Brewery news Brazil: Ambev to build sustainable glass plant in Parana
Ambev is to invest BRZ870 million reais (US $154 million) in a new sustainable glass plant in Paraná, Brazil, the Glass International reported on April 25.

It will have the capacity to produce bottles from recycled or broken glass, collected in partnership with local companies and organisations which specialise in reverse logistics.

The glass plant will operate with 100% renewable electricity or renewable purchased electricity, have the capacity to run on biofuels, and use technology to ensure water and energy efficiency.

Expected to start operating in 2025, it will produce bottles for brands such as Stella Artois, Beck’s and Spaten, and will supply Ambev breweries across several states, including Paraná.

“This new glass plant is another important step in our sustainability journey,” says Rodrigo Figueiredo, Vice President of Sustainability and Procurement at Ambev.

“It will make a positive impact on several aspects of our brewing operations ecosystem. In addition to working toward our Circular Packaging Goal, the plant will play an important role in helping us meet other sustainability goals, including having 100% purchased electricity coming from renewable sources."

Ambev's first glass plant opened in 2008 in Rio de Janeiro.

Today, it operates with the highest percentage of recycled material in Brazil and it is the country’s ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Asahi to raise prices for its Super Dry beer and other beverages for the first time in years
Asahi Group Holdings Ltd. will raise prices for its Super Dry beer and other beverages for the first time in years, joining Lawson Inc., McDonald’s Holdings Co. Japan and other companies facing rising costs for ingredients, packaging and transport, Bloomberg reported on April 26.

The price hike, which includes kegs, Yoichi whiskeys and other beverages, will take effect for shipments from Oct. 1, the Tokyo-based brewer said in a statement Tuesday. Retail prices will increase 6% to 10%, a company spokesman said.

Although consumers in rich economies across the world have been experiencing the impact of inflation for more than a year, shoppers in Japan have become accustomed to flat prices, and even deflation, for the better part of three decades. Energy costs are also on the rise, and the recent weakness of the yen is also pushing up costs for imported goods, contributing to price hikes.

“We expect that the various costs associated with production and logistics will continue to rise, and it will be difficult to offset these increases,” Asahi said. The brewer last raised canned beer prices in 2008, while bottles and kegs became more expensive in 2018.

Earlier this month, convenience-store operator Lawson said it will raise the price of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Boston Beer Company reports Q1 financial results
The Boston Beer Company, Inc. on April 21 reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 26, 2022. Key results were:

First quarter depletions decreased 7% and first quarter shipments decreased 25.1% compared to the quarter ended March 27, 2021.

First quarter net revenue of $430.1 million decreased 21.1% compared to the net revenue realized in the first quarter of 2021.

First quarter gross margin of 40.2% was 5.6 percentage points below the 2021 first quarter margin of 45.8%.

First quarter operating expenses of $175.1 million increased 1.2% compared to the first quarter of 2021.

First quarter net loss of $2.0 million or $0.16 per diluted share, decreased from net income of $65.6 million or $5.26 per diluted share in the first quarter of 2021. This change between periods was primarily driven by decreased net revenue and gross margins.

Full-year depletion and shipment growth continues to be estimated at between 4% and 10%.

"Despite our depletions decline, we gained dollar share in measured off-premise channels in the first quarter – the second-largest share gain among brewers," said Chairman and Founder Jim Koch. "The out-of-stock issues that affected our first quarter performance have improved during the quarter, setting us up for additional growth over the rest ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Peroni Nastro Azzurro launches ambitious marketing campaign to gain more imported beer market share
While nearly all of the growth in imported beer comes from Mexican brands like Modelo Especial, Dos Equis, and Pacifico, Italian beer brand Peroni Nastro Azzurro has launched an ambitious marketing campaign to set itself up as a leader for the rest of the import category. The brand, owned by Molson Coors Beverage Company, has set a short-term goal of doubling volume by 2025 and a pie-in-the-sky, long-term hope of becoming a 1-million-barrel brand in the U.S, the Good Beer Hunting reported on April 22.

Thanks to a well-funded marketing effort and distribution into new locations, Peroni did double its sales volume from 2017-2021, but would need to increase at a rate reserved for the fastest-growing brands in the country to double again between 2021-2025. The brand would also need to sell 10 times more beer than it currently does to reach 1 million BBLs. Drinkers bought about 93,000 BBLs of Peroni in 2021 through chain retail, and the company says about 40% of volume additionally comes from draft sales.

Still, these goals represent a serious effort to capitalize on interest in imports beyond Mexican Lager. Peroni’s growth would likely come at the expense of its major European beer competitors such as ...More info on site
