Brewery news USA, CT: Athletic Brewing Company starts production at its new Milford facility
Athletic Brewing Company, one of the country's largest non-alcoholic beer producers, officially started production at its 150,000 square foot Milford facility on June 17, the Patch reported.

"Our product is health positive, it's better for you," Co-founder Bill Shufelt said at a ribbon cutting ceremony. "Alcoholism is a huge problem in this country, and we saw a path to improving tens of millions of lives not only here, but globally."

Shufelt and co-founder John Walker created the company in 2017 after they found other non-alcoholic beers lacking in flavor and popularity.

Athletic Brewing has experienced explosive growth over the past five years. It went from producing 12,000 cases of beer in 2018 to 1.4 million in 2021. It's distributed in 46 states, with plans to expand to the remaining four in the next few months, Shufelt said.

The Milford facility will eventually be able to produce 6 million cases annually. The company has a small 10,000 square foot operation in Stratford and an 80,000 square foot facility in San Diego.

The brewery secured funding with the help of the Connecticut Innovations Angel Investment program.

"It's five o'clock somewhere, we don't have to say that anymore," Gov. Ned Lamont said at the ribbon cutting. "This is Athletic ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Outsider Brewing Co. to become Woodfin’s newest brewery
Roughly halfway between Zillicoah Beer Co. and Riverside Rhapsody Beer Co. sits Woodfin’s newest brewery, Outsider Brewing Co., 939 Riverside Drive, the Mountain Express reported on June 22.

Co-founders Kaeleigh McCauley and Julian Arena are aiming for a July opening. No strangers to the beer industry, the pair met in 2018 in Charlotte while McCauley was working as a sales representative for Birdsong Brewing and Arena was the head brewer for D9 Brewing Co.

True to its name, Outsider will offer patrons an experience unlike anything the local craft beverage industry has seen. Similar to a working art studio where patrons can see glass blown or pottery thrown, people who come to the Woodfin brewery will be able to watch Arena brew in transparent vessels, removing the barriers inherent with stainless steel tanks.

“There’s definitely a need in the area for people to engage with the brewing process a little bit more,” says Arena, who’s been homebrewing since high school. “In lieu of having a giant production facility, we kind of switched gears and now we have the smallest production facility you can imagine but also the most up-close-and personal-experience you can have.”

The co-founders were inspired to start Outsider after McCauley’s experiences selling ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Crafted Culture Brewing to move to another location in downtown Columbus
According to Anthony “Sizzle” Perry, owner of Crafted Culture Brewing, the popular brewery has secured a brand-new home in downtown Columbus, 614NOW reported on June 21.

Perry said Crafted Culture will be moving their brewery to 189 E. Main St.

Crafted Culture–the first Black-owned craft brewery in Central Ohio–opened early in 2021 in Gahanna, before leaving the location earlier this year. A video statement posted to Crafted Culture’s Instagram account in February stated that the goal of the move was to find a building that better served the brewery’s needs.

According to Perry, that’s exactly what Crafted Culture has found in the new nearly 4,000 square foot space.

“The new location is going to be a more accurate representation of what Crafted Culture was designed to be,” he said. “It’s going to be everything I did growing up in the 80’s and 90’s outside with my brothers, it’s going to be the cookouts, the family reunions, all of that in one building.”

As the space is a new building, Crafted Culture doesn’t have an official opening dated lined up yet.

“It’s going to take a little bit of time,” Perry said, “But it’s going to be worth it.”

Brewery news Canada, NS: New Scotland Brewing opens expanded location in Dartmouth
Four years after the launch of its original location in downtown Dartmouth, New Scotland Brewing Co. has announced the opening of an expansion that brings together several compatible businesses under one roof, the Canadian Beer News reported on June 20.

In addition to featuring a larger taproom, live music venue, and rooftop patio, the space is also the new home of the brewery’s sibling New Scotland Clothing Co., plus restaurant Root Down Scullery from chefs Lawrence Deneau and Ryan Wolfe, and a new location for Timber Lounge Axe Throwing.

In a recent interview with Huddle Today, New Scotland co-owner describes the combination of businesses as “a little adult playland.” He also thanks Stone Pizza for providing food for the original brewery taproom over the past few years, and notes that they have now entered a similar arrangement with nearby Brightwood Brewery.

New Scotland Brewing Co. and its partner businesses can be found at 16 Portland Street in Dartmouth.

Brewery news USA, MO: Calibration Brewery selling its building in North Kansas City
In a statement put out via their Facebook page, Calibration Brewery in North Kansas City, announced they will be selling their building, the Flatland KC reported on June 20.

Calibration has been a mainstay in the local beer scene since opening in 2016. The post simply stated they’d be selling the building and “moving on to new opportunities.” Only time will tell what these new opportunities are.

In the meantime, Calibration is throwing one last party on Saturday, June 25. The farewell bash will feature live music, food and drink specials, and giveaways. This is your opportunity to say your goodbyes to a spot that’s served the community well for the past six years.

Brewery news USA, NM: Toltec Brewing closes after four years in business
In four years, Toltec Brewing was able to make its mark in Albuquerque, the Albuquerque Journal reported on June 19.

That run came to an end on Thursday, June 16.

The brewery, located at 10250 Cottonwood Park NW, is permanently closed.

Owners Robert and Diana Navarette posted a letter on the door on Thursday.

“It is with much consideration and sincere regret that we at Toltec have decided to close our doors,” the owners stated in the letter. “We want to thank all of your for your support and patronage over the past 5 years. We truly appreciate all you have endured with us through our ups and downs and the COVID pandemic.”

Toltec was able to be the place for a few award-winning brews since its opening in May 2018. It picked up bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival in 2019 for the Shaman Stout and then in 2020 for Cactus Warrior.

It was also home to some award-winning cuisine.

Toltec’s former executive chef, David Ruiz, created the Toltec Royale from a mix of beef brisket and chopped cremini mushrooms. The combination worked well enough to earn a win at the 2018 James Beard Foundation Blended Burger Project, a competition intended to reduce our ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Brewdog approached Heineken about partial sale - BBC
Brewdog's CEO James Watt was involved in preliminary discussions about a potential sale of part of the firm to rivals Heineken, the BBC has learned.

Leaked emails from 2018 reveal he told Heineken he was "open to being more pragmatic in our views on independence".

He previously criticised craft brewers for "selling out" to bigger companies.

Brewdog said the BBC's reporting had demonstrated "vindictive scrutiny and malicious criticism" of the beer firm.

The beer company has not directly responded to the new disclosures.

The BBC understands the Heineken discussions did not progress beyond the preliminary stage.

The Ellon-based company has trailblazed a crowdfunding model since it was launched in Fraserburgh in 2007 by Mr Watt and co-founder Martin Dickie. More than £100m has been raised by around 200,000 "equity punks", or shareholders.

In January 2022, a BBC Disclosure programme, The Truth About Brewdog, detailed claims of a toxic workplace and inappropriate behaviour by the CEO.

Mr Watt denied behaving inappropriately and apologised to anyone who has felt uncomfortable because of his behaviour. Brewdog has submitted a complaint about the programme to the broadcasting regulator, Ofcom.

Mr Watt has consistently said his aim is to float the company on the stock market, also known as an initial public offering (IPO).

Brewery news Singapore: ThaiBev’s brewery unit and Chinese supplier of material used in batteries start gauging demand for share sales in Singapore
The brewery unit of Thai Beverage Pcl and a Chinese supplier of a material used in batteries started gauging demand for share sales in Singapore and Hong Kong, respectively, testing appetite in a tough market for listings globally, Bloomberg reported on June 20.

ThaiBev’s BeerCo. initial public offering could raise between $800 million and $1 billion through the Singapore IPO, people familiar with the matter said last month. At the top of that range, it would be the biggest offering in the city since 2017, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

In Hong Kong, Tianqi Lithium Corp. also began pre-marketing its shares for an offering that could raise between $1 billion to $1.2 billion. It could potentially be the largest listing in the Asian financial hub since August, as large-size deals vanished this year. The company already trades in Shenzhen’s exchange, where the stock is up 11% year-to-date.

Both companies and their shareholders are aiming to tap investors in a market that hasn’t been this bad for nearly two decades, with proceeds from global IPOs and follow-on share sales down about 70% from a year ago. Surging inflation, aggressive central bank interest-rate hikes and the risk of a global recession ...More info on site

Hops news Germany: Hailstorm hits hop crop in southern Hallertau
In the late afternoon of June 20, 2022, a big hailstorm hit the southern part of the Hallertau. For the time being, the industry expects that approximately 1,000 ha of hops are affected. Damages vary significantly from hop garden to hop garden and range between 5 % and 100 %, HVG reported on June 21.

The grower-owned cooperative expects the heavily affected area to amount to at least 200 ha. They say they cannot quantify the total damage yet. However, they do not expect any influence on the market. Apart from this, hops in all hop growing regions are developing well, HVG said. Some varieties have already reached the trellis’ height, the others will follow soon. There have not been any major problems with pests and diseases. The development phase which is crucial for yield and quality is yet to come.

Brewery news The Netherlands: Heineken increasing its prices this summer
Netherlands residents will pay considerably more for Heineken beer on the terraces and in stores this summer. The Dutch brewer is increasing its prices, a spokesperson confirmed to NU.nl after reports in De Telegraaf.

Heineken is increasing the prices paid by bars and restaurants by an average of 5.8 percent. The brewer made agreements with supermarkets about a comparable increase in prices, the spokesperson said.

Heineken informed catering entrepreneurs about the price hikes on Monday. They’ll take effect on August 1.

According to Heineken, the price hikes are inevitable due to the rising costs of energy and raw materials like grain. The company also spends more on wages, packaging material, and transport.

Brewery news UK: Stella Artois introduces new 5% strength lager
Stella Artois has introduced a new five per cent lager in the UK after drinkers hit out at it for lowering the alcohol strength of its main brand, the Daily Mail reported on June 18.

The Belgian brewer has rolled out its new Stella Artois Unfiltered as its strongest available drink, less than two years after it dropped the strength of its original brand.

The pilsner-style beer is being marketed as an 'unfiltered premium lager' and reverses a trend of lowering alcohol levels.

It comes after drinkers were left furious when the brewer reduced the strength of its main brand from 4.8 per cent to 4.6 per cent in 2020.

The firm said the change had come due to 'health and wellness trends', and while customers hit out at the move, the brewer insisted it hadn't changed the taste.

On it's website, the brewer said the new unfiltered 'premium' lager has a 'naturally crisp and vibrant taste'.

It said: 'Our Belgian brewmasters honour the brewing methods of the past by creating this unfiltered premium lager. The absence of filtration allows the fresh flavours of malt and Saaz hops to burst through for a naturally flavourful taste.

'A naturally crisp and vibrant taste profile is encapsulated within this ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine starts wartime winter grain harvest
Ukraine has started its wartime winter grain harvest in the Odesa region, however, with the ongoing closure of ports and farmers’ lack of space to keep their produce, it is unlikely it will change the course of the path toward a global food crisis, The Brussels Times reported on June 19.

Before the invasion of Russia, Ukraine was seen as the “breadbasket of the world,” as it was among the biggest exporters of wheat, corn and sunflower oil. However, Russia is now preventing grain from leaving the country, resulting in food prices skyrocketing across the world and warnings of a global hunger crisis being issued.

Despite the fact that the number of ploughed fields in Ukraine has dropped by a quarter since the start of Russia’s invasion, the country’s Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food announced on June 18 that harvests in the country are underway, and that the areas where crops are being harvested have not decreased too significantly.

In total, 1 million 61 thousand hectares of winter grain are to be harvested in Odesa region this year. In particular, 551 thousand hectares of winter wheat, 244 thousand hectares of winter barley, 50 thousand hectares of spring barley and 190 thousand hectares ...More info on site
