Brewery news Ireland, Canada & USA: Diageo settles long-running action over Guinness brew origin
Diageo has settled a long-running US class action over the marketing of a Guinness product in the US after consumers complained it looked like it was made in Dublin, despite being brewed in Canada, Independent.ie reported on April 10.

The class action between lead plaintiff Kieran O’Hara and Diageo started in 2015 and was recently resolved following mediation.

In his court complaint from 2015, O’Hara alleged the outer packaging of Guinness Extra Stout sold in stores at the time could lead consumers to believe it was brewed in the St James’ Gate brewery in Dublin.

The complaint said Guinness Extra Stout was brewed in New Brunswick, Canada, with the location noted in small print on the side of the bottles.

He said he bought the product at a “premium price” because he thought it was from Dublin, claiming he and other consumers had been damaged.

The Salem News said around $770,000 (€706,000) was set aside to reimburse customers. The rest will go to the lawyers, $1.3m in legal fees and costs.

Diageo did not admit liability or wrongdoing.

“We are pleased both sides could come together to resolve this matter,” said a Diageo spokesperson.

Lawyer Kevin McCullough, who represented O’Hara and others in the class action, told US ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: New brewery project coming to San Antonio
A new brewery involving a group that operates community-focused drinking establishments in Austin, Denver, Los Angeles and San Diego will anchor an urban development on Broadway called Make Ready, KSAT.com reported on April 8.

The to-be-named brewery project will be Pouring with Heart’s first project in San Antonio.

“We immediately fell in love with San Antonio because it truly celebrates its culture and community,” said Peter Stanislaus, who heads up development for Pouring with Heart.

Make Ready is expected to include a dozen local tenants in a River North area previously home to part of Cavender’s Cadillac dealership.

Construction is underway and expected to be completed this winter. The site will feature reimagined buildings, including one housing a food court, connected by large courtyards.

The brewery project is currently in the design phase. It’s expected to include an expansive outdoor patio. The establishment will serve craft beer brewed on-site, as well as draft cocktails.

Make Ready will also count among its tenants Mila Coffee, which operates a popular coffee trailer at Broadway News. It will have a stand-alone operation at Make Ready along the new bicycle track currently under construction on Avenue B.

Hixon Properties, which developed The Soto nearby, is also spearheading the Make Ready project.

Brewery news USA, MN: Fairmont Brewing Company to open to customers on April 20
Those who have been patiently waiting for Fairmont Brewing Company to open can mark their calendars. The new business, located at the end of Downtown Plaza in Fairmont, will open for customers at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20.

Owners Joseph and Lea Reimann moved to town from the Twin Cities area in the fall of 2020. They were seeking a safer and slower-paced place to raise their family and fell in love with Fairmont and its lakes.

When asked why they wanted to open a brewery, Lea said, “We didn’t. The people of Fairmont did and they convinced us it was the right direction. It ended up being the right fit for us and I think it’s the right fit for Fairmont.”

“There was a lot of energy and support for wanting a brewery in town. There hadn’t been a brewery in Fairmont since 1879,” Joe added.

There was a Request for Proposal out for the former Senior Citizen Center at 414 Downtown Plaza. Lea said the city was looking for people who were interested in enhancing the community and bringing people into the downtown area.

While the process was long, the Reimanns finally closed on the building at the end of May 2021. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Lineage Brewing to close its Clintonville brewpub
Lineage Brewing announced on social media that after seven years in business it will be closing its Clintonville brewpub. Lineage's last day of operation will be Sunday, April 24, the Columbus Alive reported on April 13.

"Words cannot describe the outpouring of love and generosity this community has shown our business and our employees, and we thank you," Lineage wrote on Instagram. "We made this difficult decision in order to focus on our families and other future endeavors."

The building, located at 2971 N. High St., won't remain empty long, however, with Combustion Brewery & Taproom announcing today that it would expand operations and take over the Clintonville spot, targeting a summer opening.

“We are moving into the space currently occupied by Lineage Brewing as they move on to pursue other opportunities," Combustion co-owner Sarah Jackson said in a press release. "We wish them well and are thrilled to bring our beer and cider to the Clintonville community this summer."

This will be the second Columbus location for Combustion, which is gearing up to celebrate the fifth anniversary of its original taproom in Pickerington on Saturday, April 16.

Brewery news USA, MN: Disgruntled Brewing to shut down on May 15
Disgruntled Brewing announced on Facebook earlier today that it will be shutting down on May 15th, the Valley News Live reported on April 8.

The post says the losses it has taken the past couple of years have taken a toll, which is leading them to regretfully close doors.

The brewery has been open for six years.

It says people are invited to stop in while they can to celebrate the success of the business.

Disgruntled is working on a special, farewell IPA and a farewell party.

Until then, the Perham-based brewery says taps will continue to flow, no events have been canceled, and off-sale is still available for purchase.

Brewery news Germany: Brewers’ Association warns of price increases due to war in Ukraine
The chief executive of the German Brewers' Association has warned that price increases due to the war in Ukraine are set to hit the country’s breweries shortly. The rising cost of gas, fertiliser, fuel and raw materials could cause a sharp increase in the price of beer, IAmExpat.de reported on April 10

After two years of reduced sales due to bar and restaurant closures during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany, the food and drink industries thought they’d found the perfect opportunity to get back on their feet when the roll-back of COVID-19 measures was announced in early 2022. Unfortunately, that no longer seems to be the case.

While lockdowns and closures are no longer an imminent threat, the industry, much like many other sectors, is being battered by price rises in the wake of the war in Ukraine. Brewers across the country are seeing their costs spike due to supply issues and the increasing cost of energy.

"The development is dramatic for the breweries in Germany: We are seeing unprecedented price increases for raw materials, packaging, energy and logistics," said Holger Eichele, General Manager of the German Brewers' Association. "The costs are skyrocketing; they threaten to get completely out of ...More info on site

Brewery news Africa: Alcohol sales rebound thanks to influencers encouraging consumers to drink at home
When Val Nasubo wanted a drink, she did what most people in Kenya do: headed out to a bar to share a round with friends, Bloomberg reported on April 13. But now the 31-year-old data analyst from Nairobi has discovered she prefers having a drink at home. “I love the comfort of fixing myself a drink after a long day at work,” she says. “I’m always searching for new cocktail recipes.”

Alcohol producers in Africa hope that Nasubo’s stay-at-home approach is part of a trend that could solve a tricky problem. The pandemic proved especially difficult for makers of drinks there. Diageo Plc has said that 75% of its alcohol revenue in Africa came from drinking establishments and restaurants before the pandemic. So when the spread of Covid-19 kept patrons away from crowded social settings, consumers didn’t readily shift to at-home drinking.

As sales missed expectations, the industry responded by trying to get Africans to warm to the idea of buying booze for home consumption. It wasn’t easy. Most people associate alcohol with hanging out at a local watering hole or storefront, where there are usually tables and chairs. And many thought they didn’t have the space to host gatherings in their ...More info on site
