Brewery news USA, OH: 77 Brew House already open in Navarre
Clint McIntyre and Marshall Boivin's friendship began as coworkers and then grew once they discovered their mutual appreciation for craft beer, the Canton Repository reported on May 16.

Their hobby evolved from a homebrewing kit to purchasing a tank system. A couple of their early concoctions also were good enough to be carried at a Northeast Ohio brewery.

The duo's hobby got out of control, Boivin and McIntyre admitted with shared laughter. So they took a big step in their beer adventures – opening 77 Brew House on May 5.

It was a long road to opening day. COVID-19 presented obstacles and delayed their timeline. For a while, the pals questioned the future of their project.

With all that behind them, 77 Brew House is off to a promising start at 21 Canal St. W in downtown Navarre.

During opening weekend, business was strong. Three of their brews sold out – a pale ale flavored with sweet orange peel and coriander; a small batch test run IPA; and Mudd Flaps, an imperial milk stout with cocoa, hazelnut and peanut butter.

Hours are 4 to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Craft beer on tap includes Main St. Pale Ale and Valknut Red ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Trappist monks of St Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer decide to stop brewing
The Trappist monks of St Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, USA, have decided “after more than a year of consultation and reflection” that brewing is not a “viable business”, The Brussels Times reported on May 15.

They are therefore stopping production of their beer, according to an announcement the company made on Facebook.

There are now only ten Trappist beers left worldwide, five of them being in Belgium: Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle and Westvleteren.

In 2013, Spencer Brewery became the 9th Trappist brewery to get the Authentic Trappist Product label, supported by the monks of Notre Dame de Scourmont Abbey, where the famous Chimay Trappist beer is brewed.

These beers were the first and only American Trappist beers.

Three criteria are required for a Trappist beer to be labelled authentic: part of the proceeds must be donated to social causes, the beer must be brewed in a Trappist abbey, and it must be brewed under the supervision of monks from that order.

Now that the Spencer brewery has disappeared, there are just ten breweries left with the title. The five not in Belgium are La Trappe and Zundert (Netherlands), Engelszell (Austria), Tynt Meadow (England) and Tre Fontane (Italy).

Three other beers (including Achel’s beer) can call themselves Trappist, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Phase Three Brewing Co. to open second Chicago-area location
A three-year-old Illinois-based brewery plans to open a second Chicago-area location by the fourth quarter of 2022, the Chicago Business Journal reported on May 13.

Phase Three Brewing Co. signed a long-term lease to occupy 3,600 square feet at 492–494 S. Spring Road in Elmhurst, Illinois, according to Paul Montes, senior vice president with Inland Commercial Brokerage, who represented Phase Three Brewing along with colleague Eric Spiess.

The brewery now plans to redevelop the former bicycle shop into a taproom, which will include outdoor space.

“Design work and permitting have begun, and construction will begin as soon as permits are provided,” Montes told the Chicago Business Journal.

He added that Phase Three Brewing chose the site in part because of its close proximity to Chicago and “position in central DuPage County,” where the “demographics align with their customers. It is a unique building located on the Illinois Prairie Path, and is a walkable neighborhood to restaurants.”

Montes said that investors have a big appetite for properties located along the I-80, I-39 and I-55 corridors where land prices are less expensive.

“I see a continuation of demand [from investors] for infill sites with existing infrastructure and those with interstate access,” he said.

Based in Lake Zurich, Illinois, Phase ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Cocoon Brewery breaks ground in Ledgeview
A new brewery broke ground in Ledgeview on Friday, May 13, Fox 11 reported.

Cocoon Brewery is going up on Kaftan Way off of County Road G.

The 6,000 square-foot brewery will feature a tap room, beer garden and a food menu. It will also uniquely feature miniature cabins on the roughly four-acre property. The cabins, affectionately called cocoons, will be available for small groups to rent out for a more private experience.

The brewery is owned by twin brothers who used to collect butterflies growing up in Antigo.

One of the brothers, Matt Walters, says he was a home brewer for about five years and a craft beer enthusiast for much longer.

“Our goal with this space is really be an anchor in the community and have a large outdoor spot where people can congregate when the weather is nice or when it’s cold out too. We’re planning to still make it a festive atmosphere throughout the seasons," said Matt Walters.

The brewery is expected to open in the fall.

Brewery news USA, PA: Cooper’s Family Brewing to begin serving its beers in Scranton on May 24
Cooper’s Family Brewing will begin serving microbrews at Cooper’s Seafood House on North Washington Avenue in Scranton on May 24, the Standard-Speaker reported on May 17.

Jack Cooper, who co-owns the restaurant with his brother, Paul, first announced plans in January to build a microbrewery in the cellar.

Jesse Cooper — Jack’s nephew and Paul’s son — who will serve as the brewmaster, is a former research associate in the field of biotechnology. He started homebrewing about four years ago and plans to craft a range of different beer types and varieties from his original recipes.

Brewery news Germany: Brewers warn of beer bottles shortage
Germany's brewers have warned that there might not be enough beer bottles for this coming summer season, the country's media reported on May 18.

"We will see shortages by summer at the latest," Holger Eichele, the chief executive of the German brewers' federation (Deutsche Brauer-Bund), told German newspaper Bild, adding that the situation is "extremely tense."

Stefan Fritsche, deputy chief of the Berlin-Brandenburg Brewers' Association, said the paucity of bottles mainly affected small and mid-sized breweries. "This is threatening the diversity of the Germany beer market."

A spokeswoman for Bitburger Brewery told Bild that the demand for glass bottles on the market "currently often exceeds the existing supply."

The costs of the energy-intensive process to produce beer bottles has been steadily rising of late.

Eichele said that another reason for the shortage is the lack of truck drivers, which is making it harder to maintain supply chains.

"Those without long-term contracts are now having to pay 80% more for new glass bottles than a year ago," Eichele said. "Some breweries are threatened with being left idle, they might soon have no bottles."

Eichele advised consumers to return their empty bottles as quickly as possible to help ease the situation.

Consumers in Germany pay a deposit on glass and ...More info on site
