone Head itself is a translation from the Thai “Hua Khang” to label someone stubborn, which Ford and Nim are proud of, inspiring them to overcome the odds and seek refuge in Cambodia for their craft beer operation.

For brewers to open a business in Thailand, they must ...More info on site

Brewery news Africa: Heineken to cede 35% stake in regional alcohol distribution business to Distell Group shareholders
Dutch brewer Heineken will cede a 35 percent stake in its regional alcohol distribution business including Kenya to shareholders of Distell Group as part of its acquisition of the South Africa-based firm, the Business Day reported on March 11.

The Heineken distribution businesses in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, and South Sudan are valued at R885.5 million (Sh6.6 billion) and will be transferred to a South African subsidiary called Sunside Acquisitions Limited that will be jointly owned by Heineken and Distell.

Heineken, which currently fully owns the regional alcohol distribution businesses, will end up with a diluted but a controlling 65 percent stake in Sunside while Distell will hold the remaining 35 percent.

As part of the transactions, Distell will also bring its interests in its subsidiaries including Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (Kwal) to Sunside.

The parties say the ongoing transaction will result in a stronger operation that will grow and compete more effectively against rivals such as Diageo.

“The transaction will create a world-class, southern-African-focused, alcoholic beverages entity (Newco) with a leading beer and cider portfolio, combining the complementary brands, talent, and skills of Distell, Heineken, and NBL, to better serve consumers across the region,” Distell said.

“Newco will also have a significant presence in adjacent African ...More info on site
