Brewery news Canada, NL: Banished Brewing begins making its mark in Paradise
Craft beer has been on the rise for quite some time and, in an exploding market, a new Paradise-based brewery has begun making its mark, the Saltwire reported on July 12.

Banished Brewing aims to create a remarkable beer surrounded by even better art for everyone in the community.

Keeping originality in mind, Tom Williamson, the head of financing for Banished, says diving into the industry was a no-brainer.

“Although the market is exploding with craft beer, I wouldn’t say supply has outstripped demand,” said Williamson.

“If you look at NLC sales figures, you can see major growth in the craft segment. I mean, overall, the market will eventually saturate a little bit but I think we are very far away from that.”

Banished has been in business for roughly a month now, and because preparation for this project began three years ago, general reception has exceeded expectations.

“Even though we began brewing in early May, we have been working on this business for a long time,” said Williamson.

“We now have six different brews on the market - we had two right off the bat that sold out. The most critical decision we made was to work with artist Paul Hammond, and we let him just ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Great Black Swamp Brewing Company facility opens in Toledo
The newest Great Black Swamp Brewing Company facility has opened in Toledo, 12abc.com reported on July 13.

The facility is located at 2250 Tedrow Road near the corner of Byrne and Heatherdowns. The Company says it includes a brewery and a full-service tavern with 25 taps of house-made beer, wine and seltzers and is also hosting food trucks throughout the week and weekend.

“Our goal is to provide a fun, warm, and welcoming atmosphere for all near and far,” said owners Kyle King, Andy Parish and Dr. Bob Morris. “We strive to bring a new flavor to the neighborhood as well as bring a lot of our beloved beers that have made us who we are.”

The company says the 4,000-square-foot tavern and outside beer garden area provides plenty of space to bring in a crowd as well as cozy up in the brewery’s special lounge area with a cold pint and create memorable experiences.

The company will host many events and theme nights and encourages the public to stop in and say hello to Kyle, Andy or Dr. Bob. You can also ask them for a tour while they are there.

“We are ecstatic to be a part of the amazing comradery of the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Barley Island Brewing to close for good on July 23
When the regulars at Barley Island Brewing call themselves a family, they mean it, the Indianapolis Star reported on July 13.

Many customers had their first drink or first date there years ago and are still coming in. Several met their future husbands and wives at the bar. They’ve attended each others’ weddings and funerals, held fundraisers when someone was sick and birthday parties when they were well.

“You can have a random conversation with a stranger and they become a regular, and then your best friend,” said Amy Gustafson, 38, who has been going to the bar for 17 years.

After 23 years near the Courthouse Square the family members are feeling a bit estranged. Barley Island owner Jeff Eaton announced he was closing the craft brew pub July 23. He said he couldn’t reach leasing terms to stay with the new owners of the building.

The closing is the latest in a surge of recent changes for some established businesses on the square as Noblesville races to redevelop downtown and entice new restaurants and shops to move in.

Kirk’s Hardware, a mainstay since the early 1950s, closed at the end of March. Owners Bill and Carrie Prater said they couldn’t find a buyer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Recluse Brewing Company to open in Port of Camas-Washougal industrial park in 2023
The Port of Camas-Washougal is ready to welcome a brand-new brewery to its brand-new industrial building in 2023, the Camas-Washougal Post-Record reported on July 14.

During their July 6 meeting, Port commissioners approved an agreement that will allow Recluse Brewing Company to lease two 3,330-square-foot bays inside Building 20, a 50,000-square-foot building set to open in the Port’s industrial park in 2023.

“I’m glad we’re getting another brewery down there,” Port Commissioner Larry Keister said. “The ‘pub hub’ is on its way. … It’s a nice neighborhood to be in.”

The lease allows Recluse Brewing to operate a production brewery and tasting room, which may also serve food. The company’s lease of the Port property will begin on April 1, 2023.

August Everson, a former employee of the Portland-based Widmer Brothers and Wayfinder Beer breweries, founded Recluse Brewing.

“He initially wanted to start sooner at another location. However, the draw of Building 20 and Steigerwald drove his decision to wait until construction was complete,” David Ripp, the Port’s chief executive officer, said of Everson.

Recluse will join the 54-40 Brewing Company at the Washougal industrial park, located close to the Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge. 54-40 opened a brewery and restaurant in the industrial park in ...More info on site

Brewery news United States, IA: Twisted Vine Brewery already open in Des Moines
Des Moines gained another craft brewery last month with the opening of Twisted Vine Brewery in the East Village, the Des Moines Register reported on July 13.

Touting a massive beer garden, Twisted Vine moved from its original location at 3320 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, into a 7,500-square-foot space at 112 S.E. Fourth St. that was previously home to The Garden nightclub.

Dalene DeGeest, one of the seven partners managing Twisted Vine, said there will be a grand opening in August as brewers continue to ramp up production in the new space.

“We had to get everything set up before we could brew and that's been the most challenging," DeGeest said. "You open your doors and people want Twisted Vines beers but we need a couple of weeks to brew them."

The new brewery features a 30-foot bar with 24 taps but there are currently only around 10 Twisted Vine beers available, including easy-drinking First Run Blonde Ale and smooth Triclops Tripel.

A second bar with 19 taps opens via garage doors to a sprawling, dog- and kid-friendly patio with views of the State Capitol and Principal Park. In August the brewery also plans to begin serving snacks and appetizers such as soft pretzels ...More info on site

Barley news United Kingdom: Good early yields of winter barley reported across southern England
Good early yields of winter barley are being reported across southern England, with generally good grain quality ahead of an intensifying heatwave sweeping the country, the Farmers’ Weekly reported on July 12.

Cambridgeshire grower James Peck reports winter barley yields above budget after bringing his autumn drilling dates forward and applying nitrogen fertiliser earlier in the year together with an inhibitor to anticipate the spring drought.

His average yield for his six-row hybrid mainstay variety, Belfry, is 9.3t/ha with a top yield of 10.04t/ha and a low of 8.82t/ha. He expects to finish cutting his 1,069ha of winter barley by the end of this week.

“We had budgeted for 9t/ha and are averaging 9.3t/ha, and we are bringing in about 1,000t/day,” he tells Farmers Weekly from his base at Scotland Farm, Dry Drayton, some four miles west of Cambridge.

He puts the good result down to drilling his winter barley about three weeks earlier, from 6-20 September, to get the crop off to a good start through the autumn and winter, although this does compromise blackgrass control on his generally heavy land.

The moisture levels at the start of harvesting were 15-17% and he was having to run grain through the grain dryer, but levels ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Malting barley exports down 48% in May
Australia exported 637,004 tonnes of feed barley, 72,608t of malting barley and 304,470t of sorghum in May, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The malting figure is down 48 per cent from the April total of 139,387t, while feed barley exports for May are up 2pc from the 624,130t shipped in April.

Sorghum exports in May jumped 53pc from the April total of 198,800t.

Mexico accounted for 87pc of Australia’s malting exports in May, while Saudi Arabia on 269,234t was the major destination for feed barley shipments, taking 42pc of the total.

Kuwait on 123,916t and Japan on 100,332t were the second and third-biggest destinations for Australia’s May-shipped feed barley.

China continues as the volume buyer of Australian sorghum, and was the destination for 231,315t, or 76pc, of May shipments, with Japan on 65,031t the other major bulk customer for the month.

Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said May saw malting barley shipments back off the big April number and return to around the average monthly figure for the year.

“Mexico continues to lead the way with a recent record month, with lower numbers from Vietnam and Peru to balance that off,” Mr Roache said.

“The mystery Kuwait malt last month ...More info on site

Barley news Germany: Winter barley crop expected to fall 0.5% this year
Germany’s 2022 wheat crop will increase 5.3% on the year to 22.51 million tonnes despite a recent heatwave and dryness, the country’s association of farm cooperatives said in its latest harvest estimate on July 14.

The association forecast Germany’s 2022 winter rapeseed crop will rise 8.2% from last summer’s crop to 3.77 million tonnes.

In its previous forecast in June, the association had estimated Germany’s 2022 wheat crop at 22.65 million tonnes and the winter rapeseed crop at 3.78 million tonnes.

Dry, hot weather had stressed German grains so the forecast had been cut slightly, the association said. But an average German grains harvest is still expected.

“Can Germany with its harvest this year make a contribution to global grain supplies, which are facing an ever growing supply gap because of the war in Ukraine?” the association said. “According to our forecast this is possible.”

Germany is the European Union’s second largest wheat producer after France and a major grain exporter.

But Germany is facing serious transport and logistics bottlenecks, partly because of the turmoil in energy markets after the Ukraine war, it said.

Germany fears a stop to Russian gas supplies and has decided to use more coal-fired power to help fill the gap.

The need bring ...More info on site

Brewery news China & Pakistan: Chinese beer gaining popularity in Pakistan
Chinese beer is taking off in popularity in Pakistan, after a company set up a beer plant a few years ago in the western province of Balochistan, DW.com reported on July 14.

The plant supplies beer to large parts of the province, along with the southern province of Sindh and the commercial hub of Karachi. Fans say that it's the colorful packaging, availability and high alcohol percentage that's attracting locals to try the beer.

Muhammad Zaman Khan, the director-general of Excise and Taxation South Balochistan, told DW that the Chinese company – named Hui Coastal Brewery and Distillery Limited – applied for the plant in 2016 and was granted a license in 2018.

The company started production last year, with a capacity of 65,000 to 100,000 litres daily.

Khan admitted that the company was initially targeting Chinese people working on the China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects, but began selling to local retailers as well.

The company has introduced three types of beer, with each can holding 500 millilitres, said Asif Hasan, who lives in Hub, the city where the factory is located. The variations include Hungchi Special Brew, Hungchi Amber Lager and Hui Cheng.

Hasan said he has a group of 25 friends and ...More info on site
