Brewery news Canada, BC: Railside Brewing launches in Kelowna’s brewery district
A new community-minded brewery is now open in Kelowna’s brewery district, the Canadian Beer News reported on August 12.

Railside Brewing has been founded by long-time friends and homebrewers Rob Leinemann and Matt Grieve, and is located in a building owned by Leinemann’s family along the Okanagan Rail Trail.

Open to the public since last Friday August 5th, Railside has eight beers pouring to enjoy in the brewery tasting room and on the pet-friendly patio. Light snacks including chips and salsa, pepperoni, and hummus are available in the tasting room, and food trucks are on hand at select times to serve more substantial meals.

In an interview with Castanet, the owners noted that they have a permit that will allow them to host up to ten special events a year on the parking lot adjacent to the brewery, and they intend to hold several fundraising events for the Rail Trail each year.

Railside Brewing is located at 1186 High Road in Kelowna, and is open daily with the exception of Monday.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Point Brewing slated to open in Point Edward before patio season ends
Sarnia-Lambton might not pop as a craft beer destination in the way that, for example, the Niagara Region does. But with a 10th brewery opening within weeks, the Imperial City and its neighbouring municipalities can’t be ignored as a brewcation creation. There’s an unofficial ale trail waiting for you from Corunna on the St. Clair River to Grand Bend on Lake Huron, the Cochrane Times-Post reported on .

Newest, and slated to open before patio season ends, is Point Brewing in Point Edward. It’s a brotherhood of brothers-in-law Claudio Palleschi, David Kruger and Scott Dunn opening in a former Beer Store at 705 Lite St.

“It’s an awesome benefit joining the cluster of amazing breweries, cideries and wineries coming out of Lambton County,” Kruger said. “They’ve all been welcoming and helping us along the way to get established and to combine to make this area a destination to experience.”

Palleschi, a noted homebrewer who’s been making beer in his garage and basement for years, is the head brewer and has been busy creating six beers with local hooks for Point’s opening.

On tap by the glass, in growlers if supplied by customers, and in 355-millilitre cans will be:

Brewery news USA, TX: Wicked Boxer Brewing closing its doors this weekend
After nearly five years in business, Wicked Boxer Brewing is closing its doors this weekend, marking the latest move in a string of Houston beer world shake-ups, .

The Cypress brewery originally opened in December 2017 and moved to Barker Cypress Road in 2020, where it will pour pints for one last week until it shuts off the taps on Aug. 21. The owners, Brian and Jamie Cain, announced the closure on social media.

"Our founder & CEO, Rogue, has made the decision to retire," read identical posts on Facebook and Instagram. "He's tired of having to clean up after Brian's messes."

Rogue isn't your typical biped CEO. Rather, he's one of two black boxer dogs, with his buddy Rebel, who have served as mascots and tongue-in-cheek inspiration for the brewery throughout the years.

It's been an eventful few months for the Houston area's beer scene. Bearded Fox and City Acre had both planned to close but were bought by a new owner at the last minute. The owners of Equal Parts bought Brash, and Holler and Local Group breweries also recently changed hands. There's been new blood, too, such as Frost Town downtown.

Ahead of their last day, Wicked Boxer is pouring all the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Combustion Brewing opens second location in Columbus
Columbus Ohio’s Combustion Brewing just opened its second location in the Clintonville neighborhood. Customers can expect to enjoy a wide variety of fresh craft beer and cider all made by Combustion, the Craft Brewing Business reported on August 15.

“Fresh, Balanced, Drinkable is our mantra” says co-owner Keith Jackson. “We are ecstatic to open the doors of our second location to the public. Providing the freshest and highest quality craft beer and cider to the Clintonville and surrounding communities is something we’ve been working towards the past few months.”

The Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting on Aug. 13 was visited by the Clintonville Area Business Association.

“It’s been great getting acquainted with members of the Clintonville Area Business Association, meeting members of the community, and participating in Third Thursday’s with the CRC while we prepare for our opening in Clintonville,” says co-owner Sarah Jackson.

The Clintonville Taproom will maintain a wide variety of beer and cider on tap as well as 16oz 4-pack cans, 32oz crowler cans, and 64oz growlers of specialty beers to-go. In support of neighboring businesses, customers will be able to order food from local restaurants right from their table in the Taproom. Light snacks available at the bar.

Brewery news USA, MN: Bucks Mill Brewing present its beers to the public on Saturday, August 20
Saturday, August 20 will present the first opportunity to sample beers from Detroit Lakes’ newest brewery, Bucks Mill Brewing, the Lakes Area Radio reported on August 16.

The brewery plans to bring four beers to the Detroit Lakes Craft Beer Tour at the Washington Ballpark, Saturday, August 20. The event, in its fourth year features more than 100 craft beers to sample from a variety of regional breweries.

Bucks Mill Brewing will have two blondes to sample - Ole and Lena. “We spiced Lena with Lemongrass and it gives it a nice tea-like flavor,” said Tyler Hawkins, Head Brewer at Bucks Mill Brewing. “Ole is more a crisp, light beer – a crowd pleaser.” The Hazy, made with Mosaic and Citra, and a Red Ale round out the beers the brewery plans to bring to the event.

And if the final inspection process happens as anticipated, Bucks Mill Brewing’s downtown location may be open by this weekend.

“We’re at the point now where there’s just some finishing touches to be done in the building, but then we also have a series of inspections to be done this week,” said Henry Van Offelen, one of the brewery’s founders. “If those inspections are done and completed, ...More info on site

Hops news The Netherlands: Production of hops in greenhouses explored in the Netherlands
Holland Hops and Inholland University of Applied Sciences are exploring production of hops in greenhouses for use in local beers, RMI Analytics said in their early August report.

The group created the Hollandse Hop RAAK SME research project with Wageningen University and Research, the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Hogeschool Leiden and several other companies. So far, results show hops can be effectively grown in greenhouses, however, the cultivation efficiency still has to be tweaked, especially due to high current energy costs.

The team is looking at sustainable heating methods which could solve this challenge in the future.

Brewery news Belgium: Legendary monastery brewer Westvleteren to start labelling their bottles for the first time in 75 years
Monastery brewer Westvleteren, whose legendary beers are produced by monks in the Sint-Sixtus abbey in West Flanders, are to label their bottles for the first time in 75 years, The Brussels Times reported on August 13.

The brewery produces three of Belgium’s celebrated Trappist beers, named after the order or monks who run the abbey. Trappist beers – the appellation is strictly limited to those beers that meet the stringent conditions laid down by the International Trappist Association (ITA). As a result only 13 monasteries now have the right to use the appellation – Achel was dropped when its population of living monks dropped to zero.

As well as the Belgian monasteries, there are Trappist breweries in the Netherlands (Koningshoeven, La Trappe and Zundert, Maria Toevlucht); the US (St Joseph’s , now closed), Austria (Stift Engelszell), Italy (Tre Fontane), England (St Bernard Abbey), France (Mont des Cats) and Spain (Cerveza Cardeña).

Admirers of the Westvleteren beer itself will experience no change. The new development is cosmetic. The new labels allow consumers to differentiate the four varieties at a glance – not as handy as it might seem, since the beers are rarely on open sale. But the labels will contain all manner of ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Spring malting barley crop showing good grain quality
Spring malting barley harvested crops are showing good grain quality with low nitrogen levels and better-than-expected yields, despite the very dry spring and summer and a very early harvest, the Farmers’ Weekly reported on August 12.

Most crops are coming in with grain nitrogen levels below 1.85% in line with maltsters’ needs, and despite often very thin crops, grain weights have been heavy in terms of specific weight, helping to boost overall yields.

Bob King, commercial director of the Crisp Malting Group, says the malting industry needs a big crop as there is little by way of carryover stocks from the previous season, and a good quality spring crop has followed a quality winter malting crop.

“The spring crop is surprisingly good, much better than expected, and everything we have seen is useable, says Mr King, whose company has maltings in East Anglia and Scotland.

With many of southern and eastern English crops now cut and harvest under way as far north as Morayshire in northern Scotland, the nationwide picture is of surprisingly good yields, low nitrogens and high specific weights.

The prospect of a big high-quality malting crop has seen malting premiums over feed barley narrow to £55-60/t, and this could narrow further as ...More info on site
