Japan & USA: Sapporo acquiring California-based craft beer maker Stone Brewing
|
Sapporo U.S.A. is acquiring California-based craft beer maker Stone Brewing in a deal valued at about $165 million. The acquisition is expected to close in August. Stone Distributing Co., the craft brewer’s distribution business, is not included in the sale and will become an independent company under current ownership, the Food Dive reported on June 24.
Sapporo plans to produce its branded beers for U.S. distribution in Stone Brewing’s two breweries in Escondido, California, and Richmond, Virginia, alongside Stone’s craft labels. Sapporo expects to brew 360,000 barrels in the U.S. by the end of 2024, which would double Stone Brewing’s current production level.
This marks the second acquisition for Japanese beer giant Sapporo in the past five years as it seeks to build out its U.S. footprint. It purchased California-based Anchor Brewing in 2017 for a reported $85 million.
It’s easy to see why Stone Brewing, founded in 1996, is such an attractive acquisition opportunity for Sapporo. As the ninth largest craft brewer in the U.S. and the largest in Southern California, Stone claims to have pioneered the West Coast style IPA, and also produces a range of lagers, stouts and sours. Its beer is sold across the United States and in

USA, TX: Bad Astronaut Brewing Company to debut in Houston this fall
|
Despite turbulence in Houston's craft beer scene, people continue to see opportunities in serving Houstonians an expertly crafted IPA. Towards that end, a new brewery will open this fall just north of downtown, the CultureMap Houston reported on June 22.
Bad Astronaut Brewing Company will debut in the Hardy Yards neighborhood (1519 Fulton St.) in a 30,000-square-foot converted warehouse. When it opens, the facility will feature both a brewery and a taproom with a range of games such as pool tables, arcade machines, and board games.
Owners Chris Fall and Craig “Rocky” Keener describe themselves in a release as “very early employees” of Karbach Brewing, the well-regarded Houston brewery acquired by international brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016. Initially, they'll produce four beers for both the taproom and limited local distribution: American IPA, Hazy IPA, Munich Helles, and German Pilsner. Over time, the taproom will also offer other Bad Astronaut beers as well as guest taps from other Houston breweries.
“We are excited to bring Bad Astronaut Brewing Company to the Hardy Yards neighborhood,” Keener said in a statement. “Our goal is to deliver the highest quality beers and a fun destination for the community.”
Bad Astronaut's opening comes at a time of

USA, NC: Uwharrie Brewing to open in downtown Albemarle by end of summer
|
Colton Baker has always had a passion for making and consuming beer. After working and learning all the ins and outs of the brewery business over the past decade, the 30-year-old will be opening his own business, Uwharrie Brewing, in downtown Albemarle by the end of summer, The Stanly News & Press reported on June 23.
It will be the county’s second brewery, after The Brew Room in Locust, which opened last month. Uwharrie will be in the old fire station behind City Hall.
Baker decided to open his business in downtown as a way to help further revitalize the area and provide something for people to get excited about.
“I just kind of saw a void in the county for craft brewing,” he said, noting as a fan of craft beers, “there weren’t a whole of places serving it” in the area.
Originally from Mississippi, Baker and his family moved to Charlotte in 2005. For much of the past decade, he’s been working at a few breweries in the western part of the state.
He most recently spent five years at Boojum Brewery in Waynesville, where he started as a second shift brewer but gradually gained enough experience to become production manager.

USA, PA: Blondes & Brewnettes Brewery preparing to open in West Grove
|
Charles “Knute” and Bernadette Mellon are preparing to open Blondes & Brewnettes Brewery, the first alcohol establishment in West Grove since the town went dry in 1940, according to a report from Breweries in PA.
The brewery will be located at 122 Rose Hill Avenue and is expected to officially open its doors by the end of summer.
“We need to get the equipment onsite and installed, and we will have a good amount of construction to complete the bar and a few other items,” said Charles.
The husband and wife, who started brewing beer in November 2020 out of their restaurant, Twelves Grill & Café, plan to make a wide variety of styles, including brown ales and blonde ales, Belgian styles, IPAs, and darker beers.
Their new, 4,000-square-foot space will have a 20-foot bar and 10 taps carrying the brewery’s beer.
“The total seating indoors will be around 100, with some seating out back through our garage door,” said Charles. “Outside, we will have some tables and a beer garden for events when the weather is nice.”
Food — including barbeque, salads, and paninis, among other items — will also be served.

USA, CT: Urban Lodge Brewing announces plans for a second location in Hartford
|
A brewhouse that has already taken north central Connecticut by storm has announced plans for a second location in Hartford, the Patch reported on June 22.
The owners of Urban Lodge Brewing said the target is a Pratt Street location in one of Hartford's most historic districts.
"We are thrilled to announce that Urban Lodge will be opening a new taproom on Pratt Street in Hartford," Urban Lodge owners said in a social media post. "We are stoked to become a part of Downtown Hartford and the wonderful vibrancy and culture that's found a home in the Historic Pratt Street District."
Plans will evolve "over the coming months," the owners said.
The Pratt Street taproom will serve most of the Urban Lodge beverages, the owners said.
"Our original taproom on Purnell Place in Manchester will continue to operate with no interruptions or closures," the ones said. "In other words, we ain't going anywhere."
Urban Lodge also took over an old location for its original Manchester location at 47 Purnell Place. The building was transformed into a multi-station taproom, complete with an outdoor patio with a giant mural.

USA, ME: Brickyard Hollow Brewing Company on track to launch in Ogunquit on July 1
|
Brickyard Hollow Brewing Company, which is on track to open at 335 Main Street in Ogunquit on Friday, July 1, according to co-owner Brad Moll. The brewery and restaurant are opening in the space formerly occupied by Bintliff’s Steak House and, before that, The Viking ice cream parlor, Seacoastonline.com reported on June 23.
“It has always been a good spot,” Moll said.
The food and beer are tried and true, as Moll has three other Brickyard Hollows along the coast of Maine, in Yarmouth, Freeport and Portland. This new Ogunquit site expands his operations southward.
“When I was looking for a new location, I was looking for a small town that didn’t have a craft brewery – something small enough that we could connect with the community,” Moll said. “This just felt like a good spot ... It felt like a good fit for us.”
Brendon Medeiros will be the brewery’s operations manager, just as he is for the company’s other locations. Currently, Brickyard Hollow is hiring for two positions: a cook and a delivery person. Anyone interested in either of these two positions can email Medeiros at brendon@brickyardhollow.com.
This new Brickyard Hollow is creating approximately 40 new jobs in the community, according to Moll.

Spain: Heineken to construct a concentrated solar power plant at its brewery in Seville
|
Heineken NV’s Spanish unit has secured a building permit to construct a concentrated solar power (CSP) plant at its brewery in Seville, the city council of Seville, which licensed the works, announced on June 21.
The permit comes about a month after Heineken Spain announced it had signed an agreement with energy company Engie Espana to execute the project within the brewery’s grounds in southern Spain.
Engie Espana, part of French utility group Engie SA, was awarded the build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) contract, and will be responsible for the design, project management, installation and financing.
The CSP plant will operate as a self-consumption system that will power the brewery and enable it to cut fossil fuel consumption by over 60%. Under its contract, Engie Espana will supply the power for 20 years.

EU: Carlsberg to trial fibre beer bottle across Europe
|
Beer giant Carlsberg is set to conduct its biggest trial in a bid to launch its fibre beer bottle across Europe, Breaking News reported on June 22.
Eight thousand of the group’s new bottles – all completely recyclable – will be sampled by customers in eight markets across the continent including Poland, the UK and France. Other European countries set to sample the beer include Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Germany.
The bottle has been made with wood-based fibre shell and contains a lining made of a plant-based Polyethylene Furanoate (PEF) polymer.
Carlsberg said the materials can all be recycled and claimed it will retain the beer’s “taste and fizziness” against the same product in glass bottles.
Carlsberg’s new offering could potentially stay colder for longer compared to its glass and can counterparts too due to the fibre exterior, the company claimed.
Stephane Munch, vice president for group development at Carlsberg, described the product as a “great achievement” and said the company will continue to work with partners Avantium, who specialise in renewable chemistry and developed the polymer lining, and packaging company Paboco – who produced the outer shell of the bottle – to create developments in beer packaging.
He said: “Identifying and producing PEF, as

Ukraine: Grain exports fall by 55.5% in the first 20 days of June
|
Ukrainian grain exports fell by 55.5% in the first 20 days of June compared with the same period in 2021 to 777,000 tonnes, agriculture ministry data showed on June 20.
The volumes included 689,000 tonnes of corn, 63,000 tonnes of wheat and 21,000 tonnes of barley, the data showed.
Ukraine exported up to 6 million tonnes of grain a month before Russia launched its invasion on Feb. 24. Volumes have since fallen to about 1.7 million tonnes as Ukraine, which used to export most of its goods through seaports, has been forced to transport grain by train via its western border or via its small Danube river ports.

Russia: Southern Russia starts winter barley harvest with good yields
|
Russia's southern region of Krasnodar, one of the main parts of the country's breadbasket, has started harvesting new crop of winter barley with higher yields than a year ago, the regional administration said in a statement on June 21.
Russia is the world's largest wheat exporter and a major producer of barley. The country is expected to harvest a large grain crop and possibly a record high wheat crop this summer.
The harvesting of the new wheat crop will start in a week, officials at the Krasnodar region added in the statement.
The first tests show that yields of the new barley crop are up 119% from a year ago and so far total 7.38 tonnes per hectare, the officials said, adding that 99% of sowings were in good or satisfactory condition at the start of harvesting.
Farmers in the Krasnodar region will be harvesting grains from 1.9 million hectares this summer, including 1.6 million hectares of winter wheat and 174,000 hectares of winter barley.
