New Zealand, Australia, and USA: Craft beer production up 7.6% in April-June this year
|
Manufacturing performance software company, OFS, on August 25 announced findings from its quarterly Craft Brewers Benchmark Report, which provides insights into how data can be used to improve production efficiency in the craft brewing industry.
The report analysed the production of millions of litres of beer by primarily New Zealand, Australian and U.S. craft breweries between April and June this year to determine a view of ‘what good looks like’. It includes key performance benchmark data and explains why knowing overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) can make a significant impact on a brewer’s bottom line.
The data shows that while craft brewers increased production by 7.6 per cent compared with the previous three months, the industry average for actual production time while lines are available remains just 45 per cent.
“This is an industry that’s thriving while leaving so much potential on the table,” said OFS CEO James Magee “That luxury can’t last forever – we need a mindset shift in how the industry collects and leverages data to improve productivity.”

USA, PA: VK Brewing eyes fall 2022 opening in Exton
|
VK Brewing has purchased the Ship Inn, located at 693 East Lincoln Hwy in Exton, PA. Their ETA to open is Fall 2022, the Breweries in PA reported on August 25.
The veteran-owned brewery had originally planned to open at a location in Glen Mills, but that fell through. The team pivoted and purchased the Inn in Exton instead. We spoke with co-owner Jason Van Keuren to learn more about the building, and the space they plan to open very soon.
The Ship Inn was built in 1796 and was host to many famous people, including former presidents George Washington and Andrew Jackson, as well as former first lady Jackie Kennedy.
The building has been a restaurant for many of its years, and in July 2021 was featured on Chef Robert Irvine’s Food Network show “Restaurant: Impossible”. It was also featured on a show called “Ghost Detectives” back in 2015.
The Inn itself is about 14,000 sq/ft spanning three floors. The brewery and restaurant will utilize the first floor which is roughly 6,000 sq/ft. The first floor has seating for roughly 100 and an existing bar with about 16 seats and 10 beer taps.

USA, ID: Wheat, barley expectations tempered by quality concerns

Recent reports of low test weights and widespread sprout damage are tempering once lofty expectations for this season’s wheat and barley crops in southern and eastern Idaho, the Post Register reported on August 26.
Juliet Marshall, a University of Idaho plant pathologist and head of the Department of Plant Sciences, conducts wheat and barley variety trials in Kimberly, Rupert, Aberdeen, Soda Springs, Idaho Falls, Ririe and Tetonia. At each location, she’s confirmed crop quality problems associated with kernels accumulating starch amid excessive heat, compounded by untimely rains and hail late in the season.
Test weight measures the pounds of grain in a bushel. A test weight above 60 pounds is considered optimal. After recently finishing her fall grain harvest, Marshall reported the average test weight was low overall, and in hard white fall wheat varieties in her trials at Rupert was just 53 pounds. Some hard white test weights came in below 48 pounds – evidence that thunderstorms just before fall grain harvest contributed to sprouting, thereby depleting kernels of their starch.

USA, NY: Rising Storm Brewing Company acquires former Daisy Flour Mill in Rochester
|
The Daisy Flour Mill has new owners, according to the town of Penfield. The permit says that the building is now owned by Rising Storm Brewing Company, which is based in Avon. The building had been vacant since 2019, the RochesterFirst reported on August 25.
The new name of the business will be Rising Storm Brewing Company at the Mill. The town of Penfield says the brewery got a special permit that will allow for brewing on-site, as well as outdoor seating. The permit also says they will renovate the exterior.
A spokesperson with the town of Penfield said in March earlier this year, “the town board voted to on the approval of a special permit to allow the microbrewery with tap room and outdoor seating at this location.”
In 2021, Historic Daisy Flour Mill in Penfield is up for sale with a cool price tag of $625,000, which comes with some 14,000 square feet, nearly three acres of land, and all the included furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
It’s a National Register of Historic Places site, and has been a popular dining destination since its revitalization in the 1970s, said realtor Matthew Chatfield in 2021.

India: Diageo pauses whiskey sales in some states to push price hikes

One of Hina Nagarajan’s first moves at the helm of liquor giant Diageo Plc’s Indian arm is a standoff with government officials over price caps that have already cost the company almost $9 million in sales, and some say might backfire, Bloomberg reported on August 26.
United Spirits Ltd. has paused whiskey sales in a number of states yet to budge on price caps despite rising inflation. The move to stop sales rather than see margins continue to erode is a risky bet, analysts at Mumbai-based Dolat Capital wrote last month, that could complicate the firm’s pivot to premium products. It also means a mounting loss of revenue across its portfolio while costs rise at a double-digit pace.
“I didn’t realize how difficult it is,” 57-year-old Nagarajan said, referring to the maze of red tape that spans 36 states and union territories in a country where alcohol is still sometimes seen as forbidden.

South Africa: Distell reports 36.7% jump in annual profit

South African drinks maker Distell, waiting for regulatory approval for its sale to brewer Heineken, reported a 36.7% jump in annual profit as consumers bought more wine, ciders and spirits despite cost of living pressures, but said rising costs were weighing on margins, the European Supermarket Magazine reported on August 25.
Distell, set to be taken over by Dutch beverage company Heineken, was hit hard by prohibitions on the sale of alcohol in 2020 and 2021, when South Africa enforced lockdowns to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thanks to eased restrictions and strong demand, the maker of J.C. Le Roux sparkling wine, Savanna cider and Klipdrift brandy sold more alcohol than expected, as all three categories grew revenues by double digits.
The company said the sustained rise in global inflation, with resultant increases in input costs, supply chain disruptions, and glass and aluminium can shortages in its domestic market, all contributed to a 'minimal' decline in its gross profit margins.
To alleviate the pressure, the group has identified additional suppliers from various countries from which raw materials are sourced, it said, without naming them.

UK: Construction starts on Cabrach Distillery in Inverharroch, Moray
|
Malt whisky production is to resume in its "birthplace" - a rural part of north-east Scotland - for the first time in 170 years, BBC reported on August 25.
Construction has started on the Cabrach Distillery with a foundation stone at a site in Inverharroch, Moray.
A 19th Century farmhouse will house the distillery and future heritage centre after £3.5m was sourced for the project.
It will showcase the craft and alchemy of making Scotland's national drink.
The distillery will operate as a social enterprise, with future revenues supporting the Cabrach Trust's regeneration mission.
Barley will be sourced from adjacent fields which will maintain a commitment to sustainability.
It is hoped the project will be completed next year, which will mark 170 years since the last time whisky was legally produced in the area.
A significant change to legislation in 1823 meant three Cabrach families were compelled to establish legally-regulated distilleries on their farms.
The facilities flourished and real Cabrach whisky became highly regarded.
But various factors saw the distilleries close one by one, and the population of Cabrach declined to less than 100 people.
Grant Gordon, founder and chairman of the Cabrach Trust, hopes the new distillery will regenerate the area as a "thriving and sustainable community".

Jamaica: Red Stripe announces extension of its 'Full for Empties' policy to supermarkets, gas stations and hotels
|
Under pressure to increase the rate of return of returnable glass bottles (RGB), and in response to continuing supply chain disruptions, Red Stripe has announced the extension of its 'Full for Empties' (FFE) policy, the Jamaica Observer reported on August 25.
The policy requires customers to return an empty bottle to purchase a full bottle of Red Stripe products.
With the extension of the policy, previously exempt channels — namely supermarket chains, independent supermarkets, gas stations and convenience stores, and hotels — are now included in the FFE.
The extension of the policy came into effect on Monday, August 15.
In a letter to customers dated August 3, Red Stripe reiterated its continued commitment to maintaining a consistent and stable supply of products to the market.
Red Stripe's Head of Commercial Sean Wallace asserted that an important part of that commitment is the 'Red-Cycling' programme, which is the centrepiece of the company's sustainability efforts to protect the environment and ensure circularity in its operations.
The programme aims to increase the rate of return of bottles so they can be put back into the production cycle, and as such make them readily available to customers and consumers.
