Romania: Beer market down 10% in January-April

The Romanian beer market fell 10% in the first four months of 2022 compared to the same period last year, Worldakkam reported on July 4.
“In Romania, as in other European countries, the economic situation is very difficult, not only due to the effects of the health crisis caused by Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine, but also due to inflation and the accelerating rise in raw materials costs,“Julia Refererman, General Manager of the Romanian Brewery Association, explains.
The European Brewers said on July 4 that if decision makers take appropriate steps to support the sector, they may help facilitate the sector’s recovery from the pandemic.

Thailand: Boon Rawd Trading Co., Ltd. announces increase in its beer prices
|
One of Thailand’s leading breweries has announced an increase in the price of its beer, the North East Thailand Times reported on July 2.
Mr. Phurit Bhirombhakdi, Chief Executive Officer of Boon Rawd Trading Co., Ltd., has revealed that the price of Leo beer will increase from July 1, citing rising costs in production, energy and fuel.
Mr. Phurit said efforts had been made to maintain the price of Leo in order to reduce the impact on customers. However, rising costs meant that an increase in prices was now necessary.
He added that Leo is the last beer brand to implement a price increase, with other brands having already announced increases earlier in the year.
As of July 1, the price of Leo will increase as follows:
Big bottles (620ml) increased by 12 baht per box or equal to 1 baht per bottle.
Small bottles (320ml) increased by 18 baht per box or 0.75 baht per bottle.
Long cans (490ml) increased by 11 baht per tray or 0.90 baht per can.
Short cans (320ml) increased by 18 baht per tray arton or 0.75 baht per can.
The rise means consumers could see an increase of between 10-20 baht per box (bottles) or per tray (cans) on the retail price

The Philippines: Heineken reestablishing itself with a new corporate identity in the Philippines

Filipino beer lovers have more reason to celebrate as Heineken, maker of the world's most international premium beer, boosts its presence in the Philippines by reestablishing itself with a new corporate identity, the Manila Times reported on July 3.
The move comes following the Dutch brewer's recognition of the Philippines as one of the major drivers for growth in Southeast Asia, considered a top region in beer consumption.
Country Manager Michael Vainio is at the helm of Heineken Philippines Inc. to oversee the popular brand's expansion. Vainio has years of experience with CPG categories under his belt.
Heineken entered the Philippine market in 2016 through AB Heineken Philippines, a 50-50 joint venture partnership between the Dutch beer maker and Philippine-based diversified beverage company Asia Brewery Inc.
Now under a reformed partnership structure, Heineken Philippines has established its own sales and marketing office based in Manila, with Asia Brewery continuing as its local manufacturing partner and distributor in the Philippines.
Heineken is one of the most iconic beer brands in the world for over 150 years, known for its green bottle and red star, and its unforgettable rich and crisp flavors with subtle fruity notes.

UK: Britain could face summer beer shortage as AB InBev staff agree to strike
|
Britain could face a summer beer shortage after Stella Artois and Budweiser factory staff agreed to strike over wages, a union warned, the Metro UK reported on July 4.
Workers at Budweiser Brewing Group’s (BBG) Samlesbury site in Lancashire will walk out for 36 hours on 16 July, with a further 12-hour strike on 19 July.
As the cost of living crisis grips the UK, workers have said the current pay rise they’ve been offered isn’t enough.
After months of discussions, BBG offered an increase of 3% for 2022 and again for 2023, as well as increased overtime rates.
The GMB union called the ‘competitive package’ ‘insulting’, pointing out that it will amount to an overall cut for workers due to inflation.
GMB organiser Stephen Boden previously said strike action could lead to a ‘beer drought’.
He added: ”We will not be intimidated by [management’s] bully boy tactics.
‘It’s disgraceful they would threaten to take money out of workers’ pockets during a cost-of-living crisis.
‘They continue to ignore workers and put profit before people with this derisory pay offer. Workers are rightly angry.
‘But it’s not too late for management to listen to workers and get back round the table with us to work out a fair deal.’

Russia: Russia reduces grain export taxes to support shipments
|
Sanctions-hit Russia has reduced its grain exports taxes sharply after changing the formula it uses for calculating them to support shipments in the July-June marketing season, the agriculture ministry said on July 1.
Russian farmers are expected to harvest a massive wheat crop this summer, bringing a record exportable surplus in the 2022/23 season. However, shipments are complicated by high export tax, a strong rouble and sanctions-inflated costs for freight and insurance.
The new base price for calculating the wheat export tax is set at 15,000 roubles ($283.68 at the current rate) per tonne, the ministry said.
It was previously in U.S. dollars at $200 a tonne. The Agriculture Ministry used the base price as well as price indicators reported by traders to determine the level of tax on a weekly basis.
The wheat export tax itself is set at 4,600 roubles ($85.8 at the current rate) per tonne for July 6-12 against $146.1 per tonne for June 29-July 5, the ministry said in a separate note.
Russia is the world's largest wheat exporter and aims to remain so, President Vladimir Putin said this week. It continues to supply its traditional markets in the Middle East and Africa despite disruption to Black Sea supply chains.

Japan: Kiuchi Brewery Inc. plans to start exporting its whisky
|
A sake brewery that has sold its craft beer products around the world is now trying to emulate that success with its whisky, The Asahi Shimbun reported on July 4.
Kiuchi Brewery Inc. plans to start shipping Hinomaru Whisky on July 20.
The blended whisky consists of a spirit produced from barley imported from Britain and the United States and another made from locally grown wheat.
Based in Naka, Ibaraki Prefecture, the brewery is renowned for its Hitachino Nest Beer range. The craft beers are exported to about 40 countries mainly in Europe.
The company started producing whisky in 2016 in one corner of its beer factory.
It set up the Yasato Distillery here in 2020 for full-scale whisky production, using brewing and distilling equipment manufactured in Europe.
Fastidious about incorporating Japanese ingredients, the brewery has been working with local farmers to grow barley for beer production while producing a spirit using wheat and rice harvested in the prefecture.
It also plans to produce whisky mainly using domestically grown barley.
With some of its beers made with Fukure “mikan” oranges and malted rice, the brewery intends to produce whiskies with unique flavors to differentiate itself from U.S. and European breweries.
Hinomaru Whisky will be sold at some liquor retailers.
