USA, TN: Monkey Town Brewing Co. coming to Chattanooga
|
Monkey Town Brewing Co. is coming to Chattanooga. William Garrison told the Chattanooga Beer Board that the new location is at 724 Ashland Terrace. He has been in the business for seven years with the other pubs that are in Dayton, Tn. Unlike the other locations, the one in Chattanooga will only sell beer - no liquor or wine, The Chattanoogan.com reported on July 7.
This is a family operation, he said, and his son is the brewer. Both beer and food will be ordered with a walk-up style service where customers take a number and are able to start a tab. The capacity will be 90 with seating for 60 inside and an outdoor area that will seat 30 or 40 people. Mr. Garrison said he is not planning to have security there because he has had no problems or fights in the other locations and does not expect any in Chattanooga since the business has a restaurant atmosphere. There is no over-serving and anyone who is noticeably intoxicated is refused service, he said. And the business will close at 10 or 11 p.m.

USA, MD: Thick-N-Thin Brewing Co. slated to open next month in Hagerstown
|
A new brewery is slated to open next month in the Hagerstown Gateway North shopping plaza off Sharpsburg Pike, promising pour-your-own options, seating for about 160 people, special events — and free popcorn, The Herald-Mail Media reported on July 6.
Thick-N-Thin Brewing Co. has sampled its brews at a few events this spring in preparation for opening its facility at 18330 Spark Drive. Last week, the Washington County Board of License Commissioners — also known as the county liquor board — granted the business a limitedClass D license for beer products owned and produced by the licensee, Adam Shaool.
Shaool told The Herald-Mail he'd had the idea for the brewery for several years, but the plan came together after he got reacquainted with brewmaster Jake Beamer after a party in Frederick, Md.
"I started thinking about about four or five years ago, and actually me and the brewmaster randomly met four years ago when I was talking about it," he said. But Shaool wasn't ready to start and Beamer had another job lined up, "and we kind of lost track of one another."

USA, OH: Rockmill Brewery is for sale
|
Rockmill Brewery in Lancaster is for sale, The Columbus Dispatch reported on July 7.
A "coming soon" listing of the brewery's 23-acre property at 5705 Lithopolis Rd. NW sets the asking price at $6.75 million for all of the brewery's buildings, equipment, brand and business assets.
Rockmill Brewery owner Matthew Barbee said he decided to sell for a variety of reasons, including supply chain issues, and rising material and labor costs.
Rockmill expanded its production and added a tasting room to the property in 2019, shortly before the coronavirus pandemic. The last few years have been a "rough time" for the brewery, said Barbee. Rockmill ceased food operations at its brewery and closed its Brewery District restaurant in April.
"We're just not in a position to withstand any more kind of storms," he said.
Barbee, who started Rockmill on a 19th-century horse farm in 2010, said he's put a "lot of blood, sweat and tears" into growing the business. The brewery, which specializes in Belgian-style ales, overlooks the headwaters of the Hocking River.

USA, TX: Hi Sign Brewing set to reopen in its new home in Austin
|
Austin brewery Hi Sign Brewing closed its doors at its original southeast location in February in preparation for its big move to East Austin. Now, it’s set to reopen in its new home in the Govalle neighborhood at 730 Shady Lane starting this Saturday, July 9, the Eater Austin reported on July 7.
The brewery will offer its regular lineup of beers in addition to three new launches, including the Eastside Pilsner, undoubtedly a nod to the new location. The new location will also include food truck Burro Cheese Kitchen, which will be selling its selection of grilled cheese sandwiches.
The new Hi Sign location is both a taproom and a production facility fleshed out in a building that once operated as an RC Cola bottling center in the 1950s. Brewery founder and CEO Mark Philllipe enlisted OPA Design Studio to remodel the space with respect to its history, repurposing much of the building’s infrastructure and design. The space features a mural of the Austin cityscape by artist Mike Johnston.
Phillipe first opened Hi Sign Brewing in 2017 after years of experimenting in homebrewing following his service in the U.S. Marine Corps.

France: 83% of winter barley crop harvested by July 4
|
French farmers had harvested 14% of this year’s soft wheat crop by July 4 against 5% a week earlier, farm office FranceAgriMer said on July 8.
The harvest progress compared with just 1% a year ago, reflecting an early start to field work this year after hot, dry weather in late spring.
The French harvest is expected to bring contrasting results, with poor yields in the south but much better volumes in the north where recent showers have taken the edge off drought.
An estimated 63% of soft wheat was in good or excellent condition, down slightly from 64% the previous week, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal crop report.
Winter barley harvesting had reached its latter stages, with 83% of the crop gathered by Monday against 43% a week earlier and just 9% a year ago, the office’s report showed.
The winter barley harvest was running 15 days ahead of last year’s pace and four days ahead of the average progress of the past five years, FranceAgriMer said.
Durum wheat harvesting was 50% complete while 14% of the spring barley crop had been cut.
Mostly warm, dry weather this week followed by very hot conditions forecast for next week are expected to keep field work brisk.

UK: Winter barley, wheat area higher than last year’s

The United Kingdom's wheat area for this year's harvest is estimated to be 1% higher than the previous season at 1.807 million hectares, according to a planting survey conducted by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).
The AHDB said the rise was partly at the expense of spring barley which saw a 12% decline to 656,000 hectares, the lowest level in the United Kingdom since 2014.
Oats area also fell, dropping 8% to 183,000 hectares.
There were also year-on-year increases for rapeseed (up 9% at 336,000 hectares) and winter barley (up 10% at 447,000 hectares), the survey showed.

Qatar: No alcohol in Qatar stadiums for the 2022 FIFA World Cup
|
The sale of alcoholic beverages around stadiums and at some fan gatherings will only be permitted during restricted time slots during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where alcohol consumption is strictly regulated, according to several sources.
Details are still under discussion, sources linked to the organization of the event told AFP.
But the purchase of beer should not be possible inside the stadiums. It should only be allowed around sports grounds, before and after matches.
The FIFA site also promises “beers, champagne, wines and spirits” in VIP areas.
Fans should be able to buy beer during restricted time slots at outdoor gatherings of FIFA supporters. These are to be located in Al Bidda Park, in the center of the capital Doha, and accommodate around 40,000 people.
The other entertainment areas planned for the approximately 1.2 million visitors expected not all will serve alcohol, according to a document from the Supreme Organizing Committee in Qatar dated June 2 and seen by AFP.
