Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands reports first-quarter profit topping analysts’ expectations
Constellation Brands Inc. on June 30 reported fiscal first-quarter earnings of $389.5 million, AP reported.

On a per-share basis, the Victor, New York-based company said it had profit of $2.06. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, came to $2.66 per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.51 per share.

The wine, liquor and beer company posted revenue of $2.54 billion in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $2.36 billion, which also beat Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.19 billion.

Constellation Brands expects full-year earnings to be $10.50 to $10.80 per share.

Barley news Canada: 2021-22 barley carry-out stocks projected at record low level
For 2021-22, the Canadian barley supply and demand situation includes sharply lower carry-in stocks, production and supply, as well as significantly reduced domestic feed consumption and exports, as compared to last year, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its June report.

Carry-out stocks are projected at 0.4 million tonnes (Mt), a record low level, due to sharply decreased supply.

The stocks-to-use ratio will continue to fall to a record low of 4%, versus 6% last year and 13% for five-year average.

The Lethbridge feed barley price for 2021-22 is forecast to hit a new high of C$435/t, up sharply from the old record of C$294/t set in 2020-21 and well above the previous five-year average. The 2021-22 prices are supported by uncertain new crop production prospects, tight domestic barley supplies, the decline in the availability of other domestic feed grain substitutes, robust demand and stronger prices of other grains. Barley prices though are being tempered by the large quantities of US corn imports into Western Canada since last September, limiting the price increase.

For 2022-23, Canadian barley acreage is projected at 3.0 million hectares (Mha), 10% lower than 2021-22 but still 5% and 8% above the previous five- and ten-year averages. Of the total, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA & OH: Atlanta-based Scofflaw Brewing Co. coming to Columbus soon
An Atlanta-based brewery is soon coming to Columbus, WTVM reported on June 30.

Scofflaw Brewing Co. will be an addition to Midcity Yards.

“Columbus is the perfect city for new expansion,” said Matt Shirah, Founder and CEO of Scofflaw. “We’ve seen commercial development explode around us, positively shifting the future of the neighborhood. We couldn’t be more excited to join Midcity Yards on a project that we believe will have the same incredible long-term effect in such an exciting and active place like Columbus.”

Scofflaw will occupy approximately 9,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space at Midcity Yards, which includes a tasting room, brewing facility and beer garden.

Midcity Yards will also feature Moe’s Original BBQ across the hall from the brewery and Fetch Park.

“The vision of Midcity Yards was to create a destination where all people could casually cross paths and connect,” said Chris Woodruff, President of The Cotton Companies. “Columbus is ready for a brand like Scofflaw. We view Midcity as the link between Uptown and Midtown Columbus, and Scofflaw, along with its other tenants, will help to bring vibrant energy to an area that has been dormant for far too long. It’s the key to connecting this great city in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Steeplejack Brewing expanding again
Just over a month after Steeplejack Brewing launched its second location—and a little under a year after opening its first—the company is expanding again, the Willamette Week reported on June 30.

A third outpost will begin operations on Friday, July 1, at 5834 NE Pinefarm Court in Hillsboro. The site is right off of Highway 26 next to an industrial-retail plaza and sandwiched between two other beer-centric businesses: ABV Public House and Deep Space Brewing.

The pub, with 12 taps and two casks, as well as cider, wine and liquor, will initially feed customers via an indoor food truck while the full kitchen is being constructed. You can expect a menu similar to the one at Steeplejack’s Pizza and Beer location on Southwest Beaverton Hillsdale Highway, which includes hand-tossed pies as well as salads and appetizers like creamy polenta, fried Brussels sprouts, meatballs and arancini.

There is both indoor and dog-friendly outdoor seating, and in the coming weeks, pinball machines will be added to the interior.

Like the Southwest Portland tap house and the original rehabilitated church, this third pub is massive: 17,000 square feet. All of that room has allowed Steeplejack to install a 30-barrel DME Process Systems brewhouse with two 80-barrel tanks ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Second Dawn Brewing opening brand new brewery in Denver area
Ross Koenigs isn’t an artist, but you can find his work in all fifty states. He’s not a chef, but there’s a good chance that you or someone you know, has tried one of his recipes, The Denver Post reported on June 30.

That’s because as the longtime research-and-development manager for New Belgium Brewing, he helped create some of the Fort Collins-based company’s most well-known beers, in particular the Voodoo Ranger series, which is one of the top-selling IPA portfolios in the country.

But after 11 years at New Belgium, Koenigs and his wife, Amy, are moving from Fort Collins to the Denver area and going it alone with a brand new brewery that is under construction in a 5,100-square-foot former auto repair shop near the bustling Stanley Marketplace in Aurora.

Second Dawn Brewing, at 2302 Dayton St., will include a 1,000-square-foot patio and lineup of eight to 10 beers, each with a little bit of Koenigs’s spin to them.

“Starting my own business had always been one of my prime aspirations for my career,” he said, adding that although he loved his job, he knew that wouldn’t be able to look himself in the mirror if he didn’t at least try to bring ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Manantler Brewing renamed Tilted Glass Brewing by new owners
A brewery that opened in Ontario’s Durham Region in 2015 and moved to its current location last year has undergone some big changes, the Canadian Beer News reported on June 29.

Tilted Glass Brewing is the new name of Manantler Brewing, which was purchased earlier this year by Sam Wadera and has been renamed to signify a new start for the company.

Now led by a core team that includes Wadera, taproom manager Danika Chevrette, and head brewer Garett Stuckless, the brewery started phasing in the Tilted Glass name and branding last month, with a promise that it “will continue to make some of your favourites while introducing new exciting brews, [and will] still run familiar events and many new ones as well.”

In addition, the following statement has been posted on the Tilted Glass Instagram account:

We understand that the space we now occupy was once an unsafe place for some. Please know that we are working towards creating a new space that you will be comfortable to return to.

Our accessibility and safety guidelines will remain in our highlights and our safety statement is visible in the brewery.

We ask that you all continue to work with us to create a safe and accepting ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Triumph Brewing Company to move into new location in Princeton by Q1 2023
The renovations continue at Princeton’s former post office building on Palmer Square, Princeton and the Triumph Brewing Company is looking forward to moving into its elegant new home by the first quarter of 2023, according to Triumph owner and CEO Adam Rechnitz, the Town Topics reported on June 29.

Delays over the past six years, since Triumph first announced its plans to move from its 138 Nassau Street location, have been caused by easements that encroached on municipal property, protected state park land, the need for state permits, and, more recently, pandemic complications and supply chain problems in getting construction materials. But all systems seem to be go for an opening early next year.

“They’ve gotten a lot done. It’s going to be a beautiful place — I’ll tell you that,” said Princeton Building Inspector Dan Tagliere. “The framing and mechanicals have been done. A lot of the systems are in place.”

Rechnitz was upbeat about Triumph’s new Palmer Square setting — “obviously a better location” than 138 Nassau, he said. “I like the idea of being on the village green. We’ve learned a lot in the intervening 28 years since Triumph opened on Nassau Street about how to design and build, and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NE: Black Paws Brewing Co. hopes to open its doors early this month
Although he didn’t recall who wrote it, Jeb Oehlke remembered the core theme of the article he decided to give a read, the Devils Lake Journal reported on June 30.

The article’s topic was straightforward: what places in the United States were the worst places to live if you were a fan of craft brews?

Devils Lake made the list.

From then on out, the Devils Lake native in Oehlke wished to revise that notion for the better.

“I wanted to change that,” Oehlke said. “It was based on the proximity to other breweries and the availability through distributors and stuff like that, but I wanted to make sure that Devils Lake got off the bottom of that list.”

And so, Black Paws Brewing Co. came into being.

After Oehlke – who started a law practice in 2014 – recognized that practicing law was not what he wanted to do for the foreseeable future, he pivoted his sights toward a hobby that piqued his interest for some time: brewing. After all, his experience as a home brewer made him aware that, while he made good brews, he also enjoyed doing such an endeavor. Much more than working on wills and estates, anyway. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Rebel Mettle Brewery closes its doors two years after opening
Two years after opening, Rebel Mettle Brewery has closed its doors, Cincinnati.com reported on June 30.

The downtown craft brewery and taproom was open for its final day of business June 25.

A bartender at Rebel Mettle confirmed that the Central Avenue watering hole was closing, and said there are no plans to move or reopen the business somewhere else. Rebel Mettle's Google business page also notes that it's permanently closed.

The bar held its last live music event, called Mettle Fest II, featuring several bands on June 25.

Rebel Mettle opened in September 2020. The brewery specialized in lager, but also had a selection of IPAs, Pilsners, hard seltzers and seltzer-based cocktails.

Some canned Rebel Mettle brews are still available at bars and retail stores in Greater Cincinnati. It's unclear how long they'll remain on store shelves.

Brewery news USA, MA: Ground Effect Brewing Company closes down, new brewery to open at its location
Ground Effect Brewing Company in Hudson has closed but its Main Street taproom is not expected to be empty for long — a new brewery is aiming to open there in September, the MetroWest Daily News reported.

Ground Effect, at 312 Main St. (Route 62), announced on its Facebook page on June 28 it would close after Thursday, June 30 due to "unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances," that have forced it the brewery to be sold.

"We’ve made some great beers and had some fun times in those few years but it’s the friends we’ve made that mean the most to us," the brewery said on the post. "Our last day will be this Thursday, and the brewery will then be closed for renovations and improvements, the new owners are hoping to reopen sometime in September. We are looking forward to and are confident in what the new ownership has in store (great beer, great service, great times) and we hope we can all see each other again at the new brewery in September! Thank you all for your support and friendship over the last few years, we will miss you but we will see you again soon!"

Brewery manager Lindsay Monroe said the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Fort Point Beer Company decides to close
When Fort Point Beer Company first took over for Black Sands Brewery in Lower Haight, the brewery owners were excited to push forward their expansion plans in yet another San Francisco neighborhood, Justin Catalana, Fort Point co-founder and CEO, told SFGATE in an email. Unfortunately, as it did to many, COVID-19 threw a wrench in their plans. With the new location requiring further investment and another renovation to fully become what the company envisioned, Fort Point ultimately made the decision to close.

"As San Francisco’s hometown brewery, we’ll be focused on making our primary retail locations, Valencia and Ferry Building, even better, and rebuilding our wholesale business as the city comes back to life," Catalana said. "While we're sad to say goodbye to Lower Haight, we're energized to keep our focus on the San Francisco market, and we're grateful to our community in Lower Haight and beyond for their support over the years."

After a two and a half year tenure on Haight Street, the Fort Point Beer Company poured its final rounds at its Lower Haight location. On Monday, the San Francisco-based brewery announced on Instagram that Sunday, June 26, was its final day of service.

“While it’s bittersweet to say goodbye, ...More info on site

Brewery news France & Central African Republic: French anti-terrorism prosecutors open investigation against Groupe Castel
French anti-terrorism prosecutors have opened an investigation into allegations of potential complicity in war crimes made against Groupe Castel in the Central African Republic (CAR), a source close to the matter told Reuters on July 1.

A local unit of the French wine, beer and soft drink group is suspected of having made payments to local militia, the source said.

A spokesman for Groupe Castel said the company was fully cooperating with French authorities on the matter, and that an internal investigation following the first accusations had shown no evidence of wrongdoing.

Non-governmental organisation The Sentry earlier said the probe had been launched after it submitted a report detailing how a subsidiary of Groupe Castel, SUCAF RCA, may have made payments to the militia groups responsible for torture, rape, and mass killings.

Groupe Castel runs a sugar operation in the CAR, a country that has been racked by violent conflicts for years.

The source close to the matter said the probe that opened in Paris did not formally target the group or executives, but had been opened “against X”, which allows prosecutors to investigate in all directions.

With the launch of the investigation, The Sentry’s lawyers Clemence Witt and Anaďs Sarron told Reuters the prosecutor’s office ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Grain exports plunge 43% in June
Ukraine's grain exports plunged 43% year-on-year to 1.41 million metric tons in June, the agriculture ministry said on Friday, July 1, highlighting the damage being inflicted on a key sector of the economy by Russia's invasion.

Still, grain exports for the 2021-22 season ending June 30 rose 8.5% to 48.5 million tons, driven by strong shipments prior to the Feb. 24 invasion, the data showed.

Ukraine's grain exports have slumped since the start of the war as its Black Sea ports — the key route for shipments — have been largely closed off, driving up global food prices and prompting fears of shortages in Africa and the Middle East.

The ministry data showed wheat exports rose to 18.7 million tons in the 2021/22 season from 16.6 million a year earlier.

Corn exports edged up to 23.5 million tons from 23.1 million, while barley sales increased to around 5.8 million tons from 4.2 million.

The government has said Ukraine could harvest up 65 million tons of grain and oilseeds this year, compared with 106 million in 2021, due to the loss of land to Russian forces and lower grain yields.

The ministry said farmers in southern and eastern Ukraine had already started the 2022 harvest, threshing 293,800 ...More info on site
