China & Pakistan: Chinese beer gaining popularity in Pakistan
|
Chinese beer is taking off in popularity in Pakistan, after a company set up a beer plant a few years ago in the western province of Balochistan, DW.com reported on July 14.
The plant supplies beer to large parts of the province, along with the southern province of Sindh and the commercial hub of Karachi. Fans say that it's the colorful packaging, availability and high alcohol percentage that's attracting locals to try the beer.
Muhammad Zaman Khan, the director-general of Excise and Taxation South Balochistan, told DW that the Chinese company – named Hui Coastal Brewery and Distillery Limited – applied for the plant in 2016 and was granted a license in 2018.
The company started production last year, with a capacity of 65,000 to 100,000 litres daily.
Khan admitted that the company was initially targeting Chinese people working on the China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects, but began selling to local retailers as well.
The company has introduced three types of beer, with each can holding 500 millilitres, said Asif Hasan, who lives in Hub, the city where the factory is located. The variations include Hungchi Special Brew, Hungchi Amber Lager and Hui Cheng.
Hasan said he has a group of 25 friends and

United Kingdom: Good early yields of winter barley reported across southern England
|
Good early yields of winter barley are being reported across southern England, with generally good grain quality ahead of an intensifying heatwave sweeping the country, the Farmers’ Weekly reported on July 12.
Cambridgeshire grower James Peck reports winter barley yields above budget after bringing his autumn drilling dates forward and applying nitrogen fertiliser earlier in the year together with an inhibitor to anticipate the spring drought.
His average yield for his six-row hybrid mainstay variety, Belfry, is 9.3t/ha with a top yield of 10.04t/ha and a low of 8.82t/ha. He expects to finish cutting his 1,069ha of winter barley by the end of this week.
“We had budgeted for 9t/ha and are averaging 9.3t/ha, and we are bringing in about 1,000t/day,” he tells Farmers Weekly from his base at Scotland Farm, Dry Drayton, some four miles west of Cambridge.
He puts the good result down to drilling his winter barley about three weeks earlier, from 6-20 September, to get the crop off to a good start through the autumn and winter, although this does compromise blackgrass control on his generally heavy land.
The moisture levels at the start of harvesting were 15-17% and he was having to run grain through the grain dryer, but levels

Australia: Malting barley exports down 48% in May
|
Australia exported 637,004 tonnes of feed barley, 72,608t of malting barley and 304,470t of sorghum in May, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The malting figure is down 48 per cent from the April total of 139,387t, while feed barley exports for May are up 2pc from the 624,130t shipped in April.
Sorghum exports in May jumped 53pc from the April total of 198,800t.
Mexico accounted for 87pc of Australia’s malting exports in May, while Saudi Arabia on 269,234t was the major destination for feed barley shipments, taking 42pc of the total.
Kuwait on 123,916t and Japan on 100,332t were the second and third-biggest destinations for Australia’s May-shipped feed barley.
China continues as the volume buyer of Australian sorghum, and was the destination for 231,315t, or 76pc, of May shipments, with Japan on 65,031t the other major bulk customer for the month.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said May saw malting barley shipments back off the big April number and return to around the average monthly figure for the year.
“Mexico continues to lead the way with a recent record month, with lower numbers from Vietnam and Peru to balance that off,” Mr Roache said.
“The mystery Kuwait malt last month

Germany: Winter barley crop expected to fall 0.5% this year
|
Germany’s 2022 wheat crop will increase 5.3% on the year to 22.51 million tonnes despite a recent heatwave and dryness, the country’s association of farm cooperatives said in its latest harvest estimate on July 14.
The association forecast Germany’s 2022 winter rapeseed crop will rise 8.2% from last summer’s crop to 3.77 million tonnes.
In its previous forecast in June, the association had estimated Germany’s 2022 wheat crop at 22.65 million tonnes and the winter rapeseed crop at 3.78 million tonnes.
Dry, hot weather had stressed German grains so the forecast had been cut slightly, the association said. But an average German grains harvest is still expected.
“Can Germany with its harvest this year make a contribution to global grain supplies, which are facing an ever growing supply gap because of the war in Ukraine?” the association said. “According to our forecast this is possible.”
Germany is the European Union’s second largest wheat producer after France and a major grain exporter.
But Germany is facing serious transport and logistics bottlenecks, partly because of the turmoil in energy markets after the Ukraine war, it said.
Germany fears a stop to Russian gas supplies and has decided to use more coal-fired power to help fill the gap.
The need bring
