World: Molson Coors says first-quarter profits soared thanks to larges sales growth in more than a decade
|
Molson Coors Beverage Co. said on May 3 its profits soared in the first quarter for its largest quarterly sales growth in more than a decade.
The Colorado and Montreal-based company, which reports in U.S. dollars, says it earned US$151.5 million or 70 cents per diluted share, up from US$84.1 million or 39 cents per share a year earlier.
Underlying net income excluding one-time items was US$63.8 million or 29 cents per share, compared with US$1.6 million or one cent per share in the first quarter of fiscal 2021.
Revenues for the three months ended March 31 were US$2.2 billion, up nearly 17 per cent from US$1.9 billion, primarily as a result of strong growth outside of North America amid fewer on-premise restrictions in Europe.
Net sales in the Americas increased 8.5 per cent due to higher net pricing and sales mix even as brand volumes declined 4.5 per cent in Canada and 4.3 per cent in the U.S. Net sales in other global markets were up 84.2 per cent as brand volumes were up nearly 20 per cent.
Molson Coors was expected to post US$2.1 billion in revenues, according to financial data firm Refinitiv.

Japan: Four major brewers to ramp up production in May
|
Japanese beer brewers are ramping up output to meet demand from restaurants, pubs and bars during the spring break. The seasonal holiday is the first in three years without coronavirus-related restrictions on social outings, NHK.jp reported on May 2.
The country's four major brewers will be raising production in May, compared to the same period last year. Asahi will hike by around 400 percent, Suntory by 370 percent, Kirin by 300 percent, and Sapporo by 200 percent.
Even so, the output will be around half the pre-pandemic level in 2019.
The current trend may be short-lived. The beer makers aren't sure whether they will continue raising output after the holidays end.

South Africa: AB InBev opens investment taps at its South Africa breweries
|
The world’s largest brewer is poised to increase production of two of its popular beverages — Redds and Flying Fish — with a huge R920-million capital injection into its Gqeberha and Prospecton breweries, the HeraldLIVE reported on April 30.
AB InBev will pump R270million into the Ibhayi Brewery in Perseverance this year with further investment in the pipeline.
The investment was first revealed at the recent SA investment conference hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa and underlines AB InBev’s commitment to its operations in the Eastern Cape.
Operating under the name Project Beyond, the capital injection will capitalise on the growth of flavoured alcoholic beverages in the SA market by increasing brewing capacity.
The aim is to ramp up production of the company’s “beyond beer” category, which includes flavoured alcoholic beverages.
SA Breweries’ Ibhayi Brewery plant manager, Thembinkosi Thwala, said the company was encouraged by the growth in popularity of its beyond-beer products.
“This investment is an opportunity to satisfy increased demand while increasing the economic and social impact we can have in the region,” he said.
SAB operates as a subsidiary of the multinational company after a $122-billion (R1.92-trillion) takeover of SABMiller in 2016.
The Ibhayi Brewery injection follows a R2-billionn capital investment the company committed for

UK: Heineken to upgrade its suburban pub estate this year
|
Heineken is to invest a further £42 mln in upgrading its suburban pub estate this year driven by a rise in people working from home, The Caterer reported on May 2.
Some 660 Star Pubs and Bars sites, more than a quarter of the brewer's pub arm, will benefit with 137 receiving a makeover costing more than £125,000.
The investment will go towards improving outdoor seating areas, adding lighting, heaters and additional seats so they can be used year-round.
Kitchens and bar areas will also be refitted to create a more ‘premium' experience and food and drink offer.
Spending will be focused on suburban pubs and those on high streets near residential neighbourhoods to reflect the rise in people working at home during the week, Heineken said.
Lawson Mountstevens, managing director at Star Pubs and Bars, said: "People have stayed closer to home over the last two years due to the pandemic and have turned to their local for the kind of experience they'd previously have travelled to a city centre, restaurant or bar to find.
"They don't want to turn back time: they expect better quality including food and specialty drinks – such as cocktails – that are harder to recreate at home. It's the

Belgium & Ukraine: AB InBev to introduce Ukrainian beer Chernigivske to the Belgian market
|
Belgian brewing giant AB InBev, owner of major Belgian beer brands Stella Artois, Jupiler, and Leffe (among others), will soon introduce popular Ukrainian beer Chernigivske to the Belgian market, according to a company press release.
All profits from the sales of the beer will be donated to charity.
AB InBev’s Ukraine factories are currently closed down due to Russia’s invasion of the country. The international alcoholic beverage company will transfer production of the Ukrainian beer to its facility in Leuven, Flanders.
Chernigivske beer will appear on supermarket shelves in Colruyt, Carrefour, and Delhaize in mid-May. The beer will also be available in interested catering establishments. Chernigivske has already hit supermarket shelves in the United Kingdom.
Chernigivske is the most popular beer in Ukraine, according to Ab InBev. The company plans to donate at least €5 million in sales of the beer to Ukrainian humanitarian aid organisations, such as Caritas International.
The initiative is being spearheaded by Ukrainian staff who relocated from Ukraine to Belgium at the outbreak of the war. Anna Rudenko, Marketing Director for Chernigivske, said that the initiative will help Ukrainians and offer a new experience for Belgian consumers.
“Chernigivske has been loved by many generations in Ukraine. I am very proud that we

Ukraine: 2021/22 July-June grain exports reach 45.709 mln tonnes
|
Ukraine's grain exports have reached 45.709 million tonnes so far in the 2021/22 July-June season, the agriculture ministry said on April 29 as it resumed publishing grain export data.
The ministry said the volume included 763,000 tonnes exported in April but gave no comparative figures. Senior agriculture officials said this month that Ukraine exported up 300,000 tonnes of grain in March.
Ukraine exported up to 6 million tonnes of grain a month before Russia invaded the country.
"We have already agreed with Poland, Lithuania, Germany, Bulgaria, Romania and in parallel we are actively negotiating the use of port infrastructure of these countries for the export of Ukrainian products," Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal told a televised government meeting.
The ministry said the 2021/22 export volumes included 18.5 million tonnes of wheat, 21.1 million tonnes of corn and 5.7 million tonnes of barley.
April's exports included 115,000 tonnes of wheat, 622,000 tonnes of corn and 25,000 tonnes of barley.
The ministry did not clarify how grain was delivered.
Ukraine, a major agricultural producer, used to export most of its goods through seaports but has been forced by Russia's invasion to export by train via its western border or via its small Danube river ports.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said

Ukraine: Farmers sow 844,000 ha of spring barley so far
|
Ukraine's farmers have sown around 31% of the area expected for the 2022 spring crops sowing, or 4.7 million hectares, Ukrainian grain traders union UGA said on May 3, citing official data.
The union said Ukraine planned to sow 11.45 million hectares of spring grains this year, 3.5 to 4 million hectares less than in 2021 due to the Russian invasion, the "occupation of territories" and mining.
The official data shows that farmers had sown 180,000 hectares of spring wheat, 844,000 hectares of spring barley, 1.274 million hectares of corn and some other commodities.
It shows the area under spring wheat could total 190,000 hectares, 900,000 hectares of spring barley and 3.9 million hectares of corn.
Ukraine's agriculture ministry gave no 2022 grain crop outlook. It has said the sowing area could fall 20% this year due to fighting with Russian troops in many regions.
