Singapore: ThaiBev may decide against proceeding with brewery unit listing
|
Thai Beverage may decide not to proceed with its proposed spin-off listing of brewery unit BeerCo on the Singapore Exchange (SGX) mainboard, if the board deems it to not be in the interest of shareholders, the company said in a Friday (Jul 29) bourse filing.
“Accordingly, there is no certainty or assurance that the proposed spin-off listing will materialise in due course, at all, or in the form as described in the May 5 announcement,” the company said.
ThaiBev was responding to a recent international media report by IFR that the BeerCo listing has been “pushed back… to September-October subject to an improvement in market conditions”. The proposed transaction involves a public offering of up to 20 per cent of the total number of issued ordinary shares of BeerCo.
Addressing the report, the company said “no final decision” has been made on the timing of the transaction, and it remains committed to pursuing the transaction, with “form, feasibility, and appropriate timing of listing” evaluated on an ongoing basis. This assessment will take prevailing market conditions into account, among other factors.
ThaiBev had previously received a no-objection letter from SGX for the proposed listing in February 2021, but later deferred the transaction due to market

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria reports results for financial year ended June 2022
|
Guinness Nigeria Plc traded off profit season in the final quarter but galloping growth across three quarters still lifted full year profit twelve and half times to N15.6 billion at full year. A disappointing final quarter added only N350 million to the closing profit of N15.3 billion at the end of the third quarter, The Cable reported on July 31.
The company’s audited financial report for the full year ended June 2022 shows a complete loss of operating speed with which the brewing company built profits of N4 billion in the first quarter, N4.8 billion in the second and N6.5 billion in the third.
The company maintained the pattern of the preceding financial year when it closed with a lower profit figure of N1.25 billion than the N1.84 billion it reported at the end of the third quarter.
The profit dry up in the final quarter is despite that the company raked in sales revenue in excess of N47 billion in the final quarter though it is the lowest quarterly sales figure for the company in the year.
One major cost increase in the final quarter encroached on sales revenue for the period and thinned down profit capacity. This is an administrative

Australia: Tax Office lifts beer excise by 4%
|
Australian drinkers woke up to more than a hangover on August 1 as accelerating inflation and a quirk in the tax system sent the price of beer surging, Bloomberg reported.
In its semi-annual CPI indexation review, the Australian Tax Office lifted the excise on a frothy by 4%. It was the largest increase in over 30 years, according to the Brewers Association of Australia.
“Sadly, we’re now seeing the impact as pub patrons will soon be faced with the prospect of regularly paying around A$15 for a pint at their local,” said John Preston, CEO of the association. “Australians are taxed on beer more than almost any other nation.”
Australia adjusts the excise on beer under a formula linked to inflation, which in the most recent reading climbed at the fastest annual pace in 21 years.
The higher price is likely to add to growing cost-of-living pressures already hurting consumers in the historically beer-loving nation, where inflation is expected to peak at almost 8% by December. The result may encourage consumers to drink more wine, which operates under a different system of taxation.
Escalating consumer prices are likely to see the Reserve Bank of Australia push ahead with further interest rate increases after 125 basis

Japan: Kirin to expand in health care to reduce reliance on beer
|
Kirin Holdings, Japan’s second-largest brewer, is planning to expand in health care to reduce its reliance on beer as it foresees increasing regulation of the alcoholic beverages industry, the Japan Times reported on August 1.
It’s one of the first major players to lay out its plans after the World Health Organization in May called for stricter rules on digital marketing that companies use to promote their products across borders and urged governments to set higher prices to discourage drinking. Kirin’s approach stands in contrast to bigger rivals like Anheuser-Busch InBev and Asahi Group Holdings, who are doubling down on alcohol and investing in higher-end businesses like craft beers.
“I feel that more regulations are to come, and future of the beer business will probably be very difficult,” said Takeshi Minakata, head of the health science business at Tokyo-based Kirin. “There is a certain risk to continue to rely on the alcohol industry forever.”
The company has chosen health care as its next area for growth, and will invest its resources accordingly, Minakata said, acknowledging it may take time. Kirin aims to generate ¥500 billion ($3.8 billion) in health care sales over the next decade by starting contract manufacturing for pharmaceutical ingredients, expanding

Kenya: Beer is most preferred drink among Kenyans - report
|
A new report has determined that beer is the most preferred drink among Kenyans in 2022, the Business Insider Africa reported on July 29.
The East African Breweries PLC (EABL) report revealed that Kenyans increased their uptake of various alcoholic drinks in the financial year ended June 30, 2022, compared to the previous year.
Data from the report showed that Kenyans spent Ksh109.4 billion ($ 11 million) to buy various alcoholic brands in the country. The report stated that this figure represents a 27 per cent increase in the net sale recorded in the previous year.
Further insights from the report also showed that the overall amount Kenyans spent on hard drinks is likely to be higher than the net sale EABL recorded if the net sales of other brewers in the country are considered.
“The group’s net sales were boosted by double-digit growth across all its markets and categories, owing to an improved operating environment as outlets reopened, coupled with sustained investment behind marketing and commercial activities,” the report said.
One exciting highlight from the report indicated that beer was the most preferred drink among Kenyans. According to the report, beer performance was up 27 per cent, aided by the beer recovery in Kenya,

UK: Alcohol-free and low-alcohol beers may be allowed higher ABV percentage
|
A shift in policy waiting sign off by the next UK Prime Minister will see alcohol-free and low-alcohol beers permitted to increase in strength as part of plans to tempt people to cut down their alcohol intake, without the government being seen as running a “nanny-state”, The Drinks Business reported on July 26.
As the no-and low-alcohol sector continues to surge, new plans would see the UK government widen the net for brands by relaxing the ABV limits currently placed upon products.
The proposal is awaiting sign off from the next Prime Minister, though The Times notes that neither Rishi Sunak nor Liz Truss raised objections when the plans were sent to ministers ahead of formal government sign off.
Current government legislation means that ‘no-alcohol’ products must contain no more than 0.05% ABV, while ‘low-alcohol’ products must contain less than 1.2% ABV.
Under the new plans, limits could be raised to as high as 1% ABV for ‘no-alcohol’ and 3% ABV for ‘low-alcohol’ products.
Matt Lambert, CEO of alcohol social responsibility body and marketing regulator the Portman Group, said:
“The Portman Group’s own research with YouGov at the start of the year shows there is a growing appetite for low and no alcohol alternatives with

Malaysia: Heineken Malaysia to raise some of its products prices from August 1
|
Brewer Heineken Malaysia Bhd will be raising some of its product prices from August 1 in the light of rising costs, following in the footsteps of rival Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd, which did so July 1, The Edge Markets reported on July 26.
The move, coupled with the rising inflation pinch felt by consumers, increases the likelihood of the brewers facing poorer demand in the second half of the year.
Nevertheless, analysts say their respective full-year earnings are on track to recover to, or even beat, levels of the pre-Covid-19 year of 2019. They also expect the brewers’ dividends — typically higher than what is generally paid out in the market — to remain intact.
However, with the national budget set to be tabled in parliament on Oct 28 and the government needing to grow income, investors will also be keeping a close eye on whether the brewers will be hit with an excise duty hike. The last effective excise hike was in 2006. In 2016, there was a “rebasing”, with brewers seeing a change from “excise per litre of beverage” to “excise per litre of alcohol in beverage”.
Analysts were not surprised by Heineken’s upcoming price hike.
“Although beer consumption demand enjoys a

Kenya: Keroche Breweries files application against Kenya Revenue Authority
|
Keroche Breweries has filed an application against the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Commissioner General Githii Mburu for disregarding a High Court order to re-open the plant, The Star reported on July 24.
Through H&K law advocates, the firm filed the application at the High Court on Friday under the certificate of urgency.
The firm noted that High Court Judge Alfred Mabeya had on July 14, 2022, issued an order directing KRA to reopen the brewer but the tax agency moved to court on July 18 to seek an order to stop the reopening.
According to Keroche’s lawyers, Lady Justice Abigael Mshilla did not certify KRA’s application not to reopen the brewer and no orders were issued regarding the said application.
The firm noted that the tax agency had failed to honour the said orders.
"The applicant is apprehensive that if this application is not heard on a priority basis, the respondent will continue to deliberately ignore the orders of the court occasioning the applicant's losses.
The lawyers noted that the KRA led by Mburu failed in its application to cause the reopening of Keroche Breweries in compliance with the orders.
KRA closed down the factory over fresh tax arrears last month.

Thailand: Excise Department plans to tax non-alcoholic beers
|
Thailand’s Excise Department has announced that it will tax non-alcoholic beers next year in an effort to prevent rise in the number of new drinkers, The Nation reported on July 25.
According to the Public Health Ministry, consumers regard the non-alcoholic drinks as an alternative to other drinks as they are considerably cheaper due to the lack of tax.
The makers are also able to distribute samples at educational institutes as they are labelled as non-alcoholic.
The department has now completed the HS code and tax rate for the 0-per-cent beers, which will be taxed at more than 14 per cent (regular drinks) but at less than 22 per cent (beer containing alcohol). The draft proposal will now be submitted to the cabinet for approval. The draft includes other products related to alcoholic drink such as beer tablets.
The director claimed that the tax rate will not affect the retail price since the 0-per-cent alcohol beers are being sold for almost the same price as ordinary beers but without the high taxes.

Germany: Bavarian breweries developing contingency plans to switch to alternative energy sources
|
Bavarian breweries concerned about possible gas shortages are developing contingency plans to avoid a complete halt of beer production, reports regional news website inFranken.de.
Munich breweries are considering switching to other energy sources, such as oil or renewables, but these transitions are unlikely to be straightforward and will take time and planning. In most cases, gas is the main source of energy for brewing beer, and so brewers worry that if gas supplies from Russia do not approach previous levels, production could come to a standstill.
“It would be naturally catastrophic for our company and our consumers”, Steffen Marx, founder of Giesinger Bräu, told the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Brewery Hofbräu München is also considering a switch to oil, while the Franziskaner, Spaten and Löwenbräu breweries aim for a transition to renewables.
Other supplies, such as bottles and labels, are also under pressure, Michael Huber from Western German Veltins brewery, told the Handelsblatt newspaper. He recommended to the beer industry to “scale back our demands and live with low margins”. The countries brewery association has already called for a beer price increase of 30 percent, according to the article.
Germany remains highly dependent on Russian gas imports and is struggling to diversify its

Australia: Asahi launches new mid-strength beer
|
Asahi has announced the launch of a new mid-strength beer, Asahi Super Dry 3.5%, which aims to be a crisp and refreshing alternative to the full-strength Asahi Super Dry, The Shout reported on July 27.
The new Asahi Super Dry 3.5% will replace Asahi Soukai, as the premium Japanese beer brand evolves to meet the needs of the ever-growing market for high quality, lower strength drinks options. Already, 29 per cent of Asahi Beverages’ beer sales are from the no, low and mid-strength sector.
Asahi Super Dry 3.5% has distinctive branding to call out the ABV, while showcasing the new beer’s ability to provide the same unmistakable Karakuchi flavour consumers love about full-strength Asahi Super Dry.
Monique DiGregorio, Brand Manager at Asahi Super Dry, said the new beer’s release builds off strong success for the brand in Australia, which has grown since its launch in 1987 to become one of the country’s favourite international beers.
“Asahi Super Dry has continued to accelerate its growth in the Australia market. With this growth, ensuring we have the right approach to our moderation portfolio is crucial. The transition of our mid-strength Asahi beer to the ‘Super Dry’ taste profile is a positive step locally and globally to

France: Condition of maize, spring barley crops deteriorates for second consecutive week
|
The condition of France's maize crop deteriorated sharply for a second consecutive week, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed, in a sign that dry weather in the European Union's biggest grain maize producer is taking a tolls.
An estimated 68% of the grain maize crop was in good or excellent condition in the week to July 25, down from 75% the previous week, 83% in the week to July 11 and 84% in the week to July 4, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal report.
This week's rating compares to a year-earlier score of 90%.
Harvest prospects in France are being watched closely at a time when shipments out of the European Union's main grain maize supplier, Ukraine, are hampered by the war with Russia and when adverse weather is hurting crops in other parts of the world.
More dry and hot weather is forecast in the coming weeks in key European maize growing regions, including France, and is expected to cause further damage to crops already stressed by a dry spring and sweltering temperatures earlier this month.
The condition of spring barley, which was 92% harvested by July 25, further deteriorated to 48% from 50% a week earlier.
In soft wheat, French farmers had harvested 95%
