Brewery news USA, WI: Torzala Brewing Co. eyeing June opening
When Jeff Torzala was a kid, his dad would always bring home Miller shirts, hats, signs, cups and mirrors. He was a carpenter for the brewing company, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on May 24.

"I probably looked like a little brewery representative," Torzala laughed.

With brewing in his blood, Torzala dreamed of opening his own brewery for decades.

"I've been chasing this dream for probably 20-plus years," he said.

His dream will become a reality in June, when he and his wife, Tricia, open Torzala Brewing Co. on the second floor of the Lincoln Warehouse, 2018 S. First St., in Bay View.

The brewery will focus on "traditional beers" to honor Milwaukee's deep brewing history.

"I want to make sure that us, in our space, are able to pay homage to that era and to our roots," said Torzala, a Mukwonago resident.

Offerings will include pale ales, pilsners, stouts, lagers, porters and a Munich-style helles, he said.

Some brews were designed off recipes from "days gone by" and styles that used to be prevalent in the area, Torzala explained. Others were based off what family and friends enjoy.

The taproom will initially offer about five beers on tap, then expand to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Ope Brewing Co. to open its doors in West Allis on May 27
It’s almost time for opening day at the Milwaukee area’s newest brewery, the Milwaukee Magazine reported on May 25.

Ope Brewing Co. will welcome the public into its big new space just east of downtown West Allis on Friday, May 27, the brewery announced.

The 12,650-square-foot brewery in the former hardware factory at 6751 W. National Ave. features a taproom with 300 seats, including several on cushy couches. Two spots for food trucks will keep the portable eats flowing along with the beer. (The truck lineup for the weekend was still coming together Wednesday.)

It won’t be ready for the opening Memorial Day weekend, but an eventual highlight of the Ope experience will be an expansive outdoor bar-patio space featuring a two volleyball courts, fire pits, cornhole and bocce. Well-behaved dogs are welcome inside and out.

Ope’s brewery features 16 taps with offerings crafted by co-founder and head brewer Kyle Ciske, formerly of The Explorium Brewpub. (The other co-owners are Adam Anders, who worked alongside Ciske at The Explorium, and homebrewer John Onopa.) The opening taplist is said to include lagers, IPAs, sours and hard seltzers, including collaborations with Milwaukee-area breweries Third Space, Eagle Park, New Barons and The Explorium, as well as ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Strangeways Brewing preparing to open its fourth location in Williamsburg
Strangeways Brewing, a Virginia-based microbrewery, is preparing to open its fourth location this summer at the Shops at High Street in Williamsburg, Wydaily reported on May 21.

At a recent Williamsburg City Council meeting held May 12 at the Stryker Center, the business received unanimous approval for a special use permit to operate a microbrewery at 1430-1103 High Street.

During the same vote, the city council also unanimously approved a text change amendment to allow a “‘micro-brewery, micro-distillery, micro-winery and/or micro-cidery, with a capacity of not more than 15,000 barrels per year’ with a special use permit in the Economic Development ED-2”.

“15,000 barrels is generally the industry standard,” said Williamsburg Interim Planning and Codes Compliance Director Erin Burke while briefing the city council. “It’s kind of the cut-off point from going from a micro-brewery, in this case, to a major distributor. That number is kind of seen universally, not just in Virginia but across the country. It doesn’t indicate that the applicant will be producing that much, that’s just the limitation that’s placed on the property.”

The Williamsburg location will offer a brewery tasting room on the corner of Richmond Road and High Street. The tasting room, according to Strangeways Brewing, “[W]ill be ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: The Dead Canary Brewing Co. preparing to open in Philipsburg before end of the year
A new nanobrewery is preparing to open before the end of the year in Philipsburg, setting up the possibility that a taproom returns to the borough for the first time in about eight decades, the Centre Daily Times reported on May 22.

The Dead Canary Brewing Co., 5 N. Front St., is eyeing a late summer or early fall opening, co-owner Brent Baskin said. The small-scale brewery is believed to be the first in the borough since the Philipsburg Brewing Co.

Baskin is launching the project alongside Philipsburg Revitalization Corporation board member Eric Kelmenson, the man who floated the idea of opening a brewery some 2 1/2 years ago.

“I’m the type of person who, if someone says something and I get excited about it, I’ll just say ‘Yes’ without thinking about it. That was kind of what happened at the beginning. Then I woke up the next day and was like, ‘Oh damn, what did I just agree to do?’ ” Baskin said. “But the more that I spent time with Eric and started meeting the cast of characters in Philipsburg ... the more excited and less anxious (I got). Everyone just wants a cool space, they want something ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Tucson’s Address Brewing closing up permanently on May 27
1702, also known as The Address Brewing, is permanently closing up the taps and shutting off the pizza ovens at 1702 E. Speedway Blvd. on Friday, May 27, the Tucson Foodie reported on May 23

The news came about on Facebook when the brewery shared the following:

“It is with a broken heart that I have to inform everyone that 1702 will be closing on May 27th. I do not have the words to express how much you all have meant to us over the last 15 years. So many friendships were formed and memories were made within these walls. You have made us so very happy and I truly hope we gave some of that happiness back to you dear friends. Thanks, Tucson, for everything. We love you all so much.”

With that being said, there is still time to stop on by and share a beer with the crew near the corner of Speedway and Campbell Avenue.

Although 1702 opened in 2007, it wasn’t until 2011 that they began brewing and selling their own beers, naming their brewery The Address Brewing.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Beer prices to see another significant increase as early as next month
The Association of Czech Beer Brewers has announced that the price of beer will see another significant increase in June due to the soaring costs of energy and barley, the Prague Morning reported on May 25.

According to the president of the association, Michal Voldřich, the higher costs of energy and raw materials such as malt and hops, will send up the price of beer by an average of 10 percent as of June.

Most breweries increased their prices in the spring and further increases can reportedly be expected at the end of the summer, when many breweries will see their contracts with energy suppliers expire, forcing them to accept less favorable tariffs.

Part of the cost pressure has been driven by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which is the world’s third-largest producer of barley. Global prices of the grain have risen by around 30% since the conflict began in February.

The Czech Republic has topped the per capita beer drinking ladder for 24 consecutive years. Czechs annually drink on average 143.3 litres of the golden brew per person.

Brewery news Australia & New Zealand: Brewers offering low- or non-alcohol beer or cider see increase in revenue last year
Non-alcoholic beer has been a boon for small brewers during a tough year, according to industry data, The Stuff.co.nz reported on May 22.

Brewing industry data software firm, Unleashed, conducted a study of 62 brewers in Australia and New Zealand found those offering a low- or non-alcohol beer or cider increased revenue by 14% last year, while businesses that did not, had revenue drop 4%.

Unleashed chief executive, Gareth Berry said the 18% difference in revenue was no accident because low- or non-alcohol beers became more popular, and more financially viable for brewers.

“This is by far the strongest growth sector of the market and consumer demand is about to take off,” Berry said.

Part of the financial success of the beer was that it was not subject to alcohol excise tax, which the industry widely expected to be increased in line with inflation on July 1.

If the excise tax rises alongside inflation at 6%, the tax on a 330 millilitre bottle of 5% strength beer would rise from 46 cents to 54c.

For 50 litre keg of American pale ale costing NZ$346, the excise tax is NZ$93.40, or 27% of its total value.

But low and alcohol-free beers were not cheaper than the full alcohol ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Good Drinks Australia strikes a deal to represent Molson Coors beer brands in Australia
The WA-based owner of beer brands including Gage Roads, Matso's and Atomic has struck a deal with Chicago-based Molson Coors to exclusively represent the Miller Chill, Miller Genuine Draught, Coors and Molson Canadian brands in Australia, the Business News Australia reported on May 24.

Good Drinks Australia expects to sell approximately 15 million litres annually of these brands, representing a material volume and earnings driver that will deliver an estimated $35-40 million in additional revenue and a further A$3-4 million in earnings.

This compares to FY21 sales of A$51.6 million and A$10.7 million in EBITDA for the company, which earlier this year opened its destination waterfront brewery Gage Roads Freo.

The company claims the Molson Coors brands complement its current product range, broadening the offering to include the significant premium international beer category of the alcohol market without competing directly with its existing brand portfolio.

The Molson Coors brands will be manufactured by Coopers Premium Beverages, with some brands being imported, and will not impact on Good Drinks’ production capacity.

An initial on-boarding of inventory and terms of trade will require additional working capital, to be funded via an extension of CDA's existing working capital facility.

"The Molson Coors partnership is a game-changer for our business ...More info on site

Barley news UK & Ukraine: UK in discussions over how to get grain out of Ukraine
Britain is in discussions with Ukraine about how to help get grain out of the country after Russia blocked its main sea ports, transport minister Grant Shapps said on May 24.

Shapps said he was very concerned about the issue, which has seen global food prices soar as Ukraine is unable to export nearly 25 million tonnes of grains, and met Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Oleksander Kubrakov last week.

"We were discussing details which I can’t go into but about how infrastructure could be in place to ensure the grain leaves," Shapps told Sky News.

"We're looking at all the different options ... there are lots of different potential ways to get grain and other goods out of the country," he said. "It's absolutely essential that we do, otherwise there could be a lot of hunger and indeed even famine."

Brewery news UK: UK on the brink of bottled beer shortage
The UK is on the brink of a bottled beer shortage amid glassware supply issues and soaring costs, The Sun reported on May 23.

A Scottish wholesaler has warned that drinkers could be facing a dry summer.

Glassware prices have already soared by 80% over the past year, and small- and mid-sized breweries are expected to bear the brunt of the problems.

Julie Dunn, operations director at one of Scotland's largest wholesalers, Dunns Food and Drinks, said: "It won't be long before the glassware shortages hits UK consumers.

"Our wine and spirits suppliers from around the globe are facing ongoing struggles that will have a knock-on effect.

"As a result, there could be less variety in the bottled beers we see on UK shelves."

She said some breweries may be forced to produce their beer in cans as a temporary measure to ensure they can continue production.

Others could ramp up prices in an effort to cope, putting more pressure on family finances as millions are already grappling with a cost of living crisis.

Beer is the most popular type of alcohol sold in the UK, with more than £7.1billion spent on the stuff in 2020.

At-home consumption has increased in recent years, with more than 53% of purchases ...More info on site

Brewery news Latin America: Brewers delivering cold beer on demand to consumers even as bars reopen
With COVID-19 lockdowns normalising home delivery of everything from fast food to aspirin, brewers are tapping into a lucrative new sales format - delivering cold beer on demand to consumers still gathering at home with friends even as bars reopen, Reuters reported on May 23.

For Brazilian Rafael Mazaia, it is cheaper to order beers for delivery to his home than to drive to the supermarket to pick up a pack and risk them being tepid when he returns.

"There is no supermarket near my house, I'm too lazy to go to the market and the drink is not completely cold there, so it is better to order," the 24-year-old investment analyst in the Sao Paulo region said.

The world's largest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev saw orders at its cold beer service Ze Delivery, launched in its second-largest market Brazil in 2016, explode during the pandemic from 1.5 million in 2019 to 62 million last year.

In Mexico, its rival Heineken last year launched delivery service GLUP, also focused on direct-to-consumer cold beer.

Latin America has proved a natural fit for the format, with consumers typically having limited refrigeration capacity and a shared love of gathering for events like soccer matches - a particular draw this ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: AB InBev workers set to hold a series of strikes in June
Workers for the beer giant AB InBev are set to hold a series of strikes in June that could lead to beer shortages across the UK this summer, The Drinks Business reported on May 23.

The world’s biggest brewer, which owns brands including Budweiser, Stella Artois, Becks, Boddingtons and Export Pale Ale, will see a total of 225 GMB members stop working at its Samlesbury site, near Preston after pleas for pay increases have failed to be agreed.

After months of discussion with AB InBev which has tabled a full and final offer of a 3% increase for 2022 and 3% for 2023 with increases in overtime rates, workers have noted that, with the cost-of-living crises and inflation at 11.1%, the offer amounts to a massive pay cut in real terms.

Stephen Boden, GMB organiser, said: “The last thing these workers want to do is jeopardise beer supplies just as the hot weather kicks in. But they’ve been pushed into this by bosses essentially slashing their wages during a cost of living crisis. Do they really expect loyal workers to swallow a real terms pay cut? Anyone fancying a pint Budweiser, Stella Artois, Becks, Boddingtons or Export Pale Ale ...More info on site
