Germany: Brewers’ Association warns of price increases due to war in Ukraine

The chief executive of the German Brewers' Association has warned that price increases due to the war in Ukraine are set to hit the country’s breweries shortly. The rising cost of gas, fertiliser, fuel and raw materials could cause a sharp increase in the price of beer, IAmExpat.de reported on April 10
After two years of reduced sales due to bar and restaurant closures during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany, the food and drink industries thought they’d found the perfect opportunity to get back on their feet when the roll-back of COVID-19 measures was announced in early 2022. Unfortunately, that no longer seems to be the case.
While lockdowns and closures are no longer an imminent threat, the industry, much like many other sectors, is being battered by price rises in the wake of the war in Ukraine. Brewers across the country are seeing their costs spike due to supply issues and the increasing cost of energy.

When Val Nasubo wanted a drink, she did what most people in Kenya do: headed out to a bar to share a round with friends, Bloomberg reported on April 13. But now the 31-year-old data analyst from Nairobi has discovered she prefers having a drink at home. “I love the comfort of fixing myself a drink after a long day at work,” she says. “I’m always searching for new cocktail recipes.”
Alcohol producers in Africa hope that Nasubo’s stay-at-home approach is part of a trend that could solve a tricky problem. The pandemic proved especially difficult for makers of drinks there. Diageo Plc has said that 75% of its alcohol revenue in Africa came from drinking establishments and restaurants before the pandemic. So when the spread of Covid-19 kept patrons away from crowded social settings, consumers didn’t readily shift to at-home drinking.

Ireland, Canada & USA: Diageo settles long-running action over Guinness brew origin

Diageo has settled a long-running US class action over the marketing of a Guinness product in the US after consumers complained it looked like it was made in Dublin, despite being brewed in Canada, Independent.ie reported on April 10.
The class action between lead plaintiff Kieran O’Hara and Diageo started in 2015 and was recently resolved following mediation.
In his court complaint from 2015, O’Hara alleged the outer packaging of Guinness Extra Stout sold in stores at the time could lead consumers to believe it was brewed in the St James’ Gate brewery in Dublin.
The complaint said Guinness Extra Stout was brewed in New Brunswick, Canada, with the location noted in small print on the side of the bottles.
He said he bought the product at a “premium price” because he thought it was from Dublin, claiming he and other consumers had been damaged.
The Salem News said around $770,000 (€706,000) was set aside to reimburse customers. The rest will go to the lawyers, $1.3m in legal fees and costs.
Diageo did not admit liability or wrongdoing.
“We are pleased both sides could come together to resolve this matter,” said a Diageo spokesperson.
