Brewery news USA, OH: New Berlin Brewing Co. getting ready for launch in North Canton
An empty electrical box hangs on the wall in a closet at the back of New Berlin Brewing Co. at 1664 N. Main St. in the Marc’s plaza in North Canton. Owner Mike Leckie-Ewing said the electrical panel, which he has been waiting on for more than six weeks, is the final piece the brewery needs to open, The Repository reported on September 6.

Siemens, the company delivering the electrical panel, has given Leckie-Ewing multiple ship dates for the panel, delaying it each time. It has been a headache for 53-year-old Leckie-Ewing and has pushed the brewery opening back to mid-to-late September, if he’s lucky.

“So hopefully, (we can open) within a week of when we get the part (which is now expected Sept. 13),” Leckie-Ewing said.

He hopes to open the doors as soon as he can and “might have a grand opening down the road from there,” he said, noting that his intent is to be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. five to six days a week, making sure his staff is happy with the hours and will have the time off they need.

As for when the brewery does open, Leckie-Ewing plans to have 12 beers on tap, and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Pittsburgh Brewing Co. back to brewing independently in-house
After 12 years of contract brewing in Latrobe, Pittsburgh Brewing Co. is back to brewing its popular beers (such as Iron City, IC Light and IC Mango) independently in-house at the historic Pittsburgh Plate and Glass (PPG) Plant located in Allegheny County’s Creighton, Pa., the Craft Brewing Business reported on September 6.

The facility will produce 150,000 barrels per year immediately and ultimately be capable of producing 750,000 barrels per year.

From brewhouse to cold area and bottling, the company went with GEA design and technology. Installation began in August 2021 and was completed one year later.

“Doing all the brewing ourselves from now on is a big step. The learning curve is huge,” says Todd Zwicker, President of Pittsburgh Brewing. “We relied on GEA, and today we are proud of our iconic brewery – a project that we managed to complete on time thanks to GEA, despite the pandemic and supply chain situation. We want to be a beacon project for our region with the participation of the local community.”

Pittsburgh Brewing’s new brewery is housed in an old glass factory. The 42-acre property provides enough space for the brewhouse, the huge tank farm with 100 BBL brewing tanks and 500 BBL fermentation ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: More Brewing Company to invest $6 mln in a new brewery in Fort Wayne
The City of Fort Wayne Administration and Community Development Division announced a major private investment is planned for the North River site, the Building Indiana reported on September 4.

More Brewing Company, which has three locations in the Chicago area, is planning to invest approximately $6 million to build a two-story, 16,000 square foot restaurant and brewery, located just north of the riverfront public space and near the intersection of Fourth and Calhoun streets. This would be the first project to be constructed at North River.

Later, the Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission will be asked to approve an economic development agreement as the first step in the process for the proposal to move forward. The approval of this agreement highlights the plans for continued development and investment along the riverfront.

“Being able to advance a significant development at the North River site is a tremendous win for our community,” said Deputy Mayor Karl Bandemer. “Successful public-private partnerships have positioned Fort Wayne as a leader in bringing new and unique amenities for residents, visitors, and businesses to enjoy.”

The North River property is comprised of 29 acres generally bounded by Clinton, Fourth and Harrison streets and serves as an important gateway into downtown. The site ...More info on site

The City of Greenville announced that a new brewery is coming to the Old Cigar Warehouse on South Main Street, the Fox Carolina reported on September 3.

Brewery news USA, VA: Legend Brewing Company pours its last pint at its Olde Towne Portsmouth location
A Richmond-based brewing company poured its last pint at its Olde Towne Portsmouth location on Sunday, September 11, the Yahoo News reported.

Legend Brewing Company decided to close its Portsmouth restaurant and brewery this past weekend after opening five years ago. The 4,300-square-foot satellite location, called Legend Brewing Depot, has operated in the Seaboard Building in Olde Towne since leasing the space in late 2016.

In a Wednesday, August 31 Facebook post, Legend thanked Portsmouth customers for years of patronage and letting the brewery be a part of the community. In the comments, customers shared photos and videos of their favorite memories, like drag bingo night and the Glencoe Ghost Scotch Ale.

“It breaks our hearts to let you know we have made the very difficult decision to not renew our lease in the Seaboard Building,” Legend said in the post. “We are focusing on the future of the Legend legacy as we continue to bring you fresh, delicious, craft beer.”

Legend leased the space in late 2016 as the Monument Cos. was redeveloping the property into luxury apartments, according to previous Virginian-Pilot reporting. The city of Portsmouth, hungry to land a craft brewery, spent between $10,000 and $15,000 on advertising to recruit ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company to close its Jennings brewery in Cockermouth
Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) – the joint venture between Carlsberg UK and Marston’s Brewery – is to close its Jennings Brewery in Cockermouth, Lancs Live reported on September 6.

CMBC said the brewery, located in the Lake District in north-west England, had been operating at below capacity, seeing a “significant decline in volumes” in recent years. The brewer added it would now explore options for the site, including a sale. The logistics arm of the factory will continue to operate whilst the process takes place.

Production of beers including Jennings Cumberland Cask will move to CMBC’s Marston’s Brewery in Burton.

CMBC chief executive Paul Davies said the company was exploring opportunities for redeployment for staff employed at the facility. Five jobs are expected to be lost following the closure.

“We understand the great affection the local community has for the brewery, and its place as part of the UK’s brewing heritage,” he said. “We are pleased to continue brewing Cumberland Cask by moving production to the historic Marston’s Brewery in Burton, which has a fantastic track record producing traditional cask beers.

Brewery news Thailand: Thailand to increase alcohol taxes, apply alcohol rates to non-alcoholic beers
Not only is Thailand planning on increasing existing tax on all types of alcohol, but it also plans on applying alcohol tax to non-alcoholic beer, according to Director-General of the Revenue Department Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Thaiger reported on September 7.

Ekniti said that the department will increase tax on all types of alcohol, in the fiscal year 2023, to help combat alcoholism among Thailand’s youth. More and more young Thais are drinking heavily, so the price hike aims to reduce alcohol consumption and improve the overall health of the public, he said.

The sincerity of Ekniti’s concern for the public’s health is questionable at best because he also said that the department will start taxing beer containing 0% alcohol. He said that the younger generation is showing more interest in non-alcoholic beer, so it should be taxed.

Surely, non-alcoholic beer should remain tax-free if the goal is to reduce alcohol consumption among young Thais?

Ekniti also said tax on e-cigarettes would be increased, according to KhaoSod. Seeing as E-cigarettes are illegal in Thailand, it is unclear how the tax will be applied, or is already being applied to ‘vapes.’ Unless Thailand is planning to legalise vaping anytime soon.

Just last week, the government reconfirmed their firm ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: North London brewer Beavertown sells its final stake to Heineken
North London brewer Beavertown has sold its final 51% stake of its business to Heineken for an undisclosed sum, The Drinks Business reported on September 7.

The move follows the maker of Gamma Ray and Neck Oil having already sold a 49% stake of its business to Heineken back in June 2018 for £40 million after months of speculation from the beer world.

Following the 2018 deal with Heineken, Beavertown put funds towards building a new brewing facility in Tottenham Hale called Beaverworld with 10 times the brewing capacity of its former site.

Historically, Beavertown has developed a cult following specific to its craft brewery image and its founder Logan Plant had previously been very vocal on the importance of craft breweries being distinct from corporate macro beer companies.

Last summer, Beavertown Brewery announced plans for the launch of its first ever pub, Corner Pin, situated in the heart of the brewery’s hometown in Tottenham, north London.

The brewer, which has always had a very loyal following in north London, had also formerly struck a deal with Tottenham Hotspur to open a microbrewery and taproom at the stadium, which both parties claimed was a “premier League first.”

Sources reveal that the sale of the final stake ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Kenya Revenue Authority moves to court accusing Keroche Breweries of failing to honour tax payments
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has moved to court accusing Keroche Breweries of failing to honour tax payment agreements which accompanied the reopening of the brewer in July, The Star reported on September 1.

According to the taxman, after the reopening of Keroche breweries on July 29, the brewer declined to make good the payments as directed by the Court.

KRA says Keroche was to pay Sh8million on Aug 6, Sh8million on Aug 30 and current taxes worth Sh14.2million which to date they have not complied with.

“Keroche Breweries Limited has been adamant in disregarding the court order of July 14 2022 notwithstanding that the order was issued in the presence of the counsel of Keroche Breweries Limited, the same was not and has not been complied with to date,” KRA’s application to the court read.

The taxman decried that despite issuing letters demanding for the payment of the taxes from Keroche on July 21, August 3, August 15, and August 24, the brewer has failed to comply with the order and pay any taxes as ordered or when they fall due.

“Keroche Breweries Limited has now proceeded to decline to comply with their obligations under a tax law and due dates to accounting for ...More info on site

Brewery news Qatar: Qatar to allow beer sales at World Cup games 3 hours before kick-off
Qatar will permit ticketed fans to buy alcoholic beer at World Cup soccer matches starting three hours before kickoff and for one hour after the final whistle, but not during the match, The Cyprus Mail reported on September 3 citing a source with knowledge of plans for the tournament.

Budweiser, a major World Cup sponsor with exclusive rights to sell beer at the tournament, will serve beer within the ticketed perimeter surrounding each stadium, but not in the stadium stands or concourse, the source said.

This year’s World Cup is the first to be held in a Muslim country with strict controls on alcohol, presenting unique challenges for organisers of an event sponsored by a major beer brand and often associated with beer-drinking fans.

“Beer will be available when gates open, which is three hours before kick off. Whoever wants to have a beer will be able to. And then when they leave the stadium as well for one hour after the final whistle,” the source said.

Additionally, Budweiser will be permitted to serve beer in part of the main FIFA fan zone in central Doha from 6:30pm to 1:00am every day of the 29-day tournament, which kicks off on Nov. 20, the source ...More info on site
