Brewery news Mexico: Heineken to build a can manufacturing plant in northern Mexico
Heineken will build a 1.8 billion peso, or $90 million, can manufacturing plant in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua near its brewery in the town of Mequoi, the company said on June 27, Reuters reported.

The plant, Heineken's seventh in the country, will bring around 120 direct jobs after opening and around 150 during the construction phase, it said in a press release.

The beermaker said it had seen increased demand for cans in the country, as other national alcoholic drink producers like Becle, Jose Cuervo's parent company, say they are struggling to obtain glass to bottle their spirits.

Around 40% of beer in Mexico is currently made in cans, while the rest is made in glass bottles, according to the National Chamber of Beer and Malted Drinks.

Brewery news USA, CO: Prost Brewing Company selects Northglenn for its new headquarters and expansion project
The Polis Administration and the Global Business Development Division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) announced on June 28 that Prost Brewing Company, a Colorado-based craft brewery, has selected the city of Northglenn for its new headquarters and expansion project, including a showcase production facility, distribution center and world-class biergarten.

“This exciting addition to Colorado’s nation-leading craft brewery industry is bringing over 200 good-paying jobs to Coloradans, and we are proud to congratulate Prost Brewing Company on this expansion,” said Gov. Polis. “Colorado is one of the best places to do business in the country, and our spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation continues to make Colorado the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”

Robust growth at Prost Brewing Company has caused the company to outgrow its current headquarters and production facilities. With the new location in Northglenn, the company will be able to expand operations nationally and act as a catalyst for the revitalization of the Northglenn Marketplace by introducing new consumer experiences.

The relocation and expansion project is expected to create 203 net new jobs and pay, on average, 154 percent of the current average annual wage in Adams County, once full production ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Clendenin Brewing Company enjoys its first few days of business
There’s a new craft brewery in downtown Clendenin, WCHS reported on June 26.

The owners of Clendenin Brewing Company on Main Street have been enjoying their first few days of business as the Kanawha County town marked the sixth anniversary of the historic June 2016 flood.

Matt and Nikki Holbert officially opened the brewery on Saturday. The Holberts told MetroNews last week they wanted to do something to help give back to the community.

“The flood devastated everything up here, so everybody’s been trying to come back and grown since then. It’s a growing process,” Nikki Holbert said.

The brewery, which includes a tap room, is located on the main floor of the former Farmers & Citizens State Bank building. The Holberts purchased the builing in 2018.

“We came through right after the flood. It was Chase right after the flood. They decided not to reopen. We decided to look at it and got a good deal on it,” Holbert said.

In addition to the brewery, the Holberts also own four Airbnb rooms which are available for rent. Nikki Holbert said there’s also outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking nearby, making for a great summer trip to Clendenin.

“The rail trail has come through, there’s a lot ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Coastline Brewery now open in Westbrook
Coastline Brewery, the new brewery located at 4 Grove Beach Road North, Westrook is now open, Zip06.com reported on June 27.

Last summer, the Westbrook Planning Commission as well as the Zoning Commission have approved an application to convert old medical offices located at 4 Grove Beach Road North into Coastline Brewery.

The application filed by applicant Richard Lemieux sought to turn vacant medical offices into a 2,500-square-foot brewery with about 80 seats indoors and an additional 24 seats outdoors. The facility will manufacture and distribute beer, cider, and seltzers.

“We are very excited to open our doors, it’s been over a year of bringing our dream to life. Me, [partner Phil Violette], and Rich have spent the last year building Coastline to stand out from other breweries and we can’t wait for people to see all of our hard work and try our beers!” said partner and head brewer Jason Magisano.

After several months of cosmetic work, hiring people to work the brewery, and anticipation, it’s finally open. The brewery celebrated its opening day on June 25 (after press time).

Asked his favorite beer that the brewery makes, Magisano said, “My personal favorite right now is the Man-Mosa DIPA. It tastes exactly like a ...More info on site

It’ll be the sister brewery to Southern Fields in Campbellton, FL.

A large assortment of fresh craft beer will be offered, along with ciders and wine.

So, I’ve always had an infinity for Dothan, and just knowing what’s coming down the line, especially with the downtown development, and the money, and the effort that the city is putting in, and the DDRA, we just feel really fortunate to be a part of that.”

Brewing equipment has already been delivered and the business is on track to open this fall.

Brewery news USA, NY: Destination Unknown Beer Company opens its second taproom upstate
Seven years after opening in Bay Shore, Destination Unknown Beer Company (better known as DUBCO) has opened a second taproom on a historic 50-acre farm in the Hudson Valley. The new taproom in Warwick, N.Y., called DUBCO Acres, opened on Memorial Day weekend and a grand opening and ribbon cutting was held on June 10, the Long Island Press reported on June 25.

DUBCO Acres is located in a converted dairy barn on the Thankful Acres Farm, which dates back to ownership by the Demarest family around 1752. Chris Candiano, DUBCO’s owner and head brewer, said, “my wife Jenn’s family has lived in the Warwick area for 20 years and it was our dream to find a space there that matches the beauty and integrity of our products.”

DUBCO plans to grow its own malting barley, wheat, rye and hops on the farm to create a series of unique estate-grown beers. For the opening of DUBCO Acres, the brewery introduced a new beer, Four Corners Farmhouse Ale, a French-style saison in tribute to the French immigrants who settled in the Warwick area and began farming it over 250 years ago.

The brewery was founded by Candiano and Brad Finn, natives of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Frost Town Brewing to open its doors to public this week
Frost Town Brewing, the latest brewery to hit Houston's vibrant beer scene, will open its doors to the public this week in a northeastern nook of downtown, Chron reported on June 27.

The venue has been almost three years in the making. Frost Town occupies the same footprint as the old diesel engine repair shop that had stood there since the 1970s. Due to structural issues, the team opted for a new buildout for the brewery. Demolition began at the end of 2019, and after a long wait, Frost Town will finally debut in a soft opening on June 30 and a grand opening on July 16.

There's no shortage of space in which to sip your beer at Frost Town Brewing, which spans about 9,000 square feet inside and more than 8,000 outside. The indoor space is split evenly between the production side of the brewery and its customer-facing portion, but there's a mezzanine in the latter that adds even more beer-drinking room.

Before pivoting to beer, Orlando, Fla., native Hannah Schaible was a professional basketball player, notably for SISU in Denmark and the Newcastle Eagles in the U.K. Her partner in life and business, John Sorensen, was a basketball coach at ...More info on site

Brewery news The Netherlands & Taiwan: Heineken reaches agreement to buy Sanyo Whisbih Group's subsidiary brewery
Dutch brewing company Heineken NV said on June 26 that it has reached an agreement to acquire a subsidiary brewery of Taiwan’s Sanyo Whisbih Group, the Taipei Times reported.

Heineken is to assume majority ownership and management rights of the Long Chuan Zuan Co Brewery in Pingtung County’s Neipu Township, the Dutch company said.

It would become the first multinational brewing company to operate brewery in Taiwan once the acquisition is completed.

The deal has been approved by the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Investment Commission, but details of the financial transaction cannot be disclosed at this time, as terms of the settlement have not been completed, Heineken said.

Heineken beer was introduced to the Taiwanese market in 1987 and the company’s first Taiwan office was established in 2002.

Headquartered in Taipei, Heineken Taiwan has six offices across the nation, with an annual revenue of NT$6 billion (US$202.62 million), the Dutch company said.

Heineken Taiwan distributes Heineken, Tiger, Strongbow and Edelweiss beer brands.

Taiwan is Heineken’s second-largest export market in the world, after the US, the company said.

As of 2019, Heineken had about 165 breweries in more than 70 countries, company data showed.

Brewery news Malaysia: Beer prices hike may impact demand in Q3 this year
Higher selling prices of beer come July 1 may impact demand in the third quarter of the year but Malaysia breweries’ dividends are expected to remain unscathed as long as they stay profitable, The Edge Markets reported on June 29.

It has been reported that Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd will be raising the prices of its products on July 1 because of increasing input costs. It is understood that the brewery will be raising prices of most of its brands including Carlsberg, Smooth Draught, Special Brew, Skol Beer, Danish Royal Stout, Asahi, Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc, Somersby, Connor’s Stout Porter and Nutrimalt. Price revisions for Corona Extra and Jolly Shandy are not expected.

Carlsberg did not respond to a request from The Edge to confirm the price increases.

“Carlsberg has just issued us a formal notification of its price increase. Earlier, we were informally told to be prepared for the price increase in its goods. We have not heard from Heineken Malaysia Bhd if it will raise prices too,” Malaysia Singapore Coffee Shop Proprietors’ General Association secretary Datuk Tan Chnan Yeang tells The Edge.

According to analysts, Carlsberg has confirmed that it will raise the prices of its goods on July 1, but this ...More info on site

Brewery news Asia: More drinkers in Southeast Asia turning to less-potent beverages and even alcohol-free drinks
From Thailand to the Philippines, more drinkers across Southeast Asia are turning to less-potent beverages and even alcohol-free versions of their favorite drinks so that they can avoid the throbbing headaches and other unpleasantness that follows an evening of overindulgence, the Nikkei Asia reported on June 28.

Suntory Holdings began producing its Horoyoi canned cocktail in Thailand on June 28 through local unit Thai Spirit Industry. The drink, which is also popular in Japan, contains 3% alcohol.

Suntory previously imported the beverage from Japan. It plans initially to produce 10,000 cases in Thailand, in grape and peach flavors.

"People have different tastes depending on the local climate and food, so thorough localization is key," said Makoto Kitaura, a marketing manager at Suntory Spirits.

Suntory also produces canned cocktails in Australia. The Japanese company hopes to speed development of new beverages and flavors by producing them where they are sold, so it can better navigate the ready-to-drink industry's notoriously short product cycles.

Thailand's ready-to-drink alcohol market, now dominated by wine coolers, will grow more than 20% between 2021 and 2026 to 8.53 million cases, the U.K.-based IWSR predicts.

In Vietnam, Sapporo Breweries began selling a lower-alcohol version of its Premium Beer last month. Sapporo Premium Beer 100 ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Budejovicky Budvar’s net profit up by some 10% last year
Budvar, the Czech brewer that has been in a long legal dispute with U.S. beer giant Anheuser-Busch over use of the Budweiser brand, increased its net profit by some 10% for the second straight year as it saw record output and exports despite the coronavirus pandemic, AP News reported on June 29.

Budejovicky Budvar NP, a 126-year-old state-owned brewery, said its net profit reached 337 million Czech crowns ($14.4 million) in 2021, up from 305 million the previous year. Its net profit was up nearly 10% in 2020.

Its exports were up a record 11% in 2021, reaching 1.3 million hectoliters (34.3 million gallons). Budvar sells its beer in more than 70 countries, with Germany among its major markets.

Budvar also registered record output for the second straight pandemic year, rising 4.6% to 1.8 million hectoliters (47.8 million gallons).

The pandemic affected the beer markets, with demand for beer in tanks and barrels declining as bars and restaurants closed for some time but demand for bottled beer rising.

The brewer has expanded in recent years to produce more than 2 million hectoliters (52.8 million gallons) of beer annually. That investment helped it react to changes in the markets during the pandemic.

Brewery news Cameroon: Brasseries Samuel Foyou launches its first beer in Cameroon
Brasseries Samuel Foyou (Brasaf) announced the launch of its first beer in Cameroon. The drink will contain 75% malt and 25% corn, the Business in Cameroon reported on June 29.

“In a competitive brewing sector, this alcoholic beverage, which stands out from the others with its quality and packaging, will be officially presented to the public on June 30 in [...] Douala," the company said in a statement. Brasaf says it wants to be a game-changer. The new beer will be marketed in PET bottles (plastic) of 0.65cl and 0.33cl with an alcohol content of 5.1%. The brewing company promises attractive prices to the population. In addition to beer, Brasaf plans to launch “Krystal Drink”, a range of soft drinks presented as low in sugar and gas.

As a reminder, the creation and operation of Brasaf was announced 8 years ago. The owner, Samuel Foyou, who already owns a distillery (Fermencam), filed deeds of creation on July 10, 2014, with a notary in Douala. At the time, the company was created with a share capital of CFA100 million.
