Brewery news USA, TX: New brewery Stay Put opening in downtown Austin this year
A new brewery is opening in downtown Austin this year, courtesy of bar hospitality group Pouring With Heart. The Stay Put will be found at 73 Rainey Street (the former G’Raj Mahal restaurant space) starting sometime in the summer of 2022, the Eater Austin reported on March 23.

The brewery will brew its own beers, focusing on what a rep describes as “crisp and clean, easy drinkers.” Draft cocktails are also on tap. The space will include indoor and outdoor areas with two bars.

Overseeing the project is Pouring With Heart’s operations director Steven Robbins and general manager Amanda Carto, who had been the general manager for Nickel City, and had bartended at the company’s other nearby bar Half Step for a bit.

The company decided to open a brewery on Rainey Street since the area “has always had a special place in our heart because we have a deep love of maintaining the historic character of neighborhoods and spaces,” according to the head of development Peter Stanislaus through a rep. “It’s an honor to be in this space, and we’re excited to continue to preserve a little bit of what made us fall in love with Austin.”

Indian restaurant G’Raj Mahal was the ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: HUBco Brewing now open in Mission
A new brewery focused on brewing “clean crisp lagers and American hop-forward ales” is now open in Mission, BC, the Canadian Beer News reported.

HUBco Brewing has been founded by Kylan and Jenna St. Jean, and officially opened its doors in late February in a spot that was previously home to a karate dojo. The two-floor space has capacity for 100 people, and features a 13-barrel brewhouse.

The opening beer line-up included Cashmere Lager (4.7% abv), Citra Pale Ale (5.7% abv), and Dark Chocolate Porter (5.3% abv), plus a guest tap from Ravens Brewing, and several wine, cider, and alcohol-free options.

The food menu is snack-focused, with items including gourmet hot dogs, pretzels, falafel, and a few choices for “kiddos”.

HUBco Brewing is located at 33211 North Railway Ave. in Mission, and is open daily with the exception of Mondays.

Brewery news USA, CO: Pug Ryan’s Brewery changes ownership
John and Judy Jordan are no longer the owners of Pug Ryan’s Brewery in Dillon. The couple bought the brewpub from Travis and Annie Holton in 2017 and closed on the sale March 10, the Summit Daily reported on March 24.

Like the Holtons, the Jordans wanted to step away from the business yet keep it thriving in the right hands. John Jordan said it took a beating during the coronavirus pandemic, but he credits staff and regulars for keeping it alive. John Jordan said Pug Ryan’s is now doing better than they thought it would by the fifth year.

The new owner is Chris Locke. He saw the listing in July 2021 from the same business broker who helped him sell his glass company a year prior. Locke was essentially retired but found himself restless and wanted to do something beyond golfing and fishing. He told himself he wasn’t going to go back to work. Yet the listing stayed with him, and he realized it would be a good move.

Now a resident of Silverthorne, Locke lived in Louisville for 24 years. He wasn’t hugely familiar with Summit County — only passing through on the way to Craig for hunting trips — ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NM: Second Street Brewery to close its original location
After 25 years in its flagship building on its namesake street, Second Street Brewery has announced it will close its original location in Santa Fe, the Santa Fe Reporter reported on March 23.

“We had a 20-year lease on the building at the original location, and it expires at the end of June,” founder Rod Tweet tells SFR. “That means no lease exits and we had to negotiate a new one, and we’ve been unable to negotiate a new one I’m comfortable signing.”

Tweet says he believes the majority of employees currently working at the location will be absorbed by the company’s other two restaurants on Rufina Street and in the Railyard. As for the brewing operation, which produces many of the company’s more varietal beers, Tweet says a new location is in the works.

“I’m pretty close to having a good spot for that,” Tweet notes.

The announcement comes at a time during which the very shape of the restaurant industry is in constant flux. The COVID-19 pandemic brought ramifications that are still playing out, and though Tweet describes the upcoming loss as “agonizing,” the decision ultimately came down to doing what’s best to keep Second Street viable.

”We’re 100% solid as a company—financially ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Focal Brewing launches in Hastings with an aim to source many ingredients locally
A new brewery with an aim to source many of its ingredients locally is now open in Hastings, a village approximately 40 km east of Peterborough in Ontario’s Northumberland County, the Canadian Beer News reported.

Focal Brewing has been founded by friends and veteran homebrewers Matt Filion and Brandon Bickle, and is located in a converted pole barn on a property owned by Bickle and his wife.

Focal opened its doors this past weekend, and has launched with four core brands – Welcome to Ontario Pale Ale (5.5% abv), Fieldcrest Blonde Ale (5% abv), Pole Barn IPA (6% abv), and Faster Than Trouble Session IPA (4.5% abv) – plus a Coffee Chocolate Porter as the first in the rotating Explorer Series of seasonal beers. The label for each beer indicates the percentage of local ingredients used in its production.

The business is currently limited to retail sales of cans to go and small tasting samples in the taproom, but full by-the-glass service will follow soon, with plans to add an outdoor seating area this summer in a hopyard that Bickle is planting on the property.

Focal Brewing is located at 98 County Rd 35 just outside of Hastings, and will be open from Thursday ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Railway City Brewing sales to EARI Beverage Group not moving forward
Railway City Brewing has announced that negotiations with EARI Beverage Group for acquisition of the brewery that started earlier this year have “failed to reach a satisfactory conclusion and the Letter of Intent between the two companies is no longer in effect”, the Canadian Beer News reported on March 16.

In a press release, John Peart, President of Railway City, says that while “the Letter of Intent has expired without a mutual agreement, Railway City will continue doing what we do best – serving our customers, employees, community and our investors.”

The statement further notes that operations at the brewery in St. Thomas have not been affected by this outcome, and will continue normally going forward.

Brewery news Ireland: Guinness most valuable Irish brand in the world
Guinness has recaptured the number one place on the ranking of the most valuable Irish brands in the world, according to a new report by that brand valuation consultancy Brand Finance.

Every year, Brand Finance puts 5,000 of the biggest brands to the test publishing nearly 100 reports that rank brands across all sectors and countries, including Ireland.

Guinness came in on top, following an increase in sales as lockdowns ended. Since last year's report, the Guinness brand value has grown a whopping 3.6 per cent to €2.2 billion according to calculations by Brand Finance, due in part to the reopening of pubs.

Simon Haigh, Agent for Brand Finance Ireland, said, “Some Guinness customers see drinking Guinness as an important part of their lifestyle. This is a testament to the extraordinary brand strength that Guinness has built.

“Such strength reflects their skill in navigating the challenges of Covid-19, the challenges of serving a changing customer base, and doing all this while honouring the brand legacy that they have built since 1759.

The Guinness brand is in an excellent position as people get back to gathering, celebrating, and drinking,” he added.

Brewery news South Africa: South African Breweries plans expansion and upgrades of its Prospecton and Ibhayi plants
South African Breweries (SAB) announced a further investment of R920 million into the local economy on March 24, with the money earmarked for expansion and upgrades to its Prospecton and Ibhayi plants, located in Durban and Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, Moneyweb reported.

Revealing the new investment during the 4th SA Investment Conference in Sandton, SAB CEO Richard Rivett-Carnac said this further announcement effectively ramps up SAB’s total investment commitment in the country to R4.5 billion.

The investment by SAB, which is controlled by JSE-listed global alcohol giant Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV, comes despite the impact of Covid-19 lockdowns and related liquor bans that have seen the industry lose billions of rand in sales over the last two years.

It also comes in spite of the July riots, with SAB’s premises at Prospecton and Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal being also targeted last year.

“These investments will give us the capacity to not only contribute to the economy but also to be able to contribute to job creation, tax, excise and procurement spend,” said Rivett-Carnac.

According to SAB, its Prospecton Brewery in Durban will receive the bulk of this new investment with a total of R650 million that will help expand facilities there.

“This investment alone will provide a ...More info on site
