Hops news USA, WA: Craft beer drives thirst for hops
More than 84.6 million pounds of hops were grown in Washington in 2021, a 14.1% increase over 2020, the Journal of Business reported.

“We were all kind of surprised to see a record crop last year, after the spring heat dome, which hit when the vines were vulnerable,” said Maggie Elliot, science and communications director for the Hop Growers of Washington.

A historic heat wave enveloped the Northwest in June 2021, with temperatures topping 115 degrees, threatening to stunt the crop.

Fortunately, record snowfall in the Cascade Mountains filled the Yakima reservoirs in early June, allowing growers to nurture hops using precise irrigation practices and reducing the impact from the heat wave.

“The aroma varieties took the hardest hit from the heat,” Elliot said.

Aroma hop varieties aren’t as heat tolerant as the alpha varieties, she explained.

Aroma and alpha are the two kinds used to brew beer.

Alpha varieties provide the distinctive bitter bite to beer. Alpha varieties are often processed into extracts used by major brewers.

Aroma varieties contribute to the aromatic depth that craft brewers use to create unique flavor profiles. Aroma hops are often added to the beer near the end of the boiling process, providing the beer with a final layer of finish. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Olde Salem Brewing Company opens its doors in downtown Roanoke
Olde Salem Brewing Company has opened its doors for the first time in downtown Roanoke. However, the building is not new as it was the former home of Deschutes Brewery’s Tasting Room, WDBJ reported on June 10.

The plan to open a second location had been ongoing for some time but the opportunity hadn’t presented itself until Deschutes Brewery announced in October 2021 it would be closing due to the pandemic.

Olde Salem Brewing Company said construction is still happening in the backroom, as they plan to build a stage in hopes of having live music playing by the end of summer.

General Manager Cameron Weeks said he is happy to finally welcome customers inside after months of hard work and planning.

“It was fantastic. I mean having people ready to go after the hard few weeks to prepare and getting everything done. It was a lot of just weight lifted off the shoulders when we got those doors open.”

You Can visit Olde Salem in downtown Roanoke from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Brewery news USA, OH: Guernsey Brewhouse to open in Cambridge in mid-July
Trail Ale is one of many craft ales and India pale ales (IPAs) that will be named after Guernsey County attractions at the Guernsey Brewhouse in Cambridge.

The family-owned business operated by Shawn Long, his wife Aimee, and their three sons Zack, Spencer and Parker, will open in mid-July at 4550 Bloomfield Road. It will be the 400th brewery to open in Ohio, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Shawn said there would be something for everybody. The menu will consist of craft ales and lagers, wheat beers, a red raspberry sour, several IPAs, stouts and porters along with seasonal drinks and others.

Zach will be taking care of security and IT while Spencer will help as an extra employee in the taproom. Parker is apprenticing with his father in brewing.

According to Aimee, this is also Parker's dream and he would probably be the one running the brewery in the future. "They are all excited. They all love craft beer," she said.

Shawn started brewing as a hobby 17 years ago.

"It escalated from there and I started learning more techniques on brewing and fell in love with it," said Shawn, who also previously worked for another local brewery.

Brewery news USA, GA: Atlanta Brewing Company to open new state-of-the-art brewery sometime before Christmas
Sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas 2022, and “certainly before the ball drops on New Year’s Eve,” Atlanta Brewing Company will open a new, state-of-the-art brewery in a yet-to-be-disclosed location, CEO Alton Shields told What Now Atlanta in a telephone interview on June 8.

The craft beer purveyor is also planning to open two satellite taprooms that will “bookend the Atlanta BeltLine,” Shields said.

As Atlanta Brewing Company gears up to begin construction on its new brewery and taproom, the company’s existing location, at 2323 Defoor Hills Rd NW., will close its doors to the public come July 3, 2022. Atlanta Brewing’s lease doesn’t expire on its current space of 15 years until January 31, 2023, but the landlord is letting the tenant leave early, according to Shields. “Our new landlord wanted to double the rent,” Shields said. “When you consider the increase in rent and a nearly million dollar investment that would be needed to upgrade our brewing systems if we stayed, relocating is a no-brainer.”

In its new home, which Shields said would be revealed in the next few weeks, Atlanta Brewing Company will operate out of nearly half the space at 9,000 square feet with a renewed focus on the customer. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Sturdy Shelter Brewing expected to open later this summer
Sturdy Shelter Brewing, a new Batavia brewery expected to open later in the summer, got its name from the Bible verse “a faithful friend is a sturdy shelter: he that has found one has found a treasure”, the Shaw Local reported on June 10.

Owner Frank Mercadante said that verse also served as a template for his approach to running the brewery.

“We wanted to be a place where people could gather,” Mercadante said. “We had discussed so many names, and we finally came to the conclusion of let’s call it ‘Sturdy Shelter.’

“It’s kind of a refuge for people,” he said.

Mercadante is no stranger to scripture, having run the St. Charles-based Catholic youth-ministry nonprofit Cultivation Ministries since its founding in the early 90s. The organization has provided consulting, training and other services to over 120 dioceses across the country.

Though sampling diverse beers had been a lifelong passion, the commitment of running the nonprofit meant that Mercadante’s interest in brewing wouldn’t be explored for some time.

“My wife for my 40th birthday bought me a little home brewing kit,” he said. “That’s because I always enjoyed tasting different beers when I went out to dinner.

“I had some successes and failures early on, but stuck ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Howard Street Brewing Company debuts in Roger Park
Rogers Park’s only brewery has debuted on Howard Street after four years of working to bring a craft beer spot to the neighborhood, the Block Club Chicago reported on June 10.

Howard Street Brewing Company opened May 26 at 1617 W. Howard St. It was founded by Chuck Patella, a home brewer for 10 years and husband of Shannon O’Neill, the co-artistic director of neighboring Factory Theater.

The brewery’s storefront was previously vacant and acting as a rehearsal space of sorts for Factory Theater. Patella’s band played a show in the space and he realized it would make a great — if small — brewery.

“I started bringing beers to [Factory Theater’s] opening parties,” Patella said. “It got to the point where the kegs were empty when we’d go home. It made sense to open here. I get to serve beer and fill a need.”

The brewery, which bills itself as Chicago’s northernmost beer producer, might also be one of the city’s smallest.

Howard Street Brewing has a one-barrel system, which isn’t much bigger than a lot of at-home setups, Patella said. The small system has its perks: It can allow for greater experimentation without having to produce mass quantities of beer.

“The benefit is we ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Great Notion Brewing opening its fourth Portland-area location
Great Notion Brewing, the innovative brewery whose hazy IPAs and culinary-inspired stouts and sours became immensely popular after it burst onto the Portland beer scene eight years ago, is opening its fourth Portland-area location, this one on Southeast Division Street in the Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood, the Oregon Live reported on June 13.

The brewery, which also has two taprooms in Seattle, plans a multi-phase opening in the former Ether Shoes building, which is at Division Street and Southeast 21st Avenue. The historic neighborhood includes numerous retail, dining and entertainment options, with Crisp Salads and Spielman Bagels on either side of the new taproom, and Scottie’s Pizza, Nuestra Cocina and New Seasons Market also nearby.

A beer garden will open first on June 24, with hours to be determined from Thursdays through Sundays. Later in summer, Great Notion plans to be open seven days a week, and construction on the taproom, at 2105 S.E. Division St., will start later in the year.

“The goal is to just get something up and running and iterate from there,” said Great Notion co-founder Paul Reiter said. “Picture a fun outdoorsy vibe with a food truck (TBA), picnic tables, pop-up tent, etc.”

The 2,400-square-foot location will have Great Notion’s beers ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: The Hyde Park Brewing Company closing after more than 25 years in business
The Hyde Park Brewing Company, a town mainstay for more than 25 years, is closing, according to a company Facebook post, the Daily Freeman reported on June 14.

“It is with sincere gratitude and appreciation for our patrons and business associates to announce that after 27 years in business at the Hyde Park Brewing Company, we have come down to our final days,” the post said.

BrewPub will be closing its doors on at the 4076 Albany Post Road location on Saturday, June 18.

“Our time in the Hyde Park community has been a wonderful journey,” the post said. “We have always been proud to provide friendly service and hospitality to our customers throughout the years.”

“When the doors first opened in 1996 we never imagined what it would grow into today!,” the post read. “The people we have met, the families we have served and the staff that have become family, together with our community support has kept us going.”

The Facebook posting said that business has suffered in the last two years.

“What was also unimaginable was the last two years, the business environment is a very different one and for that, sadly, it was unsustainable,” the posting said.

The company operated the Skytop Steakhouse ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Legal Remedy Brewing Co. shutters brewery and taproom in Rock Hill
Legal Remedy Brewing Co. has made the tough call to shutter its brewery and taproom in the Riverwalk development in Rock Hill, the Charlotte Business Journal reported on June 14.

That 5,800-square-foot space opened in August 2020, during the height of the pandemic. It was located at 1157 Herrons Ferry Road.

It was part of the roughly 1,000-acre, master-planned development’s Town Center.

“In complete transparency, we have closed, relaunched and rebranded LRB Riverwalk. We’ve adjusted, pivoted and tried to adapt to continuing challenges, some inevitable. To say there were growing pains of a new business would be putting it lightly,” the brewery posted on Instagram last night.

Legal Remedy invested roughly $3 million into the venture.

The brewery will shift its focus back to its original brewpub and its beers — many of which have legal-themed names. There’s 24 taps with options such as the Pro Bono Vanilla Porter, Alibi Pale Ale, Lawdog Lager and the Barrister Bitter. The menu is built around pub fare and house-cured and -smoked meats, as well as locally fueled small plates.

That 10,000-plus-square-foot location is at 129 Oakland Ave. in Rock Hill. It opened in 2015.

UK’s barley exports continue, with April totalling 70.7 thousand tonnes, AHDB reported on June 14. This brings season-to-date exports to 690.3 thousand tonnes.

To reach the full season forecast of 765.0 thousand tonnes, May and June would need to see an average monthly pace of 37.3 thousand. This looks significantly below the 3-year average of 54.3 thousand tonnes for May and 51.7 thousand for June, the agriculture board said.

With the domestic balance of barley already very tight this season will be the smallest balance forecast since 2007/08, AHDB added.

Brewery news Belgium: Belgian beer makers nervous about higher production costs and supply chain problems
Higher production costs and supply chain problems are putting Belgian beer makers on the brink of a nervous breakdown, as the global economic downturn takes its toll, Euronews reported on June 14.

Companies like the historic Huyghe brewery in Flanders, for example, are starting to run out of bottles.

The lifeline, for now, is the accumulated stocks of bottles that were purchased from a supplier company in Russia. These days, supply has been interrupted and finding alternative suppliers with the capacity to respond in Europe is anything but easy due to the strong concentration that has occurred in the industry in recent years.

According to Alain de Laet, the company's executive director, it only has stocks to last until September.

"Essentially we lack the 33 centilitre APO bottles. I know some producers who work with Steinie bottles and for several of these producers the lack of bottles is also becoming a problem," de Laet told Euronews.

"For us, it is a big problem, because we have an export volume of 87%, which means that the bottles are not returned."

He added that the situation has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 lockdowns in China, which have caused orders to plummet. The country is the brewer's second international ...More info on site

Brewery news Estonia: Price increases could reach beer this fall
Food prices in Estonia have risen rapidly in recent months, but low-alcohol beverages have thus far been spared from a more rapid increase. Energy and cereal price increases will nonetheless reach beer prices this fall, potentially increasing them by up to half, ERR reported on June 14.

Since the reduction of the alcohol excise duty rate in summer 2019, the average price of a half-litre bottle of beer has remained below €1.50. According to Estonian Institute of Economic Research (EKI) data, low-alcohol beer prices fell by 0.7 last year, while the price of strong beer went up 0.6 percent. The average price of a bottle of beer together with bottle deposit and VAT stood at €1.43 in 2020 and €1.44 last year.

According to EKI director Marje Josing, there have been no major changes in trends thus far this year, and prices currently remain stable.

"It's still not worth going to Latvia, as the difference in excise duty rates is minimal and it doesn't pay off economically," Josing explained, referring to the widespread practice from previous years of driving to Latvia to stock up on cheaper alcohol there. "Tourists have not begun arriving yet and they aren't yet taking alcohol with them either. ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation to install a new Chibuku Super plant at its Southerton Brewery
Delta Corporation Limited is expected to maintain its growth trajectory in the sorghum beer segment as the beverages giant is looking at installing a new Chibuku Super plant at its Southerton Brewery, The Herald reported on June 9.

This will help enhance production efficiencies and offset the adverse impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which among others, resulted in supply chain disruptions with limited access to rural markets experienced during the year to March 31, 2022.

Already, the existing Chibuku Super lines are producing to capacity.

“A new Chibuku Super plant to be installed at the Southerton brewery is on order,” said chairman Stanford Moyo in a performance update for the year.

During the year, sorghum beer volume in Zimbabwe grew by 43 percent on improved product supply, market pull and the resurgence of returnable scud bottles.

The Zimbabwean economy registered growth in real Gross Domestic Product during 2021, driven by the improved cereals harvest, the cyclical rebound in mineral prices and buoyant housing construction and infrastructure projects together with a surge in diaspora remittances which helped improved disposable incomes.

Additionally, the business sector benefited from the convenience of the multi-currency trading environment and the higher spending velocity of the local currency as consumers sought to mitigate ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Keroche Breweries shut down by Kenya Revenue Authority once again
Keroche Breweries CEO Tabitha Karanja has announced that the company has again been shut down by the Kenya Revenue Authority, the Pulse Live reported on June 14.

In a press conference on June 14, Ms Karanja said that KRA accused the company of violating an earlier agreement to pay tax arrears.

She added that more than 400 workers will be affected by the closure and beer worth Sh350 million could go to waste.

The company has however denied that it defaulted on the tax repayment plan that had been agreed upon.

Earlier in March, Keroche Breweries struck a deal with KRA allowing it to reopen after closure due to tax arrears.

In the agreement, Keroche committed to paying Sh957 million in two years.

The deal saved the company which owes in excess of Sh22 billion in tax arrears from permanently shutting down.

KRA also lifted a notice sent to 36 banks cautioning them against lending the breweries money.

Keroche CEO Tabitha Karanja had raised concern that the firm was on the verge of sending home over 250 workers and pouring alcohol worth over Sh512 million that is currently stored in tanks.

“The recent closure by KRA has drained all our resources and unfortunately if nothing is done in the ...More info on site
