USA, PA: Rosko’s Brew House opens its doors to the public
|
Focused on community, family and fun — Rosko’s Brew House, located at 601 Pine St. in Williamsport, has recently opened its doors to the public, the Sun Gazette reported on July 9.
The brew house, located in one of Williamsport’s historic buildings, offers a variety of craft beer, games, indoor and outdoor seating and more.
Husband and wife team, Adam and Samantha Roskowski have had a long time vision of the Brew House.
“The business in a sense is like a reflection of ourselves,” said Adam.
“We have a young family, we’re very family based and community based. We kind of tried to really spin everything together. Because the values of the business are community, family, and fun,” Samantha.
The two met in Pittsburgh while in college. Adam is originally from the area.
“We kind of always had this gravitational pull. My family was trying to get us to move back — it seemed like a good opportunity to move back. And more approachable to open up a business like this in a smaller city than Pittsburgh. It was kind of a culmination of a lot of different things,” Adam said.
The house, which had become vacant at the right time, was a perfect fit for their

USA, OR: Wild Ride Brewing launches new location in Prineville
|
Wild Ride Brewing is Redmond, Oregon’s largest, and second oldest brewery, and one of the most popular attractions in the city just north of Bend. Founded in 2014, the 20 bbl production facility is home to 4 food trucks and one of the best summer weather patios in the center of town. After nearly a decade the brewery known for beers like Nut Crusher peanut butter Porter and Whoopty Woot Wheat in classic pacific northwest styles and their taster trays made out of mini ski’s they call “tasteskis” has opened their first new location in Prineville, the New School reported on July 11.
Located near the center of town on the main drag of 3rd street, Wild Ride Brewing Prineville shares a lot in common with the original location. A more industrial, modern, garage-like space with a large and inviting beer garden out front that acts as a welcoming mat for the community.
But why move only 20 miles from their original location for their expansion instead of a completely new market?
“We felt if we could find the right location, our model of our tap room would be a good addition in Prineville, and we’d be able to fit in and

USA, MN: Lake Superior Brewing Co. nearing long-awaited reopening
|
Lake Superior Brewing Co. is nearing its long-awaited reopening, the Duluth News Tribune reported on July 8.
Since purchasing the business in 2020 from its former owner, Lars Kuehnow, new owners Sarah and Seth Maxim have been hard at work. Instead of continuing to rent from its longtime warehouse-style taproom location in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, the couple decided to purchase their own building in the Lakeside neighborhood.
Renovations to the new location are wrapping up, and staff will undergo orientation next week. A soft opening is anticipated during the third week of July. Regular hours will be 4-11 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
Although Lake Superior Brewing will no longer be distributing beer in liquor stores, recent state law allows growlers and six-packs of beer and full-size bottles of liquor to be sold by the brewers and distillers who make them. However, Lake Superior Brewing beer will not yet be available as it is opening in phases, but there will be a full bar available along with the opening of a restaurant.
"We wanted to get the ball rolling — do things small and right. The brewery will be finished within the next few months, hopefully by Labor Day," Sarah Maxim said.

USA, MI: Kingsley Local Brewing Company one step closer to opening
|
Kingsley Local Brewing Company has been in the works for a few years. On Monday, July 11, community members showed up to help get a signature feature at the brewery in place, the 9&10 News reported.
“It’s been a long haul, but the end is in sight,” said Pete Kirkwood, Founder of Workshop Brewing Company and Kingsley Local Brewing Company.
It’s been a long road for Kingsley Local Brewing Company to get to this point. They’re close to finally opening their doors after facing a fair share of obstacles over the last year.
“Our tanks, our brewing equipment, our refrigeration, all this stuff is on-site, either installed or ready to install,” said Kirkwood. “Right now, it’s the framing trim and painting and just finishing it up. That’s been the challenge.”
About 30 volunteers showed up on July 11 to help install this more than 700-pound, 30-foot slab of walnut for the brewery’s bar top. It’s from a tree that fell in Traverse City four years ago.
“People step up and do what needs to be done to make things happen in their small town,” said Dan Hawkins, Village Manager of the Village of Kingsley.

USA, Washington, DC: 3 Stars Brewing Company shuttering after nearly a decade in business
|
3 Stars Brewing Company, one of the District’s first modern breweries, is shuttering after nearly a decade. There was no reason cited for the closure, the Washingtonian reported on July 8.
What started as a backyard experiment with a home-brewing kit, turned into a hot spot for DC beer lovers. Founders Dave Coleman and Mike McGarvey opened the brewery in 2012 after purchasing a 40,000-gallon walk-in freezer for $1.35. Since then, they’ve grown their beer list to 200-plus options and been named “DC’s Best Local Brewery” by Washington City Paper four times in under a decade. Washingtonian toured the brewery when it was just two guys, a couple of volunteers, and a fraction of the size it is today.
Other District brewing companies, local businesses, and 3 Stars regulars took to social media to express their sorrow about the closing of the beloved neighborhood hangout and brewery.
“3 Stars was a special part of the DC beer scene and you will be missed,” Union Craft Brewing, a Baltimore brewery, replied to 3 Stars’ tweet announcing the closure.
“I probably shouldn’t say this out loud, but you guys taught me to like (and even sometimes love) beer,” wrote former Washington City

USA, WI: Melms Brewing Company to close its doors for good
|
Melms Brewing Company announced on Facebook they will be closing their doors for good. They do not have an official closing date yet, but their hours will be limited over the next week or so, according to their Facebook post, the Freeman reported on July 12.
“We want to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers and the local bars and restaurants that have supported Melms over the years,” read the Melms Facebook post. “You’ve allowed us to live out a dream of providing great local craft beer to Lake Country.”
The Hartland location reopened the company in 2018 after a long history in the Milwaukee area. The original Melms Brewery founded by Charles T. “C.T.” Melms, son-in-law of other co-founder Franz Neukrich, opened in 1854 in Walker’s Point, becoming the largest brewery in Milwaukee by 1860, according to the Melms Brewing Company website. In 1869, Melms passed away and the company was bought by Pabst, previously known as Best and Co.
In 2014, funding for the new project started as an IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign. The project continued to grow as a contract brewer, leading to the grand opening of the Melms Taproom in March of 2018, according to the Melms

Romania: Romanian brewer Bergenbier reports 10% yoy increase in 2021 turnover
|
Romanian brewer Bergenbier, part of U.S.-Canadian group Molson Coors Beverage Company, said on July 11 its turnover rose 10% year-on-year to 716 million lei ($147 million / 145 million euro) in 2021 and announced it plans to further develop its beyond beer portfolio, the SeeNews reported.
"In 2021, Covid-19 restrictions continued to affect the HoReCa sector. We managed to compensate through our strong Off Trade channel and strategic plans helped us to have a solid performance at company level, in line with forecasts," Bergenbier general manager Mihai Voicu said in a company press release.
The company's long-term plan is to diversify its product portfolio in the beyond beer segment, as beer mixes and flavored beers are increasingly popular. These products' sales on the Romanian market increased by 20% last year.
"The current year has come with a series of new challenges prompted by record inflation, and rising prices of utilities and raw materials which affects the entire beer production and distribution chain," Bergenbier financial director Alexandru Nomicos said.
Some 98% of all raw materials used in production by Bergenbier originate from Romania.
"The outlook for the second half of 2022 is far from optimistic. Consumers' purchasing power has fallen to a worrying level, and our

India: Pernod Ricard puts new Indian investments on hold
|
French spirits group Pernod Ricard has put new Indian investments on hold due to long-running tax disputes with authorities on valuing liquor imports, according to two sources with direct knowledge and company letters seen by Reuters.
The world's second-biggest spirits group said its legal wrangles have progressively worsened since they first started nearly 30 years ago, making it tough to do business in the country and raising the prospect of a major financial hit.
The maker of Chivas Regal, Glenlivet Scotch whisky and Absolut vodka is lobbying Indian authorities, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office, to resolve the matter.
"This ever-lasting litigation has been a big strain on our ease of doing business and has inhibited fresh investment by our group headquartered in Paris (France) for expansion of business in India," Pernod wrote in a Nov. 24 letter to Modi's office.
"These disputes initially arose in 1994 in import valuation by the custom authority, have compounded year after year and is still ongoing."
Pernod's stance casts a shadow on future growth of the company in a region it says is among its "key strategic markets". It expects India and China, the world's two most populous nations, to drive most of the alcoholic industry's growth in

UK: Premium beer brands becoming more prominent across UK pub and bar menus
|
Premium beer brands are becoming more prominent on operator menus across UK pub and bar drinks menus, according to data from Lumina Intelligence’s Menu Tracker.
Data collected in May 2022 shows that Brewdog accounts for 19% of all 330ml beer bottles or cans on the menus of 20 largest pub and bar brands in the UK - an increase of one percentage point versus February 2022. Heineken, meanwhile, accounts for 7% - an increase of five percentage points, and Amstel accounts for 3% - an increase of one percentage points.
All three of these brands are more expensive than the average price of beer on menus, Lumina reports – Brewdog is 12.5% more, Heineken 2.6%, and Amstel 5%.
As well as premium beer brands, operators are turning to spirits to drive higher spend.
In April 2022, gin was the most prominent spirit to feature on pub menus – accounting for 37% of all spirits on menus. Whiskey is the next highest and has grown its share since February – accounting for 17% of all spirits on a pub/bar menu.
Operators are expanding their ranges of these more premium drinks, with the average price of whiskey on drinks menus 1% more expensive than total spirits.

North Korea: North Korea celebrates 20th anniversary of its national beer
|
North Korea has celebrated the 20th anniversary of the state’s national beer – which was founded after the regime bought a British brewery, the Metro reported on July 9.
The drink, Taedonggang, began life after the Ushers plant was purchased by the regime for £10 million and reassembled in Pyongyang.
The beer is said to have won ‘great public favor’ and to have been made in line with ‘detailed teachings’ delivered by the rogue state’s former supreme leader, Kim Jong-il, who died in December 2011.
He is said to have shown ‘deep care’ for the factory’s construction in a news release by the regime’s online outlet last week.
Taedonggang, which is named after a river in the capital, owes its existence to the purchase of the brewery after the Wiltshire company went bust following 176 years of award-winning production.
Marking the anniversary, the Rodong Sinmun website, a mouthpiece for the state, said: ‘Taedonggang Beer, which gained great public favor at an international beer exhibition in 2019, is very popular among all people.’
Gary Todd, who had been head brewer at Ushers before it folded, found himself in the unlikely scenario of training up North Korean staff so the plant could be rebuilt 5,200 miles away.
He said:
