Brewery news USA, CO: Denver Beer Co. announces plans for a massive fourth location in Denver
Beer drinkers in east Denver will soon be able to visit Denver Beer Co. without traversing the city.

The brewery announced plans for a massive fourth location Tuesday, March 15 in the Lowry Field neighborhood, which will include an onsite restaurant, brewhouse and outdoor beer garden that borders a neighboring park. Denver Beer Co. anticipates breaking ground next month and opening by the end of the year.

DBC opened its original location on Platte Street in 2011 and has been growing rapidly due to “the fact that we’re building communities and people are loving our beers and our experiences,” co-founder Charlie Berger said. In 2020, the brewery produced more than 25,000 barrels of beer, up 301% compared to 2016, according to the Brewers Association.

That growth inspired the company to expand to locations on South Downing Street in Denver, in Olde Town Arvada and now Lowry Field.

Berger said Denver Beer Co. is building its newest facility, at 7070 E. Lowry Blvd., from the ground up at the Exchange at Boulevard One development. There will be a 4,200-square-foot taproom complete with a restaurant and brewery, plus a 5,400-square-foot patio. In all, it will be able to accommodate 485 people.

The seven-barrel brewhouse will create recipes ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: BabyCat Brewery to open as Kensington’s first brewery this year
Kensington’s first brewery is expected to open this year, according to its owners, the Bethesda Magazine reported on March 17.

BabyCat Brewery, the brainchild of Sam Mussomeli and Terry Redmond, will be at 10241 Kensington Parkway, and will offer beer, wine and hard seltzers. It will have both an indoor taproom and outdoor green space, according to the owners.

BabyCat’s founders were scheduled to appear before Montgomery County’s liquor board on Thursday. They hope to open by November if construction occurs on time.

Redmond and Mussomeli came up with the idea for the brewery near the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Redmond said in an interview on Wednesday.

Redmond hired Mussomeli to work at his surgical distribution company a few years back. Mussomeli, already a home brewer at that point, was fine-tuning his craft, Redmond said.

“His beer just got exceptionally good. He started winning local and regional awards,” he said.

Redmond said he brought Mussomeli’s homemade beers to parties, and it wasn’t well-received at first. But it got better over time.

“Then, I started bringing it to parties, and people were like, ‘Oh, my God. That is so good,’” he said.

Eighteen months ago, Mussomeli and Redmond started talking about creating a brewery. Both were spending much ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Goodwood Brewing & Spirits opens its largest location yet in Columbus
Louisville's largest brewery, Goodwood Brewing & Spirits, has opened its largest location yet in Columbus. The brewpub is now open in the Arena District, bringing a bit of Kentucky to the Buckeye state, The Columbus Dispatch reported on March 16.

At 401 N. Front St., Goodwood has taken over the former home of Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant, which closed two years ago following the bankruptcy of its corporate parent.

The location is 13,400 square feet indoors and 900 square feet outdoors and came ready with furnishings and beer equipment. Goodwood added its own equipment, amenities and flair, including an upgraded audio system, shuffleboard and occasional live music. A full kitchen with a built-in pizza oven and brewery is onsite. The space also features two event rooms.

The menu is wide-ranging, with many Southern-inspired dishes and "Goodwood originals."

Starters include fried green tomatoes ($13), the Goodwood "totchos" ($16 with brisket or pork, $17 with bourbon barrel stout chili), Bavarian pretzel ($13), and wings ($13 to $26).

Also featured are salads, burgers, sandwiches (brisket grilled cheese, anyone?) and other entrees, many of which are beer or bourbon-infused.

That includes shrimp and grits ($25), the bourbon-brined pork chop ($23), blackened catfish ($18), and chicken and waffles ($18). Don't glaze ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev test-marketing new Budweiser Supreme beer in select locations
AB InBev just released a new traditional lager called Budweiser Supreme, according to the company's Twitter feed. The world's most famous beer company is dubbing this latest addition to their lineup as the "new generation of American golden lager," and "An American Classic, Reimagined"—positioning it as a compelling alternative to their flagship Budweiser, eatthis.com reported on March 16.

Currently, Budweiser Supreme is being test-marketed in select locations in New York, California, Texas, Ohio, and Washington D.C., according to local reports, before it's taken nationwide. One early review on Beer Advocate claims it tastes "Not much different than the standard bud, slightly sweeter and better tasting."

The big difference between Budweiser and Budweiser Supreme appears to be the type of malt used. Budweiser, according to the Anheuser-Busch site, is brewed with "two-row and six-row barley malt, hand-selected from regional growers all across America." Supreme, on the other hand, is triple filtered and features "American honey malt."

So the question is: Will this new brew replace Budweiser in popularity? Only time will tell, considering the original Budweiser has been brewed since 1876 and has spent the past 145 years as one of the most popular beers in the U.S. In recent years though, Bud Light ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Tin Whiskers Brewery closing its doors after eight years in business
A St. Paul brewery is closing its doors after eight years, KSTP.com reported on March 18.

In an announcement on social media, Tin Whiskers Brewery stated the business “is no longer sustainable to keep going.”

“We would not have made it this far without the support from all of you. Thank you for that,” the post goes on to state. “Thank you for the opportunity to make some beers and share some memories.”

The brewery is expected to remain open until the end of May.

To mark its final days, the brewery is creating a So Long, Goodbye hazy IPA.

Whisky news Japan, China & Australia: Kirin to start exporting whisky to China and Australia next month
Kirin will begin exporting whisky distilled in Japan to China and Australia in April, hoping to cash in on the spirit's rising popularity in Asia, the Nikkei Asia reported on March 17.

The Japanese drinks maker, which faces an aging, shrinking population at home, will serve up its Fuji whisky in the Asian market, its first significant foray abroad since it launched in U.S. the last year and in France in 2020.

Fuji, which will be priced at around 680 yuan ($107) in China and 149 Australian dollars ($108) per 700 ml bottle, is a single-grain whisky.

The distiller has set a global sales target of 1.2 billion yen ($10.5 million) this year, up 202% from 2021. Kirin hopes to generate 50% of its whisky sales from foreign markets by 2025.

Kirin Brewery, a subsidiary of Kirin Holdings, makes Fuji whisky at its distillery in Gotemba, at the base of Mount Fuji. Kirin said Fuji is characterized by its fruity, orange and grape flavors.

Japanese whisky is increasingly popular overseas, with some exclusive batches fetching eye-watering prices. A single bottle of 50-year-old Yamazaki, made by Kirin's rival Suntory, sold at auction for more than $300,000 in 2018. In January 2020, Suntory announced a lottery for ...More info on site
