Denmark: Carlsberg converts Danish brewery to oil from gas
|
Carlsberg A/S has converted the brewery supplying beverages to its homeland of Denmark to run on oil instead of gas to avoid having to shut it down amid Europe’s escalating energy crisis, Bloomberg reported on September 29.
The beermaker is also working on similar measures for its other European facilities so that they, from Nov. 1, “will be ready to switch to oil if needed,” Tanja Frederiksen, a spokeswoman for the Copenhagen-based company, said in an emailed reply to questions.
Danish authorities have this year included Carlsberg on a list of about 50 large gas users that won’t be protected in case the country needs to reduce gas consumption. While the Nordic country is in a better energy-supply situation than most European peers thanks to local biogas supplies, authorities aren’t ruling out power or gas outages this winter.
The Fredericia brewery in western Denmark produces almost all of the Carlsberg beer sold in the country, where the company has a 63% market share. Carlsberg didn’t disclose how much gas the facility normally uses nor how much oil it consumes with the new set-up.

Japan: Consumers squirrel away beer ahead of impending price hikes

Beer sales typically decrease after the long, hot summer has ended, but they are continuing to rise in September as impending price hikes have consumers bucking that trend as they squirrel away their favorite brews, The Japan News reported on September 28.
The prices of many foods and drinks are set to increase on Oct. 1, and the upcoming price hikes have many people stockpiling beer as suds have a long shelf life.
Supermarkets and discount stores are enticing customers by means such as setting up special sales corners for those wanting to stock up on beer before it gets more expensive.
Mega Don Quijote Fukaebashi-ten, a discount store in Higashinari Ward, Osaka, opened a section exclusively for beer and beer-like beverages near the cash registers on the first floor in early September.
The discount store encourages customers to buy more beer products by displaying posters with the message “Shipping prices [of beer] will rise in October” and a graphic showing the price hike ranges of each beer maker.
Store officials said many customers are buying three to five cases of beer, each of which contains 24 cans.

USA, VA: AB InBev announces $20 mln investment in its Williamsburg Brewery
|
Anheuser-Busch announced a $20 million investment at its Williamsburg Brewery Thursday, Sept. 29, the Wydaily reported.
The company’s investment into the facility, which is nearing its 50th anniversary on Oct. 1, is part of the brewer’s 2021 announcement to “invest $1 billion over two years in the company’s facilities to accelerate the nation’s recovery and drive economic prosperity in the communities where it operates.”
The investment is part of a larger company-wide initiative that spans 26 states. The $20 million investment into the Williamsburg facility includes expanding the facility’s brewing capabilities, enhancing brewery process technologies, and facility renovations.
“Our planned $1 billion investment is about supporting our local communities by creating and sustaining jobs as our nation continues to navigate the economic recovery,” CEO of Anheuser-Busch Brend Whitworth stated in the announcement. “We’re proud to be celebrating five decades of brewing history in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and our Williamsburg Brewery plays an important role in producing high-quality products for our consumers to enjoy for years to come.”
The company said it has created over 30 new jobs year-to-date in James City County.

India: Heineken’s United Breweries launches Heineken Silver in Inda
|
United Breweries Ltd., part of the Amsterdam-based Heineken Group, on September 29 announced the launch of Heineken Silver, expanding its presence in the premium beer category in India, the Mint reported.
The launch will drive and accelerate the growth of the premium beer category in India, said a top executive at the company.
In India, the beer is available in both on- and off-trade retail channels in Bengaluru. Heineken Silver’s 330-ml pint is priced at ₹120, the 500-ml can at ₹160 and the 650-ml bottle at ₹200 across off-trade retail outlets in Bengaluru. Silver will also be launched in other markets in the next few months.
In 2021, Heineken N.V. obtained a controlling stake in United Breweries in India following the acquisition of additional ordinary shares in the homegrown brewer taking its shareholding in UBL from 46.5% to 61.5%. While UBL’s Kingfisher continues to be the largest beer brand in the country, the Heineken brand has three variants in India including the original, Heineken 0.0 and the Silver. The company also sells the Amstel brew in India.

Canada: Feed barley market remains strong
|
The feed barley market remains strong despite the influx of freshly harvested supplies, with little competition from other feed sources, the CountryGuide reported on September 29.
“The markets have been coming up steadily, with what feels like no harvest pressure,” said Suzanne Leclerc, owner of Market Master Ltd. in Edmonton.
“People were hoping the market would get lower and didn’t purchase, because they were hoping to see more harvest pressure,” said Leclerc.
However, that didn’t happen “and they caught themselves where they were short and needed to pay up to get (supplies).”
The weaker Canadian dollar and strength in Chicago corn futures mean that corn imports from the U.S. are no longer a cheap option, she added. A good-quality Canadian wheat crop has also cut into feed wheat supplies.
The lack of cheaper feed alternatives should leave little reason for barley prices to go lower, according to Leclerc, especially with the grain harvest nearing completion across Western Canada.
However, continued issues with the availability of trucking were something to watch.
Leclerc noted that while prices may be rising in the key feeding area of Lethbridge, the trucking rates are also going up. She recommended that anyone who needs to move grain should book their transportation in advance,

UK: Scotch Whisky Association taking cautious approach to weak pound
|
This week's dramatic fall in the value of the pound might seem to be a boon for Scotland's exporters, so why are many firms reacting cautiously to the news?
Leonard Russell describes the record low hit by the pound against the dollar on September 26 as "disturbing", the BBC reported on September 28.
He ought to be delighted at sterling's relative weakness against the dollar and the euro because his company, Broxburn-based Ian Macleod Distillers, exports spirits such as Glengoyne, Tamdhu and Edinburgh Gin around the world.
But his response is rather muted.
"Obviously the weak pound will be good for exports and, as somebody in the whisky and gin market, that is welcome," he says.
"The low value of the pound is going to help exports and will help us absorb some of the very large cost-inflationary pressures we are about to suffer from, particularly energy."
But Mr Russell says his company will have to put its prices up to cover increased costs.
"We are paying people more because of inflation, so our labour costs are going up and our energy costs are going up," he explains.
"Malted barley is made by germinating barley, so there's quite a large energy input into the cost of our barley,
