Brewery news USA, CA: Moonlight Brewing severs partnership with Heineken, takes on smaller-scale local partner instead
In an unusual trajectory, one of the Bay Area’s most beloved craft breweries has severed a partnership with a global beer corporation and instead taken on a smaller-scale, local partner, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on May 13.

For the past six years, Heineken International has owned half of Moonlight Brewing, the 30-year-old Santa Rosa maker of popular beers like Death & Taxes and Reality Czeck. On May 13, Moonlight announced that it had transferred that 50% stake to Patrick Rue, the former owner of southern California’s the Bruery and current owner of Erosion, a wine and beer producer in Napa Valley.

“Moonlight is preserved,” said founder Brian Hunt, who will step back from day-to-day operations while retaining his 50% ownership.

The partnership aligns two highly respected figures within California’s craft beer industry. Hunt has long had a devoted fanbase among beer-industry insiders for his subtle-tasting beers and his refusal to jump on brewing fads. Rue developed a cult-like following at the Bruery, which he founded in Orange County in 2008, thanks to his experimental beers and exclusive membership program. He moved to Napa and started Erosion after selling a majority stake in the Bruery to a Boston private equity firm in 2017.

Brewery news USA, WA: Trap Door Brewing ready to expand by opening a second location
In 2015, Brian Shull formed Trap Door Brewing and opened the brewery and taproom in Vancouver, Washington’s Uptown Village neighborhood. The company just announced that it is now ready to expand by opening a second location, increasing production, and widening distribution, the Washington Beer Blog reported on May 9.

The new location, The Gateway, will open this summer in Washougal, Washington. The 6,500-square-foot facility will include a taproom with a range of Trap Door beers, a kitchen, cocktails, wine, and eventually a new production brewery. The company hopes to host the grand opening sometime this summer.

“We enjoy being a part of the revival of uptown village in Vancouver and we want to create that same experience on Main Street in Washougal,” said Bryan Shull, Trap Door’s founder.

Trap Door Brewing landed on the name, The Gateway, as a nod to Washougal’s geographic position as the gateway to the scenic Columbia River gorge. Shull said Trap Door principals have taken ownership of the century-old building which was converted into a brewery by a prior owner and operator.

Most recently, the location at 1834 Main Street in downtown Washougal was home to Logsdon Farmhouse Ales, which closed in 2021. Before that, it was the home ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Third Eye Brewing opening a second location
Popular Sharonville brewery Third Eye Brewing is opening a second location, the CityBeat reported on May 9.

The brewery opened its original spot in June 2020. Now, Third Eye Brewing is gearing up to open a new place in Hamilton in early 2023, per a release.

The Hamilton location is set to be home to a 10,000-square-foot production facility that will allow Third Eye to increase its annual barrel production from 2,000 to 10,000.

With more beer comes more people, and Third Eye plans to accommodate the crowds in its 6,000-square-foot taproom, which includes a covered patio and a full kitchen run by chef Steven Vanderpool. There are also plans for a 5,000-square-foot private event and barrel-aging space on the facility's lower level. “It will have its own unique feel but still have our Third Eye vibe making it a great place to come and hang out with friends and family," Third Eye Brewing co-founder Tom Collins says of the new location in a press release.

This expansion is expected to cost around $3.1 million. “We are very excited to be expanding our production capacity and being a part of all the great things happening in Hamilton,” says Tom Schaefer, co-founder of Third Eye Brewing, in ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Canuck Empire Brewing returns with new facility in Abbotsford
A brewery that originally launched in 2014 in Abbotsford before closing after several years in operation has returned with a new facility in the city’s U-District, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 12.

Canuck Empire Brewing has been established by Brandon Wiggins with an aim to create “Distinctive Beers for Offbeat Canadians”.

While still awaiting the lounge license that will allow the serving of full pints, the taproom is currently pouring samples, flights, and growlers of an opening line-up that includes Rye Porter (7.1% abv), Brown Ale (3.7% abv), Juicy IPA (6% abv), English IPA (5.8% abv), Coast Trail Pale Ale (4.9% abv), Stargazer Chamomile Wheat (5.9% abv), Kiwi Hibiscus Sour (4.3% abv), Dry Hop Sour (4.7% abv), and 11am Lager (4.2% abv).

A selection of non-alcoholic beverages are also available, along with a snack menu that includes grilled cheese sandwiches, waffles, and ice cream sandwiches.

Canuck Empire Brewing is located at 33797 King Road, across from the Abbotsford Centre, and is open Thursday to Sunday.

Brewery news USA, NV: Great Basin Brewing Company coming to Carson City
Great Basin Brewing Company is coming to Carson City, KOLO reported on May 12.

The move marks the company’s first expansion in 10 years.

The Union will begin its remodel on May 16 as it realigns itself under the Great Basin Brewing Company brand. The business will be closed for about two weeks while the work is completed.

“In the past 5 years The Union has been wildly successful – embraced by locals and visitors alike,” said Mark Estee, CEO of Local Food Group. “By bringing Great Basin Brewing Company to the capitol of Nevada, we’re excited to give people the food they’ve come to love from The Union, paired with the award-winning craft beer of Great Basin. It just doesn’t get any better than this!”

Under the remodel, bar seating will be expanded and the upstairs dining area will be more intimate with added booths, according to a press release. The new location will also feature brews such as Ichthyosaur “ICKY” IPA®, Leave No Trace® Alpine Lager and Firelit Haze Hazy IPA as well as craft beers brewed on-site on their 15 barrel brewing system.

Great Basin Brewing Company will also reserve three of their 18 taps for local partners such as Shoe Tree ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Standing Stone Brewing Company to close down after a tough couple of years
Over the past 26 years, Standing Stone Brewing Company (SSBC) in Ashland has given to its community through beers, eats and even donations, KTVL reported on May 12.

SSBC announced on May 11 that it will be closing its doors after a tough couple of years battling intense smoke from fires and the pandemic. The brewery leaves behind decades of community impact and some sad customers.

The company has raised thousands of dollars for local nonprofits through its Pints for a Purpose Program, raised $6000 for World Central Kitchen providing meals to Ukraine refugees, and raised $35000 for Rogue Valley Farm to School.

“They’ve constantly been a bastion of this community and always given from their profits to various causes so it’s sad because that income now will also be lost,” said Dutch Weiss, an SSBC customer of 15 years.

Many customers were shocked to hear the company is shutting down and will miss the food, drinks and environment.

“It’s the kind of place where you eat here and you feel good,” said Steve Sanfilippo, an SSBC customer of over 20 years. “It’s good food and I always liked the beer too.”

Steve Sanfilippo and his wife Teresa have been coming to Standing Stone for more ...More info on site

Barley news France: Barley and wheat crop conditions decline sharply this week
Crop conditions for French wheat and barley crops declined sharply last week as dry weather persisted in the EU's biggest grain-growing country, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on May 13.

An estimated 82% of French soft wheat crops were in good or excellent condition in the week to May 9, down from 89% the previous week, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal report.

That marked a second straight weekly decline in the rating after a two-point drop the previous week. The latest score was nonetheless above a 79% rating a year earlier.

Crop observers have warned that cereals may start losing yield potential, with a hot, dry spell this week expected to increase pressure on plants, before the possible return of rain next week.

FranceAgriMer officials said earlier this week that crops were suffering in particular in the southeast and in zones with light soils, although rainfall in the coming days could avert widespread damage to cereals.

"We're reaching a tipping point for some soil types," Catherine Cauchard, head of FranceAgriMer's crop monitoring service told reporters. "Farmers are hoping for rain so that yield potential can be maintained."

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev doing all it can to minimise price increases - CEO
AB InBev CEO reassures beer drinkers that the brewer is doing all it can to minimise price increases, the MoneyWeb reported on May 13.

Despite the spike in food inflation, beer drinkers won’t have to fork out much more money for the satisfaction of a cold beer.

Michel Doukeris, the new global CEO of brewing giant AB InBev, which owns South African Breweries (SAB), says the company is working hard to manage costs and cushion its customers against price increases.

Doukeris was speaking at a media roundtable in Johannesburg on May 12, on his first official visit to South Africa since assuming his role in July 2021.

According to Doukeris, the company’s exposure to diverse markets – which face vastly different inflationary pressures – has helped it build a resilient business model that’s able to shield consumers from rising cost pressures.

“When we look at what’s happening globally, we see across all categories prices going up but we see that beer so far is lagging inflation. Meaning that the price increases that we put in the market, they are falling behind inflation,” he says.

“We try to organise our price actions in ways that take into consideration not only costs but the overall industry and ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Grain exports more than halve so far in May
Ukraine's grain exports have more than halved so far in May from the same period a year ago, although at just under 300,000 tonnes they are similar to the whole of March, the first full month of Russia's invasion, agriculture ministry data shows.

Ukraine exported 667,000 tonnes in the same period of May 2021. The country exported up to 6 million tonnes of grain a month before Russia invaded the country in February.

The ministry data showed on May 12 Ukraine has exported 46.17 million tonnes so far in the 2021/22 July-June season, versus 39.65 million a season earlier.

The ministry said May's volume included 284,000 tonnes of corn, 8,000 tonnes of barley and 6,000 tonnes of wheat. It did not say how grain was delivered.

Senior agriculture officials have said Ukraine exported up to 300,000 tonnes of grain in March and 1.09 million tonnes in April.

The ministry said 2021/22 export volumes included 18.53 million tonnes of wheat, 21.50 million tonnes of corn and 5.68 million tonnes of barley.

Ukraine, a major agricultural producer, used to export most of its goods through seaports but has been forced by Russia's invasion to export by train via its western border or via its small Danube River ports.
