USA, KY: Beam Suntory to expand capacity at its Booker Noe Distillery
|
Beam Suntory will expand the capacity of its Jim Beam Brands Co. with a $400 million investment at the Booker Noe Distillery in Boston, Kentucky, the Shanken News Daily reported on July 29.
The move will create 50 new jobs at the site, named for master distiller Booker Noe. The company said further details on the expansion project will be forthcoming.
“We are excited about this expansion opportunity at our Booker Noe site, building on our recent investment in the new consumer experience in Clermont, and now expanding production to ensure enough of our premium liquid is available wherever consumers are looking for them,” said Carlo Coppola, managing director of the James B. Beam Distilling Co. “We are still finalizing our plans and will have more details to share very soon.”

USA, CA: Maui Brewing Co. moving ahead with pending acquisition of San Diego’s Modern Times Beer
|
After initially being cautious, Maui Brewing Co. said on July 28 that it’s moving ahead with the pending acquisition of San Diego’s Modern Times Beer out of receivership for $15.3 million, with the takeover on track to close in late October, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Kihei-based Maui Brewing released a statement saying efforts to buy Modern Times are gaining momentum. Those steps include providing operational funding to Modern Times in the interim before the deal closes, according to court documents.
“We are now even more excited in the future of Modern Times,” said Garrett Marrero, chief executive and co-founder of Maui Brewing, in a statement. “The delays were painful for all. However, it was important that we waited until we had made concrete decisions to avoid any further emotional whiplash for our collective teams.”
Maui Brewing traveled a roundabout path to buying Modern Times, which was forced into receivership in March by lead lender California Bank & Trust after its West Coast expansion was derailed by the pandemic.
Maui Brewing emerged as the favorite potential buyer in June when it was named the stalking horse bidder in the court-supervised auction. After three hours and some 70 bids, however, an affiliate of Anaheim-based Brewery

USA, MA: Night Shift Brewing to move majority of its beer production from Everett to Jack’s Abby and Isle Brewers Guild
|
On July 27, Everett-based Night Shift Brewing announced via a lengthy Instagram post that it would be moving the majority of its beer production to Jack’s Abby and Isle Brewers Guild via contract brewing relationships (each of which already brews some of its beers) and likely laying off most of its 12-person production team as of October 1, the Eater Boston reported.
The decade-old brewery cited C02 supply issues as an immediate driving factor behind the decision but discussed other issues the company has been facing in recent years, primarily that it has outgrown its Everett facility, and the pandemic canceled a planned expansion to Philadelphia that would have eased the issues with the original location.
A report in beer publication Good Beer Hunting digs deeper into the decision, detailing a difficult few years for Night Shift: spending millions to accelerate growth but running into hurdles scaling the business, canceling the Philadelphia expansion, selling off its distribution company, and spending a lot to upgrade equipment but not ultimately solving logistical problems at the Everett space. The CO2 issue may have been “the straw that broke the camel’s back,” as Night Shift cofounder Rob Burns told Good Beer Hunting, but deeper issues

USA, NC: Pitt Street Brewery launches in Washington
|
People gathered on Friday, July 22 along the Washington waterfront for the ribbon cutting for Pitt Street Brewery on the Pamlico, witn.com reported.
The ceremony was held as a way to welcome the company to a Washington community that is thriving in the brewing industry.
Brianna Long, General Manager for Pitt Street says, “We definitely want to add to the destination that is going in Washington. There’s already a beer community here that we are adding too. Happy to be a part of it. I think it’s a great place for people to come down to grab a beer, enjoy the water, food trucks, and different restaurants here.”
Two Rivers Alehouse and the Mulberry House are both located near the beautiful waterfront as well.
Darien King, head brewer of Pitt Street, views the opportunity to compete as iron sharpening iron. King says, “Craft beer is very competitive because you always want to be the best at what you do but at the same time there’s not another community that is as inclusive because you only get better when your competitors get better. Them doing great things is going to push us to do great things.”
The beer is brewed at the Pitt Street facility in

USA, OH: Third Eye Brewing wants to open new Hamilton location as soon as absolutely possible
|
Third Eye Brewing co-owner Tom Collins said while the target is to open the Hamilton location in 2023, they want to open "as soon as absolutely possible", Yahoo News reported on July 25.
The need for the second location is because they're running out of space at their Sharonville location on Chester Road, he said.
"For us, there's a lot of demand, and we don't have a lot of supply, so as soon as we can get up and start producing in a larger production facility, the better it is for us," said Collins, but acknowledges the realities of the market with supply chain and labor issues.
It was announced at the annual State of the City Address in May that Third Eye Brewing, a popular brewery in Northern Cincinnati, chose to open a second location in Hamilton. It adds to a growing industry in Butler County's capital city.
"We were looking all around at some different places, but Hamilton specifically, there's a lot of energy and a lot of interesting things going on," Collins said.
He said the community of businesses ― including the breweries and bars like Municipal Brew Works, Fretboard and Casual Pint, and the megacomplex of Spooky Nook at Champion Mill

USA, NJ: Birdsmouth Beer planning to open in Oceanport this fall
|
Not only does Netflix plan to open a massive film production studio at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey a microbrewery will open there this fall as well, the Patch.com reported on July 26.
The brewery will be called Birdsmouth Beer and they announced this week they are leasing a 12,080-square-foot space at 675 Oceanport Way in Oceanport.
They are planning a fall opening. Right now, the building is completely under construction.
Several years ago, there was talk of a brewery opening at Fort Monmouth, but those plans fell through. Birdsmouth Beer is an entirely new brewery that has never launched before.
It bills itself as "Jersey's all-lager craft brewery" and is headed by co-founder Andrew Gioia, the former head brewer at Kane Brewing in Ocean Township, and real estate executive Rocco Laginestra. The brewery plans a full beer-brewing production facility on site, as well as a tasting room "to create a one-of-a-kind experience for craft beer enthusiasts and casual visitors alike."
Fort Monmouth is a sprawling 1,127-acre former U.S. Army base that straddles the towns of Tinton Falls, Oceanport and Eatontown. The U.S. Army closed the base in 2011, and acres and acres of land have sat empty ever since, with literally tumbleweeds blowing through the

USA, CA: Burning Sun Brewing Company now open in Clovis
|
A new craft beer business is now open in Clovis, ABC30.com reported on August 3.
Burning Sun Brewing Company is a production-only brewery.
The team makes cans and kegs of their own local brews.
The owners first met in high school and did "home-brewing" for more than a decade.
They believe now is the time to start their project in Clovis.
"For us, we focus on making high-quality beers," says owner Matt Denson. "We'll do a lot of different styles."
The company's first brew is called "First Degree Summer Blonde Ale."
The owners say they're now working on an I-P-A and a cream ale.

USA, OR: West Coast Grocery brewing company to close for good at the end of August
|
On July 26th, exactly 4 years to the date since West Coast Grocery brewing company celebrated their grand opening at 1403 SE Stark in Portland, Oregon, the company said it will close for good at the end of this summer, joining other recently defunct Oregon brands like Vagabond Brewing, the New School Beer + Cider reported.
The embattled brewpub was one of the most anticipated new openings of both 2017 and then again in 2018 after over a year of construction delays.
West Coast Grocery will close their business at the end of August and you can enjoy their beer, ambiance, and eats up until then as they close out the taps.

USA, NY: Ledge Hill Brewing Co. chooses Ticonderoga Area as their new location
|
The void on Ticonderoga’s Montcalm Street when Libby’s Bakery Cafe closed has been deeply felt in the community, the locked doors, darkened windows, and wasted potential troublesome to any onlooker, the Sun Community News reported on July 24.
However, a good space doesn’t stay vacant long, something generally grows. Such is the case, with a perfect confluence of events bringing a new ray of sunshine to the heart of downtown. Ledge Hill Brewing Co., formerly of Westport, N.Y., will be the newest star Ticonderoga welcomes to the ongoing business revival.
“The community is excited to welcome the brewery as this type of business has been something we have heard, from many local community members and visitors we needed,” said Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Matt Courtright.
“Ledge Hill Brewery’s decision to choose the Ticonderoga Area as their new location is another big step forward in the region’s economic growth. We feel the traffic they will bring to Ticonderoga will benefit all of the surrounding businesses.”
And as for the newest occupant of 92 Montcalm Street, he’s equally as enthusiastic and hopes his brewery will enrich and enhance the town of Ticonderoga and become a must-visit landmark to all who pass

USA, WA: Ghostfish Brewing Company beverages soon to be produced locally
|
Popular Seattle-based Ghostfish Brewing Company beverages will soon be produced locally when a new East Coast processing and distribution center opens within the existing vacant space at the Grape Discovery Center. The County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency (CCIDA) Board of Directors passed a resolution today authorizing AL Tech Revolving Loan Fund Loans for 3811 Holdings, LLC dba Ghostfish Brewing Company East. Financing will support working capital and equipment purchases for the new brewery location, the Observer Today reported on July 27.
“As the largest dedicated gluten-free brewery in the US, Ghostfish Brewing Company has built a customer base that is extremely loyal,” stated Kristine Morabito, CCIDA Project Manager. “A well-established business, they are currently distributing to 17 US States and two Canadian Provinces.”
Ghostfish Brewing Company “East,” will use the new location to satisfy the steadily increasing demand for Ghostfish products, specifically Canadian territories and US States east of the Mississippi River.
Ghostfish offers a diverse array of beers with six year-round beers, several rotating seasonal varieties, and several special releases. The brand has won over 23 medals in highly competitive beer competitions, including six Great American Beer Fest medals and three awards in non-gluten-free categories. USA, MD: Pickett Brewing Company to open in Pigtown in the coming weeks
|
Pickett Brewing Company will open in the coming weeks at 1130 S. Paca St. in Pigtown. Pickett takes over a 6,500 sq. ft. warehouse that was previously used for industrial storage, SouthBMore.com reported on July 28.
Pickett Brewing is owned by home brewer, United States Coast Guard veteran, and former IT professional Jason Howard alongside Kate Conway, who worked in nonprofit operations. Howard and Conway are neighbors in Baltimore County. Howard will handle brewing at Pickett and Conway will run operations.
Pickett Brewing is named after the street Conway and Howard live on. They both joked that if Howard’s garage door was open, neighbors knew he was in there brewing beer. The logo for Pickett Brewing has Howard’s garage on the left and the glass garage door of the brewery on the right.
Howard is friends with the landlord who convinced Howard to take a look at the Pigtown warehouse. He saw the large garage door on the front and immediately felt the same “open garage door vibe.” The owners also like being in a walkable neighborhood like Pigtown and being close to the stadiums, the growing entertainment district around Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, and Federal Hill.
Howard and Conway also like being in an

USA, PA: Animated Brewing Company expanding with a second location
|
Animated Brewing Company is expanding with a second location at 306 West 1st Avenue in Parkesburg, the Breweries in PA reported on July 31.
Located just a few minutes from Victory Beer, this new space has an ETA of September 2022 for opening.
This 1,200 sq/ft former gas station from the 1930s is about 15 minutes from their primary brewery in Coatesville. We recently spoke with co-owner Jared Castaldi to learn more about the new location, and what beer fans can expect.
The space has seating for around 35 people, with about 12 seats at their new 8-tap bar. There are two big garage doors that open up to a patio outside with 8 big tables for more seating.
All Animated Brewing can and bottle releases will be at this location for takeout, and the bar will also serve local PA cocktails and wine.
For food, Animated Brewing will not have a kitchen on-site but instead will be working with food trucks. The brewery is also in talks with a local restaurant to possibly handle the food.
The space is currently under construction, with both plumbing and electric being added.

USA, SC: BridgeWay Brewing Co. coming to BridgeWay Station in Mauldin
|
Visitors to BridgeWay Station in Mauldin will have another place to grab a pint, the Upstate Business Journal reported on July 28.
Hughes Investment Inc., the company developing BridgeWay Station, announced July 28 the mixed-use development will welcome BridgeWay Brewing Co., a brewery concept by entrepreneur Nate Tomforde.
Encompassing more than 6,000 square feet on the corner of the development’s Main Street and BridgeWay Boulevard, the restaurant and bar will feature a full brewery onsite, as well as four duckpin bowling lanes.
“We jumped at the chance to bring our latest brewery concept to BridgeWay Station,” says Tomforde. “Everything we do is centered around community and creating gathering spaces where everyone feels welcome. This new development is going to be such an asset to Mauldin and we’re thrilled to be part of something that connects people from across the Upstate.”
BridgeWay Brewing Co. is also part of BridgeWay Station’s first phase of development, which began in April 2021.

USA, TX: Starbase Brewing already open in South Austin
|
A new brewery, Starbase Brewing, is now in South Austin. Starbase opened at 4700 Burleson Road in the McKinney neighborhood as of June 5, the Eater Austin reported on July 28.
According to its website, Starbase was founded by a group of engineers who are passionate about beer and colonizing Mars (it was originally called Boca Chica Brewing, and it is not officially affiliated with SpaceX). To whit, its mission outlines a plan to donate one percent of the profits to science education, have the taproom serve as a “gathering spot for the space community,” and eventually develop tactics to brew beer on Mars. (Starbase also calls itself the “Official Brewery of Mars,” although this does not appear to be grounded in any actual designation.)
For now, Starbase offers several beers with more to come. There’s the Lucky Launch Day, a Mexican lager; the Of Kölsch I Still Love you, a honey kölsch; the Terraformer, a red ale; the Starhopped and the Moon Base Alpha, hazy IPAs; and more. The brewery’s mission states that it will use all renewable energy and offset its carbon.
Starbase took over the spot vacated by Orf Brewing, which closed in May 2021.

USA, WA: Two more breweries slated to open in Bellingham’s Sunnyland neighborhood
|
The Sunnyland neighborhood in Bellingham is starting to look a lot like Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. There may be no other place on earth that enjoys such a dense population of breweries as Ballard, but Sunnyland is definitely an up-and-comer. It’s currently home to five breweries with two more slated to open soon, all within walking distance of each other, the Washington Beer Blog reported on July 25.
One is a new location for a long-trusted brewery, while the other is an entirely new enterprise.
The North Fork Brewery, a self-described brewery, pizzeria, and beer shrine, is located along Highway 542 about 20 miles northeast of Bellingham. It is familiar to skiers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts headed to and from Mount Baker. Also, the brewery is familiar to beer geeks who consider it a pilgrimage to visit the Beer Shrine.
The brewery is poised to open a taproom in Bellingham in the former home of the Mt. Baker Foundry, creating much easier and more immediate access to its beers. This will be a taproom only, with no brewery or pizzeria. Just beer. The location is at the corner of Ohio Street and Grant Street.

Madison's largest craft brewery Ale Asylum has closed its doors after 16 years of business and being a pioneer for craft brewery industry in the city, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on July 27.
The company announced its closure on social media on July 22.
"We began with a dream and bag of hops in May of 2006," the post said. "The past couple years have been difficult for all business but with your support we were able to weather the storm. However, under circumstances we cannot control we have made the decision to close our doors."
The closure comes after the company nearly shut down in October last year while looking for a buyer.
Wisconsin State Journal reported that Ale Asylum ended up closing the kitchen but kept the taproom open, selling beers like Hopalicious, Ambergeddon and more.
Ale Asylum co-founder Otto Dilba told the State Journal that they had secured a buyer, and would reopen the kitchen and expand their portfolio of beers after the purchase, but that purchase fell through.
“The situation just didn’t turn out the way everyone had hoped with the buyer,” Dilba told the State Journal. “We had worked for the past several months to get

USA, OH: Shale Brewing Co. permanently closes
|
Shale Brewing Co. has permanently closed.
In an announcement posted to Facebook on July 22, the brewery thanked staff, customers and friends for their support, The Repository reported.
"We have greatly enjoyed being a part of the fabric of this community and all the good that came out of it," the post said.
Owner Jeff Joliat said the brewery closed for "three factors: Decrease in business, increase in costs and lack of staff."
Joliat said the business has been in talks to sell, and those talks will continue. They are "continuing to entertain offers," with five parties at various phases.
He was happy to report that the sister company Shale Craft Coffee, which is a separate business, is "booming and will continue to operate."
The Facebook post urged followers to continue to support local business, specifically local breweries, and the North Canton Cares Food Pantry, as well as other causes in the area.
The post garnered about 400 reactions, many of which were sadness and shock. Comments flowed in stating how people loved the brewery and would miss it, and how people were shocked by the news.

Singapore: ThaiBev may decide against proceeding with brewery unit listing
|
Thai Beverage may decide not to proceed with its proposed spin-off listing of brewery unit BeerCo on the Singapore Exchange (SGX) mainboard, if the board deems it to not be in the interest of shareholders, the company said in a Friday (Jul 29) bourse filing.
“Accordingly, there is no certainty or assurance that the proposed spin-off listing will materialise in due course, at all, or in the form as described in the May 5 announcement,” the company said.
ThaiBev was responding to a recent international media report by IFR that the BeerCo listing has been “pushed back… to September-October subject to an improvement in market conditions”. The proposed transaction involves a public offering of up to 20 per cent of the total number of issued ordinary shares of BeerCo.
Addressing the report, the company said “no final decision” has been made on the timing of the transaction, and it remains committed to pursuing the transaction, with “form, feasibility, and appropriate timing of listing” evaluated on an ongoing basis. This assessment will take prevailing market conditions into account, among other factors.
ThaiBev had previously received a no-objection letter from SGX for the proposed listing in February 2021, but later deferred the transaction due to market

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria reports results for financial year ended June 2022
|
Guinness Nigeria Plc traded off profit season in the final quarter but galloping growth across three quarters still lifted full year profit twelve and half times to N15.6 billion at full year. A disappointing final quarter added only N350 million to the closing profit of N15.3 billion at the end of the third quarter, The Cable reported on July 31.
The company’s audited financial report for the full year ended June 2022 shows a complete loss of operating speed with which the brewing company built profits of N4 billion in the first quarter, N4.8 billion in the second and N6.5 billion in the third.
The company maintained the pattern of the preceding financial year when it closed with a lower profit figure of N1.25 billion than the N1.84 billion it reported at the end of the third quarter.
The profit dry up in the final quarter is despite that the company raked in sales revenue in excess of N47 billion in the final quarter though it is the lowest quarterly sales figure for the company in the year.
One major cost increase in the final quarter encroached on sales revenue for the period and thinned down profit capacity. This is an administrative

France: Condition of maize, spring barley crops deteriorates for second consecutive week
|
The condition of France's maize crop deteriorated sharply for a second consecutive week, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed, in a sign that dry weather in the European Union's biggest grain maize producer is taking a tolls.
An estimated 68% of the grain maize crop was in good or excellent condition in the week to July 25, down from 75% the previous week, 83% in the week to July 11 and 84% in the week to July 4, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal report.
This week's rating compares to a year-earlier score of 90%.
Harvest prospects in France are being watched closely at a time when shipments out of the European Union's main grain maize supplier, Ukraine, are hampered by the war with Russia and when adverse weather is hurting crops in other parts of the world.
More dry and hot weather is forecast in the coming weeks in key European maize growing regions, including France, and is expected to cause further damage to crops already stressed by a dry spring and sweltering temperatures earlier this month.
The condition of spring barley, which was 92% harvested by July 25, further deteriorated to 48% from 50% a week earlier.
In soft wheat, French farmers had harvested 95%

Australia: Tax Office lifts beer excise by 4%
|
Australian drinkers woke up to more than a hangover on August 1 as accelerating inflation and a quirk in the tax system sent the price of beer surging, Bloomberg reported.
In its semi-annual CPI indexation review, the Australian Tax Office lifted the excise on a frothy by 4%. It was the largest increase in over 30 years, according to the Brewers Association of Australia.
“Sadly, we’re now seeing the impact as pub patrons will soon be faced with the prospect of regularly paying around A$15 for a pint at their local,” said John Preston, CEO of the association. “Australians are taxed on beer more than almost any other nation.”
Australia adjusts the excise on beer under a formula linked to inflation, which in the most recent reading climbed at the fastest annual pace in 21 years.
The higher price is likely to add to growing cost-of-living pressures already hurting consumers in the historically beer-loving nation, where inflation is expected to peak at almost 8% by December. The result may encourage consumers to drink more wine, which operates under a different system of taxation.
Escalating consumer prices are likely to see the Reserve Bank of Australia push ahead with further interest rate increases after 125 basis

Japan: Kirin to expand in health care to reduce reliance on beer
|
Kirin Holdings, Japan’s second-largest brewer, is planning to expand in health care to reduce its reliance on beer as it foresees increasing regulation of the alcoholic beverages industry, the Japan Times reported on August 1.
It’s one of the first major players to lay out its plans after the World Health Organization in May called for stricter rules on digital marketing that companies use to promote their products across borders and urged governments to set higher prices to discourage drinking. Kirin’s approach stands in contrast to bigger rivals like Anheuser-Busch InBev and Asahi Group Holdings, who are doubling down on alcohol and investing in higher-end businesses like craft beers.
“I feel that more regulations are to come, and future of the beer business will probably be very difficult,” said Takeshi Minakata, head of the health science business at Tokyo-based Kirin. “There is a certain risk to continue to rely on the alcohol industry forever.”
The company has chosen health care as its next area for growth, and will invest its resources accordingly, Minakata said, acknowledging it may take time. Kirin aims to generate ¥500 billion ($3.8 billion) in health care sales over the next decade by starting contract manufacturing for pharmaceutical ingredients, expanding

Kenya: Beer is most preferred drink among Kenyans - report
|
A new report has determined that beer is the most preferred drink among Kenyans in 2022, the Business Insider Africa reported on July 29.
The East African Breweries PLC (EABL) report revealed that Kenyans increased their uptake of various alcoholic drinks in the financial year ended June 30, 2022, compared to the previous year.
Data from the report showed that Kenyans spent Ksh109.4 billion ($ 11 million) to buy various alcoholic brands in the country. The report stated that this figure represents a 27 per cent increase in the net sale recorded in the previous year.
Further insights from the report also showed that the overall amount Kenyans spent on hard drinks is likely to be higher than the net sale EABL recorded if the net sales of other brewers in the country are considered.
“The group’s net sales were boosted by double-digit growth across all its markets and categories, owing to an improved operating environment as outlets reopened, coupled with sustained investment behind marketing and commercial activities,” the report said.
One exciting highlight from the report indicated that beer was the most preferred drink among Kenyans. According to the report, beer performance was up 27 per cent, aided by the beer recovery in Kenya,

UK: Alcohol-free and low-alcohol beers may be allowed higher ABV percentage
|
A shift in policy waiting sign off by the next UK Prime Minister will see alcohol-free and low-alcohol beers permitted to increase in strength as part of plans to tempt people to cut down their alcohol intake, without the government being seen as running a “nanny-state”, The Drinks Business reported on July 26.
As the no-and low-alcohol sector continues to surge, new plans would see the UK government widen the net for brands by relaxing the ABV limits currently placed upon products.
The proposal is awaiting sign off from the next Prime Minister, though The Times notes that neither Rishi Sunak nor Liz Truss raised objections when the plans were sent to ministers ahead of formal government sign off.
Current government legislation means that ‘no-alcohol’ products must contain no more than 0.05% ABV, while ‘low-alcohol’ products must contain less than 1.2% ABV.
Under the new plans, limits could be raised to as high as 1% ABV for ‘no-alcohol’ and 3% ABV for ‘low-alcohol’ products.
Matt Lambert, CEO of alcohol social responsibility body and marketing regulator the Portman Group, said:
“The Portman Group’s own research with YouGov at the start of the year shows there is a growing appetite for low and no alcohol alternatives with

Malaysia: Heineken Malaysia to raise some of its products prices from August 1
|
Brewer Heineken Malaysia Bhd will be raising some of its product prices from August 1 in the light of rising costs, following in the footsteps of rival Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd, which did so July 1, The Edge Markets reported on July 26.
The move, coupled with the rising inflation pinch felt by consumers, increases the likelihood of the brewers facing poorer demand in the second half of the year.
Nevertheless, analysts say their respective full-year earnings are on track to recover to, or even beat, levels of the pre-Covid-19 year of 2019. They also expect the brewers’ dividends — typically higher than what is generally paid out in the market — to remain intact.
However, with the national budget set to be tabled in parliament on Oct 28 and the government needing to grow income, investors will also be keeping a close eye on whether the brewers will be hit with an excise duty hike. The last effective excise hike was in 2006. In 2016, there was a “rebasing”, with brewers seeing a change from “excise per litre of beverage” to “excise per litre of alcohol in beverage”.
Analysts were not surprised by Heineken’s upcoming price hike.
“Although beer consumption demand enjoys a

Kenya: Keroche Breweries files application against Kenya Revenue Authority
|
Keroche Breweries has filed an application against the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Commissioner General Githii Mburu for disregarding a High Court order to re-open the plant, The Star reported on July 24.
Through H&K law advocates, the firm filed the application at the High Court on Friday under the certificate of urgency.
The firm noted that High Court Judge Alfred Mabeya had on July 14, 2022, issued an order directing KRA to reopen the brewer but the tax agency moved to court on July 18 to seek an order to stop the reopening.
According to Keroche’s lawyers, Lady Justice Abigael Mshilla did not certify KRA’s application not to reopen the brewer and no orders were issued regarding the said application.
The firm noted that the tax agency had failed to honour the said orders.
"The applicant is apprehensive that if this application is not heard on a priority basis, the respondent will continue to deliberately ignore the orders of the court occasioning the applicant's losses.
The lawyers noted that the KRA led by Mburu failed in its application to cause the reopening of Keroche Breweries in compliance with the orders.
KRA closed down the factory over fresh tax arrears last month.

Thailand: Excise Department plans to tax non-alcoholic beers
|
Thailand’s Excise Department has announced that it will tax non-alcoholic beers next year in an effort to prevent rise in the number of new drinkers, The Nation reported on July 25.
According to the Public Health Ministry, consumers regard the non-alcoholic drinks as an alternative to other drinks as they are considerably cheaper due to the lack of tax.
The makers are also able to distribute samples at educational institutes as they are labelled as non-alcoholic.
The department has now completed the HS code and tax rate for the 0-per-cent beers, which will be taxed at more than 14 per cent (regular drinks) but at less than 22 per cent (beer containing alcohol). The draft proposal will now be submitted to the cabinet for approval. The draft includes other products related to alcoholic drink such as beer tablets.
The director claimed that the tax rate will not affect the retail price since the 0-per-cent alcohol beers are being sold for almost the same price as ordinary beers but without the high taxes.

Germany: Bavarian breweries developing contingency plans to switch to alternative energy sources
|
Bavarian breweries concerned about possible gas shortages are developing contingency plans to avoid a complete halt of beer production, reports regional news website inFranken.de.
Munich breweries are considering switching to other energy sources, such as oil or renewables, but these transitions are unlikely to be straightforward and will take time and planning. In most cases, gas is the main source of energy for brewing beer, and so brewers worry that if gas supplies from Russia do not approach previous levels, production could come to a standstill.
“It would be naturally catastrophic for our company and our consumers”, Steffen Marx, founder of Giesinger Bräu, told the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Brewery Hofbräu München is also considering a switch to oil, while the Franziskaner, Spaten and Löwenbräu breweries aim for a transition to renewables.
Other supplies, such as bottles and labels, are also under pressure, Michael Huber from Western German Veltins brewery, told the Handelsblatt newspaper. He recommended to the beer industry to “scale back our demands and live with low margins”. The countries brewery association has already called for a beer price increase of 30 percent, according to the article.
Germany remains highly dependent on Russian gas imports and is struggling to diversify its

Australia: Asahi launches new mid-strength beer
|
Asahi has announced the launch of a new mid-strength beer, Asahi Super Dry 3.5%, which aims to be a crisp and refreshing alternative to the full-strength Asahi Super Dry, The Shout reported on July 27.
The new Asahi Super Dry 3.5% will replace Asahi Soukai, as the premium Japanese beer brand evolves to meet the needs of the ever-growing market for high quality, lower strength drinks options. Already, 29 per cent of Asahi Beverages’ beer sales are from the no, low and mid-strength sector.
Asahi Super Dry 3.5% has distinctive branding to call out the ABV, while showcasing the new beer’s ability to provide the same unmistakable Karakuchi flavour consumers love about full-strength Asahi Super Dry.
Monique DiGregorio, Brand Manager at Asahi Super Dry, said the new beer’s release builds off strong success for the brand in Australia, which has grown since its launch in 1987 to become one of the country’s favourite international beers.
“Asahi Super Dry has continued to accelerate its growth in the Australia market. With this growth, ensuring we have the right approach to our moderation portfolio is crucial. The transition of our mid-strength Asahi beer to the ‘Super Dry’ taste profile is a positive step locally and globally to
