Brewery news USA: January-July and July alone beer shipments reported to have decreased versus last year
The Beer Institute published an unofficial estimate of domestic tax paid shipments by beer brewers for July 2022.

The July 2022 estimate is 13,700,000 bbls, a decrease of 5.5 percent compared to July 2021 removals of 14,502,392 bbls.

Year-to-date estimate is 95.4 bln bbls, down 5.2% from January-July 2021.

The August 2022 domestic tax paid estimate is scheduled to be released on September 28, 2022.

Brewery news Canada: Beer sales down 7.3% compared to last year
Canadian brewers having a hard time staying afloat, CTV News Montreal reported on August 30.

When listening to reports about people going out and enjoying the weather, one can only assume that everything is back to normal.

Not quite, especially for the beer industry in Canada. In fact, total beer sales have actually dropped 7.3 per cent compared to last year, according to a report obtained by Beer Canada.

Total beer sales are up in Newfoundland and Labrador by a whopping 20.1 per cent. But in other provinces, beer sales for both retail and service have dropped significantly.

The largest drop so far this year has been in the province of Quebec. Beer sales have dropped 13.3 per cent compared to last year. In Saskatchewan, sales have dropped by 12.6 per cent and in Alberta, by 10.7 per cent. All areas are in the red, except for the Territories. In the beer business, a simple -1 per cent is massive, so the -3.3 per cent in Ontario is considered a disaster.

These drops are in addition to a disastrous 2021 when lockdowns were the norm to combat COVID. When things started to open up earlier this year, this is not the scenario the beer industry ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan & USA: Sapporo completes acquisition of Stone Brewing
Sapporo’s $165 million acquisition of Stone Brewing officially closed Wednesday, August 31, giving the Japanese beer maker one of the top 10 craft breweries by volume in the U.S. in 2021 and the 18th largest brewing operation overall, Brewbound reported.

Sapporo, Japan’s oldest beer brand having been founded in 1876, will now begin integrating operations with the San Diego craft brewery and transferring production of Sapporo’s beers for the U.S. market to facilities in Escondido, California, and Richmond, Virginia.

In announcing the close of the transaction, first announced on June 24, Sapporo noted that Stone’s existing “operations and growth projections” would be preserved, “with no planned changes to Stone jobs.”

Sapporo U.S.A. chairman Kenny Sadai and CEO Maria Stipp will lead the combined organization. Members of Stone’s executive leadership team will remain in their roles and will be joined by Sapporo U.S.A.’s VP of corporate business. They will manage all U.S. and export business for Sapporo, Stone, Anchor Brewing (acquired in 2017) and Unibroue.

“Stone meets all the requirements we were looking for in a partner for growth,” Sadai said in the release. “It has the bi-coastal breweries, best-in-class team and a commitment to quality just like ours. With our complementary strengths, we are ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Good Brewing Company opens new location in Bothell
Good Brewing Company just opened another location. For those keeping score, that makes five: a brewpub in Woodinville, a taproom in Woodinville, a restaurant in Monroe, another restaurant in Sultan, and now a brewery with taproom in Bothell, the Washington Beer Blog reported on September 1.

The former home of Decibel Brewing is now Good Brewing’s Bothell Barrel House. Back in April, on social media, Decibel Brewing announced its closing with the simple statement, “When the music’s over, turn out the lights.” Not long thereafter, Good Brewing announced its intentions.

“We are excited to announce that Good Brewing Co. is joining the Bothell community!” said a post on Instagram back in June. “Kevin has been working hard getting our new 10-barrel brewing system into place, so we can provide more quality craft beer to the region. Stay tuned this week for more updates, including upcoming opening dates. Bothell are you ready??”

And then last weekend, “Good Brewing Bothell is now open! We are excited to be joining the Bothell community we can’t wait to see you all! …Come by for great beer, great people, future live music, and food trucks!”

Kids and dogs are welcome at Good Brewing’s Bothell Barrel House. The location is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Iron Hops Brewing Co. coming to north St. Louis soon
Beer lovers should keep an eye out for Iron Hops Brewing Co., a soon-to-open brewery at 29 Produce Row in north St. Louis, as reported by St. Louis Business Journal.

Owner and head brewer Chad Thompson said his line of beers should become available in the fall pending some licensing that still needs to be finalized. At that time, there will be an interactive map added to the website for customers to see where Iron Hops is available. The beers should launch in restaurants and bars first, with retail availability soon to follow. The brewery will not have its own taproom, though Thompson said he could have guests on site by appointment, such as for a group tasting event. He is hoping to open a taproom at a separate location in 12 to 18 months.

Although complications due to the pandemic threw a wrench in Thompson’s original plans to open with a taproom, it also came as a blessing in disguise, allowing Iron Hops to “focus on the wholesale and packaged liquor side of things,” Thompson said. He said this helped keep overhead low at a time when brick-and-mortar establishments were particularly struggling.

To start, Iron Hops will produce six signature ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Grandville’s Osgood Brewing to serve up its last beer
Nine years after opening its doors, Grandville’s Osgood Brewing is getting ready to serve up its last beer, WOODTV.com reported on September 1.

While the brewery’s bar and beverage sales will carry on until inventory runs out, the restaurant will be permanently closed starting September 2.

“We would’ve loved to have a ‘last day’ event, or tell everyone ahead of time so we could fill the place, but we lack the staff to provide reasonable service. We have seen that scenario play out very poorly at other businesses. It would be unkind to our staff and our guests to attempt it. We realize this may disappoint some of you, and we are sorry we could not have a proper goodbye,” stated in a post on the Osgood Brewing Facebook page.

“Ultimately staffing proved to be too difficult,” co-owner Ronald Denning told News 8 in a message on September 1.

He said staffing the brewery has been a struggle for the last couple years, “but this year has easily been the most difficult.”

He said on Friday and Saturday nights when they normally would have six servers working, they’ve operated with just one server. Ronald Denning said the low staffing challenges also extended to Osgood Brewing’s ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: ABARES expected to lift estimates for Australia’s crop
Mostly favourable seasonal conditions across the Australian grainbelt point to a lift in ABARES’ estimates for the nation’s wheat, barley and canola crops in its next quarterly Australian Crop Report due for release next Tuesday, September 6, the Grain Central reported on August 31.

The impact of prolonged waterlogging on some parts of New South Wales and southern Queensland appears to be the big wildcard.

Following successive rain events throughout August, disease pressure being seen in every state could also impact yield in some areas.

However, diligent spraying of fungicide to counter rust in cereals and blackleg and sclerotinia in canola appears to have most crops in good stead ahead of spring, which arrives tomorrow.

Sources report aerial contractors have been in demand to spread urea where ground access has been impossible because of boggy conditions, and are now being called upon to spray fungicide.

In Western Australia, planes are also being deployed to drop mouse bait as rodent numbers pick up in some districts.

While some crops in NSW and southern Queensland are underfertilised because growers have not been able to get sufficient urea on by ground or air, crops are generally well fed.

Based on estimates from other forecasters issued since ABARES released its previous ...More info on site

Barley news UK: England’s spring barley area down 13% this year
The wheat area in England for this year's harvest rose 0.8% from 2021 to 1.67 million hectares, Britain's farm ministry said on August 31, issuing the results of its June survey.

The ministry noted that the wheat harvest in England was one of the earliest on record and was 92% complete, as of Aug. 16.

"Wheat yields vary between good and average due to dry conditions," the ministry said, adding the first production estimate would be published in October.

Rapeseed plantings in England were estimated by the ministry to have risen by 20% to 322,786 hectares although they remain far below a peak of 712,671 set in 2012.

The ministry said rapeseed yields varied between regions with poor establishment, water stress and pest and disease infestation impacting the crop.

The spring barley area in England fell 13% to 410,000 hectares while winter barley plantings rose 7.7% to 372,000 hectares.

Brewery news India: AB InBev expands Hoegaarden beer range
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the company behind beers such as Budweiser, Corona Extra and Seven Rivers, is launching variants of its Belgian wheat beer brand Hoegaarden in India. The variants, the company said, will target both beer and white spirits drinkers in the country and is expected to fetch 15% incremental volume for its Hoegaarden franchise in India, the Mint reported on September 2.

Capitalising on the growing consumer trend for flavours and styles in the wheat beer category, AB InBev is launching two variants - Rosée and Nectarine (raspberry and peach flavours respectively). To begin with, these will be available in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, and Thane.

Ab InBev plans to launch them in markets like Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh in the coming days, said the company’s vice president, marketing & new business development, Vineet Sharma.

The company had begun local manufacturing of the Hoegaarden range in 2020, said Sharma, adding that its sales volume have surpassed 2021 numbers. He said one of the biggest barriers to entry in the beer trade in India is the taste and with the latest launch, they may be able to attract more women consumers and overall white spirit consumers.

“Indian consumers have become very experimentative and they have tried ...More info on site

Brewery news Malawi: Castel Malawi announces price hikes
Castel Malawi has raised prices of beers, spirits and alcomix, saying the devaluation of the Kwacha and scarcity of forex has led to a high cost of production, the Malawi 24 reported on August 31.

In a letter to partners, Castel’s Head of Sales Nelson Zoto Banda has announced the increase in prices which are effective as from 1st September, 2022.

“The company is strained by the high cost of production, distribution, utilities, and importation of the essential ingredients due to the forex scarcity before and after the devaluation of the Malawi Kwacha which has brought about a total increase of 27% on the operating costs,” says Banda in the letter dated 30th August 2022.

A price list attached to the letter indicates that Carlsberg Green and Carlsberg Special (330ML) are at K900 per bottle from K700 while Castel Beer, Kuche Kuche and Doppel Munich are at K700 each from K600.

Both Malawi Gin and Malawi Vodka are at K7000 per 750ML bottle while Premier Brandy is at K10,000 per 750ML bottle.

Castel Malawi also raised the prices of its drinks in May this year due to an increase in production and distribution costs following increase in prices of fuel, utilities as well ...More info on site
