Brewery news Denmark & Canada: Danish brewer Royal Unibrew to acquire Canadian craft brewer Amsterdam Brewery
Danish brewer and beverage maker Royal Unibrew will acquire Canadian craft brewer Amsterdam Brewery in a deal valued at around 250 million Danish crowns ($34 million), Royal Unibrew said in a statement on July 15.

"The acquisition we are doing today is very important for the future growth of Royal Unibrew in the Americas region," Chief Executive Lars Jensen said in a statement.

"We are adding capacity in Canada, which is also close to our U.S. business and over time we expect to serve most of Canada and partly United States from Amsterdam Brewery," Jensen added.

The vast majority of Royal Unibrew's revenue is generated in Europe. In 2021, around 11% of the company's net revenue came from its international segment, which includes the Americas, according to its annual report.

The acquisition, which is expected to close in the third quarter of this year, placed an enterprise value on Amsterdam Brewery of approximately 250 million Danish crowns, which will be paid on a debt free basis, Royal Unibrew said.

It expects the deal to be earnings-per-share accretive within the first year of ownership.

Brewery news USA, IL: Flipside Brewing ready to debut in Tinley Park
It's about that time, Erik Pizer thinks. Time to see what's on the flipside, The Patch reported on July 20.

Co-founder of the now-defunct 350 Brewing, Pizer is ready to debut his very own adventure in brewing, Flipside Brewing. The brewery will open Friday, July 29, in the same spot previously occupied by 350, 7144 183rd St. in Tinley Park.

With a lease signed just a few months ago, it's been a race to this fresh start for Pizer and Flipside. If you missed it last week, Pizer told Patch all about his vision for Flipside—cleaner lines, more polished interior, pops of colors, with the same great beers, brewed in-house and of his own creation.

It's been a bit of a winding road for Pizer to end up right back in the same strip mall where he started with 350 in 2014, but it feels right this time he said, and he's sticking to the beers he knows best.

He'll open with American lager Flipside Lager, and Last Stop IPA, akin to his Crook County IPA of 350 days. He'll also offer Filbert's sodas, cocktails, wine, ciders, and non-alcoholic beers.

"My beers were never the problem why I moved on to the next place, it ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ND: Black Paws Brewing already open in Devils Lake
Black Paws Brewing, the first craft brewery in Devils Lake, opened quietly on Friday, July 8. Owner Jeb Oehlke opened the downtown brewery with a goal of bringing something new to Devils Lake, but not just new types of beer, Yahoo News reported on July 20.

"It's a place that's different from any other place," he said. "Just the atmosphere in the building when you come in and sit down — it's just a place that's really comfortable and relaxing to be."

After a busy opening weekend, Oehlke eased into business with a variety of craft beers from regional breweries and familiar flavors like Coors Light while his first round of in-house brews finished brewing and waited to be kegged.

Eventually, he hopes to fill 14 of his 24 taps with his own beer. The first will be his house signature, the "Black Paws Alt," which he describes as a traditional German-style altbier.

Non-alcoholic beverage options include pour-over coffee and Italian sodas. In the future, he plans to make his own syrups for craft sodas like root beer, cream soda and ginger beer.

For food, Oehlke is still working on securing kitchen equipment, so starting out, the menu is limited to frozen pizzas, but he ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Binary Brewing officially opens to public in Beaverton
Binary Brewing officially opened to the public on Tuesday, July 19, at 12375 SW Broadway in Beaverton’s Old Town neighborhood, the Willamette Week reported.

The space may be familiar to anyone who ordered cakes for special occasions at Beaverton Bakery. It used to house the business until it closed in 2018 after nearly a century in operation. The Binary team completely refurbished the building, taking it “down to studs and gravel,” co-owner Josh Johnson tells WW.

The once-tiny brewery—formerly making beer under the Uptown Beer brand—upgraded to a full production facility in order to keep up with demand. The brewery is growing from a 7-barrel brewhouse to a 10-barrel, custom Practical Fusion system—including five 10-barrel unitanks and one 16-barrel tank—enough fermentation vessels to more than quadruple production.

“Brewing these past three years on a very manual 7-barrel system with a limited number of fermenters has been fun, but as our reputation has grown—and especially since we got picked up by Running Man Distribution—demand has outpaced our ability to produce beer,” head brewer and co-owner Roger Wood stated in 2021 when Binary announced the expansion.

Binary’s initial draft lineup, unveiled at a media and industry preview July 18, included a stellar Kölsch, a handful of ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: Foreign beers remain on shelves months after brewers halt sales
The last orders bell tolled for Bud, Carlsberg and Heineken beers in Russia in early March, but shops across Moscow are still selling off stockpiles months after the brewers said they would halt production, Reuters reported on July 22.

The continued availability of unsold stacks of Carlsberg, Anheuser-Busch InBev and Heineken's flagship brands underlines the difficulty Western brands have faced in withdrawing products in response to the conflict in Ukraine.

Their cans and bottles were still on sale in supermarkets and stores in Russia's capital this week, a Reuters review found - an example of how long it can take consumer-focused sanctions or restrictions to have a significant impact.

It was not clear how much inventory Russian retailers have, but for now the supplies are helping to cushion the blow of the tough sanctions which prompted the world's top brewers to turn off the taps to Russia's most popular Western beers.

Carlsberg and Heineken said on March 9 they would stop production and sales of their flagship brands in Russia, joining an exodus of foreign companies after Moscow sent troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24, in what it calls its "special military operation".

Two days later, AB InBev, which runs its Russia operations in a ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Dry weather sees rapid progress with winter barley harvest
Dry weather has seen rapid progress with the winter barley harvest, with more than 69% already complete in England, Wales and Scotland, the Farmers’ Weekly reported on July 22.

This is according to the first AHDB Harvest Progress Report based on data collated by Adas, which points out that the next earliest winter barley harvest was back in 2006.

Looking at the regional level, harvest has started in all areas, with progress ranging from 20% complete in the North West to more than 90% complete in the South West and Eastern regions.

The report also estimates that 28% of the British winter oilseed rape area had been harvested up to 19 July, which is slightly ahead of recent years.

Cutting in the South and East ranges from 50-75% complete while in the West Midlands and further north, harvest is only just starting or not yet under way.

Early barley yield indications are good, with yields from the South trending slightly above the five-year average. The current yield estimate for winter barley is 6.8-7.2t/ha, which is mainly based on data from the South and East of England.

Key results are:

Early yields reported have ranged from 5-9.5t/ha (at below average moisture).

The better yields that have been reported are ...More info on site

Whisky news Russia: Beam Suntory to sell Russia joint venture to local management team
Spirits giant Beam Suntory and its partner Edrington have agreed to sell the Maxxium Russia joint venture business to the local management team, the ESM Magazine reported on July 20.

After suspending shipments to Russia following the invasion of Ukraine in early March, Beam Suntory began reviewing approaches to the future of its Russian business.

The spirits giant believes that the best way to exit the market was through a sale of the Russia joint venture to the local management team.

Shipments from Beam Suntory will remain suspended, the company added, as it continues to abide by all applicable laws, including international sanctions.

In January 2021, Beam Suntory announced plans to move its global headquarters to New York City in mid-2022.

The Jim Beam parent planned to relocate most of its executive leadership team positions, global brand house organisation, and select global corporate function roles to Manhattan.

Elsewhere, Diageo, the world's largest spirits maker, announced plans to wind down its business operations in Russia over the next six months. However, it will retain a business licence there that requires a number of employees to remain, according to Reuters. The spirits giant stopped shipping to and selling goods in Russia in March.

In April, Anheuser-Busch InBev announced plans ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine & Russia: Ukraine and Russia sign UN-backed grain exports deal
Ukraine and Russia have signed a UN-backed deal to allow the export of millions of tonnes of grain from blockaded Black Sea ports, potentially averting the threat of a catastrophic global food crisis, The Guardian reported on July 22.

A signing ceremony at Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul was attended by the UN secretary general, António Guterres, and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey’s president, who had played a key role during months of tense negotiations.

Guterres said in remarks at the ceremony that the deal would open the way to significant volumes of food exports from Ukraine and alleviate a food and economic crisis in the developing world. He said “the beacon of hope was shining bright in the Black Sea” and called on Russia and Ukraine to fully implement the accord.

In Kyiv, there is deep scepticism about Russia’s intentions but Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said Ukraine was trusting in the UN and Turkey to police the agreement.

The aim of the deal is to secure the passage of grain and essential goods such as sunflower oil from three Ukrainian ports, including Odesa, even as the war continues to rage elsewhere in the country. The UN had warned that the ...More info on site
