Brewery news USA: Most beer drinkers have not changed their buying habits despite accelerating inflation – Molson Coors
As consumers turn to cheaper-priced offerings in a bid to save money as inflation accelerates, the head of Molson Coors Beverage said so far, most beer drinkers have not changed their buying habits.

Gavin Hattersley, CEO of the alcohol giant behind Coors Pure Organic Light Beer and Blue Moon, said in many cases people are choosing to forgo a night out and instead purchase a higher-end brew to enjoy at home.

“We haven’t seen [a shift down to lower-price beers] yet,” Hattersley said in an interview after addressing a Chicago business executive group in late May. “It wouldn’t surprise me if it happens as inflation, gas prices and things start doing really bad. But we haven’t seen it.”

The divergence stands in sharp contrast to comments made last month by private-label manufacturer TreeHouse Foods and retail juggernaut Walmart.

Walmart told analysts that consumers are moving from brand names to private label substitutes in deli, lunch meat, bacon and dairy. TreeHouse Foods’ CEO Steve Oakland noted around the same time that consumers are looking to private label “as they manage a higher cost macro environment and seek better value.”

The strength in beer is a much-needed reprieve for many of the category’s iconic brands. For ...More info on site

The overall industry-wide beer volumes decreased by approximately 7.9% in the quarter versus the prior year, with Waterloo Brewing's total volume of products sold decreasing by 5.7% in the quarter versus the prior year - indicating that the company continues to grow market share within Ontario. Despite industry trends, Waterloo Brewing's portfolio continues to outperform competition at both LCBO and grocery stores.

Waterloo Brewing's premium better-for-you products continue to outpace the industry; LandShark® branded sales volume increased 13.3% during the first quarter versus the prior ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Fanatic Brewing Company gearing up for its second location in Knoxville
Ever since he began tinkering with his own home-brewed beer in 1978, Fanatic Brewing Company founder Marty Velas’ passion for and expertise in the brewing arts have taken him all over the world — from Germany to Japan, from California to Czechoslovakia and much more, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported on June 2.

Highly sought after as an engineer, consultant, judge and educator, Velas holds multiple international and national awards and has trained more than 200 successful brewers. He started Fanatic Brewing Company on Central Avenue seven years ago.

And now he’s gearing up for his latest growth spurt — Fanatic’s second location, Fanbase West, at West Town Mall.

“We’re shooting for June 1. I’ve got some items that I want to use for the buildout — we want it to be perfect. But definitely sometime in June.

“The food court was remade three years ago to include a craft beer pub. We’re taking over the operations of that; they’re confident that we can make a go of it, as are we. The mall has been re-energized. It’s doing much better than it was pre-pandemic.”

Velas originally came to East Tennessee in 1994 on a consulting job.

“I was setting up breweries all over the world. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Ghostfish Brewing’s new brewery to focus on meeting on growing demand for Ghostfish beers east of the Mississippi River
To help meet the demand for its beers on the opposite coast, Ghostfish Brewing recently announced its plans to open a brewery in New York, about 60 miles west of Buffalo. The new brewery will focus on meeting the growing demand for Ghostfish beers east of the Mississippi River, the Washington Beer Blog reported on June 1.

In Seattle, Ghostfish Brewing currently produces beer at near max capacity, doing all it can to meet demand. That’s a problem unto itself, one the company hopes to remedy in the near future. Another problem, if you consider this a problem at all, the company’s beers have gained popularity with beer drinkers 3,000 miles away in places like New York and Massachusetts.

The vast majority of Washington-brewed beers never find their way beyond the state’s borders. Ghostfish Brewing is uncommon in that regard. Its gluten-free beers are available in nearly 20 states across the country. Away from the taproom in Seattle, only about 20%-30% of its beer stays in Washington. In fact, Massachusetts is poised to overtake Oregon as the second-largest consumer of Ghostfish beers.

Some breweries may consider contract brewing a solution to such a logistical problem, finding another brewery to produce beers on its ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & Japan: Great Dane Brewing to open production brewery in Japan
Madison, Wisconsin-based Great Dane Brewing is going global, NBC15 reported on June 2.

The brewery announced on June 2 that after planning for several years, it will finally be making a production brewery and tasting room in Japan.

The brewery will be located in Akiu Onsen, Sendai, which is about two hours north of Tokyo. It will focus on canned and bottled beers that will be sold throughout the country, co-founder and brewmaster Rob LoBreglio explained.

“This is a dream come true,” LoBreglio said. “I get to work alongside some great people and close friends who are so dedicated to strengthening the craft beer industry in Japan. Along with featuring current Great Dane beers, we plan to create a range of new beers. We’re going to have a lot of fun with it and will certainly bring some of those recipes to Wisconsin.”

A Great Dane Brewing business in Japan has been a long time coming, as LoBreglio reminisced about visiting Japan regularly for several years and meeting Tetsuya Kiyosawa in the mid ‘90s through his brother. He said Kiyosawa was passionate about joining the craft beer industry, which was not hugely popular at the time, and Kiyosawa then trained under LoBreglio for two ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Xicha Brewing Company to open second location in Eugene’s South Hills
What’s believed to be Oregon’s sole LatinX-owned brewery is expanding, KLCC reported on May 31.

Since 2017, Xicha Brewing Company has run a location in West Salem.

Chef and owner Ricardo Antunez says now he will open a second location in Eugene’s South Hills, next to Provisions and Albertson’s on 32nd Avenue.

“We’re going to be able to serve some tacos, some beer, and some really good margaritas as well. Definitely having neighbors like Provisions will be a benefit for us, I think the crowd that they draw, is similar to the crowd that we will hopefully be drawing as well. It’ll just be a very vibrant corner for South Eugene.”

Antunez says the original goal of opening in July is a “moving target” given supply chain disruptions. But when Xicha Brewing opens to customers, the Eugene pub will accommodate 35-40 people inside, with about the same number out on the patio space.

The Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission does not track race or ethnicity with brewery owners, but it’s believed Xicha Brewing is the first and only LatinX run brewery in the state.

Brewery news USA, KS: Tor Brewing hopes to open in Wichita by early September
Back in 2017, Dan Norton quit his longtime job as head brewer at River City Brewing Company so he could open his own downtown brewery. He and his wife, Becky, have since grown a big following at Nortons, 125 N. St. Francis, The Wichita Eagle reported on May 31.

Now, one of Norton’s brewers — Aaron Hill — is about to do the same thing. And he has the support of his boss.

Hill, who has been brewing beer with Norton since his opening day in 2018, will soon open his own downtown brewery. He’s calling it Tor Brewing, and it will take over the former Hungry Heart/ Sorrel’s spot at 222 S. Commerce, which is near the northeast corner of Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita.

Hill said he hopes to have the brewery open in early September. Tor, he said, is the Olde English word for “hill,” his last name.

The new brewery will focus on beer but will also have a limited menu featuring sandwiches and the like. He may also invite food trucks to set up outside, he said.

He’s purchased River City’s old brewing equipment, Hill said, and he plans to use it to keep 10 of his ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Van Lieus Brewing Company coming soon to Perkasie
Van Lieus Brewing Company is coming soon to Perkasie, PA. The brewery will be opening at 211 West Walnut Street and has an ETA of mid-summer to open, the Breweries in PA (BIPA) reported on May 31.

BIPA recently spoke with co-owner and brewer Galen Barr about the new brewery and what beer fans can expect.

What’s in the name Van Lieus? Galen says that it’s pronounced Van LOSE, and is the name of the road he grew up on and has been homebrewing at since 2017.

BIPA: What stage are you currently in?

Galen: We have everything delivered, as far as the equipment goes. It’s not hooked up, but we will be doing all of that in the next few weeks. Our cold box is in for the beer, our taps are installed, and the bar is built. We also have all of our licensing down as well.

BIPA: How did you become initially interested in craft beer? Who is all involved in the brewery?

Galen: I have been homebrewing since 2017 in the house I grew up in, on a road called Van Lieus. I initially started with an extract kit, and my dad made wine. I also was able to brew on ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NS: Good Robot Brewing moving to new facility in Elmsdale
Good Robot Brewing has announced that it has stopped beer production at its original location on Robie Street in Halifax, and has dismantled the brewhouse to move it to a new facility in Elmsdale, a community approximately 20 minutes north of Halifax, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 31.

First announced last autumn, the new Good Robot brewery will be a much larger and more efficient operation, as explained in the announcement:

With lots of behind the scenes support, the Elmsdale facility will feature an automated mash filter. Made in the United States, this device will be the first of its kind in craft brewing production in Canada. New equipment will also include a tunnel pasteurizer, industrial centrifuge, and modernized canning line.

“Our efficiency of converting grain to starch will be increased from 75% to 99%,” says marketing manager Lindsey Davidson. “It’s less waste while creating more beer so we’ll be able to produce a diversity of beer unlike anywhere else in Canada at the craft scale.”

The expansion to Elmsdale will also include a retail space and beer garden, as well as co-packaging services to allow other breweries to take advantage of the new technology. Co-founder Joshua Counsil says, “we want to ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: 33 Acres Brewing Company finds its way into Calgary craft beer market
Popular Vancouver brewery 33 Acres Brewing Company has found its way into the Calgary craft beer market — and just in time for summer, the Avenue Calgary reported on May 31.

Opened on May 12 and located in The District at Beltline, the new 33 Acres currently follows many of the same recipes as its Vancouver counterpart, but the Calgary brewing team also plans to use local ingredients to create a variety of experimental and seasonal brews.

Some of the brewery’s best-loved choices include the Fluffy Cloud IPA (a hazy beer with citrusy and pine notes) and the 33 Acres of Sunshine (a lighter, blanche-style brew with a hint of orange and anise). The beers here are served in 12 oz, 16 oz or extra-big 24 oz pints, so you can taste something new or go all in on something you already love. There’s also a small bar menu with cocktails and natural wines, available by the bottle.

As for food, 33 Acres focuses on using local products to create tasty snacks. Sourdough from Sidewalk Citizen is featured in several of the menu’s sandwich options, including avocado toast with goat cheese, lemon and chilis, and cheese toast with gochujang ketchup. Smaller local snacks ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Earth Bread & Brewery to close down
Earth Bread & Brewery, the Mount Airy brewpub that hewed to a mission of sustainability, will close after July 1, just shy of its 14th anniversary, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on June 1.

“It makes us sad, but the challenges and struggles of the past 2½ years have caught up with Earth,” owners and spouses Tom Baker and Peggy Zwerver announced Tuesday. “It’s been an incredible ride for us, and we don’t wish to dwell on the hard times of the pandemic.”

“People just aren’t coming out,” Baker said in a phone interview. “The closing has been kind of a long time coming. I think I’m trying to hold on, hoping that things would improve. But it is just not happening.” The summer season typically is the slow time, he said.

The couple plans to devote more time to Bar Hygge and its Brewery Techne in Francisville, where they are partners with Stew and Julie Keener. Bar Hygge is doing well, Baker said.

Earth opened in 2008 featuring a menu of flatbread pizzas from a hand-built wood-burning oven and beers from a modest system. It was the couple’s next chapter after Heavyweight Brewing, which they had run for six years in Ocean Township, N.J. ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: All four major brewers to hike prices in October
Sapporo Breweries Ltd. said on June 2 that it will raise the shipment prices of a total of 121 beer and canned "chuhai" alcoholic beverages, including its mainstay Black Label beer on Oct. 1, JiJi Press reported.

Three other major Japanese beer makers - Kirin Brewery Co., Asahi Breweries Ltd. and Suntory Beer Ltd. - have already announced their plans to raise prices on the same day.

Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia to increase prices of some of its products from July
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd said it will increase the prices of some of its products from July 1 due to rising input costs, The Edge Markets reported on June 2.

In a document sighted by The Edge, Carlsberg said that despite its cost-mitigation efforts, the group had to “adjust” the prices of the products because of the increasing input costs worsened by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“We wish to inform you that due to the unprecedented escalation in input costs, which is further exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, we have taken the decision to implement price adjustments for a selection of our products,” the brewer said.

The new prices for the group’s beer, stout and cider will take effect from July 1, said Carlsberg, adding that retail selling price remains at the sole discretion of the retailers.

“Despite our best efforts to mitigate this price adjustment with several cost control measures, including absorbing partial input costs, we are unable to sustain the increasing cost inflation,” said Carlsberg.

The brewer said it is cognizant that a price adjustment in the current tough environment is a challenge for all parties, and has therefore limited the price hike to selected brands and SKUs (stock-keeping units).

Shares in Carlsberg ended 20 ...More info on site
