USA: Craft brewers bracing for higher barley prices
|
As the Russia-Ukraine war continues, some craft breweries are bracing for higher barley prices, Quartz reported on March 22.
Brooklyn Brewery’s CEO Eric Ottaway said the price of a six-pack increased by 50 cents to a dollar over the past year, and prices will go up by a “similar amount again before the end of the year.” The craft brewer, which sells lagers, porters, IPAs, and other beers in more than 30 countries, said it raised prices by 5% to 6% in February.
Russia and Ukraine produce 13% and 5% of the world’s barley, respectively, according to a report from Rabobank, a Dutch financial services company. Together, the two countries account for 30% of global exports, with most of the grain used for feed. Most US-based microbreweries don’t source their barley directly from Ukraine, but the grain market is global, said Ottaway. So a shortage in one area affects prices everywhere, he said.
The craft beer industry has grown rapidly over the past two decades during which thousands of new, independent breweries and brewpubs have opened—to date there are close to 9,000 in the US.

Ethiopia: BGI planning to keep and rejuvenate Meta beer brand
|
BGI reveals plans to channel its expertise and experience to keep and rejuvenate the brand Meta and rekindle the passion of the staff at Meta Brewery, according to the source who preferred to remain anonymous, The New Business Ethiopia reported on March 20.
The comment came after some community members in Sebeta area in Oromia region expressed their fear that BGI Ethiopia may abandon Meta brand after concluding the acquisition of the brewery.
The source said “BGI knows how to smoothly integrate a company to itself, keeping an eye to the interests of key stakeholders, ensuring that the concerns of all key stakeholders are attended to.”
In particular, Meta’s employees and the community in Sebeta will continue to enjoy all existing benefits; while they should also expect reasonably significant improvements, according to a source at BGI Ethiopia.
“This is well in line with BGI’s well-reputed CSR activities that have reached out to communities elsewhere around its breweries and beyond,” the source said.
“BGI’s purchase brings good tidings to the brand Meta, to employees and distributors as well as to the larger Sebeta community. The purchase opens new doors to the brand, employees and the Sebeta community.”

Spain: Heineken could halt distribution if truck drivers’ protest continues
|
Dutch brewer Heineken NV said on March 22 it could halt distribution in Spain if a week-long truck drivers’ protest continues, AJOT.com reported.
Heineken will be “unable to serve its products to commercial surfaces, bars and restaurants and to stock up on raw materials, due to the violent protests that prevent the normal operations of the company,” it said in a statement.
Heineken produces and distributes several alcoholic beverages in Spain, including the popular Cruzcampo beer brand.
Spanish brewer Mahou San Miguel is also having difficulties carrying out its operations in the southern European country, Europa Press reported, citing unnamed company officials.
Several Spanish truckers’ unions began an indefinite strike on March 14 over soaring fuel prices and poor working conditions, disrupting supply chains across a range of sectors. The Spanish government on Monday, March 21 pledged to provide 500 million euros ($549 million) in direct aid to help lower fuel costs for truck drivers.
Danone SA warned on March 22 that it will have to temporarily halt operations in Spain within 24 hours if the protests continue. Inditex SA, the world’s largest clothing retailer, said on the website of its Zara brand that some deliveries in Spain may be delayed.

Costa Rica: Owners of bars and restaurants fear an increase in beer prices
|
Costa Rica’s owners of bars and restaurants predict an increase in the price of beers and “bocas” (snacks), due to the recent rise in the cost of raw materials, QCOSTARICA reported on March 21.
Due to the crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, increases have been announced in the price of fuel, electricity, pork and chicken, rice, oil, beans, pasta, eggs, wheat and many other products.
José Francisco Quesada, President of the Asociación Costarricense de Bares y Restaurantes (ASOBAREST) – Costa Rican Association of Bars and Restaurants, said that businesses premises already are feeling the increase in costs.
Quesada stated that increases are passed on to the consumers.
Year-on-year inflation in Costa Rica increased 4.90%, being the second highest variation in the last 10 years.
Added to the situation due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine are the increases in the cost of maritime freight, the dollar exchange rate and the increase in the international price of oil.

Uganda: Tax revenue from alcohol drops in February
|
Administrative challenges in effective implementation of the digital tax tracking system coupled with lower than anticipated consumption of alcoholic drinks such as beer, spirits, wines and non-beer beverages affected tax collection during February, according to Uganda’s Ministry of Finance Performance of the Economy report, the Monitor reported on March 23.
In details contained in the February report, the Ministry of Finance noted that tax collections were lower than targets due to shortfalls in Excise Duty and Value Added Tax (VAT) resulting from challenges in proper implementation of some digital tracking systems and difficulties encountered in the roll out of the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System.
“Indirect domestic tax collections were affected by underperformance by Excise Duty and VAT. Excise Duty collections were affected by administrative challenges in effective implementation of the digital tracking system coupled with lower than anticipated consumption of items such as beer, spirits, wines and near beer beverages. Similarly, collections for VAT were affected by roll out difficulties of the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System,” the report said, noting that during February tax collection shortfalls stood at Shs86.06b.

Ukraine: Spring crop sowing area may more than halve this year – Agriculture Minister
|
Ukraine's spring crop sowing area may more than halve this year from 2021 levels to some 7 million hectares, its Agriculture Minister Roman Leshchenko said on March 22, versus 15 million hectares expected before the Russian invasion, Reuters reported.
Ukraine is a major global agriculture producer and exporter, and the hostilities may sharply reduce the 2022 harvest and exports in the forthcoming 2022/23 season.
Its spring crop sowing forecast covers grains such as barley and corn, as well as other crops such as sugar beet, sunflowers and soybeans.
"The adjusted plan currently stands at 7 million hectares. We have actually corrected (the initial plan) by half. There will be less corn," Leshchenko told Reuters.
"We have large stocks of corn, and how to export it later is a very difficult question."
He said farmers could sow up to 3.3 million hectares of corn this year versus 5.4 million hectares in 2021.
Leshchenko said the ministry had urged farmers to sow more spring wheat, buckwheat, oats, millet and spring barley. He gave no forecast for the sown area of those specific crops, but said overly dry weather could affect the sowing.
"Today, the issue of food security is at the forefront," the minister said.

USA: US hops inventory up 6% in March 2022
|
The inventory of hops held by US growers, dealers, and brewers on March 1, 2022 totaled 196 million pounds, up 6 percent from March 1, 2021 stocks inventory of 185 million pounds, USDA reported on March 16.
Stocks held at dealer and grower locations on March 1, 2022 totaled 160 million pounds. Stocks held by brewers totaled 36.0 million pounds.
Grower surveys are conducted in the three estimating States (Idaho, Oregon, and Washington) to collect stocks of hops held by growers. Additionally, contacts are made to collect stocks held by brewers and dealers.
