Barley news Canada: Grain stocks all down on March 31, except for corn and soybeans - Statistics Canada
Stocks of wheat, canola, barley, dry peas, oats and lentils were all down on March 31, 2022 compared with the same day a year earlier, a result largely attributable to lower opening supply. Conversely, stocks of corn for grain and soybeans rose, Statistics Canada reported.

Lower total supplies for most crops were the result of lower production in 2021. This contributed to a decrease in exports for most crops, despite strong global demand. Both domestic and international grain markets continue to face uncertainty because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and international tensions.

Stocks of total wheat fell 38.7% year over year to 10.1 million tonnes as of March 31. On-farm stocks decreased 52.8% to 6.0 million tonnes, while commercial stocks rose 9.2% to 4.1 million tonnes. Stocks of wheat excluding durum were down 36.5% to 8.6 million tonnes, while durum wheat stocks fell 49.1% to 1.5 million tonnes.

As of March 31, deliveries of wheat at the national level fell 28.8% to 16.2 million tonnes. Exports of wheat fell 44.0% to 10.0 million tonnes, 7.9 million tonnes lower compared with the same date in 2021.

Domestic use of wheat increased 14.9%, largely on higher demand for animal feed, which rose 24.7% to 4.9 million ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Beer industry reverting to pre-pandemic trends - distributors
For the fourth month in a row in 2022, distributors report that the beer industry is reverting to pre-pandemic trends. The April 2022 Beer Purchasers’ Index (BPI) from the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA)shows a “total beer” reading of 55 and an “at-risk” inventory reading of 47. This combination of readings is an improvement over the first three months (Q1) with “at-risk” inventories falling below 50 as the industry heads into the second quarter.

The dramatic drop in the FMB/seltzer category continues, falling to 40 in April 2022 from 90 in April 2021. Imports and premium lights both reported expansionary readings for the month. The craft beer index also took a hit this month.

The BPI is the only forward-looking indicator for distributors to measure expected beer demand. The index surveys beer distributors’ purchases across different segments and compares them to previous years. A reading greater than 50 indicates the segment is expanding, while a reading below 50 indicates the segment is contracting.

Looking across the segments for April:

The index for imports continues to remain in expansion territory with a reading of 70 in April 2022, only slightly below the April 2021 reading of 74.

The craft index at 48 is significantly below last ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Bootleggers and Barrels already open in New Bern
New Bern businessman Dale Overbee has not slowed down since he began fulfilling his dream of bringing nightlife to the area, the Sun Journal reported on May 5.

Already the owner of several local businesses, Overbee opened his latest venture, Bootleggers and Barrels on May 4.

The bar, brewery and distillery is at 417 B S. Front St. in downtown New Bern beside Blackbeard's Triple Play Restaurant & Bar and Pirate's Cove Triple Play Seafood & Oyster Bar, both of which are also owned by Overbee.

Overbee said Bootleggers & Barrels will not only offer patrons a full-service bar with 44 tap beers, other popular domestics and a wide variety of liquors and wines, he will also serve his own brand of vodka, a special brewed craft beer and Overbee's Shine, a moonshine that will be made in-house with his hybrid reflux still.

Manager Ashley Sandklev said there are three parts to the business.

"The brewing part is called Triple Play Brewing," she said. "It's an ode to Dale's first business, Triple Play Restaurant & Bar that was in James City." This is in addition to the bar and the distillery, coined as Overbee's Stillrey.

Sandklev said they will also offer alcohol-infused coffees and ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NB: Pump House Brewery to expand to new location in Shediac
Pump House Brewery has announced that it will soon be expanding to a new location in Shediac, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 6.

As reported by Huddle Today, Pump House owners Brad Devarennes, Kolin Barley, and Brian Harriman have taken over the former Bayou Pub and Eatery at 607 Main St., and the 3000-square-foot space is currently being prepared to reopen as a Pump House brewery and pub.

“We anticipate it will open in June and it will be a year-round brewery in Shediac,” said Harriman in an interview. “It’s a growing community and there aren’t any craft breweries in Shediac at the moment – we saw a need out there. The locals are excited to see Pump House become a part of the community.”

Once it opens, the Shediac brewpub will be the third location for Pump House, joining the original brewpub in downtown Moncton, and the production brewery and Fill Station taproom on the city’s outskirts.

Barley news Ukraine: Farmers sown 854,000 ha of barley so far
Ukrainian farmers have sown 6.1 million hectares of spring grains and oilseeds as of May 5, with corn and sunflower dominating the area, Ukrainian grain traders union UGA said on May 6.

UGA said in a report the sown area included 1.98 million hectares of corn, 2.4 million hectares of sunflower, 854,000 hectares of barley, 336,000 hectares of soy beans and 186,000 hectares of spring wheat.

The union has said Ukraine planned to sow 11.45 million hectares of spring grains this year, 3.5 to 4 million hectares less than in 2021 due to the Russian invasion, the "occupation of territories" and landmines.

It also said the area under spring wheat could total 190,000 hectares, 900,000 hectares of spring barley and 3.9 million hectares of corn.

Ukraine's agriculture ministry gave no 2022 grain crop outlook. It has said the sowing area could fall 20% this year due to fighting with Russian troops in many regions.
