USA, NC: UpCountry Brewing Company tapping into distilling
|
A WNC brewery is tapping into the spirited industry of distilling, the Associated Press reported on August 21.
In 2016, UpCountry Brewing Company opened in West Asheville, and a Brevard taproom opened two years later. This year, a collaboration motivated reintroduction as not only a craft brewery but as a craft distillery.
UpCountry Brewing Company has rolled out a line of agave spirit, gin, rum, vodka and whiskey, created by distiller Mark Harris.
What makes these spirits stand out is Harris’s careful selection of quality ingredients and technique that only permits the best parts of the fermented product that go into each batch.
“It’s the attention to detail that Mark puts into them,” John Cochran, owner of UpCountry, said.
Cochran is the co-founder and former co-owner of Terrapin Brewing Co., launched in Athens Georgia, where he worked with Harris.
In 2009, conversations about brewing and distilling inspired Harris to take his beermaking knowledge and apply it to making liquor.

USA, CO: Sanitas Brewing working on opening a second location in Englewood
|
Boulder's Sanitas Brewing is working on opening a second location, at 200 West Belleview Avenue in Englewood. Construction is underway, and the space could be open as soon as February 2023, the Denver Westword reported on August 19.
"We started planning location two in 2017," says co-founder and CEO Michael Memsic. "We got really close on a location in Denver, and I got cold feet right at the finish line during lease negotiations. We pulled back out of that project; it was too expensive and too competitive in that area. So we hit the brakes, went back to the books and said that coming out of 2019, that 2020 will be the year for location two." And while COVID derailed the 2020 plans, Memsic and his team restarted the hunt for location two in the fall of 2021.
The search landed in Englewood, where the brewery signed the lease for a 4,800-square-foot space in April; construction began in late July. One important feature for any potential taproom was that it had a substantial patio, says Memsic. The new location fulfills that requirement, with roughly 2,500 square feet of usable outdoor space. USA, OH: Fretboard Brewing signs lease for new location in Cincinnati

A Greater Cincinnati brewery plans to open its third location in a more than $100 million development, the Local12.com reported on August 20.
Fretboard Brewing has signed a lease to open a taproom in Factory 52, PLK Communities’ 20-acre redevelopment of the former U.S. Playing Card factory in Norwood. The Blue Ash-based brewery will open a 3,300-square-foot taproom with a large patio that brings its total space to about 6,000 square feet.
Fretboard is scheduled to open in Factory 52 in spring 2023.

USA, NC: Brunswick Beer and Cider to open in Leland on October 1
|
Lelanders have long-awaited their first brewery. In just over a month, locals can expect to sip on Leland-crafted brews for the first time, saving them a trip across the bridge, the Wilmington Biz reported on August 24.
Brunswick Beer and Cider aims to open on Oct. 1, according to owner Jud Watkins. The true opening date is flexible depending on how construction progresses, he said.
The sister brewery of Wrightsville Beach Brewery, Brunswick Beer and Cider will be similar, Watkins said, but will also feature unique drink and menu items.
The brewpub is currently under construction at The Villages at Brunswick Forest at 1313 S. Dickinson Drive, where Watkins said he sees regular visitors checking in for updates by bike weekly.
At about 13,000 square feet, the Brunswick brewery is roughly 25% larger than Wrightsville Beach Brewery, Watkins said. “We’re very excited. We’re ready to crank out some more beer,” he said Monday as he was installing piping in the new build. “We’re bursting at the seams at Wrightsville, which is a good problem to have, but still a problem.”

USA, CA: Danish brewer Mikkeller to close its only US brewing facility in San Diego
|
Copenhagen-based global beer company Mikkeller has announced it will close its only U.S. brewing facility in San Diego, citing “two years of COVID and the difficult current rising cost environment”, the Good Beer Hunting reported on August 22.
The closure does not include Mikkeller’s Little Italy taproom or its taproom in San Francisco. Mikkeller says it has 50 employees in the U.S., about half of whom will be laid off. Mikkeller San Diego has been open since 2016, and according to the Brewers Association (BA), produced 10,418 barrels of beer in 2021, down from a high of 11,750 in 2019.
Mikkeller has been candid about its recent business struggles. While announcing the departure of its CEO earlier this month, the company promised a reorientation away from expansion to focus on greater profitability for its 52 breweries and restaurants, located in 18 countries. In a statement posted on the company’s website, founder and creative director Mikkel Borg Bjergsø called this “a very challenging time for production companies — and especially in light of the current market situation — it is necessary for us to look at the whole business and ensure that it is sustainable.”

USA, FL: Moonrise Brewing Company announces immediate closure
|
Moonrise Brewing Company announced it would be closing immediately. Opening in 2017, owners Benjamin and Ashley Davenport offered a wealth of different ales with an ever-growing selection monthly, AskFlagler reported on August 23.
In a post on Facebook, the brewery announced:
“It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of Moonrise Brewing Company.
This decision was a very difficult one but unfortunately is unavoidable. This post-pandemic industry has been extremely difficult with many variables stacked against us and it’s just not possible to catch up.
“We feel honored to have served this community for the past 5 years and we will cherish every moment of it. We have made incredible friends, hosted countless community events and had great staff members over the years.
“We are beyond grateful for the memories and love from you all. Your support got us this far and we couldn’t thank you enough for it all.”
In a world of chain restaurants and blended bars —Moonrise offered a unique experience to Palm Coast and European Village.

USA, KY: Fusion Brewing pours out its last brew
|
A Lexington brewery opened by a former Eastern Kentucky University chemistry professor has poured out its last brew, the Lexington Herald Leader reported on August 19.
Fusion Brewing, which opened in 2019 in the Rickhouse on the Pepper Campus in the Distillery District off Manchester Road, closed as of Aug. 15. The business was one of the first to open in the building.
Owner Christian Paumi announced the news on social media, saying, “Hi all, it is with a weighted heart and sadness that I am announcing that @fusionbrewing will be closing it’s doors this week. It has been an amazing ride! I will indeed miss it. There are so many people I want to thank including everyone who believed in fusion from the start, my investors, my family, my awesome staff, my friends, Kentucky guild of brewers, and so many many more I’m sure I missed. As for me… stay tuned as who ever knows what the future holds! Thank you all again and cheers!”
Fans of the brewery expressed sadness online at the closing of the spot. Paumi declined to comment at the moment.

USA, VA: Richmond’s Canon & Draw Brewing Co. closes down for good
|
Richmond’s Canon & Draw Brewing Co. closed this month at 1527 W. Main St. after a four-year run, the Richmond Biz Sense reported on August 23.
Launched in 2018 as an offshoot of Chesterfield-based Steam Bell Beer Works, Canon & Draw struggled to return to its pre-pandemic levels, said owner Brad Cooper.
“Pre-COVID we’d have private parties for 200 people. After COVID we’d still have private parties, but it’d be like 20 people,” Cooper said. “We were never able to get back the people that we had before COVID.”
Canon & Draw occupied 5,000 square feet on the ground floor of The Eclipse, a mixed-use building owned by Blackwood Development.
Principal Nolen Blackwood said the brewery’s vacated space, which sits below 16 apartments, is available immediately for lease and could be subdivided into a pair of 3,500- and 1,500-square-foot suites. The Shopping Center Group has the listing.
Cooper said it was bittersweet to pull the plug on Cannon & Draw.

UK: Harvest 2022 continues at rapid pace and nearing completion
|
Harvest 2022 has continued at a rapid pace and is nearing completion, with 89% of the country's harvest now complete, AHDB analysis shows.
The five-year average for harvest progress by this point in the season is 52%, the levy organisation explained in its fourth harvest report.
The report is the latest update of the 2022-2023 season, and covers the beginning of harvest up to 16 August 2022.
Winter wheat GB harvest is estimated to be 92% complete, with the majority of crop left to be cut in the North East and Scotland.
Winter oilseed rape (WOSR) harvest is now complete, with the winter barley harvest finished in week ending 9 August (week 5).
Spring barley GB harvest is now 73% complete, and as at 16 August, it was estimated that 79% of the GB oat area had been harvested, AHDB says.
It comes as drought was declared in parts of Eastern and South England following weeks of hot and dry weather.
The UK average rainfall for the first week of August was only 7% of the long-term average, 1.0 mm compared to 13.4 mm.
The South East was the driest region (0.1 mm), whilst Scotland was the wettest (3.8 mm).

UK: Price of a pint of beer still used as a barometer for affordability

The price of a pint of beer was recently used as an analogy for explaining the rise in energy bills, showing how the British public still use beer as a measure for affordability, The Drinks Business reported on August 23.
Octopus Energy chief executive Greg Jackson told Radio 4’s Today programme: “I think the spate of failures within the 29 companies that went bust last year, that was driven by gas prices roughly doubling. They’re currently nine to 11 times higher than usual. Look, to put that in perspective, if this was beer, we’re talking about the wholesale price being £25 a pint.”
Speaking to the Drinks Business, food and drink author, broadcaster and ‘Beer Writer of the Year’ Pete Brown said: “Beer cuts across class and habit. Even people who don’t drink beer recognise it as an affordable everyday treat that’s open and accessible to everyone – or should be. Japan: Japan launches a drive to get young people to drink more alcohol
|
Japan has launched a drive to get young people to drink more alcohol, The Telegraph reported on August 18.
The move comes after many stopped drinking during the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to less revenue for the National Tax Agency.
Now, the agency has invited anyone aged 20 to 39 to submit ideas for strategies to increase alcohol consumption, including promoting drinking at home.
Entrants to the "Sake Viva!" contest have until Sept 9 to come up with ideas, with the winning plan being announced in November and adopted by the NTA.
Consumption of alcohol in Japan has fallen by 25 per cent in the last quarter-century, for reasons including an ageing population.
The trend was exacerbated by the pandemic as young people stopped going out to restaurants and socialising as much.
In 2020, taxes from alcohol sales saw their biggest fall in three decades. In that year consumption of beer, which was the worst affected drink, was down by over 20 per cent.
Earlier this month, an NTA official told the Japan Times that the move to working from home had also impacted drinking and taxes.

Jamaica: New 24 Karat beer quickly gaining market share
|
New entrant in the alcoholic beverage market, 24 Karat beer is moving to significantly increase its market share as it sets a precedent for growth in Jamaica over the next few years, the Jamaica Observer reported on August 24.
Manufacturer and entrepreneur Peter Bovell and his business partner Richard Lee are the co-founders and owners of the local start-up company, Two Jamaican Dem, which produces the beer.
Bovell said their aim is to penetrate the local market with an "all natural, no preservatives added, smooth-tasting beer" as the company positions itself to secure ground in a market controlled by big-name players Red Stripe, Heineken, and Guinness.
"If within the next two-three years we can carve out 10 per cent of the market, I think we would be doing very well. To get our products out there we are going to be engaging the wholesales and then restaurants, supermarkets, hotels, and other distributors. We have already started to work with a number of wholesales and the response so far has been satisfying," Bovell told the Jamaica Observer.

South Korea: Unionized truck drivers partially dismiss strike at Hite Jinro’s headquarters
|
Unionized truck drivers working for Hite Jinro Co. said on August 23 they will partially dismiss their sit-in strike at the headquarters of the country's leading brewer and distiller, the Yonhap News reported.
The unionists have been staging the walkout on the rooftop and lobby of the company's head office in Seoul for eight days over wage hikes and other disputes.
The strikers will end their occupation of the first-floor lobby in order to spur conversation between the labor and the management at 10 a.m. Wednesday, while keeping the protest on the rooftop as status-quo, the union said in an e-mail briefing.
The protesters work for Suyang Logistics Co., Hite Jinro's wholly-owned subsidiary.
"We have repeatedly made our point clear -- Once the management keeps their word about withdrawing the damages suit and rehiring the dismissed truckers, we are open for discussions about other agendas," it added.
The strikers requested the chief executive of Hite Jinro make direct representation of the management part of the negotiation, whereas Hite Jinro said the chief of Suyang Logistics will play such a role. Hite Jinro's logistics team head will audit the negotiation process as an observer, according to the firm.
