Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands to repurchase $500 mln of its own stock
Constellation Brands, Inc., a leading beverage alcohol company, announced on April 7 that it has entered into an accelerated share repurchase (“ASR”) agreement with Bank of America, N.A. to repurchase $500.0 million of its Class A common stock (“Common Stock”).

Under the ASR agreement, Constellation will receive approximately 1.7 million shares on April 8, 2022, representing approximately 80% of the expected share repurchases under the ASR agreement, based on the company’s April 6, 2022 closing stock price of $231.81. The repurchased shares will become treasury shares.

The specific number of shares to be repurchased in the transaction is generally based upon the volume-weighted-average price of the Common Stock during the term of the ASR agreement, less a discount and is expected to be completed no later than May 2022. The purchase price for shares repurchased in the accelerated share repurchase transaction will be paid primarily with cash on hand and will be completed under the company’s current share repurchase authorization, which currently has approximately $2.6 billion in authorization remaining before giving effect to the ASR.

This ASR agreement will not change the fiscal 2023 EPS guidance provided in our news release of earlier today and constitutes the $500 million share repurchase referenced ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Government scraps excise duties on non-alcoholic beer
Beer Canada welcomes the elimination of all federal alcohol excise duties on non-alcoholic beer announced in the federal Budget on April 7.

Budget 2022 includes an amendment to Canada's Excise Act removing alcohol excise taxes on beer containing no more than 0.5% alcohol by volume. The duty-free treatment for non-alcoholic beer is consistent with how non-alcoholic wines and spirits are already treated in Canada and how Canada's major trading partners treat non-alcoholic beer.

"We are pleased that the Government of Canada has removed this unintended barrier to the development and introduction of quality Canadian non-alcoholic beers," stated CJ Hélie, President of Beer Canada.

Non-alcoholic beer represents a small but growing segment of the global beer market with double-digit annual growth expected as consumers seek greater variety and styles of beer including those containing a broader range of alcohol content.

Low and no alcohol beers are an increasingly popular choice for adult consumers on those occasions when they are looking for the great taste of beer, but without the alcohol.

"The elimination of alcohol excise duties on non-alcoholic beer is a good first step, and we look forward to continuing to work with Minister Freeland to modernize Canada's alcohol excise duty structure and implement further ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Waterloo Brewing posts 29% growth in net revenue for 2021
Waterloo Brewing Ltd. ("Waterloo Brewing" or the "Company"), Ontario's largest Canadian-owned brewery, has released results for the fourth quarter and full-year ended January 31, 2022. Waterloo Brewing posted a record annual EBITDA of C$21.0 million on net revenue of C$111.8 million, which represents growth of 38% and 29% respectively, Yahoo Finance reported on April 7.

"We are very proud of these results," said George Croft, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Waterloo Brewing. "Despite challenges across the industry such as supply chain disruptions, inflationary cost pressures and overall beer category softness, Waterloo Brewing continues to grow aggressively."

Waterloo Brewing was a top performer in an industry that experienced an overall volume decline of 3.2%. Nonetheless, Waterloo Brewing was able to attract and retain co-manufacturing partners and deliver strong results. Versus the prior year, co- manufacturing volume grew by 73% and overall owner brands volume remained flat. The Company's current record of performance is unique in the industry and is a testament to the Company's ability to capitalize on opportunities and maximize the potential for growth.

"Co-manufacturing is an essential part of our business," said Croft. "We are grateful for our partners and look forward to another successful year where we produce really innovative ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Fate Brewing Co. planning its first Phoenix location
Scottsdale-based Fate Brewing Co. is planning a new location, its first in the city of Phoenix, which will be part of an adaptive reuse project of an existing building, ABC15 Arizona reported on April 5.

The move comes several months after the company quietly shuttered its original Valley location in a small strip center on Shea Boulevard just east of North Scottsdale Boulevard.

The new Phoenix location is a former medical office building at 4445 N. 7th St. in central Phoenix.

“We love the area for the traffic, and some new things going on over there,” Steve Ellefson, general manager of Fate Brewing, said. He noted that the area is more competitive with a larger volume of other restaurants nearby than at Fate’s other locations.

The architecture for the adaptive reuse is being done by Aline Architecture, which has worked with Fate on other projects over the years. Brian Krob, principal at Aline Architecture, said the new location will have an indoor/outdoor element, with skylights and plans to have some of the walls open to a patio space.

Brewery news USA, MN: Heavy Rotation Brewing Co. to celebrate opening on Friday, April 8
Come Friday, April 8, the city of Brooklyn Park can celebrate a new brewery and taproom. Called Heavy Rotation Brewing Co., it’s the only one of its kind in the city, CCX Media reported.

The new brewery will be located in the Stone Mountain Plaza retail building, northeast of Highways 169 and 610.

“We came here and fell in love with this place. The neighborhood. Everything about it,” said Ken Smith, one of the co-owners.

Smith’s uncle, Scott Smith, and Josh Denny, the head brewer, are the other owners. Their idea for a brewery started to build two years ago.

“We would have been open a little while ago, we’ve had supply-chain issues like everybody has had,” said Smith.

But the brewery and taproom came together quicker than most expected.

“Talked to the industry people, a lot of them we’re like ‘oh, it’s going to take you a year, year and a half, whatever, to open.’ So, we broke ground mid-November, opening in April. They’re kind of like, ‘wow.’ that’s kind of crazy,'” explained Smith.

Heavy Rotation will start with a selection of eight beers on tap. Their selection will change frequently, hence the name.

“There’s a lot of creativity involved in it,” explained Denny. “There’s so many ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Common Language Brewing Co. opens in downtown Spokane
A new brewery has opened in the former Spokane Daily Chronicle newspaper pressroom in downtown Spokane, The Spokesman-Review reported on April 6.

Sean Owens – a former veterinarian and retired professor from the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine – and five business partners opened Common Language Brewing Co. this week at 926 W. Sprague Ave., Suite 101.

“The Spokane community has been unbelievably welcoming,” Owens said. “We’ve met lots of folks here that love craft beer. It’s very nice to be in the arts and entertainment district, and we are hoping to have a long tenure here in town making great beer for people.”

Common Language Brewing Co. features six taps with its signature hard seltzer, Irish stout, brown ale and India pale ale brewed with locally sourced grains, hops and fruits. It also has six rotating guest taps with beers, ciders and wines.

The brewery also serves wine by the glass and tea, Owens said.

“We want everyone to have something to drink and enjoy, and be able to sit, hang out and make new friends,” he said.

Since opening this week, the brewery’s Irish stout has been a top seller, Owens said.

“Spokane loves stouts,” he said. “That was a wonderful surprise ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: For Tomorrow We Die Brewing ready to fully open in Salem
The newest addition to Salem's brewery scene, For Tomorrow We Die Brewing, has been shrouded in mystery, until now, the Statesman Journal reported on April 7.

Since its soft opening in November, FTWD Brewing has remained largely vague online – no info on their social media pages, review site pages or Google business page until earlier this year. But with almost everything in place, Christopher "Toph" Holland is ready for people to enjoy the labor of his newest venture.

The space of the former Salem Ale Works has been transformed into a cool and natural brewpub, with plants and customized touches across the space, from booths with actual trunks refurbished into tables plus the addition of pinball machines and high top tables with unique wood tabletops. Though much of the space has not changed, the addition of a giant mural of the brewery's name and one of a griffon on the wall are prominent signals this is a turn away from former tenant Salem Ale Works and is a concept not seen anywhere else in Salem.

The vision for this theme came to Holland in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic. Inspired by the philosopher Epicurious and the volatility of life at ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, SK: Great Western Brewing Company planning C$40 mln expansion in Saskatoon
The CEO of Great Western Brewing Company is hoping an ambitious new project will pay off for the long-standing Saskatoon-based beer maker, CBC reported on April 8.

Last week, Saskatoon city council unanimously approved a change in zoning that allowed Great Western to expand its brewery on Second Avenue.

The approval now means that the brewery will begin a multi-year process to modernize and expand production. In total, Great Western plans to spend just under C$40 million on the project.

"We're certainly hoping to grow," said company CEO and president Michael Brennan.

"We believe that having more modern equipment will give us opportunities to produce more beer and sell it in more places."

The money will be spent on constructing a new brewing building and facility on the site's current location on Second Avenue.

The new facility is expected to be much more energy and water efficient than its current incarnation, city council heard last week. The new equipment is expected to use half as much water as the current equipment to brew beer, saving approximately 45 million litres per year.

Brennan said the company had considered moving the brewery from its original location but ultimately decided on staying at its present headquarters. Originally opened ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Five Sons Brewing to begin serving its beers on April 15
Honey Ope’s Cream Ale, Cheerio English Bitters, and Quail’s Irish Red are three of six brews that Five Sons Brewing, located on Main Street in Marenisco, will begin serving next Friday, April 15, WLUC reported.

Owner Bruce Mahler is a retired police officer who says he’s been working on his passion for brewing for quite some time.

“I started home brewing since 2017 my wife and I took a course at Gogebic Community College with Cold Iron Brewery and learned how to brew professionally, it’s taken about a year to get to this point.”

Mahler says he transformed a former medical clinic into the craft brewery. The idea was formed with a 15-gallon home brewing system in a garage. After years of practice and an upgrade to a new three-barrel system, the brewery was formed. And during his journey, the pandemic did not prove to be an obstacle.

“During the pandemic, I was redoing this building, I was working on my formulas and recipes for craft beer. So it really didn’t affect me.”

The brewery prides itself on using the finest ingredients, water, and traditional brewing techniques with Austrian and German influences. Mahler also says as a local craft brewery, he works with other breweries ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: The Oswego Beer Project awarded $500,000 in grants and tax credits
A plan to open a new craft brewery in the city of Oswego has been awarded $500,000 in state economic development grants and tax credits, Syracuse.com reported on April 8.

The money is contingent on the project moving forward, and there are requirements such as job creation to receive the full amount.

The Oswego Beer Project would be located in the American Foundry building at 246 W. Seneca St. That building has most recently been home to an event venue, which is now closed.

“The Oswego Beer Project brewery will manufacture up to 20 flavors of locally crafted beer & seltzer drinks including seasonal flavors for local and NYS distribution,” according to a listing of new grants approved by the state’s Regional Economic Development Council.

The money has been awarded to the project’s developer, Strategic Domains LLC. It’s packaged in two separate grants: A $300,00 Empire State Development grant and $200,000 in Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits.

The money would be used to renovate the building and launch the brewery, the state’s listing said.

Details of the brewery project are still being worked out, said Ed Alberts, CEO of Strategic Domains. He did not disclose the estimated total cost of the project.

“We are working through details ...More info on site

Hops news Russia: Russian brewers ask government to help in replacing imported hops
Russian brewers have asked the agriculture ministry to help them find ways to replace imported hops in the next few years as they fear shortages, the Kommersant newspaper reported on April 8.

Hops are an essential flavouring ingredient and Russian-owned brewers import 98% of the 7,000–7,500 tonnes they use every year, mainly from Germany, the Czech Republic and the United States.

Russia's domestic brewers could also face higher demand as European rivals Carlsberg and Heineken have announced plans to exit the Russian market.

Most Russian-owned firms had enough hops to last them a few months, but would run into serious problems in summer if supplies were disrupted, the Russian Union of Brewers said in a letter seen by Kommersant.

The union asked the government to support the establishment of local production, although the process is likely to take some time.

The Association of Russian Hops Producers estimates that it would need more than 500 million roubles ($6.4 million) in annual state subsidies for 3-5 years to increase production to 1,000 tonnes by 2030, the newspaper said.

Brewery news UK: Budweiser Budvar rebrands its unpasteurised lager Kraüsened as Budvar Nefiltr
Budweiser Budvar has launched a rebrand of its unfiltered and unpasteurised lager Kraüsened, renaming it Budvar Nefiltr, The Drinks Business reported on April 6.

The Czech beer Budvar Nefiltr, which blends mature and fresh batches to create a hazy, unfiltered 4% ABV lager, is set to be sold in the UK exclusively on draught.

According to Budweiser Budvar, the rebrand better reflects brewery’s Czech origins and amplifies in its mission to build the reputation of the Czech Republic as one of “the world’s great beer cultures”.

The name Nefiltr is also intended to highlight the beer’s unfiltered nature and set Nefiltr apart from Budvar’s core family of Czech lagers.

Budweiser Budvar UK managing director Jitka Vlčková said: “The 4% category has shown significant growth in recent years as drinkers look to enjoy the great flavour of beer without the higher alcohol content. At Budvar, we use the same four ingredients as we do for our Original, Dark and Nealko lagers: whole-cone Saaz hops from Žatec; natural, soft water from our own artesian well; Czech malting barley from Moravia; and our heritage strain of yeast. However, it is the absence of filtration that is the key to a premium, full-flavoured lager.”

Vlčková explained: “With Budvar Nefiltr, ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain: Damm becomes Spain’s first brewery to ‘go green’
Damm becomes the first Spanish brewery to ‘go green’ after joining the RE100 initiative, which promotes the use of 100 per cent green energy by the world’s most influential companies. Damm produces Estrella which is an extremely popular Spanish beer, the Euro Weekly News reported on April 8.

The announcement made by the company on Thursday, April 7, stated that 100 per cent of the electricity purchased at all Damm’s production and packaging centres and warehouses is certified as renewable energy – making it the national brewery with the largest renewable electricity generation capacity.

“Damm has joined the RE100, the global initiative that brings together the most important companies in the world that have shown their commitment to the use of 100 per cent renewable energy,” a statement read. “This reaffirms our commitment to sustainability by being the first Spanish brewery to join this initiative.”
