India: Owner of Indian craft beer Bira 91 goes back to its roots to beat inflation
|
B9 Beverages Pvt., the owner of Indian craft beer Bira 91, is pushing its premium bottles more to protect its margin as costs of ingredients, energy and transport escalate.
The current operating environment is “extremely tough” as costs have risen 30-70%, forcing the company to sell more of its premium portfolio compared to the mass-market products, Chief Executive Officer Ankur Jain, who founded the brewer in 2015, told BloombergQuint in an interview.
The company began by selling premium beer and expanded into the mass-market category just before the pandemic. Still, it has a “double-digit” market share in the premium segment, Jain said without disclosing the number. Having a stronger portfolio of beers targeting consumers in larger cities than towns gives it an advantage: wealthier drinkers are less sensitive to price increases.
The brewer's strategy underscores how consumer firms are trying ease the pinch of higher costs. Covid-19 disrupted supply chains, sending commodity prices soaring. Barley has surged 62.5% over a year earlier and 5% sequentially in the quarter ended March, according to Motilal Oswal report, with the latest spike driven by Russia's war in Ukraine. Ukraine, with 18% of exports in 2022, is among the top five producers of barley, it said.

Romania: Molson Coors’ Pravha beer expands into Romania
|
Praha, a Pilsner from Staropramen that brings together lower alcohol, light taste and bold flavor, has expanded into Romania, continuing its rapid expansion across Europe after launching just over a year ago, the MarketScreener reported on April 19.
Praha has proved popular among drinkers in Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary and Serbia because of its combination of bold flavor and light taste, says Boris Jaranovic, senior manager for premium brands in Central and Eastern Europe.
"Younger consumers want to try new, progressive types of beer that are smooth in taste but also bold in flavor and image. That's why Praha achieved such success in a short amount of time," Jaranovic says. "The quality and craftsmanship mean a lot."
The brand's momentum led to the decision to expand into Romania, one of the region's biggest markets and its sixth in Central and Eastern Europe.
With the expansion, the brand expects to double its volume.
The opportunity to introduce a premium, 4% alcohol-by-volume Pilsner with a strong Czech pedigree like Praha's is illustrative of Molson Coors Beverage Company's strategy of growing its above-premium portfolio.
Along with Praha, the company has found resounding success with Madri Excepcional in Ireland and the U.K., leading an expansion into the

North America: Export price indications for Canadian barley remain firm
|
Canadian barley export price indications remain firm, and aligned to France price levels, RMI Analytics said in their latest report earlier this month.
Global market prices have risen to a point where Canada is competitive again on the world stage (crop 2022). Farmer contracting prices for crop 2022 continue to rise in an attempt to secure malting barley area. Prices are still below crop 2021 levels following the drought, which may limit farmer interest.
Imported US corn into Alberta totalled 650 thousand tonnes during February 2022, and continues on a very strong import plan which may reach 5 mln tonnes by the end of this crop year.
|
USA: Barley stocks estimated 40% down this year
|
USDA stocks and plantings report of March 31, 2022 puts U.S. wheat stocks 22% down y/y to 28 mln tonnes, barley stocks 40% down to 1.58 mln tonnes, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their April report.
The planting intentions upset markets, soybeans are up from 87.2 to 90.95 mln acres, corn down from 93.4 to 89.5 mln acres. Wheat is slightly up to 47.35 mln acres. Barley is up from 2.66 to 2.94 mln acres, the best figure since years and a consequence of the bad supply gap in the present campaign.
Both U.S. wheat and corn stocks and acreage show the risk of very tight balances in 2022/23. The inverse of new crop prices has shrunk.

UK: Defra approves field trails of genetically modified barley
|
Defra has approved field trials of genetically modified barley that scientists say could reduce the need for synthetic fertilisers, the Farmers Weekly reported on April 21.
The trial, run by researchers at the Crop Science Centre in Cambridge, will evaluate whether improved crop interaction with naturally occurring soil fungi can result in more sustainable food production.
The barley variety has been genetically modified to boost expression levels of the NSP2 gene.
This gene is naturally present in barley and boosting its expression enhances the crop’s capacity to engage with mycorrhizal fungi.
Starting this April, the small field trials will take place over the next five years at three sites operated by the Crop Science Centre, which is a partnership between the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (Niab) and the University of Cambridge.
Professor Giles Oldroyd is leading the trial and said there was an urgent need to satisfy the demands of a growing population, while respecting limits on natural resources.
“We believe biotechnology can be a valuable tool for expanding the options available to farmers around the world,” he said.
The trial will also test varieties of barley that have been gene-edited to suppress their interaction with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF).
The scientists say this will help them

Australia: Coopers Brewery to enter the whiskey market
|
The largest Australian owned brewery Coopers Brewery has announced plans to enter the whiskey market and will build a A$50 million visitor centre, microbrewery and whisky distillery at its Regency Park site in Adelaide, the Australian Manufacturing Forum reported on April 22.
In its 160th year, privately-owned Coopers has its eyes on domestic and international tourists with the investment which brings total investment at the site to more than A$400 million.
Coopers Managing Director Dr Tim Cooper said: “We’re very proud of our story over the past 160 years, arising from humble beginnings to prevail as an Australian-owned and operated brewery despite wars, recessions and takeover offers.
“This new visitor centre is about celebrating our history and our originality, with an emphasis on what makes Coopers different.”
The new centre will include a restaurant and bar, outdoor plaza dining, dedicated tasting room, interactive history display, microbrewery, whiskey distillery and underground stillage for whisky maturation.
“Although we’ve been running brewery tours since 2006, this extensive development will augment and expand the guest experience, creating a lasting impression for new visitors and an ongoing connection for our loyal consumers with new tour and tasting experiences.”
Coopers released images of the two-storey centre – inspired by the iconic Coopers’
