Japan & North America: Japan’s Asahi considering full-scale entry into North American market
|
Japan beverage giant Asahi Group Holdings Ltd is considering full-scale entry into the North American market, its chief executive said on August 18.
Japan's largest beer maker is considering the push after pausing major acquisitions in the past couple years to pay down debts acquired in buying sprees in Europe and Australia, said Atsushi Katsuki, who stepped into the leadership role last year.
The company's brands include flagship Asahi Super Dry and a number of European labels including Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Pilsner Urquell and Grolsch.
"North America is the best and largest market," said Katsuki, who previously served as chief financial officer and ran Asahi's operations in Australia.
"We haven't been able to find many opportunities at the moment, but I think there are various forms of entry."
Asahi currently has no alcohol production subsidiaries in North America, and does not break out results from the market, describing its revenue there as "slight".
The company would consider brand acquisitions or working with start-up companies in the region, Katsuki said.
The company also plans to aggressively promote product launches in the non-alcoholic and low-alcohol markets that are proving increasingly popular worldwide, he said.

USA, MT: Mt. Ascension Brewing Company opens its doors to public
|
Helena’s newest brewery, Mt. Ascension Brewing Company, opened its doors to the public on Saturday, August 13th, KTVH reported.
Some of the brewery’s biggest selling points are the fantastic 180-degree view of Mt. Helena, the surrounding mountains, and the picturesque downtown Helena.
“We're bringing this view to Helena, and we get to share it with the public and that's really amazing. You know, there are a lot of private buildings here that have this type of view, but we’re so excited to share it with the public here,” says Becky Peppelman, Head Brewer & General Manager at Mt. Ascension Brewing.
But the new place isn’t all just looks. They’re working to give back to and work alongside the city it’s just joined. For example, 2% of sales of their Happy Trails IPA is donated to the Prickly Pear Land Trust. And they’ve partnered with their soon-to-be neighbors, Montago Coffee to create a coffee stout.
Rob Lehrkind, owner of Julius Lehrkind Brewing in Bozeman and Big Spring Brewing in Lewistown approached Becky Peppelman about working on this project. Peppelman has been working in the brewing industry for nearly 20 years and brewing commercially for almost 15 years.

USA, OR: Standing Stone Brewing owners put entire operation up for sale

One of 2022’s more heart-breaking closures was Ashland, Oregon’s Standing Stone Brewing which was one of only 2 breweries in the city known for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Southern Oregon University. The good news is that the owners have opted to put the entire operation up for sale, restaurant, bar, and brewery all available turnkey in a desirable area of downtown with 2 additional retail spaces included in a purchase, the New School Beer reported on August 19.
Ashland, Oregon has a growing population of 21,616 as of 2020, and recent statistics show an average of 400,000+ tourists visit the city each year. It has been clear for a very long time that the area could support another modern brewpub closer in business model to those of the larger cities. Standing Stone Brewing was nearly 26 years old, and Ashland’s only other brewery Caldera Brewing is 25 years old.

USA, AL: Ghost Train Brewing Co. moving out, Uproot Brewing to take over location on Birmingham’s 3rd Avenue South
|
Long-time Birmingham brewery Ghost Train Brewing Co. announced that they will be leaving their original location on 3rd Avenue South to focus on growing their new location at the M2 development on 1st Avenue South. However, the brand-new Uproot Brewing will be taking over the space, Bham Now reported on August 17.
Earlier this year, Ghost Train Brewing Co. opened a second, larger location at M2 on 1st Avenue South. While Ghost Train grew their M2 space, the brewery converted their 3rd Avenue South location to experiment with microbreweries and other projects. Now, the brewery will be shifting all operations to M2.
2616 3rd Avenue South won’t stay empty for long. Uproot Brewing—a new brewpub and kitchen concept from Nate Darnell, head brewer at Ferus Artisan Ales—will be moving in to the location in early fall 2022.

USA, WA: Seattle’s Counterbalance Brewing Company is for sale
|
Counterbalance Brewing Company, owned and operated by Jeff Howell and Frank Lawrence, officially opened its taproom doors and launched wholesale distribution on February 4, 2015. On August 18, the brewery announced that it is for sale. Jeff and Frank made the difficult announcement on Facebook, the Washington Beer Blog reported.
“We’ve made the difficult decision to put our brewery up for sale and wind down business in the next couple months,” said the announcement. “We’ll be here for some time yet, but we wanted to make this announcement while we’ve still got some beers to share and time to thank those who have enjoyed it for the last 7+ years.”
The brewery and taproom is located in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood, near the intersection of Michigan Street and Fourth Avenue South. The beer-only tasting room is spacious and brightly lit by large, west-facing windows. Lots of bar seating, and a spattering of two- and four-top tables. Canada, ON: Decew Falls Brewing opens taproom and retail store in St Catharines
|
A brewery from four friends with “a passion for family, sports, & great craft beer” has announced the opening of its taproom and retail store in St. Catharines, the Canadian Beer News reported on August 16.
Decew Falls Brewing launched in 2017 with the release of Morningstar Cream Ale (5.4% abv), but has not had a space to welcome customers in person until now.
Brewmaster James Woodruff has a half-dozen beers currently available including Morningstar, 32K IPA (6.5% abv), Copper Beech Red Ale (4.7% abv), Merritt’s Wheat Ale (5.1% abv), North Street Lager (4.5% abv), and Sir Isaac’s Pale Ale (5.5% abv), all named after local historic people and places.
The taproom also offers a full food menu, and branded merchandise including shirts, hats, and glassware are available in the retail shop along with canned beer and growlers.
Decew Falls Brewing is located at 207 St. Paul St. W. in St. Catharines, and is open Wednesday and Thursday from 12:00 noon to 10:00 PM, Friday and Saturday from 12:00 noon to 11:00 PM, and and Sunday from 12:00 noon to 8:00 PM.

Japan: Asahi looking to raise prices in line with inflationary trends
|
Asahi Group Holdings Ltd. plans to maintain profitability for the next fiscal year as it looks to raise prices in line with inflationary trends while keeping a tight lid on costs, Chief Executive Officer Atsushi Katsuki was quoted as saying by Bloomberg on August 18.
“Given the foreseeable inflationary environment, we’ll cut costs and raise prices as conditions require,” Katsuki said in an interview. The Japanese brewer has already announced price increases for its Super Dry beer and other beverages for the first time in 14 years in October, when consumers will pay 6% to 10% more for beer, Yoichi whiskeys and other beverages. “By doing this, we are planning to post another increase in profits for the next fiscal year.”
Asahi, along with other Japanese retailers, is under pressure to raise prices for the first time in decades. A weaker yen is pushing up the costs of imported goods, while higher global prices for energy and raw materials is making it more expensive to produce and transport goods. Even so, shoppers in Japan have become accustomed to flat prices, while wage growth has remained relatively stagnant.

India: Carlsberg wins arbitration case filed by JV partner in India
|
Carlsberg said on August 17 it had won an arbitration case that was filed by its joint venture partner in India, following a row over the Danish brewer’s business practices in the country, Euronews reported.
The Copenhagen-based brewer has for years been locked in a commercial dispute with partner, Nepal-based Khetan Group, amid an internal probe into the brewer’s local practices that sparked a boardroom battle and concerns from its auditor.
Khetan Group, which owns 33.3% of shares in the holding company for Carlsberg’s businesses in India and Nepal, had referred disagreements over corporate governance standards to a Singapore arbitration tribunal.
In an award issued on May 4, Carlsberg said an arbitration panel had declined to grant its partner “the relief it had been seeking based on the various allegations relating to governance and breach of the Shareholder’s agreement.”
The arbitration order is not public.
“Carlsberg considers its position to be entirely vindicated by the liability award and is very satisfied with this outcome,” it said in its earnings statement on Wednesday.

Japan: Kirin focuses extra marketing efforts into non-alcoholic beer and whiskey Riku
|
Beverage giant Kirin has been focusing extra marketing efforts into its non-alcoholic beer option Kirin Green’s Free and its own-brand whiskey Riku in a new push to expand market share, the Food Navigator Asia reported on August 17.
Although Kirin is best-known for its beer products, traditional beer consumption has been seeing a continuous decline in Japan over the past two decades – so although the firm is actively working to revitalise the local beer sector via product innovation, it is also pouring a great deal of resources into growing its other businesses including that of non-alcoholic beer beverages and whiskeys.
Kirin Green’s Free is Kirin’s flagship non-alcoholic beer brand, and according to the firm this has been seeing increased growth in the past few months, which it has attributed to its revamping of the product both in terms of packaging and taste.
“After Kirin Green’s Free was revamped earlier this year, sales in April and May this year were 2.3 times higher than that of 2021, and in general we have seen the number of new converted consumers who had not drank non-alcoholic beers before who tried this increase by about five times compared to before the revamp,” Kirin Corporate Communications

Diageo India, the country’s leading beverage alcohol company, on August 16 announced an investment of ₹45 crore for its state-of-the-art Craft and Innovation Hub in Ponda, Goa. This is in line with the company’s strategy to accelerate transformational innovation and strengthen its craft and premium portfolio, the Business Line reported citing a statement from the company.
The Craft and Innovation Hub, spread across 4 acres, offers robust, end-to-end capabilities addressing various requirements, such as distillation capabilities for malt, gin and rum; maturation infrastructure and blending capability for spirits; an automated bottling and packaging line for craft spirits and a modern warehouse for incoming and finished products.
In addition, it will host a one-of-a-kind Consumer Experience Centre. When fully operational with a capacity of 20,000 cases a month, the Hub will employ 250 people locally.
Diageo India also announced the launch of an employability-linked skills training programme in association with the Skill Development Mission of Government of Goa. This programme will train 1,000 local youth over 3 years for employment/self-employment roles in the hospitality, tourism and allied industries.

The Netherlands: Brewers association comes out against soda tax on non-alcoholic beer
|
The Dutch brewers’ association has come out against a 3% tax on sugary beverages because it also applies to non-alcoholic beers, The Dutch News reported on August 19.
In an interview with NU.nl, former minister Fred Teeven, now the chair of trade organisation Vereniging Nederlandse Brouwers, complained that beer makers had been trying for years to produce low and no-alcohol beers to reduce alcohol consumption but were now being punished.
‘Initially, it was important that people drank less alcohol, now it’s sugar. It’s always something,’ Teeven said.
The government agreed as part of the coalition accord to increase the tax on sugared drinks, arguing the beverages are unhealthy.
The soft drinks tax, introduced in the Netherlands more than 50 years ago, is currently at around 3 cents per can and will go up to nearly 7 cents. It applies to sodas, but also fruit juice, lemonade and mineral water, even though water contains no sugar.
[The tax] ‘was not conceived with the health of citizens in mind, but to collect revenue for the treasury,’ Toon Zom, a former policy officer at the Ministry of Finance, told television programme Pointer earlier this year.

Spain: Mahou San Miguel to invest EUR7 mln in its Lleida brewery

The Mahou San Miguel brewing group increases its investments in Catalonia. The company has announced an investment of 7 million euros for its historic plant in Lleida, cradle of the San Miguel brand, during this year. The expense will be used mainly for energy efficiency and enhancing the sustainability of a center to which the company has already allocated 26.5 million euros over the last decade, Recuro.org reported on August 17.
The Lleida facility currently employs more than 160 people and is considered strategic within the map of plants that the conglomerate has in Spain. Hence, it allocates these 7 million euros in 2022, one million more than those spent last year.
During this financial year, Mahou San Miguel will allocate, for example, five million euros to eliminate plastic from packaging and replace it with cardboard boxes. Other infrastructure digitization and automation initiatives are also being prepared.
“We have reinforced our investment to have our facilities at a level of efficiency, quality and competitiveness that allows us to continue generating employment and wealth,” said Jordi Guixé, director of the factory.

Australia: Viterra’s 2022-23 planting survey highlights increase in Commodus and Maximus barley varieties

Viterra has released the results of its 2022-23 planting survey and subsequent segregation plan, as growers across South Australia and western Victoria prepare for the upcoming harvest season, the Grain Central reported on August 19.
The data collected in this year’s planting survey has highlighted an increase in Commodus and Maximus barley varieties, while planting of Spartacus and Compass has decreased across the board.
Viterra can also report a rise in genetically modified (GM) canola planting to 31 per cent this year of total canola area, up from 23pc in 2021-22.
Overall plantings of wheat and canola were slightly up, while barley and lentils were among the crops reported to be down.
Based on this data and individual grower consultations, Viterra has released its 2022-23 segregation plan to meet the needs of growers at its storage and handling sites.
One of the changes Viterra has flagged this season is potential segregations for Commodus at Port Pirie, Ardrossan, and Pinnaroo.
Confirmation of these segregations requires further consultation about the demand of the variety in malt markets which Viterra will conduct with domestic buyers and export customers as this variety is not yet malt accredited.
Meanwhile, segregations for Maximus will continue to be available at Port Pirie and Ardrossan.

South Korea: Unionized truckers occupy Hite Jinro’s headquarters over wage and other disputes

Unionized truck drivers working for Hite Jinro Co. occupied parts of the leading South Korean liquor company's headquarters in Seoul on August 16 after staging a prolonged walkout at three of the company's local plants over wage hikes and other disputes, the Yonhap News Agency reported.
About 70 truck drivers affiliated with the Cargo Truckers Solidarity began a sit-in inside the Hite Jinro headquarters building in southern Seoul around 7 a.m. and some 10 of them went up to the rooftop, according to union officials and police.
The truckers solidarity, affiliated with the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union under the militant labor umbrella group Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, is demanding that the company withdraw a damages suit and other legal actions against unionized truck drivers, rehire dismissed truckers and raise trucking rates to "realistic" levels.
"Members of the Cargo Truckers Solidarity entered the company headquarters building around 6:10 a.m. and their illegal occupation is still under way, disrupting the company's operations," said a company official.
The first-floor lobby was occupied by the unionized truckers, and some members on the rooftop are reportedly carrying flammable materials.
