USA, OH: Ohio hits craft beer milestone of 400 breweries
|
Raise a glass and say cheers, Ohio.
The state has reached a new sudsy milestone, the Akron Beacon Journal reported on May 19.
With the scheduled mid-July opening of the Guernsey Brewhouse in Cambridge, there will be 400 licensed active craft breweries in the state.
There is now at least one brewery in 72 of Ohio's 88 counties. And 40% of these 400 breweries have opened in the last three years.
The Ohio Craft Brewers Association notes the "overwhelming majority" of these sell their beer primarily in on-premises taprooms.
Ohio has averaged 48 new brewery openings a year since 2020 — despite the pandemic — with an average of 11 closings each year.
The association says there are more than 70 new breweries now in the planning stages in the state.
On average, Ohioans of legal drinking age consume about 4.6 gallons of craft beer annually.
This puts Ohio at No. 13 for consumption in the country and 24th for breweries per capita.
Estimates put the financial impact of craft breweries in the state at $880 million in 2020 with about 8,300 jobs.
The association notes Ohio hit the milestone of 300 craft breweries just three years ago.

USA, WA: Trap Door Brewing coming to downtown Washougal
|
Trap Door Brewing is coming to downtown Washougal, the Camas-Washougal Post-Record reported on May 19.
Bryan Shull and Michael Parsons, owners of Vancouver-based Trap Door Brewing, announced earlier this month that they will open a second location with a “family-friendly taproom, full bar with upscale drinks, local wine, limited cocktail menu and kitchen, and eventually a full-production brewery” at 1834 Main Street in Washougal this summer.
Owned by Washougal developer Wes Hickey, the building at the northeast corner of Main and 19th streets has housed two other breweries – Amnesia Brewing and Logsdon Farmhouse Ales — over the past decade.
Now, the owners of Trap Door Brewing are hoping the building, located in the heart of Washougal’s downtown, will help them build on the success they’ve found in Vancouver.
“We had tried twice to (open a location in) Ridgefield, and those projects weren’t working out for different reasons,” Shull said. “Then we came across this building, and the owner had a vision that aligned with ours. When (Hickey) expanded that place and put the brewery in there to lure Amnesia Brewing … he had a vision of what he wanted to do with Main Street, which is exactly what we did here, so it

USA, NE: Roc Hopper Brewing Company to launch in Syracuse on May 28
|
A Christmas gift almost ten years ago that turned into a hobby is culminating in a new business opening in Syracuse. Roc Hopper Brewing Company, owned by Ben and Katy Biehl, is opening a Taproom at 448 5th Street that will offer beer on tap, wine, cocktails and food. The grand opening is Saturday, May 28, from 2 to 10 p.m.
“Our focus will be on offering ice cold Roc Hopper beers (13 on tap), wine, cocktails, fantastic food and great customer service. We’ve hired bartenders and a chef. It’s a really fun group of people that are really excited about the vision Ben and I have for Roc Hopper. They are all driven to give our guests the best experience possible,” Katy Biehl said. “Chef Kelley Rawlings plans on having consistent weekly specials and changing up the menu often to keep it interesting and fun,” Biehl added.
Ben Biehl received a home brewers kit in 2013 for Christmas from his wife Katy. The couple says he has been hooked since, studying the science and art of brewing craft beer. In 2019, they were approached with an exclusive opportunity to make beer for Champions Run Golf Course in Omaha and Katy says

USA, CT: Veracious Brewing Company to close its doors at the end of May
|
It’s last call for craft beer lovers in Monroe, as Veracious Brewing Company will close its doors at the end of May, The Register Citizen reported on May 18.
The popular brewery, known for its dog-friendly atmosphere and its offerings such as 29 Pews will close on May 28 according to co-owner Mark Szamatulski. Maltose Express, Szamatulski’s other business, which sells brewing kits and hops for at-home brewing, is also closing.
Szamatulski said he would cherish the memories, but it was time to retire.
“We’ve been working for 32 years,” he said. “It’d be nice to have weekends off and I think we’ve put our time in.”
Szamatulski said another company was moving in and taking over the space. At first, he said he planned to look for a new location, but soon realized that wouldn’t be possible.
“They wanted the whole building, and we were looking for a place to buy, but we couldn’t find a place locally that we could get into,” he said. “And we made a financial deal with them to leave a little early. So it was fine for both us and them.”
He said he had looked into buying a local building to set up his operation again, but he

France: Growing conditions for wheat and barley crops fall sharply for a second straight week
|
Growing conditions for wheat and barley crops in France fell sharply for a second straight week, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on May 20, as a hot spell exacerbated drought in the European Union's biggest grain producer.
An estimated 73% of French soft wheat was in good or excellent condition by May 16, against 82% the previous week, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal crop report.
That followed a 7-percentage-point decline in the previous week and meant the rating was now below a year-earlier score of 79%, the office's data showed.
France has this week seen record temperatures for a month of May in some areas, further drying out soils that have received little rain this year.
The extremely dry weather has already caused severe damage to some grain crops and substantial rain will be needed by early June to avert losses in large producing regions, a technical institute said on Thursday.
Regional data in FranceAgriMer's cereal report suggested contrasts in growing conditions. In the Ile de France region around Paris, just 45% of the soft wheat crop was rated good/excellent, while in the Hauts de France, a key production region in the far north, the score was 77%.

Ukraine: Grain exports considerably down this month
|
Ukraine has exported 643,000 tonnes of grain since the start of May, considerably less than during the same period of last year when it sold 1.8 million tonnes abroad, the agriculture ministry said on May 19.
The volume has shrunk because of logistical problems since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24 and blocked Ukraine's Black sea ports, the main routes for Ukrainian grain exports.
The ministry said May's volume included about 617,000 tonnes of corn, 16,000 tonnes of wheat and 8,000 tonnes of barley. It did not say how the grain was delivered.
Senior agriculture officials have said Ukraine exported up to 300,000 tonnes of grain in March and 1.09 million tonnes in April. read more
Ukrainian traders managed to export up to 6 million tonnes of grain per month before Russia's invasion.
The ministry data showed that Ukraine has exported 46.51 million tonnes so far in the 2021/22 July-June season, versus 40.85 million a season earlier.
The ministry said 2021/22 export volumes included 18.54 million tonnes of wheat, 21.83 million tonnes of corn and 5.68 million tonnes of barley.

Australia & Costa Rica: Australia gains market access for barley exports to Costa Rica
|
On 28 February 2022, the Australian Government confirmed Australia has market access for barley exports to Costa Rica. This does not include malt exports, Austrade reported on May 19.
New market access, growing demand and improved business links led to an annual rise of 829% in Australian barley and malt exports to the Latin American region in 2021, according to ABS statistics. This included the first shipment of Australian barley to Mexico in January 2021.
Costa Rica is a small barley market. However, growth in imports since 2019 indicates demand is growing. In 2020, Costa Rica imported $54,000 of barley and $15.2 million of malt. Canada, the United States and Spain supplied all barley imports. The European Union and Argentina supplied most malt imports (Source: UNComtrade 2022).
In 2021, the value of Australian barley (including malt) exports to the world was a record A$3.1 billion. This was up 182% on 2020 (Source: ABS 2022).

World: Diageo releases its oldest Talisker single malt Scotch whisky
|
Diageo has released its oldest Talisker single malt Scotch whisky, Talisker 44-Year-Old: Forests of the Deep, The Drinks Business reported on May 19.
The rare whisky, which was “created as a reflection on the power and beauty of our oceans” has been nurtured for over four decades and finished in marine oak casks, with only 1,997 bottles being available globally.
Talisker 44-Year-Old: Forests of the Deep, has been inspired by an expedition led by Parley for the Oceans, Talisker’s partner in ocean conservation, to one of the world’s largest sea kelp forests near the Cape of Good Hope.
Cyril Gutsch, founder & CEO at Parley said: “Kelp forests are the planet’s underwater architects, and a powerful blue carbon force within the ecosystem that makes Earth habitable. They support biodiversity and sequester and store carbon dioxide more efficiently than the rainforests. This very special and rare edition of Talisker whisky is a tribute to the beauty and fragility of these great forests of the deep, and our collaborative mission to support their protection.”
Whisky expert and writer Dave Broom added: “This is a fascinating, bold, beautifully mature Talisker made in the old, bold, defiant style. Some whiskies become refined and elegant with time,
